Windows Security Warning Dialogs
Jul 7, 2009
This is a problem on a Windows Server, but this sort of thing is more of a general Windows problem.... so, onwards...One of our servers recently died and required restoring from backup, which went almost perfectly. The sole exception is that the server is now using Webdings/Wingdings for IE download dialogs and Windows security warning dialogs. And I have not the slightest idea why it's doing this. I've hit the search engines and help sites and haven't found anything, and the WindowsFonts folder is perfectly intact as far as I can tell.

Every time I want to open a .url file using the customized Links menu on the deskbar (channel bar), I get a dialog box with a security warning message "Do you want to open this file?" How do I disable this security warning dialog box from popping up? I am confident my Avast! virus definitions will detect and intercept any virus or spyware attached to any url before the file is opened, so I really don't need this feature, it is annoying.

When my PC was delivered, and evaluation copy of McAfee Command Centre was pre installed. As I prefer to use my own antivrus product as well as Windows own firewall, I uninstalled McAfee. Although it didn't fully install, I removed the files left behind with the removal tool provided by McAfee. I installed my own antivirus product, aVast, and activated Windows firewall. If I look in Security Centre, the is a conflict warning saying that I have two firewalls activated. For some reason, McAfee is still shown as being present as both a firewall and antivirus protection. I don't know how this can be because McAfee is no longer on my computer. Furthermore I cannot find any way to remove the reference to McAfee.

I get this annoying warning when I open and .exe file. The warning gives me the option to deselect the 'always ask when opeing this file', but it reappears the next time I open the file and the warning is reselected even though I already deselected it. The warning has a help link on the bottom ' how can I decide what software to run' and all the help links talk about is downloading which has nothing to do with this warning dialog box. How do I get rid of this annoying security warning on this file. If I go to properties for the file, there is an unblock option which I select and apply, but it too reappears the next time I open the file properties.

I am experiencing is related to the lack of a security certificate for an email server from which I am receiving mail with Windows Live Mail. I want to know if there is a way I can suppress the warning message I receive from Windows Live Mail every time I start the application, or I can otherwise tell the program that this is a trusted server even though there is no certificate. Since I can simply dismiss the warning each time and receive mail I am looking for an automated way, short of requiring this server to install a certificate, to indicate to Windows Live Mail that this is a trusted server.

This has just come in, and was captured by my phishing filter. I have since deleted it as I suspect its authenticity; If it is legit, then the sender is doing the very action that Users are being firmly and constantly warned against.

In the last few days, when I have clicked on certain links, a Window opens headed "File Download Security Warning". It says underneath: "Do you want to save this file or find a program online to open it?" The name of the file is stated, and is said to be of the type "Unknown Filetype".
Below that there are buttons offering "Find", "Save" and not surprisingly "Cancel". If you click on "Find" a Window opens headed "Windows File Association" This says the file is "MIME Type: Application/x-gzip-compressed." None of this is normal, so I used System Restore to go back three days. This seems to have cured most of the errant links, but not all. The problem remains. When you click on a link, you should go to that link, right?

FYI The latest Windows Updates include Security Update KB941644 which is rated as Important; is in fact Critical. Windows Update provides only summary information and links; the reference security "Vulnerabilities in Windows TCP/IP Could Allow Remote Code Execution (941644)" clearly says this update is in fact a Critical update for Vista (and only Important or Moderate for other OS's). If anyone knows how to notify Microsoft of such errors directly please could they do so and/or let me know for future reference?

The quality assurance section at Redmond must be out to lunch permanently. IE 8 update makes IE show your IE explorer history and .wmv videos no longer automatically runs in media player. These are just a few quirks. Vista is the worst operating system since Windows ME. I use Vista Ultimate in one machine and it locks me out of many directories when using explorer.

I've had a problem for a while now. Every time I open Windows Mail up, or the news groups, I get a message saying Windows mail isn't my default mail program, and asks if I want it to be. I click yes every time, but I will still get this message when I open Windows Mail again the next day. Everything's works OK after I click this message. No other errors or anything.

Recently some of the File Save dialogs are coming up maximized. IE7 and Visual Studio 8 are affected mostly. In one case, I accidently hit the little "Maximize" button instead "Dismiss". There is no corresponding "Normal" button in the maximized dialog. How do I get these dialogs back to normal?

My computer is running the concistency check. It's at stage 3 and when it's almost complete it's starts to "replace invalid security Id with default security id for file ******" it's been doing this for a while now and I was wondering what I can do to speed it up. It's currently at 170000, and if I try to restart the computer the login screen will not load if I skip the disk check.

Seen lots on this - have tried to follow advice and even uninstalled McAfee and recreated mail account from scratch on Windows Mail - still no luck - still get the windows security prompt. Cannot download or send any emails. V. frustrating - especially when going through the risk of unistalling protection (which came pre-installed).
Is there a published document from Microsoft on this problem? Some definitive, clear, step-by-step advice for those who simply want to transfer from XP to Vista wihtout these unexpected, business damaging issues.

On starting up my Dell notebook today I got an alert from Windows Security Center that there were multiple issues with my computers security. When I opened the Security Center Alert it was indicating that my firewall was off and also that it could not detect any anti-virus software on the computer. The computer came with McAfee Security Center and when I open that it indicates that I'm totally protected. It of course has a firewall and anti-virus, etc.

Windows Security Alerts tells me that "AVG anti virus free reports that it is turned off." Whereas AVG reports "All security features are working correctly and are up to date" although I have inward and outward email checking turned off. Have found and downloaded a fix "reset_access_avg8_en.exe" from the AVG website but the notification icon persists.

However, now when I try and send emails a different message comes up which is: Please verify that both username and password are correct for your mail server. So I put in the details, but it does not go anywhere, just keeps popping up with this message again. All I can think of is that I have forgotton which username and password are associated with this - how do I go about finding this out, or changing this?
