Extend Swap Memoy Size Manually

Oct 16, 2008

Excessive memory and cpu use when loading ‘heavy’ internetsites like runescape, stardoll, etc (my children are experiencing most of the problem…). Event viewer indicates ‘excessive page swapping’ and I tried to extend the swap memory size manually, this did not help either. It does not matter which browser is in use (tries IEXPL en FIREFOX). JAVA runs with the latest edition. No memory problems found with memory scan...,System is defragmented on a regular base,No malware found,Tried to start up without virusscan (sophos),Problem started a couple of weeks ago, system run normal before Memory use running heavy java appr 200MB ,Memory use homepage only 2 MB,PC performance index 3. MSINFO.exeinfo: 1G installed; 767 total phys mem; 116 available I wonder why there is only 116 MB physical memory available What causes the degradation: 1GB -> installed memory to 767MB total physical memory -> 116MB available memory? (and this is just after start up, no browsre loaded) Number and 'weight' and weight of boot programs is very low.

Recycle Bin Will Not Show Until Reboot (swap)

Jan 29, 2010

I have a nit problem that has followed me from XP and maybe earlier. When I install an OS, I normally have the swap on a drive other than the OS. This seems to confuse the recycle bin in that if I delete something, it will not show until I reboot. When it then shows full, and I empty the bin, it still shows full. I deleted the cache (came back exact same size) and deleted the bins on the 2 raid sets and the sata drive. They reappeared but the desktop bin has the same behavior. More a pita than a major issue. BTW, 20GB memory, so deleted the swap, Ideas?

ReadyBoost Or Swap File On Flash Drive?

I've just bought a 4GB flash drive to use as a ReadyBoost drive. However, it
occurred to me that putting the swap file on might be a better idea. It's
going to be mounted inside the case of the PC, so not easily removable.

Windows 7: Setup A Permanent Swap File

Mar 16, 2010

today I ordered a ZT Affinity Phenom II X4 965 3.4GHz 1GB Radeon 5450 Blu-Ray ROM Desktop w/ Windows Professional 64bit. This will be my first Win7 PC. What should I do before using the PC everyday?

I'm thinking drop the DVDBlu Ray player to a very low drive letter, setup a permanent swap file. and I'd like to partition the 2TB HDD. Do I need third party software to partition a Win7 HDD? What else would you do to set up this PC?

How To Extend Partition?

Sep 10, 2009

i had 3 partitions on my HDD. i backed them up and deleted them to make room for a custom partition. when i finished deleting them the disk management said i had 2 unallocated partitions. i checked in disk part and it showed only my "main" vista partition existed. my vista partition is "partition 2" and i was able to extend it into "partition 3" (one of the unallocated partitions) via disk management, but i cant add "partition 1" (also an unallocated partition) to my main partition.

I am using Vista x64 with a 3ware 9650SE raid controller as a redundant raid5 data drive. I added a 4th 1TB harddrive, and I am trying to extend the volume to merge with the new space currently available. I can't seem to do that though because "Extend Volume" is greyed out, and I can't figure out what is wrong. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? Attached are screenshots that may help.

Folder Size In Size Column

While browsing files and folders I've noticed something extreemly annoying. You can see the size of individual files in the Size column but you cant see the folder's contents size. This extreemly frustrating and I cant seem to find where I can enable that function. I know you can scroll your mouse over folders one at a time and a window will apear and you can see the size then, but thats just inconveniant for what Im doing. I need to be able to glance at multiple folder sizes constantly.

How To Delete A Partition And Extend The Volume?

Dec 22, 2007

how to delete a partition and extend the volume, and it seems pretty basic. I do have a question though. My C partition is 50GB, and I have a new volume E partition of 100Gb. I also have unallocated space left of 550Gb (750Gb seagate). I think I want to just want to have one big partition. Not sure if it's a good idea, but I was wondering if I need to go ahead and format the unallocated space first, or will I have an option to do it? I did right click on it, and I got an option to make it a simple volume or something similar, but thought I'd wait a bit on that.

Cant Extend Main Partition Back

Aug 11, 2009

so here is my problem. I partitioned my c drive to make room for a test windows 7 install. well apparently my DVD burner hates me, so i never got the chance to try it out. The partition is 30GB. Now it says free space. but i cant extend my main partition back to it was. It says it's an extended partition. Do i have to make it primary to extend the c drive? And if so, how would i go about that? It also asked me, when not a drive, if i wanted to delete the partition... Would that make it primary? It says the partition will become inaccesible if you delete it...

Extend Activation Period To 120 Days

Feb 11, 2007

Would you like to extend the activation period to the maximum 120 days instead of the 30 day period that is set by default?  It is possible and legal to do this using the software licensing manager in Windows Vista and Windows 7.  Simply run slmgr -rearm to get another 30 days at an administrative level command prompt.  You can do this a maximum of three times before Microsoft blocks further extensions...

Extenstion Failed Cannot Open File Extend.dat

Nov 25, 2008

So I'm certain this is posted here somewhere, but I can't spend the hours needed to find it...so sorry for probably repeating something. I just purchased a computer with Vista 64 bit, even though I had my reservations about the OS. I then migrated some data from my last laptop and installed my copy of Office 2007 Enterprise. I imported my personal folders into outlook, which seemed fine. I set up my email account and noticed that I could send emails from my outlook (using an internet email account from a work server) but not receive. I also started noticing this error when running outlook: "An extension failed to initialize. Cannot open file: extend.dat. The file may not exist, you may not have permission to open it or it may be open in another program..." I looked around the internet and tried to find a fix for this error. Most places said to find the file and rename it. I have searched every way possible and cannot find the file to rename it. I'm not sure if this is even related to why I cannot receive email.

In addition, when running outlook, I also periodically receive the error "Your AutoCorrect file, MSO1033.acl could not be saved. The file may be read only, or you may not have permission to modify the file." I also get this permission language at the bottom of the previous error message. Upon exiting outlook I get a similar error about not being able to save a file. It then opens a dialog box for me save the file as a macro enabled template...I receive basically the same errors (without the enable.dat error) when running Word. None of the other programs seem affected. This is supposed to be a work PC and if I cannot properly run word and outlook, it will prove quite pointless. I had no problems running this copy of Office on my last computer, which was running XP. I have installed all the windows and office updates, as far as I know.

Extend Activation Period Past 180 Days

Mar 20, 2007

There has been a lot of news about a new technique to extend the activation period of Windows Vista past 180 days.  It all started when Brian Livingston posted a story on his site, WindowsSecrets.com, about a registry key that can be modified to allow the slmgr -rearm command to be run more than three times.  This allows you to use Windows Vista without having to activate it for longer than 180 days.
Activation has always been more of burden for licensed Windows users than an effective deterrent for piracy.  There are already many cracks for Windows Vista that bypass activation completely.   The end result is a bad experience for those that legally buy the product.

For me, this is an issue that I am always fighting with. I am constantly building, installing and re-configuring my two computers with multiple vista virtual machines.  I don't want to deal with the burden of having to activate my legal copies of Windows Vista every time since none of my workstations seem to last for more than a few months before I reinstall.  If I actually activated my Vista Ultimate licenses every time I reinstall I would already have to use the slow phone based system where you have to type in that super long code.  Sorry Microsoft, that is a horrible experience that I'm trying to avoid.

Using Brian's registry key and the old 180 day trick, it is possible to setup Task Scheduler to automate these changes to extend the period before you need to activate beyond 180 days. Follow these steps to automate the registry change and activation reset using Task Scheduler:

Click on the Start Button, type in Task Manager and hit Enter....

IP Address: Manually Changes

May 12, 2009

We have some new Visat pc's added to our network and all of them are showing the same problem. What happens is when the users start the pc's they get a message saying the IP address is in use and they have to go and manually change the address to get working. All the pc's are configured with static ip addresses and have been checked to make sure they are on different addresses. Has anyone got any ideas on what is causing this? I have seen one workaround which involved adding some batch files to the startup routine to swap between static and DHCP but I do not want to go down tis route.

Extend/Shrink Volume Tools To Decrease The Maximum Capacity Of The NTFS Format

If not, how can I achieve this on Vista?

Freezing And Turn Off Manually

My computer (Vista 32 SP2) freezes and I turn it off manually and start again and all is OK for a while. It seems to freeze at any time even when I am not doing anything. This has been happening for 8-9 months but the problem went away in winter so I seem to think this might be the fan. I have done a clean boot and still it happens. I have uninstalled Vista and reinstalled and still the same so it is not any programs that I might have. As summer is not far away (Australia) I would like to fix this problem as it has started to happen again. I have taken the unit to Acer but they seem to think it's OK they said it was a memory conflict but that is not the case. What else can I do?

Shutdown And Power Back Manually?

May 14, 2008

I have a problem since a month before SP1 came out. I never installed the beta. I have Vista Ultimate 64bits all updates done. When i shutdown my computer turn off correctly. Then within 10 to 60 second the computer turn on. First time i thought i hit restart or hibernate by mistake. I never use these 2 usually because hibernate scrap a hardisk and restart never sure memory cleared (i'm a programmer so i play with memory alot) so i prefer shutdown and power back manually.

So i tough next that Wake on Lan was my problem. I check by bios and it's fine it's off. I updated my bios and same result the problem still there. I searched the net without any result. What's weird is if i shutdown my computer and when i saw it power back on i hold right away my power button so it shutdown before windows even think of starting it turn off and never ever power back on by itself..............
