When adjusting my volume by clicking the speaker in the tray it used to give me a sample ding after I moved the slider and let go of it. Now it's silent.
It had me thinking I had a no audio problem until I played a music file.
I went into sounds and looked for a reference to the conmand to see if there was no sound assigned but cannot figure it out.
the Volume Icon was gone from my system tray. Does anybody know of a way to get it back?

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy wifes laptop ( Vista home premium) has suddenly developed a problem with the sound volume. Every time she boots up,the volume has decreased slightly and then decreases further when she boots again next time.
It has worked OK for nearly one year now but just developed this problem a few days ago following MS updates.
Today I noticed that the little volume meter next to each device under "Recording Devices" (Right-click your little speaker in the task bar and select Recording Devices) has disappeared. I know it disappeared either today or yesterday. I haven't done anything that could have messed with it. Do you guys know how I can get it back?
View 5 Replies View RelatedA week back, while vista was installing a few updates on my laptop (Sony Vaio VGN-NS130E / Vista Home Premium 32-bit with SP1 running on Intel GL40 Chipset ), I happened to close the laptop by accident. Next time I logged in I saw that the update had failed (obvious.). Soon after I realized that there was no sound from my speakers, but I can still hear very feeble volume through the right channel of my headphones. These are the steps that I have done in an attempt to fix my problem (in the same order as I did it)
1. Rolled my system back to the immediately previous System Restore point (one created when the system was fine and these updates were not installed.) - No luck!
2. Checked, if my speakers were set to default. - They were.
3. Tried recording using Sound Recorder - the file plays fine on other machine, plays on mine but with no sound.
4. Reloaded the driver for the inbuilt sound card. (Realtek High Definition Audio)
5. Installed the latest Chipset Drivers for my motherboard.
6. Checked for the latest audio driver for my laptop model from Sony , installed it. - No luck!
7. Used 'Microsoft Fix It.................
In my pc, I have 8 GB ram, Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R mobo and Vista ultimate 64 bit OS.some one will guide me that how can I record internet streaming sound (songs) in MP3 format? I have downloaded Fee MP3 recorder in which there is tab "Record From". when I press this tab I get only " Master Volume" instead of Streo Mix which I used to get in my previous pc with XP OS.When I press this Master volume , no sound coming from PC get recorded.

Today I switched on Windows Defender(for the first time)and ran a quick scan which was fine, but I've noticed a new icon in the systems tray with a green circle and a tick in it.When I hover the pointer over it, it says "Safely Remove Hardware".I've looked everywhere for an explanation but can't find any info anywhere. I can easily get it dead stable at 3.2 GHz, with the RAM running at 1066 (rated specs) and manually adjusting the timings to 5-5-5-18, also spec. But if i start going any higher the system starts getting quirky - particularly when I resume from standby - it goes south with a BSOD. Gunter, I know you wanted pics, but let's keep it all consolidated in here and start keep it to a relative few people.

When I play a WMA file, adjusting any of the video settings slider controls has no affect on the quality of the video playing, not even if I adjust the settings before clicking 'Play'. When I play mpg files, however, adjusting the settings DOES result in the video quality being changed corresponding to the whichever setting is changed. What I can I do to solve this problem when playing WMA files? Is there some setting I need to amend or do I need to download a file/codec?
View 5 Replies View Relatedi've been trying the windows 7 (x32/x64) and other flavours of vista (x32/x64) for the last 6 months while gaming at HD res all the time and there was never an issue. So the problem is that anytime i open up windows task manager or any other adjustable window and i try adjusting the window(includes maximising and minimising) the Cpu usuage just bursts up to roughly 45%. Like in many previous threads i'm already familiar with the red line showing kernel times in task manager and i did notice that 3/4 of the cpu usage bar (when it rises is red: meaning more kernel usage). Also i hear a funny noise near the cpu area. It is definitely the CPU. For some it might be that i'm too fussy or something but this did catch my attention specially while playing games like Racedriver GRID for example where it started to run slower specially at HD resolutions when it wasn't few months ago.
Here's what i've been trying:
1)I've re-installed windows(tried XP Pro x32,Vista Ultimate x32/64, 7 x32/64) and after each installation even before installing any drivers whatso ever the problem was there by going to task manager and trying the thing(ie holding corner of task manager and scrolling and seeing cpu/kernel usage go upto 40 % for nothing)
2)Reformatted and doing the above.
3) Used another power supply in case mine went wrong or something( Used HIPERPOWER | Type M | HPU-4M880)
4)Took all hardware out one by one in order of less importance and booting up to see if problem was still there. (took out DVD DRIVE since there were threads reporting it as the culprit, did also remove sound card etc..)...........
No sound: it's just not working, and whenever I try to change the volume from the taskbar, a window pops up saying "Volume Control Applet is not responding". Also when I right-click on the sound icon and go to 'playback devices' and then go to the recording tab, it freezes (the window) and says "Windows Shell Common dll is not responding. (I don't know if this is related but my iTunes isn't working, I double-click to listen but the little time bar at the top doesn't move at all, but the window does not freeze)

Meaning when I record something, it would record whatever is playing on the computer. But I forgot how to make that setting.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded to Vista U x64 and am having sound problems. I have a prelude x-fi sound card but the sound coming out of it is extremely low. I have maxed out every thing I can max (control panel sound, creative panel) and the sound level is whisper quiet. I have also upgraded all my drivers except the prelude's, I would but their website isn't offering those drivers at the moment. But the drivers supplied with the card are vista certified so I should get something. But my mobo, etc is all updated. I have been searching for a solution for two days to no avail.
View 8 Replies View RelatedMy CD Tray is now opening and closing every 2 min. If i put in a disk, such as a game disk, and start the game, the tray will stop opening and closing. Once I stop the game, the tray starts opening and closing again.
auto execute does not work when I put a disk in.
I have run Norton 360, it shows no vurus or spyware.
I've run across a couple of applications (Avira Premium Security Suite, Spyware Terminator) that, despite choosing the "Always Hide" option for their tray icon, every time the computer reboots, they default back to "Hide When Inactive." Sure, it's a minor issue to set them back to "Always Hide" when I reboot, but is there some sort of tweak somewhere that will force these applications to remember the "Always Hide" setting, instead of defaulting back to "Hide When Inactive?"

The USB ports are showing on the bottom Task Bar (the way it usually shows a Flash Drive when plugged in), with a little computer and a green check. I have not seen this before for USB drives not in use. If you right click it you get the message "Safely Remove Hardware" and if you go further it is called USB Mass Storage Data at Port_#0005.Hub_#0008. This relates to my Drives G,H,I,J. Can someone clarify this?

Not a big deal really, just an oddity thats bugging me. Event viewer just shows normal error and warnings, although one DID show a reg. leak. Not sure if theres any relation there. Like I said, its not big deal...just more curious as to why I can't click or open the icon.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have to take medication twice a day, and I tend to forget to take it. Now, I'm always at my computer, when I'm not working, so in the past I always set up outlook to give me notifications twice a day that I needed to take my meds.
Since having to do a clean install of vista, I'm having some problems getting outlook (the whole of office actually) to install properly. The only thing which really works is word, which is basically all I need, apart from the notification thingy of outlook. Also, in the past I noticed that outlook was kind of eating up some resources, and caused some problems if I just left it running all the time. As I use gmail, I didn't have it set up with a mail account, and it kept asking me to set it up, at least twice a week. Anyways, I would prefer not to use outlook anymore.
So right now I'm temporarily using windows calender (or agenda, as it's called in the dutch version), but it can't be minimized to tray. Now, it has the advantage of giving me a notification even if I haven't turned it on. Unfortunately though, it only does so once. If I close the program after I've received a notification, it then no longer notifies me for the next time I need to take my meds.
So I was wondering if anyone knows a (preferably free) program which can give me 2 notifications per day, at preset times. The program needs to not take too many resources, and needs to minimize to tray.
Running Vista Ultimate - I was ordered to disable UAC. Now I have the little red shield in the tray. How can I get rid of it for just the UAC notification? I still want it to bark at me when the virus defs (AVG) go out of date and it can't update for whatever reason.

I noticed this issue ever since I moved to Vista. Back in XP the two would simply run on startup with no flukes. This time, however, there are a few lapses. Let me explain.
1. Advanced System Care Free starts up most of the time but there are times that it just dosen't and the the tray icon is completely missing even when I start the application manually.
2. Orbit Downloader, no matter how many times I select the option for it to startup it simply refuses to do so.
I have a big white balloon that comes up in my system tray, every time I
load up the computer. This has only been coming up in the last few weeks or so.
The balloon shows a yellow triangle with a black exclamation mark inside.
The balloon points to a square turquoise application icon with a red circle and a red line across it diagonally, on a white background. This sits on the bottom left of the turquoise application icon.
In the balloon, it states,
"Windows has blocked some start-up programmes. Windows blocks programs that require permission to run when Windows starts. Click to view blocked programs."
I did this and it showed me only one program that was blocked, which was my malwarebytes program. This has never happened to me before. So I clicked that program to unblock it but when I rebooted, the balloon and icon reappeared on the system tray.
Is there a way to make the system tray smaller than it is?
I unlocked it, but it will not go any smaller?
