Common Shell Files

Mar 12, 2010

For some odd reasons, after a friend had install a software for me on my computer, I have shell common files icons showing - mostly associated with video or music downloads, copy and/or when making my own video (using either sony vegas or movie maker). I think it's a bit bothersome because when I transfer file to thumb drive or cd, I have to make sure the shell files are attached. Also since then , most video and music files in my music or video folders have added shell files in folder automatically. Why did that happened and how can I fix the problem???? I can't seem to figure it out on my own!.

Wscript.shell Run And MS Office Files

May 15, 2010

My work setup is Vista Enterprise 32 bit with SP1 and Office 2007 and IE7. I am writing a browser based application using Visual Studio 2008. I have the following piece of jscript code:

function runFile(_fileName) {
var objO = new ActiveXObject('WScript.Shell');
objO.run(_fileName, 1, false);

var objO = null;
}

and it works just fine for various file types (HTM, MSG, PDF, TIF and TXT) where it opens the application that has been associated with the relevant file extension and displays the file. But when the code is passed a .DOC or .XLS file name a copy of the relevant applicaton instance is started but before the document is displayed the jscript code gives the error message 'Unknown exception' with no further details. why the .DOC and .XLS files are not opening as expected?

System Tray Official Terminology Common Use

Jun 27, 2008

In Vista, there is a bar across the bottom of the screen. It contains tiny icons. The ones on the left are frequently used but currently unrunning programs. The ones in the middle represent running programs. The ones on the right represent system tasks, e.g. screen/keyboard/mouse/volume controls. So questions. What do you call this thing? Do you have names for the three sections? Are there equivalents on other OSes/GUIs? What are they called there? I have heard the terms "system tray" "task bar" "notification area".What precisely do each of these terms refer to? I am interested both in official terminology and common use.

Common Dialog (Load/Save) - Missing Keyboard Shortcuts?

Mar 23, 2008

as a software developer I find it very hard to use Vista just using the keyboard. One of the things I'm missing is the option to create new folders from within the Vista Common Dialogs for loading and saving files. Usually on Windows this is "+, , ". Did I perhaps misconfigure Vista to not support keyboard shortcuts? Or are they missing indeed?

If a program was run before the shell hangs then it will continue to work whereas the explorer is hanging. I have tried to left performance monitor opened and found that the CPU and HDD were not used while the shell was hanging. If I active use the computer without long inactivity then nothing happens.

Say No To Segoe - Changing The Shell Font

Jan 16, 2008

I searched the web in many places and could not find a way to completely change my system to not use Segoe UI fonts. I have a new 21-inch CRT and Segoe UI looks terrible, especially with ClearType turned off. I do not need ClearType at all on my CRT monitors. I need to use CRT's because I often need to change resolutions.

I looked everywhere for a solution... so I them messed around with the registry, and stumbled on something that may truely remove Segoe UI from my user interfaces and dialogs. I do not know how this works on other systems, or systems with Office 2007. I would be very interested in the results that others get, and also to see if someone has Office 2007 that can try it. I included the .REG files in the zip of this little app, so you can open those and see what I do. If it works, or not works for you, let me know. See this somewhat private link in my blog for the tools and .REG files...

Logging Into Windows Vista: Error Showed Up Saying Failed To Set Data For 'Shell'

Jun 14, 2008

Running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 on HP Pavilion TX 1250ee laptop. I have a problem logging into Windows Vista. I get the screen up which allow me to select my account and enter a password. Then I get a welcome message. Trouple is it goes no further. The Screen went black with only a white cursor showing. Seconds later, an error showed up saying failed to set data for 'Shell' I've left it for few hours but nothing changed. I did some troubleshooting like testing the Hard Disk using the Built in Self Test in BIOS and everything was pass. I tried to login through safe mode and fortunatlly it's ok. but I don't exactlly know what's the problem? Before it did happen I was creating CD recovery for my computer using the Recovery Manager. Also, there was some updates from Windows which I think what cause the problem. I'm still troubleshooting and waiting for any respond from you guys.

Moving A Few Files Around And Organising My Folders When I Lost A Few Files From A Folder

I was working on my laptop earlier this evening moving a few files around and organising my folders when I lost a few files from a folder. I don't know exactly what happened, I probably mashed the touch pad. Anyway, now I can't find the files anymore. I've tried running a search but it has come to no avail. How do I find my files? If it makes any difference the files were on a memory stick.

Explorer Files Dont Work And Can't Delete Files

Jul 14, 2009

While installing a program, the process was interrupted and the install created 62000 files using 160gig in my syswow64 folder virtually using all my hd space. However when you go into the syswow64 folder, there is only about 2000 files and 1 gig of space used. I have set the folders to show all hidden files. When I go into the ms dos prompt and do a directory, the files match the 1 gig data.

I can't delete these 62000 files and free up the 160 gig space because I don't believe they are actually there on the hard drive but explorer thinks they are there. Is there any way to rebuild, sync, or otherwise get windows explorer to recognize the correct amount of files that are actually in my syswow64 folder.(2000files 1gig and not 62000files 160gig)

At first I was completely lost, as the files were there not 30 minutes prior... After assuming the worst and thinking that they had corrupted or been deleted due to a virus, I:

- Made sure my folder options were set properly (I can view all hidden files)
- Thoroughly checked the recycle bin
- Did numerous searches
- Downloaded Google Desktop and searched some more
- Ran various "undelete" and "recovery" programs with no results
- Did a system restore...........

Exe Files Open As Text Files

Sep 26, 2009

I have encountered a very strange problem. I have downloaded two exe files recently. When I doubleclick on the exe file, instead of the application installing, what should happen but Word of all things opens with, in the case of one of them a box headed 'File Conversion - arw5setup.msi', and a similar wording in the second, asking me to select the encoding that makes my document readable. Whatever I select, the exe file then opens as a text file.

(The reference to an msi file is baffling as both files were exe files.) When it happened the first time I thought it was a corrupt file, but when it happened again it has to be that there is something wrong with my system. Is this a virus? Spybot has just come up with a clean slate ...

Installation: "Copying Files" Stage Instantly, Hangs Up At 0% On "Expanding Files"

When I start installing it, it goes through the "Copying Files" stage instantly, and then hangs up at 0% on "Expanding Files". Then, anywhere from 10 seconds to 3 minutes later, my screen goes black like it's not receiving a monitor signal anymore, and nothing else happens.

I Googled the problem and found a ton of threads here and elsewhere with the same issue, with a slight variation, but none of them had issues posted, and they were all relatively old.
