today I ordered a ZT Affinity Phenom II X4 965 3.4GHz 1GB Radeon 5450 Blu-Ray ROM Desktop w/ Windows Professional 64bit. This will be my first Win7 PC. What should I do before using the PC everyday?
I'm thinking drop the DVDBlu Ray player to a very low drive letter, setup a permanent swap file. and I'd like to partition the 2TB HDD. Do I need third party software to partition a Win7 HDD? What else would you do to set up this PC?
I've just bought a 4GB flash drive to use as a ReadyBoost drive. However, it
occurred to me that putting the swap file on might be a better idea. It's
going to be mounted inside the case of the PC, so not easily removable.
I can't synchronize since 4 days with this server and I have no idea when windows synchronize the time with this server successfully lasttime.
I read some psot in some forums, but this posts were from 2007.
(The question is not "How to select another time server", the question is if someone knows something about time.windows.com)
I recently bought my computer from a family member and now that I am looking at the settings and everything... I changed the User Account Name to mine (Johnny) but when I check the Users folder it displays two folders which are Jose and Public. My brothers name (Jose) stayed. When I check the Desktop menu John appears as the main folder. How come the folder (which is the same as Johnny's) in the Users section differs in name... How do i change it, I have tried everything I could think of from changing the user's name to changing the comp's name.

Verify that the file exists exists in your system and that you have sufficient permissions to update it. I have tried to open the cd and run it as an administrator and that did not work either. Since this is a new laptop, the trial version for 2007 was installed but i believe i removed it. I know this was a post long ago but I still can not get this to work. SP1 is installed on this laptop.

But as we updated our Laptop with Vista SP1 & SP2, the network has become a one way only. We can transfer files to the rest of the network PCs, but the Vista Laptop does not let us in. We do see it listed in our network.
We had to re-format the laptop drive and as we loaded the Vista back again, we were able to transfer files two way, but as the SP1 and SP2 update was loaded, file transfer has become one way only. Did go through the setup on the Laptop drive as we did before. What are we missing in SP1 & SP2 updates?
I am trying to help someone running Vista Home Premium setup his network to share files and folders with his XP Home laptop. Oddly enough, there are no share options AT ALL. No share buttons or no share options in the context menus -- NOTHING. We've named the network and simply went out to share a printer (which we have the option to share) but it turns itself off. Same in Network and Sharing Center. We turn the options ON and then turn themselves OFF. We've done all the rebooting, etc. and still no go. I have gone through all the disabling of the UAC and ownership and permissions, et. al. but, can't get anywhere without the SHARE OPTION being available. Is his install of Windows Vista Home Premium broken or needing to be reinstalled? Could that be the problem? Could it have been setup improperly? I have successfully done this before on my Vista Business computer and my XP Pro laptop and although i did have a few 'permission' problems, they were at least workable.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a nit problem that has followed me from XP and maybe earlier. When I install an OS, I normally have the swap on a drive other than the OS. This seems to confuse the recycle bin in that if I delete something, it will not show until I reboot. When it then shows full, and I empty the bin, it still shows full. I deleted the cache (came back exact same size) and deleted the bins on the 2 raid sets and the sata drive. They reappeared but the desktop bin has the same behavior. More a pita than a major issue. BTW, 20GB memory, so deleted the swap, Ideas?

I dont know where I found it but it was there on my hard drive back then. I have searched my vista pc but have not found it. I remember rerunning setup for windows 98 was a cure all. and made my pc fast as new again, It would even work with all my programs still installed. could I get it off a borrowed vista DVD? or is it somewhere on my hard drive?

When I start Windows Mail, which seems to work fine, I eventually have to shut down 3 series of popup windows having to do with the installation of Microsoft Outlook 2007, which I do not want installed because, apparently, the version which came with my Vista Home Premium OEM is trial only and I can only start it a limited number of times before it expires (as I found out when I opened Word). View 5 Replies View Relatedwhen i turn on my computer, an error message comes saying "Windows failed to load because a file is missing or corrupt File: Netio.sys Status: 0xc0000221" This started when i was clearing my computer of useless programs, and after i deleted Realtime player or Quicktime player, (can't remember which) an error message jumped from the taskbar saying something about Network device driver. After that every time i start the computer, the "Windows failed to load" message pops up. The first half a year, it was solved by pressing enter, to "Choose an operating system to start: Windows Vista" and then to "Windows error recovery (start windows normally, safe mode etc)" and back to "Windows failed to start", repeating it 3-20 times. Then i had a familiar "Unexpected shutdown" during a game, and now, the "Enter spamming technique" doesn't work anymore. All i can access at the moment is Windows memory diagnostic tool, and Bios setup utility. Is there any way to fix this through the setup utility or some other manner?

That's okay with me because it remembers to do so before I make system changes, etc. I like to create manual restore points. I do this when making major changes I want to be able to roll back to (like installing SP1) and I want to keep these restore points for an indefinite time. However, the system puts these restore points in the same queue as the system defined restore points. Now for the question: Is there a way to make a restore point "permanent?" I do want the system to overwrite my restore points until *I* decide that they are no longer needed.
