Security: How To Remove This Restriction On Vista
Jun 4, 2008
When I click on an advert in Firefox for a trusted website, I am greeted with the popup box saying "The operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator". This is also happening on programs which open other programs - all of which I give full permission to do.
I never had this problem on XP and do not know how to remove this restriction on Vista. I am the only user on this computer and hold the administrator account.

I have experienced two instances were Add/Remove in Vista does not remove all the software, so that comprehensive installation of similar software is not possible. The first concerned a Scanner, where Add/Remove would not remove all the software, so that installation of the new Scanner is not possible, until a procedure recommended by the Scanner's makers involving modifications to the Registry is carried out, which I could not possibly do myself, so it means hiring a Professional to do the job!
The second concerns Spellex. Here again the old version has not been removed, so that installation of the latest version is not fully carried out, making the software useless. How can Microsoft produce Windows where such problems occur? What is the experience of others in case this is a fault with my computer?

Since installing service pack 1, I cannot find windows media player or the Media center. I have looked every where and when I tried to download it again I got the following message. There is a more recent version of Windows Media player (11.0.6001.7000) already installed on your computer. It is not possible to use an older installation package (11.0.5721.5146) to install files or to repair your current version of the player.
I can't even find it to uninstall it and then download it again! I have just found another post which said to right click on the desktop and type in C:|windowsehomeehshell.exe to create a shortcut. This worked but when i tried to open the application using administrstor option I got this message. Windows cannot open this program because it has been prevented by a software restriction policy. For more information contact your system administrator. I am the administrator and I don't know what I'm talking about!! Any ideas please???

If I get the OEM version, I know that a restriction in the license means it cannot be transferred to another computer. I need to get clarification on the following:
1) What happens if my computer crashes and I am told I have to reformat the hard drive and re-install Windows? Am I forced to buy a new license?
2) What if I want to have a backup hard drive, or upgrade my existing hard drive to a bigger one? If it's the same computer and only the hard drive is upgraded or a second one added, does that mandate a new license?

I have two hard drives ,each hard drive is partitioned into 2.
Drive 1
Partition C:
Partition D:
Drive 2
Partition E:
Partition F:
I have Vista Home Premium on C: Drive. Have Windows 7 on E: Drive. My Boot File is on the C : Drive for both Operating Systems. If I want to remove Vista on Drive 1 , Partition C: First of all what would be the easiest way of removing Vista? Reformat the drive or can you uninstall it with the programs?? If I do Format the C: Drive,I would loose the Boot Manager File. I would probably not be able to even boot into Win 7. If I can not boot into 7 Can I insert the DVD do a repair to bring back the Boot file to C:? Or can I just use a second party Boot Manager like Easy BCD to configure Boot manager??

If I want to format my HD on vista or remove partitions, what is the procedure? All I have is the back up DVD's that I made. My original HD gave me intermittent problems so I abandoned it. Is there any way to get the recovery program from the original disk onto my new hard drive?

Seen lots on this - have tried to follow advice and even uninstalled McAfee and recreated mail account from scratch on Windows Mail - still no luck - still get the windows security prompt. Cannot download or send any emails. V. frustrating - especially when going through the risk of unistalling protection (which came pre-installed).
Is there a published document from Microsoft on this problem? Some definitive, clear, step-by-step advice for those who simply want to transfer from XP to Vista wihtout these unexpected, business damaging issues.

I keep reading about folks who needed to remove some sticks of ram before installing vista 64-bit. Is this mandatory? I have 4 gig of Ram and I really don't want to open up my box and remove 2 gigs, as my computer is large and I'd have to remove memory cooling, etc. (I know, lazy) Do some people with 4 gigs ram succeed in installing vista without removing memory?

I want to disable ALL security on my Vista System. I don't want any passwords. I want every file visible/readable/writable/executable by ANYBODY who happens onto my network.
I don't want any firewalls. I don't want any antivirus. I don't want any automatic updates of any kind to anything. I don't want any popups asking for permission to do anything. I'd rather not have all the bloat and duplication in folders for different users. I want a single-user system and to be administrator of all things. Yes, I'll put some tiny subset of this back with third-party tools THAT I CONTROL. I've been poking around fixing up one issue after another...but it's a task. Is this info all in one place? Or better yet, a magic incantation to remove ALL of it in one fell swoop?

I currently run Zonealarm Security Suite on my XP Pro machine, and I love it. After a week or so it is totally passive and it catches everything. I paid 10 for a license key on ebay 2 years ago for $10 and I still have 58,000 days left until it expires. Best of all, it leaves an un-noticeable footprint on my machine.
I have 2 AMD 64 4200 Dual Core machines. I recently installed Vista Ultimate 64 on one of them to see how it goes. Unfortunately, Zonealarm won't work on Vista 64. I don't like paying for Security programs but I am not entirely sure free ones up to the task.
I don't trust Microsoft with its firewall, defender, or live one care (They can barely build an operating system let alone defend or ensure it runs properly). Everyone who has ever asked me for PC help usually has McAffee or Norton. McCaffee (at least in my experience with other users) consistently fails to protect a machine, not to mention bogs down the system. Norton 2005 was a decenet product but everything after that seems to be garbage same as Mcaffee. is there a Zonealarm alternative out there for Vista 64

The arrows in the icons in Vista are annoying me. After a bit of googling, I've found out that a utility called 'Vista Shortcut Manager' can be used to remove those arrows without any manual registry editing. Thing is I can find only the x86 version of the software but I'm using the Vista x64.

How do I get Vista to stop annoying me about opening programs either at startup or when I open them manually? I've trying opening the security center and telling Vista not to alert me or display tray icon. But when I start up, I still get a publisher-not-verified warning about a program I want to run. And when I try to open it manually (or another app that contains an internal server), Vista (shield.exe) stops and asks me if I want to run it. If I take the checkmark out of "Always warn about this type of program," it's there's the next time anyway. I'd like to disable all this stuff. How do I go about it?

My grandson allowed the vista security virus on their PC I am trying to fix it. It blocked everything I did between using my Daughters laptop and gathering info from the internet I did get the PC Doctor downloaded (took forever) and installed on the infected PC then ran a scan only to find out that I had to purchase the tool to remove it. I did and the Pc worked fine or so I thought.
DD looked up lowes last night and now today it is again posessed it will not let me run system restore everytime I look up something on the internet it redirects me to stupid pages that have nothing to do with what i key in. so I am trying system restore and it wont open it tells me it is already running. This is a vista home basics I have no idea if it is 32 or 64.

A Dell Inspiron 1521 running Vista. There are several problems that all seem related but the most obvious one is that I can't update Vista. It is set up to update automatically. However, the "New Updates are Available" Icon appears on the task bar. If I click on it a window comes up and immediately disappears. If I hunt through the help menus until I find a link that says "Click to open Windows Update" the same thing happens: a window opens and immediately shuts. Similarly if I go to the control panel and click Windows Update nothing happens.
If I right click on it and choose Explore a window comes up but it is empty. The Default Programs icon is similarly unresponsive. If I click on the Windows Defender Icon and click on that and say to update, it returns error 0x8007045a. In addition to that, the backup/recovery thing returns errors. And when I try to run Ad-Aware it hangs. All of these failures are related to security

Been having issues with my lap top recently so on the advice of a bod on here I decided to get a better fire wall than Zone Alarm free. I am now using the free trial version of Zone Alarm Security Suite and will buy it if it is any good. I ran a virus and spyware scan and the virus scan came back with nothing and the spyware had 3 items. I then ran my free version of adaware and this found 74 items!! Is it best to keep using both these products together, or should I just find something better than ZA? At a loss as to what is the best thing to use. Running Vista 32 bit.

My computer is running the concistency check. It's at stage 3 and when it's almost complete it's starts to "replace invalid security Id with default security id for file ******" it's been doing this for a while now and I was wondering what I can do to speed it up. It's currently at 170000, and if I try to restart the computer the login screen will not load if I skip the disk check.

Have you had any problems with USB flash drives with Vista? I saw articles saying that Vista doesn't have "Safely Remove Hardware" like in XP, and some people aren't sure when to remove the flash drive from the computer. Is one USB flash drive different from another, except in size?

I think I messed up my hard drive while trying to erase the EISA partition on it. It's a Gateway P7811-FX laptop with a single 200 GB hard drive. Before, I only had 1 main partition: the C: Drive (176.31 GB), along with the hidden 10 GB EISA partition. After making recovery disks, I followed this tutorial: Delete and Remove to Unlock EISA Hidden Recovery or Diagnostic Partition in Vista » My Digital Life
Following that, I went in Disk Management. The hidden partition showed up, but I couldn't extend the C drive to use the unallocated 10 GB, so I converted it to a simple 10 GB volume. Then I used Acronis Disk Director Suite and merged the two partitions. And now, I can't do anything in Disk Management. There's only one partition now (186.31 GB), but when I right click on it, there's no options to create, shrink, delete, or extend the partition. They were there before, but the only option that shows up is Help.
Under Status, it says Healthy (Active, EISA Configuration). I think I merged the partitions the wrong way, so now there's no "System, Boot, Page File..." partition. Everything is on the EISA partition. When I try to run Acronis, the program doesn't load up. I've tried using Diskpart but I can't create any new partitions either.
