Dec 1, 2008I have a Gateway DX4720-03 Vista-64bit PC. Recently, I noticed something strange. The Screensaver always reverts back to 1 minute after booting up. While booting up, I can quickly check the screensaver settings, and the wait time is what I set before rebooting. After the services start on the PC, the time resets to 1 minute. When I check this in Safe Mode, the wait time stays whatever I set it previously, and does not change. How would you go about determining the bad startup program or service that is resetting the wait time?

Aug 31, 2008I recently went into Change Date & Time Internet time tab and chose a time standard to connect with. After doing that I went onto the internet and connected with time.nist.gov and checked the time. After that I was no longer able to go into the internet time tab. It tells me that time.nist.gov is the time connection and I can't change it. It tells me I need to have permission to do this as administrator. I am the administrator! What goes here?

May 23, 2009My buddy was bringing over some files for me on his laptop hdd running xp. I plugged it into my vista x64 computer via usb and I am having a few issues. The hdd shows up in My Computer and shows stuff in it but when I open it, it says that the folder is empty. I whent to Vistas disk manager and it shows everything is fine with the hdd but for some reason the files just wont show up.

How To Extend Partition?
Sep 10, 2009i had 3 partitions on my HDD. i backed them up and deleted them to make room for a custom partition. when i finished deleting them the disk management said i had 2 unallocated partitions. i checked in disk part and it showed only my "main" vista partition existed. my vista partition is "partition 2" and i was able to extend it into "partition 3" (one of the unallocated partitions) via disk management, but i cant add "partition 1" (also an unallocated partition) to my main partition.

I added a 4th 1TB harddrive, and I am trying to extend the volume to merge with the new space currently available. I can't seem to do that though because "Extend Volume" is greyed out, and I can't figure out what is wrong. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? Attached are screenshots that may help.

How To Delete A Partition And Extend The Volume?
Dec 22, 2007how to delete a partition and extend the volume, and it seems pretty basic. I do have a question though. My C partition is 50GB, and I have a new volume E partition of 100Gb. I also have unallocated space left of 550Gb (750Gb seagate). I think I want to just want to have one big partition. Not sure if it's a good idea, but I was wondering if I need to go ahead and format the unallocated space first, or will I have an option to do it? I did right click on it, and I got an option to make it a simple volume or something similar, but thought I'd wait a bit on that.

The partition is 30GB. Now it says free space. but i cant extend my main partition back to it was. It says it's an extended partition. Do i have to make it primary to extend the c drive? And if so, how would i go about that? It also asked me, when not a drive, if i wanted to delete the partition... Would that make it primary? Event viewer indicates ‘excessive page swapping’ and I tried to extend the swap memory size manually, this did not help either. It does not matter which browser is in use (tries IEXPL en FIREFOX). JAVA runs with the latest edition. Nov 25, 2008So I'm certain this is posted here somewhere, but I can't spend the hours needed to find it...so sorry for probably repeating something. I just purchased a computer with Vista 64 bit, even though I had my reservations about the OS. I then migrated some data from my last laptop and installed my copy of Office 2007 Enterprise. I imported my personal folders into outlook, which seemed fine. I set up my email account and noticed that I could send emails from my outlook (using an internet email account from a work server) but not receive. I also started noticing this error when running outlook: "An extension failed to initialize. Cannot open file: extend.dat. The file may not exist, you may not have permission to open it or it may be open in another program..." I looked around the internet and tried to find a fix for this error. Most places said to find the file and rename it. I have searched every way possible and cannot find the file to rename it. I'm not sure if this is even related to why I cannot receive email.
In addition, when running outlook, I also periodically receive the error "Your AutoCorrect file, MSO1033.acl could not be saved. The file may be read only, or you may not have permission to modify the file." I also get this permission language at the bottom of the previous error message. Upon exiting outlook I get a similar error about not being able to save a file. It then opens a dialog box for me save the file as a macro enabled template...I receive basically the same errors (without the enable.dat error) when running Word. None of the other programs seem affected. This is supposed to be a work PC and if I cannot properly run word and outlook, it will prove quite pointless. I had no problems running this copy of Office on my last computer, which was running XP. I have installed all the windows and office updates, as far as I know.
Extend Activation Period Past 180 Days
Mar 20, 2007There has been a lot of news about a new technique to extend the activation period of Windows Vista past 180 days. It all started when Brian Livingston posted a story on his site, WindowsSecrets.com, about a registry key that can be modified to allow the slmgr -rearm command to be run more than three times. This allows you to use Windows Vista without having to activate it for longer than 180 days.
Activation has always been more of burden for licensed Windows users than an effective deterrent for piracy. There are already many cracks for Windows Vista that bypass activation completely.  The end result is a bad experience for those that legally buy the product.Â
For me, this is an issue that I am always fighting with. I am constantly building, installing and re-configuring my two computers with multiple vista virtual machines. I don't want to deal with the burden of having to activate my legal copies of Windows Vista every time since none of my workstations seem to last for more than a few months before I reinstall. If I actually activated my Vista Ultimate licenses every time I reinstall I would already have to use the slow phone based system where you have to type in that super long code. Sorry Microsoft, that is a horrible experience that I'm trying to avoid. Â
Using Brian's registry key and the old 180 day trick, it is possible to setup Task Scheduler to automate these changes to extend the period before you need to activate beyond 180 days. Follow these steps to automate the registry change and activation reset using Task Scheduler:
Click on the Start Button, type in Task Manager and hit Enter....
Extend C: Partition Drive, NTFS System Boot
May 2, 2010I am runnig out of space in the C drive, but have plenty of space in D drive. How do I allocate more space from the D drive to the C drive? As you can see I have no memory in C:. What can I do to increase it? Do not want to purchase additional programs, not enough space to install them.

Mar 23, 2008I've got an Sony VGN-BX197XP laptop that I've upgraded to Windows Vista Ultimate. Since then I've encountered some strange display-related issues:
1) I could only boot into Aero about 50% of the time. The rest of the time I forced onto the Standard theme with no Aero option. Since installing Vista SP1 I can't get Aero at all.
2) When not running in Aero mode I can't get the Windows Media Player to play video files, nor get a Perfomance Index.
3) If I plug in an external monitor I can't get a picture on the laptop monitor but I *do* get a picture on the external monitor and it runs Aero 100% of the time. It will also play video files and give me a performance index.
X64 Freeze From Time To Time For 2-3 Seconds.
Aug 6, 2008Recently I have bought Vista Home Premium x64 and to be honest I am having quite annoying issue with this OS . I had installed Vista on RAID0 partition. Additionally I have three other sata drives for my data . I noticed that from time to time when I am working on vista , system freeze for 2-3 sec then everything is fine and I can continue work. Particulary when for example I am opening some application or even windows explorer , my computer etc. (when it hangs I can't move my mouse). Moreover when it freeze I "hear" something inside my computer case as if my computer weak up from hibernation.

Aug 20, 2009Im in vista 64 bit. I was trying to install a licence for Cubase and was getting a time, calendar error. I look and everything is on time to the second hand on my wall. But for the hell of it, I tryed syncing it to all the availible servers but got: "An error occured while Windows was synchronizing with whatever.server" However I can ping the servers in comand prompt. And also, like the topic says, It still keeps perfect time. It set it's own time. So Im clueless. A bios thing perhaps?

Oct 14, 2008I am running Vista Home Premium x64 with a Microsoft wireless mouse and keyboard combo. Back in Feb 2008 I downloaded the optional "HID Non-user Input data filter" update and installed it. This fixed my screensaver not working issue. Then, 4 days ago my screensaver stopped working again. In my system I see that the update is still installed. The only thing that changed is I upgraded my Norton Antivirus 2008 to 2009, and installed one of the standard "Automatic Updates" for Microsoft Windows. Does anyone have any clue as to why or how to fix it again?

Jul 17, 2008Got a totally different screensaver problem than found by searching the forum.
I got my screensaver to engage after 15 minutes without any mouse movement.
The thing is, if I am watching a movie, the screensaver will start after the 15 minutes into the movie. Even if I leave a game in the pause mode to get something like food, the screensaver will engage after the 15 minutes. No matter what screensave I use, it still happens.
Why is this happening?

Screensaver Not Starting
Jun 20, 2008I have a Dell Inspiron running Vista. Had no problems until recently when the screensaver started to refuse to work. Even when I go to screen saver settings and select preview the screensaver just comes on for less than a second and goes off again.
I have got a wireless mouse but have always used it, I have tried unplugging it, but to no avail. I have also tried a selective startup with only microsoft programs on startup, but still no joy.

Sep 5, 2009I accidentally deleted some .scr files from the system32 folder and now i can't install any screen savers nor use the ones i didn't delete. (it just shows "none" on the change screens saver menu). I remember deleting a small (5kb or so) .scr file which i assume caused the problem.

Jul 30, 2008I updated and downloaded the patch and it started to work instantly, But later that same night after running a handful of other applications it stopped working and the screensaver won't start. I can go and preview it but it won't start once I am idle. I know that this is a ridiculus issue but my wife loves to see all our family photos as the screensaver.
