I hope this is the correct group. I did a search and could not find what I was looking for. I used to be able to adjust the volume on my laptop speakers with the FN and up/down arrows, but now I can't. I tried to figure out how to configure the
buttons, but I don't want to screw anything else up.
While reading news etc. the keys up, down, & arrow keys keep timing out. I have to left click to activate again to page down etc. I have a laptop with Vista?
View 5 Replies View RelatedOn my x64 box, TFS power tools was conflicting with Office Communicator. So I blocked Office Communictor from the startup sequence. As I expected, at startup I would get a message "Blocked startup programs" with the option to "run blocked program" if I want to launch Office Communicator explicitly. Good.
Then I uninstalled TFS power tools, and decided to unblock Office Communicator, so it can run at startup again. Unfortunately, the Office Communicator app shows as "Permitted," but is still being blocked at startup.
In other words, I can't unblock Office Communicator. Vista says it is "permitted", but it is not permitted at startup. I tried disabling and re-enabling it, to see if it would clear up, but no good.
How do I force it to be unblocked so that it will run at startup?
I detest those shortcut arrows that get put on all the desktop icons. I used Tweak UI in XP to get rid of them but can't find anything that works in Vista. I tried Frameworkx that did absolutely nothing.
View 9 Replies View RelatedNo sound: it's just not working, and whenever I try to change the volume from the taskbar, a window pops up saying "Volume Control Applet is not responding". Also when I right-click on the sound icon and go to 'playback devices' and then go to the recording tab, it freezes (the window) and says "Windows Shell Common dll is not responding. (I don't know if this is related but my iTunes isn't working, I double-click to listen but the little time bar at the top doesn't move at all, but the window does not freeze)

After a bit of googling, I've found out that a utility called 'Vista Shortcut Manager' can be used to remove those arrows without any manual registry editing. Thing is I can find only the x86 version of the software but I'm using the Vista x64.

View 6 Replies View RelatedThe Windows Experience Index was 2.0, held down because of "memory operations per second." So I just added two 1 GB memory modules. Now the score for Memory is 4.6 (yay!). But the score for "Graphics" is still 2.4. I went to "adjust visual effects" and clicked "adjust for best performance." And so my screen looks ifferent now--I gather this is "Classic Windows," as opposed to "Aero." But the score is still the same: 2.4! What do I have to do to make it go higher?

I recently reinstalled Vista home premium. Now the colors on my monitor (acer al2216w)appear washed out. I downloaded the drivers for my onboard video and still it appears washed out. Could something else affect the color?

View 6 Replies View RelatedMy Windows Vista isn't letting me adjust my power settings. Here is what the problem:
1. I click the battery icon in the bottom right of the start bar. Then I lick "More Power Options"
2. On the left panel of Power Options window, I click "Choose when to turn off the display" My computer tells me "Your power plan information isn't available" with a red X next to it. The same thing happens when I try to adjust any other power setting as well.
3. I click on the "Why can't Windows retrieve this information?" and it says stuff about my system administrator making changes, and that doesn't apply to me. I am the only user of the computer and my account is the administrator. I've never tinkered with any of these files to my memory................
Taskbar thumbnail preview in Windows Vista is a great new feature that allows you to quickly see a window without having to fully open it from the taskbar. Instead, you can just hover your mouse over the taskbar item and a small preview window will be displayed.
I have been asked many times if it is possible customize the size of the preview thumbnails. Many have expressed the desire to have larger previews so they can better see the window. Finally, I have found a way....
My problem is how to adjust the contrast in vista home by the way the brightness is fine and working..

I have accessed the mixer and tried to make it tollerable, but have failed. There is no direct bass and treble adjustment, and there is not a "user" or "custom" setting. There are only presets, the problems with these presets, is that they work in certain situations, but not in others. Any advise? Am I looking in the worng place? Can I put software in place to adjust the levels indepent of each other? I am using the onboard sound card on an Abit IP35 Pro, and I am using Home Premium 64.

View 5 Replies View RelatedOur new 20" HP Monitor (w2007) has built-in speakers situated on the back of the case. I've already set the audio output control to a full 100 on the taskbar. Been thinking about installing a free-standing set of small HP speakers instead. Would that make any difference? Wal-Mart sells a set that support Plug 'n Play for around $20, something I may try since fantastic sound isn't what I'm after. I'd just like to be able to hear the occasional DVD at something above a loud whisper during playback.

View 9 Replies View RelatedThe audio volume on vista is too low. How can I increase the volume on Windows Vista. It doesn't matter what device (medium) using. Can not increase volume loud enough no matter what the format. Just got Vista pc few days back. Today, had to turn full volume on volume icon in start bar, as well as turn full up in windows media to hear a speech and not really hear good enough, or as would desire. Volume is quite low. (to note this is something I've always listened to with xp.) This is after yesterday realizing same thing on listening to music, is way too low.
Also, in start bar is the volume icon, which has just a single slider, where in xp we had volume and could adjust several things. Is there any way to get the full capability volume icon which gave us some 5 controls? Main question though, how do I increase volume on windows vista (home premium sp1?)
I've recently followed how to extend my Vista disk space using the Computer Management tool. But unfortunately, the Extend Volume is greyed out and is N/A. I also tried Paragon disk tool and it said "Not available in Vista 64-bit, use Recovery CD".

View 7 Replies View RelatedI am using Vista x64 with a 3ware 9650SE raid controller as a redundant raid5 data drive. I added a 4th 1TB harddrive, and I am trying to extend the volume to merge with the new space currently available. I can't seem to do that though because "Extend Volume" is greyed out, and I can't figure out what is wrong. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? Attached are screenshots that may help.
