Jun 15, 2008Defender keeps finding a trojan that it cannot remove. It would appear it has something to do with advertising. I am asked ro re run defender becasue it can not be removed. Sending a report to microsoft consistenly fails and the whole process continues again until i eventually close defender. "ignoring" the finding does not work either. I have Trend micro Securuty Suite and it has never found the same trojan. Nor has 'spy hunter ' found it.Should i disable Defender?

Mar 23, 2008I have vista 64 bit home premium. I have disabled UAC because I find it to be highly annoying. Another thing I find highly annoying is; no matter how much I try to stop it; vista always seems to think I am a moron and sets EVERY SINGLE ONE OF MY FILES to read only. Now I heard if you disable security center/windows defender you can un-readonly everything. I tried that; didnt work; yes I reset to make it active. Then I reactivated them; still didnt work. I tried a document on how to manually turn off Read Only; but even then it didnt work. Once; I dont know how; I managed to turn it off; but every single time that I installed something new it went to read only. It is REALLY annoying; and I swear this is pissing me off something chronic. I cant be a heavy computer user when I cant even do basic system operations since vista seems to think I am a straight jacket. Belive me though; if I dont find a way to turn it off; this computer will be dead and I will be in a striahgt jacket. I want either a way to EFFING TURN THIS OFF. or a patch offical or unoffical I DONT CARE I just want this read only stuff OFF. Now if you think I am overacting. It is hard to live with winamp constantly not showing your last playlist; or opera showing pages you had open when I first transfered the config files across. Trying to change settings on open source programs that refuse to change thanks to this ahem of a system that I cant disactivate. When I do; it turns itself BACK ON .

I'm having trouble with Win Defender Definitions updates so I'm working via e-mail with MS to reset my Security Settings and Permissions. One of their suggestions is to create a batch file using Run==>Cmd==notepad and have this file contain the following:

Now I'm having trouble saving this file as a batch file so that I can double click it to make it run under a Dos application. If saved correctly, I'm supposed to be able to double left click it or right click it and select `Run As Administrator'. No matter what I call it (reset.bat, reset.txt) or no matter what file type I save is as, when I double click it, it won't `run' or when I right click it, Run as Administrator is not an option. Am I doing something wrong? Paul C. Do I have a virus.
How To Disable Updates
Nov 8, 2008Everything was relatively hunky dory until a recent update which prevented my machine from booting. I went to system restore, and it worked. Tried the update again with the same result, and again I did a system restore. Clearly this update is a problem for me. Can anyone tell me how to disable updates?

Oct 17, 2009I used to have Vista Home Basic on my computer. I have a Logitech mouse that came with software, and it displayed a Logitech Mouse and Keyboard icon in the system tray. You could adjust mouse settings, and it told you when your wireless mouse's batteries were dying. So I got a new hard drive and a version of Vista Home Premium. Installed Vista and all of my programs, including the Logitech software. Now when I login I get the message that Windows wants to run setpointupdate.exe and I have to click Allow or Cancel. I never got this message with Vista Home Basic.
I've already Googled setpointupdate.exe and read many posts (including one on this site) saying that you have to go into your Logitech settings and disable automatic updates (tried that, didn't work), or that you had to uninstall your Logitech software all-together. But I want the software - I never change my mouse settings, but I like that the system tray icon warns me when the batteries are dying. Yes, I could uninstall the software and figure out on my own that the batteries are dying (by my mouse stopping working), but why should I have to uninstall this Logitech software? Isn't there a way to tell Windows that setpointupdate.exe is ok to run and that I don't have to click Allow EVERY time I login?

Mar 23, 2008I am the only user on my laptop. I accepted the Toshiba settings when I bought the machine, but I realise that there are a number of features that are disabled that (as an administrator) I should be able to use. for example:
1. Windows Defender will show me the details of start-up programs but not allow me to remove/enable/disable anything (the buttons are greyed-out/disabled).
2. There are some folders (e.g. in my internet favourites) which are read-only and when I switch read-only off, it ignores what I've done - they remain read-only.

May 18, 2008My OS is Windows Vista Business and I am attempting to disable the auto startup of a program. I located the program in Windows Defender, Category: Startup Programs but all options to "Remove, Disable and Enable" are grayed out. I also noticed the majority though not all auto startup programs in the Startup Category are grayed out. Why is this? What other course of action may I take to disable the unneeded auto startup of unnecessary programs? Also, my inquiry pertains specifically to an HP Digital Camera software.

According to my computer no updates available however updates were last installed on 03/13/08 and yet when you look at installed updates it shows a windows defender update installed today. I have been reading several posts on this problem and have noticed that Carey Frisch posted a link to troubleshoot and now here is a problem and that is none of these apply to me... Windows Folder Name Permanent?
May 4, 2008I recently bought my computer from a family member and now that I am looking at the settings and everything... I changed the User Account Name to mine (Johnny) but when I check the Users folder it displays two folders which are Jose and Public. My brothers name (Jose) stayed. When I check the Desktop menu John appears as the main folder. How come the folder (which is the same as Johnny's) in the Users section differs in name... How do i change it, I have tried everything I could think of from changing the user's name to changing the comp's name.

Defender Disabling, Turn Off The Defender
Apr 21, 2009I have to install AVG and they mention that Defender should be disabled. I have Vista Premium and when I searched the Internet for instructions on how to turn off the Defender, I am told to go to Defender and click on Tools and then Options and then go to: Administrator options. Deselect the Use Windows Defender box and press the Save button. My Options does not have Administrator Options at bottom (nor Use Windows Defender box). My Options has two categories: Automatic scanning AND Default actions.
1- Why don't I see/have "Administrator Options?
2- And, how can I disable Defender prior to installing AVG?
Windows Defender Spyware: Open Internet Explorer, The Windows Defender Pops Up And Says That My IE Is Infected?
Feb 11, 2010The computer has worked fine since then, I've used the internet at wi-fi hotspots around my city, with never a single problem...until last night. While I was on-line at home, I was checking a website that I have always checked before without issue when my Windows Defender suddenly popped open and said that my computer was under threat and blocked Internet Explorer from me and started running a diagnosic. Well apparently it said that I had like 26 infections in my computer. That I had worms, spyware, adware, that someone was watching my key logs, etc, etc, and it gave me the option to click on the remove all. So I clicked on it, but instead of doing anything, another message box appeared saying that my Windows Defender is not the full version and that I must either purchase the full version or enter my key code for it. I don't have a key code since I never bought this program, was pre-installed.
Anyways, now whenever I try to open Internet Explorer, the Windows Defender pops up and says that my IE is infected and asks if I would like to purchase the full Windows Defender. I have clicked on both options. If I say "no", the computer blocks my IE, if I say yes, it opens my IE, but instead of taking me to a Windows website, it takes me to www.antivirus-care.com, which my browser says does not exist and instead takes me to another page with a listing of anti-virus program sites to buy from. Well, all this seems fishy to me because I can't do anything with the Windows Defender program. I can't turn it off, I can't change its settings, or even look at other options it has. Instead whenever I try the message window of "would I like to buy the full version now?" appears and keeps appearing.
6 Important Updates As Of 03.12.2010, Hide The Updates
Mar 11, 2010Desktop PC will be one year next month. I did not renew the Microsoft Office after trial period that came as a package w/ no future intention of acquiring it. I'm using the free Open Office program - word processing mostly at this time. Is there anything in the list below that is of importance? I only have a basic PC with DVD player for movies, etc. No scanner, printer or fax. Not even external hard drive or usb flash drive. Otherwise, I understand that I can just choose to hide the updates, so it will not keep reminding me. Also, I choose to keep my OS w/ Srvce pk 1 and MS IE version 7 for as long as I'll be able to. I had too many probs with Srvce pk 2 and MS IE version 8. Your opinion, if any, is welcome.......

That's okay with me because it remembers to do so before I make system changes, etc. I like to create manual restore points. I do this when making major changes I want to be able to roll back to (like installing SP1) and I want to keep these restore points for an indefinite time. However, the system puts these restore points in the same queue as the system defined restore points. Now for the question: Is there a way to make a restore point "permanent?" I do want the system to overwrite my restore points until *I* decide that they are no longer needed.

Win Defender Has Not Urn
Mar 23, 2008Have been running Vista Home Basic since Mar 07, with updates on download and notify, all up to date, have just checked. Today noticed no icon for Defender in Quick Launch Toolbar, looked to change display view, no icon to select in list. Checked security centre, Defender not running. Used Start, All programmes to start defender. Opened Options, checked for Admin authority and all users, both ticked. Unticked the admin user, selected save change, then reversed the process to add tick, and saved, Defender icon appeared, and almost immediately started scanning system. Whats up doc?? I now suspect Defender hasn't run for a couple of days but not sure. Also, why no notification from Security centre? All the other ticks seem to be in place on the options screen, so just a little concerned about my security status.

May 5, 2008I've just noticed that Defender isn't running, even though the Registry key(HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun) is there. The path specified by this key (%ProgramFiles%Windows DefenderMSASCui.exe -hide) is valid. I can copy and paste it into a Run box and the process appears in the Task Manager (and stays there until I reboot). If I view the System Startup page in Spybot S&D the key exists. I've actually changed '%ProgramFiles%' to 'C:Program Files' (without the quotes) to see if it makes a difference - it doesn't. If I view the Startups tab in The Ultimate Troubleshooter it
finds the key but shows File Not Found in the Launch Command field.I'm at a bit of a loss. Defender Keeps Being Turned Off
Feb 6, 2009Every time I boot up I get an alert telling me that Defender has is not turned on. I turn it on an everything is hunky dory until the next time I boot up and we have to go through the same process again. This is only a recent thing and as far as I can tell the system is clear of viruses and spyware. Can anyone offer me any insight? (It may or may not be relevant but anti-virus software (Kaspersky 7.0) is suddenly not visible to the Security Centre either. It runs ok but is Vista thinks I'm running without anti-virus software...)
