Disable Security Center Windows Defender
Mar 23, 2008
I have vista 64 bit home premium. I have disabled UAC because I find it to be highly annoying. Another thing I find highly annoying is; no matter how much I try to stop it; vista always seems to think I am a moron and sets EVERY SINGLE ONE OF MY FILES to read only. Now I heard if you disable security center/windows defender you can un-readonly everything. I tried that; didnt work; yes I reset to make it active. Then I reactivated them; still didnt work. I tried a document on how to manually turn off Read Only; but even then it didnt work. Once; I dont know how; I managed to turn it off; but every single time that I installed something new it went to read only. It is REALLY annoying; and I swear this is pissing me off something chronic. I cant be a heavy computer user when I cant even do basic system operations since vista seems to think I am a straight jacket. Belive me though; if I dont find a way to turn it off; this computer will be dead and I will be in a striahgt jacket. I want either a way to EFFING TURN THIS OFF. or a patch offical or unoffical I DONT CARE I just want this read only stuff OFF. Now if you think I am overacting. It is hard to live with winamp constantly not showing your last playlist; or opera showing pages you had open when I first transfered the config files across. Trying to change settings on open source programs that refuse to change thanks to this ahem of a system that I cant disactivate. When I do; it turns itself BACK ON .

After recently downloading recommended updates to my Windows Vista Ultimate system when I use MS I.E. to browse I get a red screen with the warning "Personal Security Alert New Data Base Update is Available. Viruses Detected on your PC. Following this is a signup sheet to subscribe ($$) to their Personal Security System. I can't get away from this screen without starting over with IE and once again the same thing happens! My ISP gives me a free McAfee Firewall and Virus Detection System which I have installed. I have turned off MS firewall and Anti Virus System. McAfee has scanned my system and reported it is clean.

Every single time I log in to Windows, that bloody little pop-up comes in the notification area saying that my UAC is off and that this is a horrible problem.I know it's off. I turned it off. Why the hell would I be unaware of that?
So my question is, how do I stop that annoying notice coming up every single time I start Windows?

Defender keeps finding a trojan that it cannot remove. It would appear it has something to do with advertising. I am asked ro re run defender becasue it can not be removed. Sending a report to microsoft consistenly fails and the whole process continues again until i eventually close defender. "ignoring" the finding does not work either. I have Trend micro Securuty Suite and it has never found the same trojan. Nor has 'spy hunter ' found it.Should i disable Defender?

Is Windows Defender an anti-virus program? If so, should I turn it off as Norton Security suite recommends? If I turn it off, how do I manage my start-up programs?

The security center in my computer was disabled, firewall, defender and update. I reset it to active (auto). After I restart the computer those function were disabled again. Even my Norton antivirus software were disabled and the system won't allow to install again. Is this cause by a virus? If so is there a free program in Microsoft web site to remove it. Norton or McAfee said they can remove the malware for a fee ($100.00) even though I am using their software. Or I have to format the computer and reinstall everything. Can someone out there went through the similar problem please share your exprience and solution?

I am currently having a problem with my Vista machine. Only recently I noticed Security center, Windows update, Windows defender, and windows firewall weren't functioning. The services to run these programs aren't there. For example, the security center service isn't in services. System restore is a no go as, well, that got disabled to My guess is a virus or some sort of malware got onto my pc and played riot. I got AVG internet security. I am hoping that I don't have to do a clean install.

When I start up my computer, there is a pop up that says that Windows Firewall is turned off. I click the button to turn it on and then a screen pops up that says "Security Center cannot turn on Windows Firewall." I then click on "Turn on Windows Firewall manually." It then says that it isn't using the recommended settings to protect my computer. I click "update settings now" but then it says that it was unable to make the requested updates. I use Windows Vista and I've had my computer for a year now. This only happened the other day and I have Symantec installed as my anti-virus program. How can I turn Windows Firewall on again?

I am the only user on my laptop. I accepted the Toshiba settings when I bought the machine, but I realise that there are a number of features that are disabled that (as an administrator) I should be able to use. for example:
1. Windows Defender will show me the details of start-up programs but not allow me to remove/enable/disable anything (the buttons are greyed-out/disabled).
2. There are some folders (e.g. in my internet favourites) which are read-only and when I switch read-only off, it ignores what I've done - they remain read-only.

Every time I want to open a .url file using the customized Links menu on the deskbar (channel bar), I get a dialog box with a security warning message "Do you want to open this file?" How do I disable this security warning dialog box from popping up? I am confident my Avast! virus definitions will detect and intercept any virus or spyware attached to any url before the file is opened, so I really don't need this feature, it is annoying.

My OS is Windows Vista Business and I am attempting to disable the auto startup of a program. I located the program in Windows Defender, Category: Startup Programs but all options to "Remove, Disable and Enable" are grayed out. I also noticed the majority though not all auto startup programs in the Startup Category are grayed out. Why is this? What other course of action may I take to disable the unneeded auto startup of unnecessary programs? Also, my inquiry pertains specifically to an HP Digital Camera software.

Media center keeps popping up, I have not been able to find a way to disable it, so that I can use the program only when I want. It is very tiresome to keep have it. open when ever I pop a cd or dvd in to my drive. I would like some control over which program I use to view/listen to the media I have, and not have one pop up automatically.

As soon as you install Windows Vista you are bombarded by the Welcome Center that is designed to help beginner Windows users easily configure their new computer. This new welcome screen is a nice feature the first time you start using Windows vista but quickly becomes annoying.
Disabling the Welcome Center is very easy to do and can speed up your boot as well.
1. Start Regedit....

The computer has worked fine since then, I've used the internet at wi-fi hotspots around my city, with never a single problem...until last night. While I was on-line at home, I was checking a website that I have always checked before without issue when my Windows Defender suddenly popped open and said that my computer was under threat and blocked Internet Explorer from me and started running a diagnosic. Well apparently it said that I had like 26 infections in my computer. That I had worms, spyware, adware, that someone was watching my key logs, etc, etc, and it gave me the option to click on the remove all. So I clicked on it, but instead of doing anything, another message box appeared saying that my Windows Defender is not the full version and that I must either purchase the full version or enter my key code for it. I don't have a key code since I never bought this program, was pre-installed.
Anyways, now whenever I try to open Internet Explorer, the Windows Defender pops up and says that my IE is infected and asks if I would like to purchase the full Windows Defender. I have clicked on both options. If I say "no", the computer blocks my IE, if I say yes, it opens my IE, but instead of taking me to a Windows website, it takes me to www.antivirus-care.com, which my browser says does not exist and instead takes me to another page with a listing of anti-virus program sites to buy from. Well, all this seems fishy to me because I can't do anything with the Windows Defender program. I can't turn it off, I can't change its settings, or even look at other options it has. Instead whenever I try the message window of "would I like to buy the full version now?" appears and keeps appearing.

I just got a new laptop running Vista Home Premium x64, and it's my first experience with both Vista and an x64 OS. I've changed the security settings in IE7 to a custom level, and now I get the notification bar saying "Your current security settings put your computer at risk. etc." I know this can be disabled via gpedit.mcs but of course Vista Home doesn't include that feature. So, a couple questions. Nobody here seems to know much about getting GPedit to work in Vista Home, so I won't even touch that. However, I did see mention of the Microsoft speadsheet that lists all the various group policy settings and their corresponding registry entries. I found the "Disable Security Settings Check Feature" entry, but now I'm not sure what to do with it.
HKLMSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftInternet ExplorerSecurity!DisableSecuritySettingsCheck
HKCUSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftInternet ExplorerSecurity!DisableSecuritySettingsCheck
I can navigate to the Microsoft folder in regedit, but that's where the trail ends. Do I need to create a key or something? I don't have much experience with the registry, and I really want this notification bar gone.

I have a wireless network of 4 computers. 2 x XP desktops 1 x XP laptop and a new Vista desktop. These are networked via a Belkin router. I have absolutely no problems with the network when it is open, however as soon as I enable security settings I encounter problems. The printer (which is conected to the Vista machine, although visible, is not able to be accessed by the XP machines, both Vista and XP machines although showing that they are able to access files on each other do not. As soon as I disable the security settings and become an Open network straight away all three XP machines can print through the Vista machine and I can access and move files around the network no probs. I have had the Vista machine for 9 days now and have spent about 6 hours each day attempting to sort one problem after another out, I have had it back to the technicians at the shop twice for them to resolve simple problems for me and I am getting very frustrated by this whole Vista thing.

I recently removed spyware off of a system Dell Inspiron 530s Running Windows Vista Home Basic.
I used Malware Bytes, and once removed, the computer wouldnt go on line.
I had the owner open up the Services Console and discovered that Security Center, Workstation, Server, and Windows Defender Services were disabled.
I changed the start-up types on these services and for each service I got an error stating that the service cannot start because of windows resource protection service.
I then had the owner run the sfc /scannow and got the same windows resource protection error....

I want to disable ALL security on my Vista System. I don't want any passwords. I want every file visible/readable/writable/executable by ANYBODY who happens onto my network.
I don't want any firewalls. I don't want any antivirus. I don't want any automatic updates of any kind to anything. I don't want any popups asking for permission to do anything. I'd rather not have all the bloat and duplication in folders for different users. I want a single-user system and to be administrator of all things. Yes, I'll put some tiny subset of this back with third-party tools THAT I CONTROL. I've been poking around fixing up one issue after another...but it's a task. Is this info all in one place? Or better yet, a magic incantation to remove ALL of it in one fell swoop?

I'm trying to help out my sister on her laptop (Compaq Vista 32bit). Here are the problems:
Can not access Windows Security Center.. It comes up on the tool bar red with the X. When you try to open it either off the tool bar or even through the Control Center you get: A "open with" window to select the program to open "rundll32.exe". I have tried the tutuorial on this site to change security center from disabled to automatic, this did not work, it defaults back to disabled. Will not start up the Microsoft Security Essentials antivirus program automatically on startup. You must manaul start and either run as adminstrator to start or go through the "open with window" process. All program starts require to go through the "open with window" approach and some that does not work and you need to right click on the program and "run as administrator" to start the program (i.e. intenet exployer). I have manually run Microsoft Security Essentials and removed numerous virus and trojans.
I am familar with XP and Windows 7, not Vista...

Is it possible to disable the Security Center Alerts on Vista (no icon, no notifications) via command line or by script? Turning off UAC by modifying a certain registry entry turned out to be easy (using the reg.exe command line utility), however I can't find a way to do the same for the Security Center Alerts. I am willing to write some scripting code if that is what it takes.
