I've had some issues with the winrar shell integration, the program works fine for extracting files with doubleclick to open it up, extract to etc. But using rightclick, drag, extract here just doesn't do anything. I figured it had something to do with the untrusted programs popupthing, so i tried disabling the Windows Defender which still didn't help.
View 5 RepliesI am running WinRAR 3.71 with x64 Vista Ultimate. The program runs fine, however I am unable to get the shell integration to work. It was enabled and I reset it, right clicked on a rar file and it still was not showing me the options of WinRAR.
View 6 Replies View RelatedJust finished my upgrade from Home Premium x64 SP1 to Ultimate x64 SP1. I've been lurking here on the forum for a while now and having seen quite a few folks having problems with their upgrades, I thought a post sharing the steps I took, which resulted in a Smooooth and problem free upgrade, might be of interest to some.
In no way am I advocating or recommending ANY of the steps that are shown here (i.e. turning off the firewall, etc.).
First phase:
-Purchase and download the upgrade to my hard drive (shoparhive.com was less costly than digital locker). Since I live 40 miles away from the nearest store, I preferred the digital download.
-Extract the .iso file using winrar to an empty folder on the desktop.
-Performed full system virus scan.
-Performed full system spyware scan.
-Performed full system backup to the removable HP media drive.
-Burn the downloaded iso file to dvd, and the extracted files to another dvd.
Second phase:....................
My Pavilion Vista laptop has been running slower and slower. Especially while on the web. Pages take forever to come up. Even program files or the All Programs menu. I have tried disabling Windows Defender thinking it might be scanning everything. Is this a possibility?

I have Vista Premium and when I searched the Internet for instructions on how to turn off the Defender, I am told to go to Defender and click on Tools and then Options and then go to: Administrator options. Deselect the Use Windows Defender box and press the Save button. My Options does not have Administrator Options at bottom (nor Use Windows Defender box). My Options has two categories: Automatic scanning AND Default actions.
1- Why don't I see/have "Administrator Options?
2- And, how can I disable Defender prior to installing AVG?

WinRAR It just doesn't work!!!Everytime I try to extract files it says : " No archives found" or that it cannot create folder. I installed it all over again but it still doesn't work! BTW I have MS Vista Home Premium 64bit SP1 OriginPro 8 Cannot open a file that is not in the folder that was created when the program was installed. Well, that wouldn't be a major problem if I could open that folder or, for that matter, if that folder really existed outsidse the program.
I am running Windows Vista Premium Home SP1. When I boot my computer, Windows Defender doesn't start automatically. It works fine if I start it manually. I have never run Windows OneCare, MSCONFIG shows it set to start, the Windows Defender service is set to automatic and Tools | Options has all the checkboxes checked.
View 9 Replies View RelatedThe computer has worked fine since then, I've used the internet at wi-fi hotspots around my city, with never a single problem...until last night. While I was on-line at home, I was checking a website that I have always checked before without issue when my Windows Defender suddenly popped open and said that my computer was under threat and blocked Internet Explorer from me and started running a diagnosic. Well apparently it said that I had like 26 infections in my computer. That I had worms, spyware, adware, that someone was watching my key logs, etc, etc, and it gave me the option to click on the remove all. So I clicked on it, but instead of doing anything, another message box appeared saying that my Windows Defender is not the full version and that I must either purchase the full version or enter my key code for it. I don't have a key code since I never bought this program, was pre-installed.
Anyways, now whenever I try to open Internet Explorer, the Windows Defender pops up and says that my IE is infected and asks if I would like to purchase the full Windows Defender. I have clicked on both options. If I say "no", the computer blocks my IE, if I say yes, it opens my IE, but instead of taking me to a Windows website, it takes me to www.antivirus-care.com, which my browser says does not exist and instead takes me to another page with a listing of anti-virus program sites to buy from. Well, all this seems fishy to me because I can't do anything with the Windows Defender program. I can't turn it off, I can't change its settings, or even look at other options it has. Instead whenever I try the message window of "would I like to buy the full version now?" appears and keeps appearing.
I have Avast Home Edition on my Vista laptop. I ran a scan yesterday but this morning the Defender bottom righthand icon had an exclamation mark in it and I'd thought, from using 3 other AV programs before, that Defender doesn't nag if you have other software doing scans? Or do I need to set it to do nothing?
Also, when I run the Avast scan, it says in its display (above Type of Current Scan etc) Scan Archive Files: disabled - should it be like that? What does that mean, and if I need to change it, how do I, as I couldn't find anything in the settings. I'm assuming there's no connection between my two questions.
my computer new less then a year ago and use it for internet access, word processing, and a little gaming. recently i've had update issues, but even stranger when I attempt to extract a file using vista's in home extraction program(dont have a third party one) I get a message "Windows Explorer has stopped working" which then immediatly is followed by "Windows explorer is restarting." Along with that I also got a COM surrogate error this morning when I tried to extact a file. I have no idea whats going on, I called Gateway support, and they are sending me a wipe disc but I'd prefer to just fix this.
Running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 on HP Pavilion TX 1250ee laptop. I have a problem logging into Windows Vista. I get the screen up which allow me to select my account and enter a password. Then I get a welcome message. Trouple is it goes no further. The Screen went black with only a white cursor showing. Seconds later, an error showed up saying failed to set data for 'Shell' I've left it for few hours but nothing changed. I did some troubleshooting like testing the Hard Disk using the Built in Self Test in BIOS and everything was pass. I tried to login through safe mode and fortunatlly it's ok. but I don't exactlly know what's the problem? Before it did happen I was creating CD recovery for my computer using the Recovery Manager. Also, there was some updates from Windows which I think what cause the problem. I'm still troubleshooting and waiting for any respond from you guys.

I corresponded with digital river who forwarded me three files for the Vista upgrade.After downloading via FireFox I begin the installation. Once the installation begins I get the following error message: "Cannot extract Windows Vista Setup to your hard drive. Please ensure that you can create files and folders in the same folder where VistaSetupPrep.exe was downloaded." Now, I have troubleshooted this way:
I have unprotected the folder that contains all the files and unclicked the Read Only option. I have attempted to copy and paste the install.wim and the boot.wim files into the source folder that is created after I have begun the install, as someone in the Microsoft Answers Forum suggested. I also tried to burn it to a DVD, which gave me another error message.
This is extremely frustrating as I purchased this OS on discount thinking it is an affordable alternative. I can also see that I am not the only one with this issue. So it would be nice if someone from Microsoft found a solution to this issue. I currently have Windows XP Media Center Edition SP 3.

As you see in the title an instance of svchost.exe always using about 70,000 K (right now another using 88,000 K) in task manager and I would like to know why and if I can bring that number down. "Almost" no problems untill yesterday: when I tried to install winrar, the message "winrar.exe does not work properly" appeard (I don't knwow if this is correctly translated from my Dutch version). 1) My WinRAR score with the TLB fix enabled is a sickening 80!!! vs 454 disabled. So I am certain that the fix was disabled at my score of 454.
2)Regarding number of active cores:
a) When I run task manager I see only ONE window for CPU in performance.
b) Running CPU-Z V1.49 shows ONE Processor ONE Core
c) CrystalCUPID V 4.15 shows only ONE of One cores (Code name Agena?) I should see 1/FOUR
d) In Vista Sidebar using mCPU Gadget: Shows Four cores HOWEVER
only ONE ever displays activity. I tested it by really loading up applications and Never saw activity of the other three cores!!!......

I have WinRar, when I try to extract .exe files it gives me an error saying "! Cannot execute". Now before you say it is Winrar's fault you are wrong. An admin said that 7-Zip is what I should be using. But, guess what happens when I use 7-Zip? Another error. Let me address this one: "could not find this item" When I extract. Now, is Vista blocking this in some sort of way?

Recently, if I don't use a computer about 20-30. minutes and then try to run something then the explorer hangs and doesn't, ALT + CTRL + DEL combination doesn't work . If a program was run before the shell hangs then it will continue to work whereas the explorer is hanging. I have tried to left performance monitor opened and found that the CPU and HDD were not used while the shell was hanging. If I active use the computer without long inactivity then nothing happens.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been using Vista Ultimate x64 for the last 5 months and have to say it's been a massive learing curve due to its fragility - 4 full rebuilds in the last 4 months - and not much fun when using SATA RAID. Anyway, got up yesterday morning, turned on the computer and it had managed to corrupt itself yet again: Windows Defender, Windows Picture Viewer and a host of desktop icons refused to find their pathways home and so decided against a full rebuild and started the repair option with a boot to the DVD. I set this off running and went to work at 12:30pm...
I came back 5 hours later and still had the dialog box " Finalising Registry" running on my screen! Well, a quick restart and i tried the upgrade option once back in Vista from the DVD. This then took and unbelievable 7 hours to complete and was finally ready - after updates - at 01:20am this morning, but a full clean install would have taken about 1-2 hours to finish, so i'll be doing that in future!.........
i think i accidentally deleted a shell registry that makes my windows explorer open up new windows all the time without a option to open within a window but always to open a new window whenever i double click a folder. How can i resolve this?
