I'll be glad if you could help me. I bought a new PC with a 500Go HD. I installed Vista Home Premium on a partition of 100Go (C. I have therefore another partition for the remaining (D:, 400Go). I'd like to avoid using third party software ; is it possible trough Windows Vista ? I read things on Microsoft website regarding the deletion and creation of partition, but never managed to find out an answer for my particular question.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently acquired a Dell Studio XPS 435 desktop with Vista Ultimate as the OS. My plan is to upgrade to Windows 7 in the next couple of months or so. Therefore I won't need the Vista recovery partition on the hard drive. I am trying to eliminate it and add to the C: drive partition. Looking at my drive 0 in disk management I have from Right to left a C: partition 683Gb NTFS with the usual Healthy (System, Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition). Directly to the left is the Recovery or D: drive which is 15Gb NTFS marked Healthy (Primary Partition) and finally to the left is the last partition of 71Mb marked Healthy (EISA Configuration). No idea what that is. Right clicking in the Recovery partition gives several options including: format, shrink volume, extend volume, delete volume, mark volume as active, change drive letter and paths, as well as help.
My question is how to remove the recovery partition and then extend the C: partition. My first thought is to format the recovery partition, delete the volume and then right click the C: drive partition and extend it but I really need some advice so I don't screw up the whole disk. For instance I have no idea what if anything hapens to the drive letters.I think maybe what I am calling partitions are really volumes so you can see I am over my head here.
i had 3 partitions on my HDD. i backed them up and deleted them to make room for a custom partition. when i finished deleting them the disk management said i had 2 unallocated partitions. i checked in disk part and it showed only my "main" vista partition existed. my vista partition is "partition 2" and i was able to extend it into "partition 3" (one of the unallocated partitions) via disk management, but i cant add "partition 1" (also an unallocated partition) to my main partition.

My C partition is 50GB, and I have a new volume E partition of 100Gb. I also have unallocated space left of 550Gb (750Gb seagate). I think I want to just want to have one big partition. Not sure if it's a good idea, but I was wondering if I need to go ahead and format the unallocated space first, or will I have an option to do it? I did right click on it, and I got an option to make it a simple volume or something similar, but thought I'd wait a bit on that.

The partition is 30GB. Now it says free space. but i cant extend my main partition back to it was. It says it's an extended partition. Do i have to make it primary to extend the c drive? And if so, how would i go about that? It also asked me, when not a drive, if i wanted to delete the partition... Would that make it primary? It says the partition will become inaccesible if you delete it...
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've got a really weird scenario: I've installed Vista on one of my partitions, after a few days it got corrupted, so i've installed another version on a different partition (different disk as well). I've since deleted the first vista installation. Now vista works perfectly on my other partition, no problems. However, when looking at the disk management I can see that the old vista partition's status is:" Healthy (System, Active, Primary Partition)" whereas my working vista partition is: "Healthy (Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)" My vista partition is not a system partition. This causes some problems, as I can't format the old vista partition. Trying to disable the disk at startup and booting with the Vista DVD doesn't help (it recognizes some problem but when rebooting, nothing happens, no loading of anything).Is there a way to assign the 'System' attribute to another partition and/or to remove the 'System' attribute from a partition?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI had to replace my system drive with a newer one because it was first gen SATA and didn't boot every time. Stupidly, I did it in a brutal manner and now I have the current system on C: and an older installation on D: The bizarre thing is that according to Disk Manager, the partition on D is labelled as "System, Active, Primary Partition", while C: is "Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition". This means I am worried about simply using Linux to reformat the D drive in case it kills the working partition on C:. C works perfectly well and there's been no activity on D: since November last year when in a panic I reinstalled Vista onto C:. Is there anything I can do to remove D, reformat the drive and reuse it for something else *without* also destroying my C: partition?

I tried to use the recovery partition and instead of reinstalling my system, it wiped it and then said something to the effect of insert you recovery cd. Well I bought my computer at Best Buy and of course they don't provide the discs with the computer!! Ahhhhh!!!! My computer came with Vista installed and I have a valid CD Key, but no disk now. I have ordered a recovery disk, but it will take up to 8 business days to get here. Does anyone know if you can download an evaluation copy of Vista or any copy of Vista for that mater??? I figure all I need to do is get it installed and I can use my CD Key.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI had a Vista Install with A "System" partition and a "Data" partition. Installing a VPN Package by Sonicwall completely destroyed networking. Under the properties of any network card the only Service, Client, or Protocol was "Client For Microsoft Networks" and clicking "Install" to get IPV4 and the like put on gave an error. DHCP was also broken. Time to start over. Unfortunately, I am going to need a new laptop soon because my laptop turns itself off when in the BIOS Screen, When trying to boot from CD, or any time before Windows starts to load. It is stable once it gets up and running. Because of this, I could not boot from a CD to install Vista...I had to boot to my damaged installation and install it to my old Data Drive (After backing everything up). Now, it boots to a clean install of Vista. This install is on the "F" drive. The old install resides on the "C" drive. By default, it boots to the proper installation (without me having modified any boot information.)
I would like to recover the space taken up by the old "C Drive" installation but I am not sure if the bootloader actually resides on that partition yet. I would be rather unhappy if I blew away that partition and ended up unable to boot. So....am I safe to blow away the C partition? Is there any way I can check to make sure that the installation on the F drive is handling the boot loading?
Severl weeks ago, I got a warning that there was no more space on C:,my system partition. Properties showed 0 free space. I tracked down the problem to a file named mnc82DB.tmp, which was about 50GB. It was in the folder usersownerappdatalocal emp. I have no idea where it came from and Google has no entries if I search on that file name.
Trying to delete it fails, saying that it is open in another program.
It's very annoying sice if I try to print something I will lose if I reboot, it won't do
it (0 free space). Another weirdness is that if I try to type something into the Firefox Goggle engine, the letters are entered in reverse order.
i just install vista x64 on RAID 0 (2 X 250 Gb) volume. Volume space is 465 GB (instead of 500 GB! that?s alright), free space 451 GB, so it took 14GB on OS and Page File. Now i want to partition it and want to allocate about 100GB for system drive i think which is more then enough.::
::But the problem is, on Disk Management when i select the volume and click shrink Volume i get followings::

::so i can't shrink the volume less then 241337. that means it forcing me to keep the system drive about 235.68 GB! which is about the size of one of the hard drive (232.8 GB). So... what is going on? why its forcing me to keep the volume that large??::
Before you flame the thread saying partitioning capabilities are already included in x64, they are bad and limited. I cannot expand my system partition even with unallocated space on the drive sitting there unused. For example, i have a 750gb sata system drive which is partitioned into 3 spaces, my system partitionn, my media partition and unallocated space partition, i wanted to add this 100gb of unallocated space to my system partition so that it will have some headroom and space for further programs if need be. However vista ultimate's disk management does not allow this like partition magic used to. Of course partition magic is not compatible with vista[hurray] so i need compatible software to do so

I want to install XP in a multi boot configuration but get stuck in Disk Management and am unable to proceed from there. I'd like to keep Vista on my laptop, but if it comes down to it I'll need to take it off and put on XP because our work computers run with XP and we do a lot of work on reports and presentations from home and network from home. I can't find the New Partition Wizard to make a space for XP.

I added a 4th 1TB harddrive, and I am trying to extend the volume to merge with the new space currently available. I can't seem to do that though because "Extend Volume" is greyed out, and I can't figure out what is wrong. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? Attached are screenshots that may help.

My second HDD now shows 289 GB (the unallocated space is 176 GB). I have tried to extend the HDD, so that I get my 500 GB back, but the information is greyed out. I have formatted the HDD, but it changed nothing. I only use it for backups. Is there anything I can do?

Event viewer indicates ‘excessive page swapping’ and I tried to extend the swap memory size manually, this did not help either. It does not matter which browser is in use (tries IEXPL en FIREFOX). JAVA runs with the latest edition. View 5 Replies View RelatedSo I'm certain this is posted here somewhere, but I can't spend the hours needed to find it...so sorry for probably repeating something. I just purchased a computer with Vista 64 bit, even though I had my reservations about the OS. I then migrated some data from my last laptop and installed my copy of Office 2007 Enterprise. I imported my personal folders into outlook, which seemed fine. I set up my email account and noticed that I could send emails from my outlook (using an internet email account from a work server) but not receive. I also started noticing this error when running outlook: "An extension failed to initialize. Cannot open file: extend.dat. The file may not exist, you may not have permission to open it or it may be open in another program..." I looked around the internet and tried to find a fix for this error. Most places said to find the file and rename it. I have searched every way possible and cannot find the file to rename it. I'm not sure if this is even related to why I cannot receive email.
In addition, when running outlook, I also periodically receive the error "Your AutoCorrect file, MSO1033.acl could not be saved. The file may be read only, or you may not have permission to modify the file." I also get this permission language at the bottom of the previous error message. Upon exiting outlook I get a similar error about not being able to save a file. It then opens a dialog box for me save the file as a macro enabled template...I receive basically the same errors (without the enable.dat error) when running Word. None of the other programs seem affected. This is supposed to be a work PC and if I cannot properly run word and outlook, it will prove quite pointless. I had no problems running this copy of Office on my last computer, which was running XP. I have installed all the windows and office updates, as far as I know.
There has been a lot of news about a new technique to extend the activation period of Windows Vista past 180 days. It all started when Brian Livingston posted a story on his site, WindowsSecrets.com, about a registry key that can be modified to allow the slmgr -rearm command to be run more than three times. This allows you to use Windows Vista without having to activate it for longer than 180 days.
Activation has always been more of burden for licensed Windows users than an effective deterrent for piracy. There are already many cracks for Windows Vista that bypass activation completely.  The end result is a bad experience for those that legally buy the product.Â
For me, this is an issue that I am always fighting with. I am constantly building, installing and re-configuring my two computers with multiple vista virtual machines. I don't want to deal with the burden of having to activate my legal copies of Windows Vista every time since none of my workstations seem to last for more than a few months before I reinstall. If I actually activated my Vista Ultimate licenses every time I reinstall I would already have to use the slow phone based system where you have to type in that super long code. Sorry Microsoft, that is a horrible experience that I'm trying to avoid. Â
Using Brian's registry key and the old 180 day trick, it is possible to setup Task Scheduler to automate these changes to extend the period before you need to activate beyond 180 days. Follow these steps to automate the registry change and activation reset using Task Scheduler:
Click on the Start Button, type in Task Manager and hit Enter....

My question is, can I use the Extend/Shrink Volume tools to decrease the maximum capacity of the NTFS format and therefore increase the maximum capacity of the FAT32 format, as I need more than 32gb. View 4 Replies View RelatedI think I messed up my hard drive while trying to erase the EISA partition on it. It's a Gateway P7811-FX laptop with a single 200 GB hard drive. Before, I only had 1 main partition: the C: Drive (176.31 GB), along with the hidden 10 GB EISA partition. Following that, I went in Disk Management. The hidden partition showed up, but I couldn't extend the C drive to use the unallocated 10 GB, so I converted it to a simple 10 GB volume. Then I used Acronis Disk Director Suite and merged the two partitions. And now, I can't do anything in Disk Management. There's only one partition now (186.31 GB), but when I right click on it, there's no options to create, shrink, delete, or extend the partition. They were there before, but the only option that shows up is Help.
Under Status, it says Healthy (Active, EISA Configuration). I think I merged the partitions the wrong way, so now there's no "System, Boot, Page File..." partition. Everything is on the EISA partition. When I try to run Acronis, the program doesn't load up. I've tried using Diskpart but I can't create any new partitions either.
I've got a Hp computer that has Vista Home Premium 64 bit on it and I want to remove the partition D which is the recovery partition. I have factory backup dvd's, made my own backup dvd's and have a True Image of the drive with both partitions, so I think I'm covered. Anyone know how to go about removing the complete partition?

I'm looking for a Free Partition program to partition my external hard drive into at least 2 partitions. Does anyone know of such a program that's straight forward without all the bells and whistles? Also, would I set the partitions as Logical or Primary? Currently the drive is a Primary but if I partition it into 2 partitions what should they be?
My C: drive is 1Tb in size (931.43Gb), with Used Space of 73.8Gb and Free Space of 857.65Gb. I want to shrink the C: partition down to 200Gb, and use this just for my OS and App files - I'm running Vista Ultimate 64 bit. This would then leave me with a new partition of c. 750Gb for my data files and documents etc. However, Vista will only offer to shrink the C: partition by around 260Gb as a maximum. It will not allow me to select a larger size than this. I've tried turning off System Restore / Shadow Copies, but this makes no difference. Any ideas why this should be, and what can I do? p.s. I've tried using Acronis Disk Director as well, but whilst I can select a new C: partition size of 200Gb, when the system reboots, nothing has changed, so ADD won't work either.

Using Disk Management I used 'Shrink volume' menu reduce C drive to 180 GB and received 110 GB unallocated space. Now I would like to add that unallocated space to D drive, however "Extend volume' menu on D drive is greyed out.
