Defender: Check For Updates
Jun 11, 2008The tray icon for defender has a yellow exclamation point. I tell it to check for updates and it seems to succeed but the exclamation point stays there. Is this normal?

Jan 29, 2009My windows update is unable to check for updates, an whenever I manually check for updates, Install now shows up, once the installation process begins, a couple of minutes go by and windows returns to checking for updates, and I am right back to Check for updates for your computer. I've checked the history, and so far KB948610 has failed 4 times, and KB953733 once in the past (windows apparently never tried again).

Apr 6, 2008Vista Ultimate PC that is not downloading and installing Microsoft Updates. If a manual check for updates is initiated the user gets the error "Windows Is Unable To Check For Updates". One update, Office 2007 SP1, has been downloaded but if the user tries to install it Microsoft Update hangs. This problem appears to have come about because the PC is connected to an ADSL Modem/Router which hasn't been able to connect for three months. The ADSL problem has now been resolved. BITS and the Windows Update service are started and set to Automatic. I don't have easy access to this machine.

Apr 25, 2010I'm running Windows Home Premium, SP2. Windows Defender, Spyware Doctor, MBAM, SAS and CCleaner. MS Office 2007. 2 GB of RAM. All WU's are current. System is running fine. I'm having trouble with Win Defender Definitions updates so I'm working via e-mail with MS to reset my Security Settings and Permissions. One of their suggestions is to create a batch file using Run==>Cmd==notepad and have this file contain the following:

Now I'm having trouble saving this file as a batch file so that I can double click it to make it run under a Dos application. If saved correctly, I'm supposed to be able to double left click it or right click it and select `Run As Administrator'. No matter what I call it (reset.bat, reset.txt) or no matter what file type I save is as, when I double click it, it won't `run' or when I right click it, Run as Administrator is not an option. Am I doing something wrong? Paul C. Do I have a virus.

Jul 29, 2009Would be VERY useful if under the "show" drop down window, include "My threads" so user doesn't have to check email for updates. Yes, I could do a search for for my posts, but that requires additional steps for something that may result in no changes or if I just wanted to check quickly. If there are instructions someplace on how to do this, then another suggestion would be to put the Q&A in the FAQs. Its so hard to find info on many MS & related sites, that you have to prepare yourself that you won't find the answer on the first try and expect it to be a time sink, therefore unless its stopping you from completing an important task, some may not want to takes the time and keep getting frustrated until they are ready to take the time.

According to my computer no updates available however updates were last installed on 03/13/08 and yet when you look at installed updates it shows a windows defender update installed today. I have been reading several posts on this problem and have noticed that Carey Frisch posted a link to troubleshoot and now here is a problem and that is none of these apply to me... Mar 26, 2008Vista started giving a blue screen a couple of days ago. Mentioned something about a bad device, but no new devices have been added. Went through the typical steps, tried to boot in safe mode and got the following errors:
AtBroker.exe The application failed to initialize properly. Click OK.
Explorer.exe The application failed to initialize properly. Blue Screen
Then booted to my install dvd, tried to fix errors. Came back with a failed check at the file system integrity check. Ran the check a second time and no errors are found. Can't boot in safe mode, and when i try to repair errors I get no errors found.
Defender Disabling, Turn Off The Defender
Apr 21, 2009I have to install AVG and they mention that Defender should be disabled. I have Vista Premium and when I searched the Internet for instructions on how to turn off the Defender, I am told to go to Defender and click on Tools and then Options and then go to: Administrator options. Deselect the Use Windows Defender box and press the Save button. My Options does not have Administrator Options at bottom (nor Use Windows Defender box). My Options has two categories: Automatic scanning AND Default actions.
1- Why don't I see/have "Administrator Options?
2- And, how can I disable Defender prior to installing AVG?
Windows Defender Spyware: Open Internet Explorer, The Windows Defender Pops Up And Says That My IE Is Infected?
Feb 11, 2010The computer has worked fine since then, I've used the internet at wi-fi hotspots around my city, with never a single problem...until last night. While I was on-line at home, I was checking a website that I have always checked before without issue when my Windows Defender suddenly popped open and said that my computer was under threat and blocked Internet Explorer from me and started running a diagnosic. Well apparently it said that I had like 26 infections in my computer. That I had worms, spyware, adware, that someone was watching my key logs, etc, etc, and it gave me the option to click on the remove all. So I clicked on it, but instead of doing anything, another message box appeared saying that my Windows Defender is not the full version and that I must either purchase the full version or enter my key code for it. I don't have a key code since I never bought this program, was pre-installed.
Anyways, now whenever I try to open Internet Explorer, the Windows Defender pops up and says that my IE is infected and asks if I would like to purchase the full Windows Defender. I have clicked on both options. If I say "no", the computer blocks my IE, if I say yes, it opens my IE, but instead of taking me to a Windows website, it takes me to www.antivirus-care.com, which my browser says does not exist and instead takes me to another page with a listing of anti-virus program sites to buy from. Well, all this seems fishy to me because I can't do anything with the Windows Defender program. I can't turn it off, I can't change its settings, or even look at other options it has. Instead whenever I try the message window of "would I like to buy the full version now?" appears and keeps appearing.
6 Important Updates As Of 03.12.2010, Hide The Updates
Mar 11, 2010Desktop PC will be one year next month. I did not renew the Microsoft Office after trial period that came as a package w/ no future intention of acquiring it. I'm using the free Open Office program - word processing mostly at this time. Is there anything in the list below that is of importance? I only have a basic PC with DVD player for movies, etc. No scanner, printer or fax. Not even external hard drive or usb flash drive. Otherwise, I understand that I can just choose to hide the updates, so it will not keep reminding me. Also, I choose to keep my OS w/ Srvce pk 1 and MS IE version 7 for as long as I'll be able to. I had too many probs with Srvce pk 2 and MS IE version 8. Your opinion, if any, is welcome.......

Before the chkdisk program start you have the option to skip it, if you do so you get a screen saying "Vista is Configuring the update 3/3" and then restart again...
The lap top have a rescue partition, with an auto-fix option, but it didin't worked, it was on running it all the night

Apr 23, 2008When using the Spell Check, I inadvertantly clicked on the "Add" button, which put a word I misspelled into my Spell Check list. I would like to remove this unwanted word, but I cannot figure out to get rid of it, since there isn't a "Remove" button in the Spell Check window. Does anyone know if this word can be taken out of Spell Check?

Mar 23, 2008Have been running Vista Home Basic since Mar 07, with updates on download and notify, all up to date, have just checked. Today noticed no icon for Defender in Quick Launch Toolbar, looked to change display view, no icon to select in list. Checked security centre, Defender not running. Used Start, All programmes to start defender. Opened Options, checked for Admin authority and all users, both ticked. Unticked the admin user, selected save change, then reversed the process to add tick, and saved, Defender icon appeared, and almost immediately started scanning system. Whats up doc?? I now suspect Defender hasn't run for a couple of days but not sure. Also, why no notification from Security centre? All the other ticks seem to be in place on the options screen, so just a little concerned about my security status.

In virtually every other Microsoft product we have both English (American) and English (True or UK as normally quoted). May 15, 2010About 6 months ago I ran a Check Disk of my C Drive (using the Vista Error Checking tool), and checked both boxes before starting (Auto fix file system errors and Scan for/attempt recovery of bad sectors).
It ran thru the 1st 5 of the 6 checks without finding an error.
On the 6th and final check it runs, it hung (or the 4th of the 5 checks it runs - can't remember if it's 5 or 6 it runs). . I believe it began the check, but stopped and didn't move any further. A few hours later it still hadn't moved, so I did a hard shutdown....

Apr 12, 2009i was just wondering why i have 4 gig of ram installed on vista, Control Panal/System/Memory (Ram) - 4GB But Program such as Auslogics boost speed and other programs that check the Ram installed, only Pick up 3446.51 MB installed. Every other program says that Digit, why am i not getting the Full 4 Gig, Or how can i make it 4 Gig in total?
