Lost Volume Control Icon

Mar 23, 2008

I lost the volume control icon in the notification area. When I go to properties for the notification area the volume check box is grayed out. I've also looked in the Creative software but there is no option that I can find for the volume control icon. Any ideas on how to get it back?

Change The Volume From The Taskbar, A Window Pops Up Saying "Volume Control Applet Is Not Responding"

Apr 13, 2009

No sound: it's just not working, and whenever I try to change the volume from the taskbar, a window pops up saying "Volume Control Applet is not responding". Also when I right-click on the sound icon and go to 'playback devices' and then go to the recording tab, it freezes (the window) and says "Windows Shell Common dll is not responding. (I don't know if this is related but my iTunes isn't working, I double-click to listen but the little time bar at the top doesn't move at all, but the window does not freeze)

Very Low Volume

Jun 26, 2008

Our new 20" HP Monitor (w2007) has built-in speakers situated on the back of the case. I've already set the audio output control to a full 100 on the taskbar. Been thinking about installing a free-standing set of small HP speakers instead. Would that make any difference? Wal-Mart sells a set that support Plug 'n Play for around $20, something I may try since fantastic sound isn't what I'm after. I'd just like to be able to hear the occasional DVD at something above a loud whisper during playback.

Volume Too Low In VISTA

Jul 7, 2008

The audio volume on vista is too low. How can I increase the volume on Windows Vista. It doesn't matter what device (medium) using. Can not increase volume loud enough no matter what the format. Just got Vista pc few days back. Today, had to turn full volume on volume icon in start bar, as well as turn full up in windows media to hear a speech and not really hear good enough, or as would desire. Volume is quite low. (to note this is something I've always listened to with xp.) This is after yesterday realizing same thing on listening to music, is way too low.

Also, in start bar is the volume icon, which has just a single slider, where in xp we had volume and could adjust several things. Is there any way to get the full capability volume icon which gave us some 5 controls? Main question though, how do I increase volume on windows vista (home premium sp1?)

Cannot Extend Volume

Oct 9, 2009

I am using Vista x64 with a 3ware 9650SE raid controller as a redundant raid5 data drive. I added a 4th 1TB harddrive, and I am trying to extend the volume to merge with the new space currently available. I can't seem to do that though because "Extend Volume" is greyed out, and I can't figure out what is wrong. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? Attached are screenshots that may help.

Volume ACL On, API CreateFile

Mar 5, 2009

I wrote a small program using QueryDosDevice(...) API to get the volume name associated to an unit name (A:, B:, C: etc.). I, then, use CreateFile(...) and SetSecurityInfo(...) to modifie the DACL of the volume, so that I can allow or deny users or groups to acces to the Unit. This is done dynamicaly by a service detecting the unit arrival.

To be clear, the same thing can be done with:

SetNamedSecurityInfo ("\\.\A:",
SE_FILE_OBJECT,
DACL_SECURITY_INFORMATION|PROTECTED_DACL_SECURITY_INFORMATION,
NULL,
NULL,
paclNew,
NULL);

"\.A:" allow to open a volume and not the root of the unit as documented in API CreateFile(...)................

NOT Opening Volume Mixer

Mar 23, 2008

My OS has been very stable (latest patches etc applied, no new software/hardware). When I rightclick on the Sndvol.exe applet in the SysTrack the menu appears. I can choose Playback, Record, etc. but NOT Open Volume Mixer. Nor do I see the slider. When I left click on the Open Volume Mixer it looks like it triggers an Event to the OS, but nothing happens. I have rebooted (warm & cold) and even Restored to an earlier date without success.

X64 OEM Shrinking Volume: Reactivation?

Jun 13, 2009

I have Vista x64 OEM on my pc since November 2007. My system has four 500GB hard disks, with C: containing nothing but windows. I'm wondering if I shrink C: partition size to say 100GB for windows, will I need to reactive Vista? Or will I have to buy a new one? Nothing else in the system is changed. (incidentally, might be upgrading graphics card soon, will that too cause a reactivation?)

Setting Up A Spanned Volume

Jun 23, 2008

I have Vista home premium installed on my Toshiba Qosmio G35-AV600 laptop. I have two 80GB hard drives with C: setup as a RAID drive. After installing Vista the two drives show up as C: and E: whereas in XP Service Pack 3 they showed up as one spanned volume C: totalling 160GB. This is the way I want it to show up in Vista. My question then is how do I achieve this? My second hard drive was empty so I reformatted drive E: thinking that I would be given the option to create a spanned volume, but it is greyed out.

When I open my Toshiba RAID console, it shows two hard drives but Drive C: or Disk 0 is listed as RAID whereas drive E: or Disk 1 is listed as "JBOD (Not RAID)". I'm at a loss as to how to fix this and was also wondering if it is best to just leave it as it is. What are the advantages/disadvantages of setting up one RAID spanned drive?

Get Rid Of System Volume Information

Feb 6, 2009

This was posted on Vista.general.discussion for a couple of days ago. I have an old system disk with XP which I moved to the E-drive when I installed Vista on a new disk. Everything of the OS on the old XP disk is deleted with the exception of this System Volume Information. I?ve taken the ownership and is now allowed to look into the folder. But no way of deleating it. No usable answer was given to the question other than moving my files to the C disk while formatting E. that might be the end solution. But does anybody know of a trick with or without editing the registry.

How To Recover Pc Full Volume

Last year I made a partition to install XP (which took 20GB) on my pc which came with Vista Home Premium, as I'm running low in my main partition I search "how to delete partition" and followed this: Open Command Prompt. Type: diskpart At the DISKPART prompt, type:list disk Make note of the disk number of the disk from which you want to delete the partition. At the DISKPART prompt, type:select diskn Select the disk n from which you want to delete the partition. HUGE System Volume Information

Jun 12, 2008

I have a 198 GB HDD that has only ~3GB of space left. I cannot delete
any more data, i already did disk cleanup and deleted any non-critical
files. I did a disk analazyz and found that the system volume
information folder is taking up an enormous 89 GB of space that's almost
as large as the files I put on there (107GB). This is my server machine
(wndows server 2008) so there is not any system restore to reduce. Is
there anyway to safely reduce the space that this takes up.

A quick peak into the file tree shows that just one file takes up over
67 GB of space.

I'm also using Bitlocker on this and all drives.

Windows Volume Doesnt Higher Than 50

Jan 10, 2009

I'm having some problem with my audio. I have 2 regular speakers. I just bought a new computer (Vista Home Premium installed) and using the same 2 speakers that I had on XP.

Default setting is at 2.1. (I understand that means you have 3 speakers but I only have 2) and there's no setting for "Stereo". And the problem is that the audio doesn't go higher than 50 and the volume is VERY low. I tried so many different forums and couldn't find any results.

The Volume Does Not Contain A Recognized File System

Jun 12, 2009

I am running Vista Ultimate running under VMWare 2.0.2 on a MacPro 10.5.7. I had to recover my c: drive due to some VMWare corruption issues. We can now see the drive, but when I try to boot from it I get "Missing Operating System". If I boot from the Vista Ultimate CD to do a repair, it does not see the OS and so won't do a repair.

Running a command prompt chkdsk c: says "The type of the file system is RAW" and it fails. dir c: gtives "The volume does not contain a recognized file system". Diskpart list partition shows "Partition 1 Primary 40 GB 1024 KB". Filesystem shows "UDF Allocation Unit size 2048". I tried booting from the Norton SystemWorks CD for their disk utility, but evidently the CD is not bootable.
