A while ago I bought an acer laptop with a legal windows vista edition (dutch). "Almost" no problems untill yesterday: when I tried to install winrar, the message "winrar.exe does not work properly" appeard (I don't knwow if this is correctly translated from my Dutch version). First I thougt it it had something to do with winrar, but today I discovered I couldn't install any software from the internet.

WinRAR It just doesn't work!!!Everytime I try to extract files it says : " No archives found" or that it cannot create folder. I installed it all over again but it still doesn't work! BTW I have MS Vista Home Premium 64bit SP1 OriginPro 8 Cannot open a file that is not in the folder that was created when the program was installed. Well, that wouldn't be a major problem if I could open that folder or, for that matter, if that folder really existed outsidse the program.
After using winrar to extract a large file (1gb+) my computer becomes really slow. The only way to fix it is to restart it which takes about 10 mins! I have noticed in task manager that the Physical Memory is up over 90% after extracting a large file. I never used to have this problem how can I fix it?
View 8 Replies View RelatedWinRAR = 454 w/TLB fix diabled Avg scores for my system 1,100 Call Juarez = 30 FPS Avg score = 45. Dont know whats wrong. Could it be a dead core? How can I check?
1) My WinRAR score with the TLB fix enabled is a sickening 80!!! vs 454 disabled. So I am certain that the fix was disabled at my score of 454.
2)Regarding number of active cores:
a) When I run task manager I see only ONE window for CPU in performance.
b) Running CPU-Z V1.49 shows ONE Processor ONE Core
c) CrystalCUPID V 4.15 shows only ONE of One cores (Code name Agena?) I should see 1/FOUR
d) In Vista Sidebar using mCPU Gadget: Shows Four cores HOWEVER
only ONE ever displays activity. I tested it by really loading up applications and Never saw activity of the other three cores!!!......
the problem i am having is that when i try to install software i get the message 'access denied' according to the software publisher its vista compatiable
i am trying to install winzip, winrar, nero all sorts really and get similar messages
Everytime i use winrar (trillion times a day). User Account Control reports "an unidentified program wants to access your computer". It's not "unidentified" - I know what it is, i trust it & it's *my* computer - not Microsoft's. How do i tell UAC that? Or is it a Vista fail safe device to only allow the use of Microsoft Software?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've had some issues with the winrar shell integration, the program works fine for extracting files with doubleclick to open it up, extract to etc. But using rightclick, drag, extract here just doesn't do anything. I figured it had something to do with the untrusted programs popupthing, so i tried disabling the Windows Defender which still didn't help.
View 5 Replies View RelatedJust finished my upgrade from Home Premium x64 SP1 to Ultimate x64 SP1. I've been lurking here on the forum for a while now and having seen quite a few folks having problems with their upgrades, I thought a post sharing the steps I took, which resulted in a Smooooth and problem free upgrade, might be of interest to some.
In no way am I advocating or recommending ANY of the steps that are shown here (i.e. turning off the firewall, etc.).
First phase:
-Purchase and download the upgrade to my hard drive (shoparhive.com was less costly than digital locker). Since I live 40 miles away from the nearest store, I preferred the digital download.
-Extract the .iso file using winrar to an empty folder on the desktop.
-Performed full system virus scan.
-Performed full system spyware scan.
-Performed full system backup to the removable HP media drive.
-Burn the downloaded iso file to dvd, and the extracted files to another dvd.
Second phase:....................
I have been wracking my brain for weeks now, trying to play C&C First Decade with Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge over the LAN, it will only run on IPX networking which I could setup with 2x XP machines, I have Vista Ultimate on my PC, and XP on another, I found some drivers for IPX to work on Vista, didn't work ... So I loaded Hamachi which had built-in IPX support. Now when I open RA2, it no longer says IPX unavailable, it shows 00 00 00...
So it can see my Hamachi adapter with IPX support, great! The other XP machine has Hamachi installed, and they are both VPN'd (Connected) on the same Hamachi Network. They don't see each other... The XP machine shows a few IPX networks, I have tried switching to them all, even put the Hamachi adapter and the LAN adapter to the top of the preferred networks list. This was sort-of a breeze with both XP, but with Vista it's looking to be a bit tricky. I have no firewalls running on either machine and I am pretty cluey when it comes to networking (TCP/IP that is).
Ive just bought some new headphones yet when i plug them in the sound still comes out of the speakers. I know the headphones do work because i use them with my mp3 player
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have had Windows Vista 64 for 2 Months now and of that period of time it worked soundly for about 2 Weeks. I am NOT an irresponsible User, I don't just delete Data, I know a little something about computing, I don't visit or download from dubious sites etc.
1) Without any reason software suddently doesn't work.
a) I installed a Antivirussoftware - after 3 Weeks it suddently didn't work any more (Kaspersky) I couldn't reinstall it.
b) I installed a new Antivirussoftware - after 5 days it didn't work anymore.
c) 4 days later I started to get errormessages "Windows Defender doesn't work any more" - "Windows Hostprocess doesn't work anymore"
Well, my Memory RAM doesn`t work like it used to.
Later on, my Memory RAM Score was like 5,9 on RAM and now it is 4,8 after i formatted my computer. I`m sometimes experiencing some slowdowns, like i type a entire word, and after 3 seconds it shows up. Or i scroll down, and after like 4 , 5 seconds the page shows up.
OBS: The Paging file is managed by the System ( I Used to let it on 4 mb )

I can't play Word Riot or Upwords. I could before SP 1. What could be the problem? These Service packs are more trouble than they are helpful.

(now does not work on any pc) when i plugged it in first time a message came up saying error could not read what was inserted etc. My front USB's appear to know something is going in sometimes and then other times don't. it read a webcam being connected. but when i tried an external hard drive i got a similar problem as with my usb flash drive. luckily that still works on my old pc though. back usb ports seem to be doing similar weird behaviour. P.S mouse and keyboard both work fine.

I want to share this Internet connection to an Ad Hoc network through a WLAN interface. In this article it's said that we should not use Internet Connection Sharing in an existing network with Domain Name System (DNS) servers, gateways, DHCP servers, or systems configured for static IP addresses. And this explains why ICS does not work for me although the error returned is not clear. What can I do in my case to share my Internet connection ?

View 4 Replies View RelatedEver since I burned a movie to a dvd my dvd/cd drive will not allow me to watch a movie or listen to a music cd. When I insert a movie dvd my computer does not recogonize it. I go under my computer to my dvd drive and try to open it and it ejects the disk and says please insert a disk. If I insert a blank dvd +rw it recogonizes it. It is like my computer dvd/cd drive is in a permanent burn mode, not a read mode.

Under XP the authentication has the value 'MS CHAP'. So I suppose that my VPN ist not working under Vista as MS has decided to not include MS CHAP v1 any more. However I need this VPN connection and the provider is not able to change the authentication method. Is there any way to bring vista to use MS CHAP v1? Or can somebody please reccommend a third-party VPN-Client which supports MS CHAP v1? Or is the final solution really to reinstall XP?

Although all sharing/permissions are properly set and it worked the last time it will not work when needed again without rebooting one or more computers. This is why mine and nearly every business on the face of the Earth has not adapted Vista: it is totally unsuitable for mission critical networks of any size. XP is far from perfect but it is orders of magnitude more stable for networking. Vista SP3 or whatever name Microsoft thinks they can peddle the same schlock under is a deader than dead issue already because it is nothing but Vista with a marginally different GUI and with the economy the way it is who gives a rat's behind about it anyway?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Hp Pavilion notebook with Vista Home Premium. The PC boots fine, but when I log in to the user account with the password the screen turns all white.
I also tried in safe mode and in safe mode as soon as I put in the password in the screen turns all black. It says "safe mode" in the corners and the top of the screen says:
"Microsoft® Windows® (Build 6001:Service Pack1)"
You can move the mouse pointer around but there is nothing to click on and the screen remains black.
I came across this forum and I followed the instructions in the tutorials on fixing Vista.
First I tried How to Do a Startup Repair in Vista and it said it was unsuccessful.
Next, I followed the directions from "How to Do a System Restore in Vista" and it said " no restore point have been created on this computer's system disk"
Now I am trying "How To Perform a Repair Installation For Vista"
but when I get to "step 10. Click on the Upgrade option" the upgrade option is greyed out.
Why am I not given the "upgrade option" and what should I do now?
Just got a new PC with Vista and my screensaver does not work. A previous thread indicated that it could be caused by a wireless mouse. I have a MS Intellipoint 4.1. Is this the cause of the problem?
