View 4 RepliesI have been wracking my brain for weeks now, trying to play C&C First Decade with Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge over the LAN, it will only run on IPX networking which I could setup with 2x XP machines, I have Vista Ultimate on my PC, and XP on another, I found some drivers for IPX to work on Vista, didn't work ... So I loaded Hamachi which had built-in IPX support. Now when I open RA2, it no longer says IPX unavailable, it shows 00 00 00...
So it can see my Hamachi adapter with IPX support, great! The other XP machine has Hamachi installed, and they are both VPN'd (Connected) on the same Hamachi Network. They don't see each other... The XP machine shows a few IPX networks, I have tried switching to them all, even put the Hamachi adapter and the LAN adapter to the top of the preferred networks list. This was sort-of a breeze with both XP, but with Vista it's looking to be a bit tricky. I have no firewalls running on either machine and I am pretty cluey when it comes to networking (TCP/IP that is).
Ive just bought some new headphones yet when i plug them in the sound still comes out of the speakers. I know the headphones do work because i use them with my mp3 player
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have had Windows Vista 64 for 2 Months now and of that period of time it worked soundly for about 2 Weeks. I am NOT an irresponsible User, I don't just delete Data, I know a little something about computing, I don't visit or download from dubious sites etc.
1) Without any reason software suddently doesn't work.
a) I installed a Antivirussoftware - after 3 Weeks it suddently didn't work any more (Kaspersky) I couldn't reinstall it.
b) I installed a new Antivirussoftware - after 5 days it didn't work anymore.
c) 4 days later I started to get errormessages "Windows Defender doesn't work any more" - "Windows Hostprocess doesn't work anymore"
Well, my Memory RAM doesn`t work like it used to.
Later on, my Memory RAM Score was like 5,9 on RAM and now it is 4,8 after i formatted my computer. I`m sometimes experiencing some slowdowns, like i type a entire word, and after 3 seconds it shows up. Or i scroll down, and after like 4 , 5 seconds the page shows up.
OBS: The Paging file is managed by the System ( I Used to let it on 4 mb )
-And can someone give me that topic that Brink made to tweak performance?
That All-In-One Tutorial topic.
-And how do i tweak my Memory RAM, Processor and HD to hit its best performance?
I can't play Word Riot or Upwords. I could before SP 1. What could be the problem? These Service packs are more trouble than they are helpful.

View 5 Replies View Relatedi plugged a usb flash drive into my front usb. (now does not work on any pc) when i plugged it in first time a message came up saying error could not read what was inserted etc. My front USB's appear to know something is going in sometimes and then other times don't. it read a webcam being connected. but when i tried an external hard drive i got a similar problem as with my usb flash drive. luckily that still works on my old pc though. back usb ports seem to be doing similar weird behaviour. P.S mouse and keyboard both work fine.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running windows Vista Ultimate, I'm connected to a domain network and internet via the same Ethernet interface with a static IP. I want to share this Internet connection to an Ad Hoc network through a WLAN interface. In this article it's said that we should not use Internet Connection Sharing in an existing network with Domain Name System (DNS) servers, gateways, DHCP servers, or systems configured for static IP addresses. And this explains why ICS does not work for me although the error returned is not clear. What can I do in my case to share my Internet connection ?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to Vista and do now experience that a VPN connection which worked fine under XP now does not work any more. Under XP the authentication has the value 'MS CHAP'. So I suppose that my VPN ist not working under Vista as MS has decided to not include MS CHAP v1 any more. However I need this VPN connection and the provider is not able to change the authentication method. Is there any way to bring vista to use MS CHAP v1? Or can somebody please reccommend a third-party VPN-Client which supports MS CHAP v1? Or is the final solution really to reinstall XP?

View 9 Replies View RelatedEvery time I start thinking Vista is not so bad I make the mistake of trying to connect to another Vista computer. Although all sharing/permissions are properly set and it worked the last time it will not work when needed again without rebooting one or more computers. This is why mine and nearly every business on the face of the Earth has not adapted Vista: it is totally unsuitable for mission critical networks of any size. XP is far from perfect but it is orders of magnitude more stable for networking. Vista SP3 or whatever name Microsoft thinks they can peddle the same schlock under is a deader than dead issue already because it is nothing but Vista with a marginally different GUI and with the economy the way it is who gives a rat's behind about it anyway?

You can move the mouse pointer around but there is nothing to click on and the screen remains black.
I came across this forum and I followed the instructions in the tutorials on fixing Vista.
First I tried How to Do a Startup Repair in Vista and it said it was unsuccessful.
Next, I followed the directions from "How to Do a System Restore in Vista" and it said " no restore point have been created on this computer's system disk"
Now I am trying "How To Perform a Repair Installation For Vista"
but when I get to "step 10. Click on the Upgrade option" the upgrade option is greyed out.
Why am I not given the "upgrade option" and what should I do now?

All I care about having work, for now, is simple file sharing with no user restrictions and printer sharing. All Workgroups are the same. The two XP's use Zone Alarm The Vista uses the built-in Microsoft firewall Some login Usernames are different on the three machines. The router is a Linksys WRT160N
Situation: The XP's are fine. The Vista shows the networking map OK (I think). The reason I say I think is that, under the router icon is a switch icon. I have no switch that I know of. At least the Vista machine recognizes that there are three machines in the network. Internet works fine on all three machines. However, in Explorer, under Network, on the Vista machine, only the Vista machine shows up with its' shared folders.
I recently switched from XP x64 to Vista x64, and my speakers (nor headset and mic) no longer work correctly on this computer. I've tried uninstalling, reinstalling, updating, and changing all the settings multiple times, but I couldn't get them to work correctly.
The only time I can get my speakers (and headset) to make any sound at all is by plugging the speakers into the "Center/Subwoofer Speaker Out" plug. However, they play only as the center(left) and subwoofer(right) then. (This is while the Speaker Configuration is set to "5.1 Speaker", and I only have 2 speakers and 1 subwoofer.)I can't seem to get any sound out of the "Front Speaker Out" (green plug).I'm using 2 left/right speakers that connect into a subwoofer, which uses only 1 plug into the computer.I was able to get both speakers and headset to work at the same time when using XP x64 and Windows7, but nothing works in Vista. (I cannot recall if I was using the "Front Speaker Out" plug when they were working, but I have tried all other plugs in Vista.
I have a desktop computer. Windows Vista Business Pro 2007 (6.0). 18 months ago, a friend from church who builds and fixes computers on the side; put the Vista OS in this tower by Centurion. I have never been inside a pc so do not know anything about the inside. It has: 2 gig RAM, DVD/CD-Rom drive: Memorez DVD16+/-DL4RWnD2ATA Device; IED Channel, VIA Bus Master IDE Controller - 0571; Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver (WMD); Mainboard-MSI PT 880 Neo-FSR (Ms-7043); Chipset: VIA PT880. I have contacted the VIA company with no replies about the soundcard. I have tried both a desktop and headset w/mic and neither works.
Someone told me it is hard to get a microphone to work with Vista. Another said the guy put a new OS onto old hardware. I am on SS, so cannot afford another pc. Do I need a new soundcard, or try a usb mic? PLease advise. I have gone into sound in control panel and unmuted the mic. It says in there Line-in not available. Jack not available.

View 7 Replies View RelatedAfter three months of failing to make two Vista Business PCs network via a crossover cable, I gave up and I now have the following:
A Netgear GS605 (5 port) ethernet switch. To this switch, I have connected two identical Vista PCs (call them A and B), and a Livebox.
Computer A connects to the Internet perfectly well via the Netgear switch to its attached Livebox; computer B connects to the Internet using a wireless connection to a different Livebox.
However, the PCs can not see each other.
On computer A, all I can see is "Network", "Access: Local and Internet". The network map shows "This computer->Gateway->Internet".
The network is Private On computer B, I see the wireless network (Private) plus "Local Area Connection", "Unidentified Network", "Access: Limited Connectivity".The Local Area Connection is Public and will not stay Private when I change it. After a short time, or a reboot, it reverts to Public.
i have been running windows vista on my laptop for the past 8 months with no problems.... recentley i did something really bad and compressed my hard drive and it would no longer boot. So after much searching on the net i found something about bootmgr fix through dos, which i did but that did not work. Someone suggested slaving the hard drive to another machine which i did and it uncompressed..WAHEY.....or so i thought . When i put it back in the laptop it said Bootmgr is compressed so i put the vista disk and ran the startup repair.
this seemed to work for the first boot then on the second nothing happened it just would not boot so i put in the vista disc and an error message appeared, something along the lines of a hardware change has happened since the last boot and windows could not find the drivers. the hardware in question is the cd/dvd rewriter.......................so my problem is now how do i install vista on the harddrive when i can not get the disc to run in the drive? p.s i have formatted the hard drive so it is a clean install and RC1 of vista which i have will seem to run (have only tried it to see if it gets further than the real version)
