I am using Vista x64 with a 3ware 9650SE raid controller as a redundant raid5 data drive. I added a 4th 1TB harddrive, and I am trying to extend the volume to merge with the new space currently available. I can't seem to do that though because "Extend Volume" is greyed out, and I can't figure out what is wrong. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? Attached are screenshots that may help.
View 6 Replieshow to delete a partition and extend the volume, and it seems pretty basic. I do have a question though. My C partition is 50GB, and I have a new volume E partition of 100Gb. I also have unallocated space left of 550Gb (750Gb seagate). I think I want to just want to have one big partition. Not sure if it's a good idea, but I was wondering if I need to go ahead and format the unallocated space first, or will I have an option to do it? I did right click on it, and I got an option to make it a simple volume or something similar, but thought I'd wait a bit on that.

My question is, can I use the Extend/Shrink Volume tools to decrease the maximum capacity of the NTFS format and therefore increase the maximum capacity of the FAT32 format, as I need more than 32gb. If not, how can I achieve this on Vista?

Using Disk Management I used 'Shrink volume' menu reduce C drive to 180 GB and received 110 GB unallocated space. Now I would like to add that unallocated space to D drive, however "Extend volume' menu on D drive is greyed out.

Also when I right-click on the sound icon and go to 'playback devices' and then go to the recording tab, it freezes (the window) and says "Windows Shell Common dll is not responding. (I don't know if this is related but my iTunes isn't working, I double-click to listen but the little time bar at the top doesn't move at all, but the window does not freeze)
View 9 Replies View Relatedi had 3 partitions on my HDD. i backed them up and deleted them to make room for a custom partition. when i finished deleting them the disk management said i had 2 unallocated partitions. i checked in disk part and it showed only my "main" vista partition existed. my vista partition is "partition 2" and i was able to extend it into "partition 3" (one of the unallocated partitions) via disk management, but i cant add "partition 1" (also an unallocated partition) to my main partition.

My second HDD now shows 289 GB (the unallocated space is 176 GB). I have tried to extend the HDD, so that I get my 500 GB back, but the information is greyed out. I have formatted the HDD, but it changed nothing. I only use it for backups. Is there anything I can do?

The partition is 30GB. Now it says free space. but i cant extend my main partition back to it was. It says it's an extended partition. Do i have to make it primary to extend the c drive? And if so, how would i go about that? It also asked me, when not a drive, if i wanted to delete the partition... Would that make it primary? It says the partition will become inaccesible if you delete it...

I just purchased a computer with Vista 64 bit, even though I had my reservations about the OS. I then migrated some data from my last laptop and installed my copy of Office 2007 Enterprise. I imported my personal folders into outlook, which seemed fine. I set up my email account and noticed that I could send emails from my outlook (using an internet email account from a work server) but not receive. I also started noticing this error when running outlook: "An extension failed to initialize. Cannot open file: extend.dat. The file may not exist, you may not have permission to open it or it may be open in another program..." I looked around the internet and tried to find a fix for this error. Most places said to find the file and rename it. I have searched every way possible and cannot find the file to rename it. I'm not sure if this is even related to why I cannot receive email.
In addition, when running outlook, I also periodically receive the error "Your AutoCorrect file, MSO1033.acl could not be saved. The file may be read only, or you may not have permission to modify the file." I also get this permission language at the bottom of the previous error message. Upon exiting outlook I get a similar error about not being able to save a file. It then opens a dialog box for me save the file as a macro enabled template...I receive basically the same errors (without the enable.dat error) when running Word. None of the other programs seem affected. This is supposed to be a work PC and if I cannot properly run word and outlook, it will prove quite pointless. I had no problems running this copy of Office on my last computer, which was running XP. I have installed all the windows and office updates, as far as I know.
There has been a lot of news about a new technique to extend the activation period of Windows Vista past 180 days. It all started when Brian Livingston posted a story on his site, WindowsSecrets.com, about a registry key that can be modified to allow the slmgr -rearm command to be run more than three times. This allows you to use Windows Vista without having to activate it for longer than 180 days.
Activation has always been more of burden for licensed Windows users than an effective deterrent for piracy. There are already many cracks for Windows Vista that bypass activation completely.  The end result is a bad experience for those that legally buy the product.Â
For me, this is an issue that I am always fighting with. I am constantly building, installing and re-configuring my two computers with multiple vista virtual machines. I don't want to deal with the burden of having to activate my legal copies of Windows Vista every time since none of my workstations seem to last for more than a few months before I reinstall. If I actually activated my Vista Ultimate licenses every time I reinstall I would already have to use the slow phone based system where you have to type in that super long code. Sorry Microsoft, that is a horrible experience that I'm trying to avoid. Using Brian's registry key and the old 180 day trick, it is possible to setup Task Scheduler to automate these changes to extend the period before you need to activate beyond 180 days. Follow these steps to automate the registry change and activation reset using Task Scheduler:
Click on the Start Button, type in Task Manager and hit Enter....
I am runnig out of space in the C drive, but have plenty of space in D drive. How do I allocate more space from the D drive to the C drive? As you can see I have no memory in C:. What can I do to increase it? Do not want to purchase additional programs, not enough space to install them.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently acquired a Dell Studio XPS 435 desktop with Vista Ultimate as the OS. My plan is to upgrade to Windows 7 in the next couple of months or so. Therefore I won't need the Vista recovery partition on the hard drive. I am trying to eliminate it and add to the C: drive partition. Looking at my drive 0 in disk management I have from Right to left a C: partition 683Gb NTFS with the usual Healthy (System, Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition). Directly to the left is the Recovery or D: drive which is 15Gb NTFS marked Healthy (Primary Partition) and finally to the left is the last partition of 71Mb marked Healthy (EISA Configuration). No idea what that is. Right clicking in the Recovery partition gives several options including: format, shrink volume, extend volume, delete volume, mark volume as active, change drive letter and paths, as well as help.
My question is how to remove the recovery partition and then extend the C: partition. My first thought is to format the recovery partition, delete the volume and then right click the C: drive partition and extend it but I really need some advice so I don't screw up the whole disk. For instance I have no idea what if anything hapens to the drive letters.I think maybe what I am calling partitions are really volumes so you can see I am over my head here.

Been thinking about installing a free-standing set of small HP speakers instead. Would that make any difference? Wal-Mart sells a set that support Plug 'n Play for around $20, something I may try since fantastic sound isn't what I'm after. I'd just like to be able to hear the occasional DVD at something above a loud whisper during playback.

Can not increase volume loud enough no matter what the format. Just got Vista pc few days back. Today, had to turn full volume on volume icon in start bar, as well as turn full up in windows media to hear a speech and not really hear good enough, or as would desire. Volume is quite low. (to note this is something I've always listened to with xp.) This is after yesterday realizing same thing on listening to music, is way too low.
Also, in start bar is the volume icon, which has just a single slider, where in xp we had volume and could adjust several things. My wifes laptop ( Vista home premium) has suddenly developed a problem with the sound volume. Every time she boots up,the volume has decreased slightly and then decreases further when she boots again next time.
It has worked OK for nearly one year now but just developed this problem a few days ago following MS updates.
My OS has been very stable (latest patches etc applied, no new software/hardware). When I rightclick on the Sndvol.exe applet in the SysTrack the menu appears. I can choose Playback, Record, etc. but NOT Open Volume Mixer. Nor do I see the slider. When I left click on the Open Volume Mixer it looks like it triggers an Event to the OS, but nothing happens. I have rebooted (warm & cold) and even Restored to an earlier date without success.

I'm wondering if I shrink C: partition size to say 100GB for windows, will I need to reactive Vista? Or will I have to buy a new one? Nothing else in the system is changed. View 5 Replies View RelatedI have Vista home premium installed on my Toshiba Qosmio G35-AV600 laptop. I have two 80GB hard drives with C: setup as a RAID drive. After installing Vista the two drives show up as C: and E: whereas in XP Service Pack 3 they showed up as one spanned volume C: totalling 160GB. This is the way I want it to show up in Vista. My question then is how do I achieve this? My second hard drive was empty so I reformatted drive E: thinking that I would be given the option to create a spanned volume, but it is greyed out.
When I open my Toshiba RAID console, it shows two hard drives but Drive C: or Disk 0 is listed as RAID whereas drive E: or Disk 1 is listed as "JBOD (Not RAID)". I'm at a loss as to how to fix this and was also wondering if it is best to just leave it as it is. What are the advantages/disadvantages of setting up one RAID spanned drive?
