Sound Volume Decreases.
Feb 14, 2010
My wifes laptop ( Vista home premium) has suddenly developed a problem with the sound volume. Every time she boots up,the volume has decreased slightly and then decreases further when she boots again next time.
It has worked OK for nearly one year now but just developed this problem a few days ago following MS updates.

Today I noticed that the little volume meter next to each device under "Recording Devices" (Right-click your little speaker in the task bar and select Recording Devices) has disappeared. I know it disappeared either today or yesterday. I haven't done anything that could have messed with it. Do you guys know how I can get it back?

A week back, while vista was installing a few updates on my laptop (Sony Vaio VGN-NS130E / Vista Home Premium 32-bit with SP1 running on Intel GL40 Chipset ), I happened to close the laptop by accident. Next time I logged in I saw that the update had failed (obvious.). Soon after I realized that there was no sound from my speakers, but I can still hear very feeble volume through the right channel of my headphones. These are the steps that I have done in an attempt to fix my problem (in the same order as I did it)
1. Rolled my system back to the immediately previous System Restore point (one created when the system was fine and these updates were not installed.) - No luck!
2. Checked, if my speakers were set to default. - They were.
3. Tried recording using Sound Recorder - the file plays fine on other machine, plays on mine but with no sound.
4. Reloaded the driver for the inbuilt sound card. (Realtek High Definition Audio)
5. Installed the latest Chipset Drivers for my motherboard.
6. Checked for the latest audio driver for my laptop model from Sony , installed it. - No luck!
7. Used 'Microsoft Fix It.................

When adjusting my volume by clicking the speaker in the tray it used to give me a sample ding after I moved the slider and let go of it. Now it's silent.
It had me thinking I had a no audio problem until I played a music file.
I went into sounds and looked for a reference to the conmand to see if there was no sound assigned but cannot figure it out.

No sound: it's just not working, and whenever I try to change the volume from the taskbar, a window pops up saying "Volume Control Applet is not responding". Also when I right-click on the sound icon and go to 'playback devices' and then go to the recording tab, it freezes (the window) and says "Windows Shell Common dll is not responding. (I don't know if this is related but my iTunes isn't working, I double-click to listen but the little time bar at the top doesn't move at all, but the window does not freeze)

This worked for me before but I messed it up. I used to be able to record the sound coming from my computer and play it to my microphone right away as it goes. Meaning when I record something, it would record whatever is playing on the computer. But I forgot how to make that setting.

I just upgraded to Vista U x64 and am having sound problems. I have a prelude x-fi sound card but the sound coming out of it is extremely low. I have maxed out every thing I can max (control panel sound, creative panel) and the sound level is whisper quiet. I have also upgraded all my drivers except the prelude's, I would but their website isn't offering those drivers at the moment. But the drivers supplied with the card are vista certified so I should get something. But my mobo, etc is all updated. I have been searching for a solution for two days to no avail.

Our new 20" HP Monitor (w2007) has built-in speakers situated on the back of the case. I've already set the audio output control to a full 100 on the taskbar. Been thinking about installing a free-standing set of small HP speakers instead. Would that make any difference? Wal-Mart sells a set that support Plug 'n Play for around $20, something I may try since fantastic sound isn't what I'm after. I'd just like to be able to hear the occasional DVD at something above a loud whisper during playback.

The audio volume on vista is too low. How can I increase the volume on Windows Vista. It doesn't matter what device (medium) using. Can not increase volume loud enough no matter what the format. Just got Vista pc few days back. Today, had to turn full volume on volume icon in start bar, as well as turn full up in windows media to hear a speech and not really hear good enough, or as would desire. Volume is quite low. (to note this is something I've always listened to with xp.) This is after yesterday realizing same thing on listening to music, is way too low.
Also, in start bar is the volume icon, which has just a single slider, where in xp we had volume and could adjust several things. Is there any way to get the full capability volume icon which gave us some 5 controls? Main question though, how do I increase volume on windows vista (home premium sp1?)

I am using Vista x64 with a 3ware 9650SE raid controller as a redundant raid5 data drive. I added a 4th 1TB harddrive, and I am trying to extend the volume to merge with the new space currently available. I can't seem to do that though because "Extend Volume" is greyed out, and I can't figure out what is wrong. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? Attached are screenshots that may help.

I wrote a small program using QueryDosDevice(...) API to get the volume name associated to an unit name (A:, B:, C: etc.). I, then, use CreateFile(...) and SetSecurityInfo(...) to modifie the DACL of the volume, so that I can allow or deny users or groups to acces to the Unit. This is done dynamicaly by a service detecting the unit arrival.
To be clear, the same thing can be done with:
SetNamedSecurityInfo ("\\.\A:",
SE_FILE_OBJECT,
DACL_SECURITY_INFORMATION|PROTECTED_DACL_SECURITY_INFORMATION,
NULL,
NULL,
paclNew,
NULL);
"\.A:" allow to open a volume and not the root of the unit as documented in API CreateFile(...)................

My OS has been very stable (latest patches etc applied, no new software/hardware). When I rightclick on the Sndvol.exe applet in the SysTrack the menu appears. I can choose Playback, Record, etc. but NOT Open Volume Mixer. Nor do I see the slider. When I left click on the Open Volume Mixer it looks like it triggers an Event to the OS, but nothing happens. I have rebooted (warm & cold) and even Restored to an earlier date without success.

I have Vista x64 OEM on my pc since November 2007. My system has four 500GB hard disks, with C: containing nothing but windows. I'm wondering if I shrink C: partition size to say 100GB for windows, will I need to reactive Vista? Or will I have to buy a new one? Nothing else in the system is changed. (incidentally, might be upgrading graphics card soon, will that too cause a reactivation?)

I have Vista home premium installed on my Toshiba Qosmio G35-AV600 laptop. I have two 80GB hard drives with C: setup as a RAID drive. After installing Vista the two drives show up as C: and E: whereas in XP Service Pack 3 they showed up as one spanned volume C: totalling 160GB. This is the way I want it to show up in Vista. My question then is how do I achieve this? My second hard drive was empty so I reformatted drive E: thinking that I would be given the option to create a spanned volume, but it is greyed out.
When I open my Toshiba RAID console, it shows two hard drives but Drive C: or Disk 0 is listed as RAID whereas drive E: or Disk 1 is listed as "JBOD (Not RAID)". I'm at a loss as to how to fix this and was also wondering if it is best to just leave it as it is. What are the advantages/disadvantages of setting up one RAID spanned drive?

This was posted on Vista.general.discussion for a couple of days ago. I have an old system disk with XP which I moved to the E-drive when I installed Vista on a new disk. Everything of the OS on the old XP disk is deleted with the exception of this System Volume Information. I?ve taken the ownership and is now allowed to look into the folder. But no way of deleating it. No usable answer was given to the question other than moving my files to the C disk while formatting E. that might be the end solution. But does anybody know of a trick with or without editing the registry.
