Disable ALL Security On Vista System
May 14, 2008
I want to disable ALL security on my Vista System. I don't want any passwords. I want every file visible/readable/writable/executable by ANYBODY who happens onto my network.
I don't want any firewalls. I don't want any antivirus. I don't want any automatic updates of any kind to anything. I don't want any popups asking for permission to do anything. I'd rather not have all the bloat and duplication in folders for different users. I want a single-user system and to be administrator of all things. Yes, I'll put some tiny subset of this back with third-party tools THAT I CONTROL. I've been poking around fixing up one issue after another...but it's a task. Is this info all in one place? Or better yet, a magic incantation to remove ALL of it in one fell swoop?

My grandson allowed the vista security virus on their PC I am trying to fix it. It blocked everything I did between using my Daughters laptop and gathering info from the internet I did get the PC Doctor downloaded (took forever) and installed on the infected PC then ran a scan only to find out that I had to purchase the tool to remove it. I did and the Pc worked fine or so I thought.
DD looked up lowes last night and now today it is again posessed it will not let me run system restore everytime I look up something on the internet it redirects me to stupid pages that have nothing to do with what i key in. so I am trying system restore and it wont open it tells me it is already running. This is a vista home basics I have no idea if it is 32 or 64.

I just got a new laptop running Vista Home Premium x64, and it's my first experience with both Vista and an x64 OS. I've changed the security settings in IE7 to a custom level, and now I get the notification bar saying "Your current security settings put your computer at risk. etc." I know this can be disabled via gpedit.mcs but of course Vista Home doesn't include that feature. So, a couple questions. Nobody here seems to know much about getting GPedit to work in Vista Home, so I won't even touch that. However, I did see mention of the Microsoft speadsheet that lists all the various group policy settings and their corresponding registry entries. I found the "Disable Security Settings Check Feature" entry, but now I'm not sure what to do with it.
HKLMSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftInternet ExplorerSecurity!DisableSecuritySettingsCheck
HKCUSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftInternet ExplorerSecurity!DisableSecuritySettingsCheck
I can navigate to the Microsoft folder in regedit, but that's where the trail ends. Do I need to create a key or something? I don't have much experience with the registry, and I really want this notification bar gone.

I have a wireless network of 4 computers. 2 x XP desktops 1 x XP laptop and a new Vista desktop. These are networked via a Belkin router. I have absolutely no problems with the network when it is open, however as soon as I enable security settings I encounter problems. The printer (which is conected to the Vista machine, although visible, is not able to be accessed by the XP machines, both Vista and XP machines although showing that they are able to access files on each other do not. As soon as I disable the security settings and become an Open network straight away all three XP machines can print through the Vista machine and I can access and move files around the network no probs. I have had the Vista machine for 9 days now and have spent about 6 hours each day attempting to sort one problem after another out, I have had it back to the technicians at the shop twice for them to resolve simple problems for me and I am getting very frustrated by this whole Vista thing.

Every single time I log in to Windows, that bloody little pop-up comes in the notification area saying that my UAC is off and that this is a horrible problem.I know it's off. I turned it off. Why the hell would I be unaware of that?
So my question is, how do I stop that annoying notice coming up every single time I start Windows?

After recently downloading recommended updates to my Windows Vista Ultimate system when I use MS I.E. to browse I get a red screen with the warning "Personal Security Alert New Data Base Update is Available. Viruses Detected on your PC. Following this is a signup sheet to subscribe ($$) to their Personal Security System. I can't get away from this screen without starting over with IE and once again the same thing happens! My ISP gives me a free McAfee Firewall and Virus Detection System which I have installed. I have turned off MS firewall and Anti Virus System. McAfee has scanned my system and reported it is clean.

I have vista 64 bit home premium. I have disabled UAC because I find it to be highly annoying. Another thing I find highly annoying is; no matter how much I try to stop it; vista always seems to think I am a moron and sets EVERY SINGLE ONE OF MY FILES to read only. Now I heard if you disable security center/windows defender you can un-readonly everything. I tried that; didnt work; yes I reset to make it active. Then I reactivated them; still didnt work. I tried a document on how to manually turn off Read Only; but even then it didnt work. Once; I dont know how; I managed to turn it off; but every single time that I installed something new it went to read only. It is REALLY annoying; and I swear this is pissing me off something chronic. I cant be a heavy computer user when I cant even do basic system operations since vista seems to think I am a straight jacket. Belive me though; if I dont find a way to turn it off; this computer will be dead and I will be in a striahgt jacket. I want either a way to EFFING TURN THIS OFF. or a patch offical or unoffical I DONT CARE I just want this read only stuff OFF. Now if you think I am overacting. It is hard to live with winamp constantly not showing your last playlist; or opera showing pages you had open when I first transfered the config files across. Trying to change settings on open source programs that refuse to change thanks to this ahem of a system that I cant disactivate. When I do; it turns itself BACK ON .

I am an MCSE and would consider myself pretty savy overall, but this particular problem (which exists in my home network) has me frustrated. I have a PC running Vista Ultimate x64. Attached to that PC (via USB) is a HP Photosmart C3180. My wife's laptop is running XP Professional x86. I am trying to allow her to print to the printer attached to my Vista x64 PC.
I install the printer properly and confirm it working on my Vista x64 PC. I then share it out under the name HPC3180. I disable password protected sharing and under the security settings of the printer I give "Anonymous Logon" permission to access the printer. I know generally I would have to specify the x86 version of the driver under the "Additional Drivers" area in the properties of the printer; but in this case I do not know where to get the .INF files. I can download the drivers for the 32 bit version of XP from HP's site, but they aren't self extracting EXE files so I cannot get the INF file out of them to use. I even tried setting it up (on XP x86 laptop) as a "Local Printer" with a "Local Port" that points the printer. I then tried to use a variety of older and generic drivers. At worst it refused to print entirely. At best I got some sort of seemingly random output from the printer.

Every time I want to open a .url file using the customized Links menu on the deskbar (channel bar), I get a dialog box with a security warning message "Do you want to open this file?" How do I disable this security warning dialog box from popping up? I am confident my Avast! virus definitions will detect and intercept any virus or spyware attached to any url before the file is opened, so I really don't need this feature, it is annoying.

I have been advised to use Erunt as a registry backup and also told that it is best to disable System Restore or only allow it to have 2/3 %. I have used System restore once or twice in the last few years and would not be happy to lose it. What is the opinion of more experienced users than myself?

Can I safely uncheck the following checked items from System Configuration Startup:
SupportSoft sprtcm
HD Audio Control Panel
Google Toolbar Notifier
That would leave only Microsoft Windows Operating System and Trend Micro Internet Security as the 2 items checked for Startup.

I am currently using Vista Home Premium. I had a problem with one of the current updates and had to use system restore. After the restore everything worked fine except that Mc Afee Security would no longer function, with the exception of the Firewall. Mc Afee indicated that the secuerity center was more than 30 days out of date. My system restore was set for less than 24 hours. Is this a normal situation and is there any way to prevent it in the future?

When I connect an iPod or a Western Digital external hard drive to my laptop, using a USB cable, I have to wait for a window to open asking whether I want to scan it or proceed without scanning. This can often take up to one minute to come up on the screen. As I am well aware of what I am doing, I would like to disable this Vista feature. I have already disabled UAC, but not this one. There is no doubt a simple answer, how to accomplish this. If you do respond, please tell me the full path to reach the target, as I do not consider myself to be an expert.

i don't find this on the i'net after a month on google so i'll post here. it seems the alps drivers do not fully support v.x64. doesn't have the disable button anywhere. today vaio help (tier 3, supposedly) finally told me the above which i told there tier 2 a week ago, i guess he didn't read the notes. said i would have to live with it. they wouldn't help w/ registry hack. probably means they didn't know it. bad, bad, bad sony. anyway, to the chase. i saw where linux people could use synaptics drivers. tried the same trick w/ v.x64. there was the button under start>control panel>mousec>device settings>disable. those penguins aren't so bad. i have a severe neurological disease and that touchpad rendered a $1200.00 computer unuseable. sony's response was "live with it." to quote my favorite tech authorities, the three stooges, "chowderheads." let me reiterate "bad sony, bad sony." Drivers | Synaptics v.10.1.8 worked for me on win vista home premium x4, sp1/vaio vgn-fw170j.

Just wondering why the reported Physical Memory in the Task Manager drops to 14%, after an hour or so, from 28% when initially starting the system. Processes drop from 49 to 46. Mainly Trustedinstaller and winupdate processes. I know some applications check for updates upon boot, but I kind of disabled most (if not all) of them except Vista updates. Also one of the many svchost.exe starts off with a reported Commit Size of 177K and later is down to 155K. This of course is not a problem. Just Vista64 curious!

Seen lots on this - have tried to follow advice and even uninstalled McAfee and recreated mail account from scratch on Windows Mail - still no luck - still get the windows security prompt. Cannot download or send any emails. V. frustrating - especially when going through the risk of unistalling protection (which came pre-installed).
Is there a published document from Microsoft on this problem? Some definitive, clear, step-by-step advice for those who simply want to transfer from XP to Vista wihtout these unexpected, business damaging issues.

When I click on an advert in Firefox for a trusted website, I am greeted with the popup box saying "The operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator". This is also happening on programs which open other programs - all of which I give full permission to do.
I never had this problem on XP and do not know how to remove this restriction on Vista. I am the only user on this computer and hold the administrator account.

I currently run Zonealarm Security Suite on my XP Pro machine, and I love it. After a week or so it is totally passive and it catches everything. I paid 10 for a license key on ebay 2 years ago for $10 and I still have 58,000 days left until it expires. Best of all, it leaves an un-noticeable footprint on my machine.
I have 2 AMD 64 4200 Dual Core machines. I recently installed Vista Ultimate 64 on one of them to see how it goes. Unfortunately, Zonealarm won't work on Vista 64. I don't like paying for Security programs but I am not entirely sure free ones up to the task.
I don't trust Microsoft with its firewall, defender, or live one care (They can barely build an operating system let alone defend or ensure it runs properly). Everyone who has ever asked me for PC help usually has McAffee or Norton. McCaffee (at least in my experience with other users) consistently fails to protect a machine, not to mention bogs down the system. Norton 2005 was a decenet product but everything after that seems to be garbage same as Mcaffee. is there a Zonealarm alternative out there for Vista 64

How do I get Vista to stop annoying me about opening programs either at startup or when I open them manually? I've trying opening the security center and telling Vista not to alert me or display tray icon. But when I start up, I still get a publisher-not-verified warning about a program I want to run. And when I try to open it manually (or another app that contains an internal server), Vista (shield.exe) stops and asks me if I want to run it. If I take the checkmark out of "Always warn about this type of program," it's there's the next time anyway. I'd like to disable all this stuff. How do I go about it?

A Dell Inspiron 1521 running Vista. There are several problems that all seem related but the most obvious one is that I can't update Vista. It is set up to update automatically. However, the "New Updates are Available" Icon appears on the task bar. If I click on it a window comes up and immediately disappears. If I hunt through the help menus until I find a link that says "Click to open Windows Update" the same thing happens: a window opens and immediately shuts. Similarly if I go to the control panel and click Windows Update nothing happens.
If I right click on it and choose Explore a window comes up but it is empty. The Default Programs icon is similarly unresponsive. If I click on the Windows Defender Icon and click on that and say to update, it returns error 0x8007045a. In addition to that, the backup/recovery thing returns errors. And when I try to run Ad-Aware it hangs. All of these failures are related to security
