Network And Volume Icons Gone Missing From System Tray
May 3, 2008
I can't get them back either by checking them in the Start Menu Properties as they are both grayed-out or by rebooting. I still have network & internet access and sound. Vista Ultimate SP1 x86.

Advanced System Care Free 3.3.4 and Orbit Downloader 2.8.13 which are both the latest versions respectively.
I noticed this issue ever since I moved to Vista. Back in XP the two would simply run on startup with no flukes. This time, however, there are a few lapses. Let me explain.
1. Advanced System Care Free starts up most of the time but there are times that it just dosen't and the the tray icon is completely missing even when I start the application manually.
2. Orbit Downloader, no matter how many times I select the option for it to startup it simply refuses to do so.

Often, not all of my notification icons show in the System Tray. I check and the app is running - but, without the icon, I can't access the app. Is this fixable?

How do I turn off the icons in the system tray at the bottom right of screen, the number lock, scroll lock and caps lock? When I click on them nothing happens and when I right click on them nothing happens. I have checked the windows start up program in vista, I cant find any thing that remotely comes close to those icons. Why are they there? What do they do? They where there the day my computer arrived and set up and turned on for the first time. Do they take up system resources?

Virtually every time I start up my new laptop (Vista Home Premium SP2) I have to screw around booting and rebooting until the two icons for Volume and Network appear in my notification area. I first tried going to the Properties tab of Notification Area, but the checkboxes for Volume and Network were, for some reason, greyed out. Sometimes, not always though, I can "ungrey" them by continual rebooting until they appear. When they do, I check them and verify that the icons have indeed appeared.
The very next time I start up my computer I have to go through all these contortions yet again to bring the checkboxes back. What the heck is going on? Is there some sort of Registry entry I can make to avoid having to keep rebooting?

Vista Ultimate SP1 (32-bit) on Dell Precision M6300 laptop. These 3 icons are a continual source of problems on this machine. When the machine boots, sometimes all 3 are missing, sometimes just the Power icon appears and sometimes all 3 actually appear but the Network icon has a red X on it even when there are no network connection issues. Just occasionally (say 1 in 5 boots) will all 3 icons be visible and in their correct states.
I have tried the standard fix of applying or de-applying certain policies but none of those policies was ever in force to begin with. It goes without saying that when the icons are missing then they are grayed-out in the properties of the Start Menu. How do I get reliable behaviour from these icons? The machine is part of a domain which may be relevant in relation to Group Policies but I cannot see why they are there sometimes and then disappear after a reboot only to reappear on the next boot.

At random points, my Volume and Network icons disappear from the Notification Area and when I try to restore them from the Properties menu, they're grayed out. The policy registry entries in both HKLM and HKCU don't exist. A simple log out/log in typically restores them, but is usually too much of a nuisance to bother doing.

I am looking for a way to completely and totally hide icons in the System Tray area. I'm already aware of Window's "Hide inactive icons" ability, but this is not what I am looking for. I want a program that will completely hide/remove the icons I specify from the System Tray, while still allowing the programs they are associated with to run. I've done a lot of searching, but haven't found anything useful. The best example I can give you guys is a program called HideSRHI.exe which hides the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon. I need something similar to that program, but which will allow me to specify what icons to remove.

I'm using Vista Home Premium and Windows Update tells me I'm up to date.
Every so often the Network icon in the System Tray tells me that it is not connected to a Network (by displaying a red X) though I can clearly see that I am.

I have noticed that the little blue ball/circle disappears for a few seconds on the Network Access icon in the systems tray sometimes (Vista). That is the one in front of the two monitor icons that can display in an animated way. I have not noticed this phenomenon before much. I know it displays a red cross when there is no connection & an exclamation mark when there is some problem.

My home PC, running Vista and wired to the network, drops momentarily from my home network and looses the connection to the network printer. Usually happens when I click a link to a new page. An error comes up saying something like "page unavailable". I hit "refresh" and the page loads. I can sit at the PC and watch the network Icon in the system tray show up with a "red X" and then the red x disappears. The interesting thing is that my two laptops run wirelessly and wired to the network with out an issue. I am guessing it has to be something with the settings off myPC ethernet card? I tried updating drivers, but no new driver was available.

When adjusting my volume by clicking the speaker in the tray it used to give me a sample ding after I moved the slider and let go of it. Now it's silent.
It had me thinking I had a no audio problem until I played a music file.
I went into sounds and looked for a reference to the conmand to see if there was no sound assigned but cannot figure it out.

I know this is an almost trivial thing but the little details are what make something work smoothly i think so this problem is bugging the hell out of me. When i change the volume on my computer by using the slider, accessed by the little speaker symbol at the bottom right of the windows taskbar, it always made a sound whenever i changed the volume. Now, for some reason, there is no "ping" like sound when ichange it. Why is this and how do i fix it?

I have never seen this before. Is it correct or is there something wrong? I bought a new computer with Vista Home Premium. The USB ports are showing on the bottom Task Bar (the way it usually shows a Flash Drive when plugged in), with a little computer and a green check. I have not seen this before for USB drives not in use. If you right click it you get the message "Safely Remove Hardware" and if you go further it is called USB Mass Storage Data at Port_#0005.Hub_#0008. This relates to my Drives G,H,I,J. Can someone clarify this?

Iv'e been having a warning icon show up in the system tray lately, but I can't right click it, open it, or get any info whatsoever. Not a big deal really, just an oddity thats bugging me. Event viewer just shows normal error and warnings, although one DID show a reg. leak. Not sure if theres any relation there. Like I said, its not big deal...just more curious as to why I can't click or open the icon.

I have a big white balloon that comes up in my system tray, every time I
load up the computer. This has only been coming up in the last few weeks or so.
The balloon shows a yellow triangle with a black exclamation mark inside.
The balloon points to a square turquoise application icon with a red circle and a red line across it diagonally, on a white background. This sits on the bottom left of the turquoise application icon.
In the balloon, it states,
"Windows has blocked some start-up programmes. Windows blocks programs that require permission to run when Windows starts. Click to view blocked programs."
I did this and it showed me only one program that was blocked, which was my malwarebytes program. This has never happened to me before. So I clicked that program to unblock it but when I rebooted, the balloon and icon reappeared on the system tray.

In Vista, there is a bar across the bottom of the screen. It contains tiny icons. The ones on the left are frequently used but currently unrunning programs. The ones in the middle represent running programs. The ones on the right represent system tasks, e.g. screen/keyboard/mouse/volume controls. So questions. What do you call this thing? Do you have names for the three sections? Are there equivalents on other OSes/GUIs? What are they called there? I have heard the terms "system tray" "task bar" "notification area".What precisely do each of these terms refer to? I am interested both in official terminology and common use.

i have a vista home premium 32bit on a laptop, which randomly gets problems: 1.sometimes, the theme becomes from black to gray, yet the themes service seems to work (on the services window). when restarting the service, it becomes black again.
2.sometimes, the language toolbar becomes floating instead of staying on the system tray. sometimes it just disappears, and sometimes it cannot switch to my second language.
3.from some reason, some programs that ran before cannot run anymore. an example of such a program would be crystal player (free/pro edition).
4.sometimes IE8 freezes and doesn't even allow me to close the frozen tab.
5.sometimes, the WIFI connection disconnects, and then it keeps failing re-connecting till i do an OS-restart.
since i have all of those problems, i wish to know if i can fix them, or maybe if i can re-install the OS (or just the SP) itself so that it might fix them. the laptop is HP Compaq presario F700US.everything is updated ,original, and legal. sadly , the computer didn't have the OEM disk of vista. instead, HP told me they have it inside a hidden partition (D) . however, i wish to know if re-installing the OS would delete some important documents and other stuff that I've had over time.

There must have been a Windows update or something because now I have a big white balloon that comes up in my system tray, every time I load up the computer. This has only been coming up in the last few weeks or so, which makes me think it is a Windows update. The balloon shows a yellow triangle with a black exclamation mark inside. It states, "Windows has blocked some startup programmes. Windows blocks programs that require permission to run when Windows starts. Click to view blocked programs."
I did this and it showed me the programmes I always have a on the start menu anyway, with a sign saying 'permitted' for each one, whereas I know this already. Then there are other, new programs, I have never seen before, under the banner 'Windows Defender' with signs saying 'Not Yet Classified.' Eventually, in the same boot up session, I can eventually get rid of the balloon. After that it shows in the system tray, with all my other items already there, as a square turquoise icon with a red circle and a red line across it diagonally, on a white background and this sits on the bottom left of the turquoise icon.
