In Vista, there is a bar across the bottom of the screen. It contains tiny icons. The ones on the left are frequently used but currently unrunning programs. The ones in the middle represent running programs. The ones on the right represent system tasks, e.g. screen/keyboard/mouse/volume controls. So questions. What do you call this thing? Do you have names for the three sections? Are there equivalents on other OSes/GUIs? What are they called there? I have heard the terms "system tray" "task bar" "notification area".What precisely do each of these terms refer to? I am interested both in official terminology and common use.
Today I switched on Windows Defender(for the first time)and ran a quick scan which was fine, but I've noticed a new icon in the systems tray with a green circle and a tick in it.When I hover the pointer over it, it says "Safely Remove Hardware".I've looked everywhere for an explanation but can't find any info anywhere. Can someone tell me what it means please. Also,do I need Defender on as I have McAfee Security Centre installed on my pc.
I have never seen this before. Is it correct or is there something wrong? I bought a new computer with Vista Home Premium. The USB ports are showing on the bottom Task Bar (the way it usually shows a Flash Drive when plugged in), with a little computer and a green check. I have not seen this before for USB drives not in use. If you right click it you get the message "Safely Remove Hardware" and if you go further it is called USB Mass Storage Data at Port_#0005.Hub_#0008. This relates to my Drives G,H,I,J. Can someone clarify this?
Iv'e been having a warning icon show up in the system tray lately, but I can't right click it, open it, or get any info whatsoever. Not a big deal really, just an oddity thats bugging me. Event viewer just shows normal error and warnings, although one DID show a reg. leak. Not sure if theres any relation there. Like I said, its not big deal...just more curious as to why I can't click or open the icon.
Advanced System Care Free 3.3.4 and Orbit Downloader 2.8.13 which are both the latest versions respectively.
I noticed this issue ever since I moved to Vista. Back in XP the two would simply run on startup with no flukes. This time, however, there are a few lapses. Let me explain.
1. Advanced System Care Free starts up most of the time but there are times that it just dosen't and the the tray icon is completely missing even when I start the application manually.
2. Orbit Downloader, no matter how many times I select the option for it to startup it simply refuses to do so.
I have a big white balloon that comes up in my system tray, every time I load up the computer. This has only been coming up in the last few weeks or so.
The balloon shows a yellow triangle with a black exclamation mark inside.
The balloon points to a square turquoise application icon with a red circle and a red line across it diagonally, on a white background. This sits on the bottom left of the turquoise application icon.
In the balloon, it states,
"Windows has blocked some start-up programmes. Windows blocks programs that require permission to run when Windows starts. Click to view blocked programs."
I did this and it showed me only one program that was blocked, which was my malwarebytes program. This has never happened to me before. So I clicked that program to unblock it but when I rebooted, the balloon and icon reappeared on the system tray.
annoying pop up when the system tray is being loaded at boot up. This is the message. SiSTray has stopped working a problem has arisen .windows will close this program down and if the problem can be resolved windows will let you know. The computer works fine after this window is closed down.
Often, not all of my notification icons show in the System Tray. I check and the app is running - but, without the icon, I can't access the app. Is this fixable?
I have a new Dell Vostro 1510 laptop running 32-bit Vista. When I open BlueTooth Settings > Options Even though the Show the Bluetooth icon in the notification area is unchecked, it still shows up. Is there another way to hide it in the system tray?
How do I turn off the icons in the system tray at the bottom right of screen, the number lock, scroll lock and caps lock? When I click on them nothing happens and when I right click on them nothing happens. I have checked the windows start up program in vista, I cant find any thing that remotely comes close to those icons. Why are they there? What do they do? They where there the day my computer arrived and set up and turned on for the first time. Do they take up system resources?
I am looking for a way to completely and totally hide icons in the System Tray area. I'm already aware of Window's "Hide inactive icons" ability, but this is not what I am looking for. I want a program that will completely hide/remove the icons I specify from the System Tray, while still allowing the programs they are associated with to run. I've done a lot of searching, but haven't found anything useful. The best example I can give you guys is a program called HideSRHI.exe which hides the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon. I need something similar to that program, but which will allow me to specify what icons to remove.
I have noticed that the little blue ball/circle disappears for a few seconds on the Network Access icon in the systems tray sometimes (Vista). That is the one in front of the two monitor icons that can display in an animated way. I have not noticed this phenomenon before much. I know it displays a red cross when there is no connection & an exclamation mark when there is some problem.
In my Vista 32 Bit Home Premium there is a yellow triangle icon with an exclamation mark inside it. I don't know what it is and it won't respond if I double click it or mouse over it. Does anyone know what this is?
on XP i used to be able to hover my mouse over the connection icon and view my internet speed. now all it says in vista is "currently connected to local and internet". i would very much like to know the exact speed of my connection (e.g 2meg etc) how would i go about to do this?
I can't get them back either by checking them in the Start Menu Properties as they are both grayed-out or by rebooting. I still have network & internet access and sound. Vista Ultimate SP1 x86.
i have a vista home premium 32bit on a laptop, which randomly gets problems: 1.sometimes, the theme becomes from black to gray, yet the themes service seems to work (on the services window). when restarting the service, it becomes black again.
2.sometimes, the language toolbar becomes floating instead of staying on the system tray. sometimes it just disappears, and sometimes it cannot switch to my second language.
3.from some reason, some programs that ran before cannot run anymore. an example of such a program would be crystal player (free/pro edition).
4.sometimes IE8 freezes and doesn't even allow me to close the frozen tab.
5.sometimes, the WIFI connection disconnects, and then it keeps failing re-connecting till i do an OS-restart.
since i have all of those problems, i wish to know if i can fix them, or maybe if i can re-install the OS (or just the SP) itself so that it might fix them. the laptop is HP Compaq presario F700US.everything is updated ,original, and legal. sadly , the computer didn't have the OEM disk of vista. instead, HP told me they have it inside a hidden partition (D) . however, i wish to know if re-installing the OS would delete some important documents and other stuff that I've had over time.
There must have been a Windows update or something because now I have a big white balloon that comes up in my system tray, every time I load up the computer. This has only been coming up in the last few weeks or so, which makes me think it is a Windows update. The balloon shows a yellow triangle with a black exclamation mark inside. It states, "Windows has blocked some startup programmes. Windows blocks programs that require permission to run when Windows starts. Click to view blocked programs."
I did this and it showed me the programmes I always have a on the start menu anyway, with a sign saying 'permitted' for each one, whereas I know this already. Then there are other, new programs, I have never seen before, under the banner 'Windows Defender' with signs saying 'Not Yet Classified.' Eventually, in the same boot up session, I can eventually get rid of the balloon. After that it shows in the system tray, with all my other items already there, as a square turquoise icon with a red circle and a red line across it diagonally, on a white background and this sits on the bottom left of the turquoise icon.
I no longer have the internet connected icon showing up in the system tray, since doing a reinstall, I'v looked in the obvious places, but no luck - coming from XP it was simple.. tick the box to display tray icon.. but.. where the heck is it in Vista? I dont see a way of re-specifying the "my documents" folder I'm storing docs/phoyos etc in folders on another partition - but can't see how to set the current Documents link - to open THAT folder on "E" drive/partition,
I'm on Vista Ultimate, how can I disable the annoying warning alerts that pop up from system tray?
for example: -- "this device can perform faster" (doesn't even tell you what device..) -- Java update available. -- user account warning -- and all other annoying warnings I want to disable all these warning alerts,
My home PC, running Vista and wired to the network, drops momentarily from my home network and looses the connection to the network printer. Usually happens when I click a link to a new page. An error comes up saying something like "page unavailable". I hit "refresh" and the page loads. I can sit at the PC and watch the network Icon in the system tray show up with a "red X" and then the red x disappears. The interesting thing is that my two laptops run wirelessly and wired to the network with out an issue. I am guessing it has to be something with the settings off myPC ethernet card? I tried updating drivers, but no new driver was available.
Firefox frequently stops working and this seems to have something to do DEP (Data Execution Prevention) as the DEP icon appears in th system tray after each crash. I have tried to turn off DEP for Firefox but system insists that Firefox must run with DEP on.
For some odd reasons, after a friend had install a software for me on my computer, I have shell common files icons showing - mostly associated with video or music downloads, copy and/or when making my own video (using either sony vegas or movie maker). I think it's a bit bothersome because when I transfer file to thumb drive or cd, I have to make sure the shell files are attached. Also since then , most video and music files in my music or video folders have added shell files in folder automatically. Why did that happened and how can I fix the problem???? I can't seem to figure it out on my own!.
If you can remember back a few weeks, Steve Ballmer went on record saying that Microsoft would consider extending the life of Windows XP if enough people asked for it. Afterall, many people don't want to upgrade to Windows Vista because they are perfectly content with XP. The problem was there was no way to ask for it. Sure, you could sign one of the many online petitions, but Microsoft considers those "non-official complaints" and the rest of us simply consider them silly.
Well, word has been passed down to the tech support teams (and then on to Neowin) that they are to begin logging any calls that come in for the sole purpose of requesting an extension to the retail life of Windows XP. The calls will be logged and, if enough complaints are filed, Microsoft will consider giving XP some more time (no pinky promises, though). If you wish to file an official petition yourself, you can simply call the Windows XP Home Edition support numbers for your country and let the operator know that you wish to file an official complaint. Because we're so nice and want to save you the trouble, here are the numbers for a majority of Neowin's visitors
I just purchased a USB hard drive to use for backup purposes. Ran complete image backups on the internal hard drive, no problems. Now when I try to use the "safely remove hardware" icon in the system tray, it keeps telling me that the device is in use. I checked Device Manager and the option "optimize for quick removal" is checked. Indexing is turned off. I can't figure out what's using it.
I'm using Vista Home Premium and Windows Update tells me I'm up to date.
Every so often the Network icon in the System Tray tells me that it is not connected to a Network (by displaying a red X) though I can clearly see that I am.
