Aug 27, 2009Is Windows Defender an anti-virus program? If so, should I turn it off as Norton Security suite recommends? If I turn it off, how do I manage my start-up programs?

View 2 RepliesWhat is Windows Defender and is it needed? I have Vista (no SP1) and I also have Norton Internet Security installed.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI got Vista 32 bit installed on my laptop. I work from Internet And need a good firewall and security suite which can protect my computer from trojen and malewars and hackers. Currently i am using kaspersky as my internet security and in past i have used Norton Security suite, In Both I have noticed getting too much of hacking attempts 3/hr.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have vista 64 bit home premium. I have disabled UAC because I find it to be highly annoying. Another thing I find highly annoying is; no matter how much I try to stop it; vista always seems to think I am a moron and sets EVERY SINGLE ONE OF MY FILES to read only. Now I heard if you disable security center/windows defender you can un-readonly everything. I tried that; didnt work; yes I reset to make it active. Then I reactivated them; still didnt work. I tried a document on how to manually turn off Read Only; but even then it didnt work. Once; I dont know how; I managed to turn it off; but every single time that I installed something new it went to read only. It is REALLY annoying; and I swear this is pissing me off something chronic. I cant be a heavy computer user when I cant even do basic system operations since vista seems to think I am a straight jacket. Belive me though; if I dont find a way to turn it off; this computer will be dead and I will be in a striahgt jacket. I want either a way to EFFING TURN THIS OFF. or a patch offical or unoffical I DONT CARE I just want this read only stuff OFF. Now if you think I am overacting. It is hard to live with winamp constantly not showing your last playlist; or opera showing pages you had open when I first transfered the config files across. Trying to change settings on open source programs that refuse to change thanks to this ahem of a system that I cant disactivate. When I do; it turns itself BACK ON .

I recently upgraded to latest level of Nortin Internet Security 2008 (when they prompted me to!), and since then I cannot receive email via Windows Mail from my Yahoo account. See error message above. Just spoke to Symantec who claim that NIS 2008 is fully compatible with Windows Mail. I'm not convinced as the problem only started with their upgrade, and all was working perfectly before.
I just updated Norton 2007 and installed Norton 2008, now Security Center notifies me that I don't have anti-virus protection, but norton appears to be operating correctly?

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy NIS 2010 runs out in 15 days, and instead of paying them $60 for another year I'm wondering if it's safe enough to just use MSE and the built in firewall.I never had any complaints with norton, it worked great, never noticed it at all, but I just can't justify spending $60 for something is MSE is at least or even almost as good.I haven't seen many independent tests of MSE,while I know that Norton is one of the best at detection and removal.

View 4 Replies View RelatedThe computer has worked fine since then, I've used the internet at wi-fi hotspots around my city, with never a single problem...until last night. While I was on-line at home, I was checking a website that I have always checked before without issue when my Windows Defender suddenly popped open and said that my computer was under threat and blocked Internet Explorer from me and started running a diagnosic. Well apparently it said that I had like 26 infections in my computer. That I had worms, spyware, adware, that someone was watching my key logs, etc, etc, and it gave me the option to click on the remove all. So I clicked on it, but instead of doing anything, another message box appeared saying that my Windows Defender is not the full version and that I must either purchase the full version or enter my key code for it. I don't have a key code since I never bought this program, was pre-installed.
Anyways, now whenever I try to open Internet Explorer, the Windows Defender pops up and says that my IE is infected and asks if I would like to purchase the full Windows Defender. I have clicked on both options. If I say "no", the computer blocks my IE, if I say yes, it opens my IE, but instead of taking me to a Windows website, it takes me to www.antivirus-care.com, which my browser says does not exist and instead takes me to another page with a listing of anti-virus program sites to buy from. Well, all this seems fishy to me because I can't do anything with the Windows Defender program. I can't turn it off, I can't change its settings, or even look at other options it has. Instead whenever I try the message window of "would I like to buy the full version now?" appears and keeps appearing.
I get a security alert saying my antivirus software may not
be installed. Then, later I get a popup from Norton saying Windows Firewall
has been turned on. Do u want to use Norton Internet Security instead of
Windows Firewall? My Windows Firewall had always been turned on. This started
the other day after I did salvagerepository to fix something else. Does
Windows Vista recognize Norton? How do I stop these from popping up? Also, my
free subscription to norton ends in a week?
which is better windows firewall on vista or norton and can i run both if i want to ??? and if not why not many thanks

I have never run Windows OneCare, MSCONFIG shows it set to start, the Windows Defender service is set to automatic and Tools | Options has all the checkboxes checked.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been using Vista Ultimate x64 for the last 5 months and have to say it's been a massive learing curve due to its fragility - 4 full rebuilds in the last 4 months - and not much fun when using SATA RAID. Anyway, got up yesterday morning, turned on the computer and it had managed to corrupt itself yet again: Windows Defender, Windows Picture Viewer and a host of desktop icons refused to find their pathways home and so decided against a full rebuild and started the repair option with a boot to the DVD. I set this off running and went to work at 12:30pm...
I came back 5 hours later and still had the dialog box " Finalising Registry" running on my screen! Well, a quick restart and i tried the upgrade option once back in Vista from the DVD. This then took and unbelievable 7 hours to complete and was finally ready - after updates - at 01:20am this morning, but a full clean install would have taken about 1-2 hours to finish, so i'll be doing that in future!.........
Vista Ultimate SP1+. On a couple occasions after turning Windows Sidebar off and later back on I've noticed its sys tray icon has changed to the same icon Windows Defender uses. After a warm boot Sidebar seems to sort itself out. Any rhyme or reason for this?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have to install AVG and they mention that Defender should be disabled. I have Vista Premium and when I searched the Internet for instructions on how to turn off the Defender, I am told to go to Defender and click on Tools and then Options and then go to: Administrator options. Deselect the Use Windows Defender box and press the Save button. My Options does not have Administrator Options at bottom (nor Use Windows Defender box). My Options has two categories: Automatic scanning AND Default actions.
1- Why don't I see/have "Administrator Options?
2- And, how can I disable Defender prior to installing AVG?
Basically is this thing good enough to protect you like an AV program can?

View 9 Replies View RelatedFrom the moment my new Vista Ultimate SP1 machine arrived, Defender hasn't worked. At first, it was crashing. Now it doesn't appear to be running, but MS Update wants to install an update that won't install.
Is there a way to uninstall Defender? I have other products that don't crash now and don't need Defender.
I seem to have Windows defender running on my Vista Ultimate SP 2 laptop. This is despite the fact that I cannot see it in the list of installed programs, and my download archive does not have a version that runs in Vista. I used to have Windows Live OneCare installed, but I've uninstalled that and ran the cleanup tool, yet I still see Defender in my taskbar (although it complains that its definitions are out of date).

I want to turn off Windows Defender in Vista. When I go to the Help page, the wording does not agree with my option. My Default actions allows me to Remove (or permanently uninstall Defender), which I would rather not do unless necessary.
I run Vista Premium using Word 2003 and Norton Internet security: Since updating Last months updates and the various ones since, every time I start up my computer it tells me that Windows Defender is not turned on; this is getting a bit much having to turn it on every time I start up my computer.
