I have WinRar, when I try to extract .exe files it gives me an error saying "! Cannot execute". Now before you say it is Winrar's fault you are wrong. An admin said that 7-Zip is what I should be using. But, guess what happens when I use 7-Zip? Another error. Let me address this one: "could not find this item" When I extract. Now, is Vista blocking this in some sort of way?

View 7 Replies View Relatedmy computer new less then a year ago and use it for internet access, word processing, and a little gaming. recently i've had update issues, but even stranger when I attempt to extract a file using vista's in home extraction program(dont have a third party one) I get a message "Windows Explorer has stopped working" which then immediatly is followed by "Windows explorer is restarting." I can not extract files nor move files around that are in these files without this occuring. I went to the problem reports and solutions and get the following message:

Along with that I also got a COM surrogate error this morning when I tried to extact a file. I have no idea whats going on, I called Gateway support, and they are sending me a wipe disc but I'd prefer to just fix this.
i have all these temp files in the temp folder and they keep appearing and multiplying. The first time i found them the folder was near 8gb and i deleted all of them no problem. Now they are back again and it's getting close to 4gb but i can't delete them this time.
I couldn't find anything on google. The only two things that came up was something to do with some Offline Explorer Pro program and the other one was that some guys hard drive was failing. One of my drive did recently fail on me but it's not in the computer anymore.
The 1st problem is WMP11 failing to play .WMA or WMV files in Full Mode. The canned posts zachd has supplied everywhere does not fix the problem for most people. THIS IS A WMP11 PROBLEM! It is not an Intel graphics problem, or a Codec problem, or some other vendor's problem. This is evidenced by the fact that video will play if you start in Skin Mode and then switch to Full Mode while it is already playing. However it won't play if you start off in Full Mode first. The 2nd problem is THERE IS NO WMP11 UNINSTALL/REINSTALL!
Why hasn't it occurred to Dev that making a clean uninstall/reinstall procedure will resolve the WMP11 problems caused by corrupt files and registry entries? The Full Mode problem is a recurring problem seen in numerous user forums on the across Internet. Please do something to correct this problem once and for all.
A relative recently sent me an e-mail with scanned family photos from long ago -- which, unfortunately, were embedded within the e-mail rather than attached to the message. Can anyone tell me how to extract such embedded photos.

I figured it had something to do with the untrusted programs popupthing, so i tried disabling the Windows Defender which still didn't help.

I've been lurking here on the forum for a while now and having seen quite a few folks having problems with their upgrades, I thought a post sharing the steps I took, which resulted in a Smooooth and problem free upgrade, might be of interest to some.
In no way am I advocating or recommending ANY of the steps that are shown here (i.e. turning off the firewall, etc.).
First phase:
-Purchase and download the upgrade to my hard drive (shoparhive.com was less costly than digital locker). Since I live 40 miles away from the nearest store, I preferred the digital download.
-Extract the .iso file using winrar to an empty folder on the desktop.
-Performed full system virus scan.
-Performed full system spyware scan.
-Performed full system backup to the removable HP media drive.
-Burn the downloaded iso file to dvd, and the extracted files to another dvd.

Sometimes, I hear noises coming from it, not just the normal spinning of the disk, but it kinda sounds like your repetitively tapping your keys on a keyboard.Or a laptop parking it's head.I have google'd it, and some of the other clues are random BSODS.
I can sometimes reproduce the sound, when I click on something that needs usage of the HDD.My the send and receive times haven't been changed since I got the computer.
The drive is a "640GB SATA 7200RPM" "Western Digital Caviar Blue". Are these drives normally loud? It feels like it's running a little warm.If it is the heat, could I just plop a heatsink on it from an old video card?

Also, I am not sure if this is just normal HDD noise, because on my old computer, my case was always closed, and on my new one, I always have the side off when using it.

I installed it, but the update was still showing and it still wanted to install the update - but I thought that's what I just did manually! Why did it still want to install it?
I hid the update from the Windows Update screen.
The next day, two updates came in - security updates for:
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 and
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2
The update for Service Pack 3 installed successfully but the update for Service Pack 2 failed (Error Code 733F).
I hid the Service Pack 2 update, but it keeps coming back!
What am I supposed to do?
Can download Vista Home Prem Service Pack1, but after an hour plus of installing, it fails... I had a guy from MS's online chat-room taking control of my PC for two hours and he still didnt get it installed. I read the forums here, and followed some instrictions emailed by another MS tech helper... which then l;ead me into hours more messing around because they said I had to rename a file, but Vista says I don't have permission (so I then spent another two hours following various "take ownership" instructions, and that didnt work, so I rebooted into safe mode and did it again and I still can't rename the file, so can't complete the instructions...

I am using Win XP Pro and just recently my computer was hit by a power surge.killed the power supply.I have recently replaced it with an OCZ 500Watt supply and its up again. But ever since then, its been running a little strange. When I open up my computer,and browse through a couple folders,explorer.exe "encounters a problem" and restarts itself. The computer was running totally fine before this power surge.. its my everyday web design computer so I'm on it almost 24/7.It seems to possibly happen when I copy/paste files. Besides this,it seems like the HD "thinks" a lot more than it used to.I'm kind of leaning towards the fact that my new power supply fan is a lot quieter,if not silent,compared to my other one.. so I hear the HD more than I used to.I HAVE run a memory test on both 1GB DDR2 sticks AND a Seagate HD test on my two maxtor hard drives. Everything passed with flying colors.

I corresponded with digital river who forwarded me three files for the Vista upgrade.After downloading via FireFox I begin the installation. Once the installation begins I get the following error message: "Cannot extract Windows Vista Setup to your hard drive. Please ensure that you can create files and folders in the same folder where VistaSetupPrep.exe was downloaded." Now, I have troubleshooted this way:
I have unprotected the folder that contains all the files and unclicked the Read Only option. I have attempted to copy and paste the install.wim and the boot.wim files into the source folder that is created after I have begun the install, as someone in the Microsoft Answers Forum suggested. I also tried to burn it to a DVD, which gave me another error message.
This is extremely frustrating as I purchased this OS on discount thinking it is an affordable alternative. I can also see that I am not the only one with this issue. So it would be nice if someone from Microsoft found a solution to this issue. I currently have Windows XP Media Center Edition SP 3.

My computer has been SUPER SLOW for the past few days, I've restarted it, turned off bloatware processes, and still no luck... It will be a complete system lock up, where the whole computer will stop responding for at most 30 seconds, then if I click while it's locked up, nothing will happen. Then when the computer comes out of the freeze, I'll hear the computer beeping, like the type of beeps from the bios, not from the OS.
Also, when the computer does this, the Hard Drive light will be constantly on, it'll try to read or write for a few seconds then stop, and repeat the process. And then it'll start to do its crap and the computer won't be locked up. One last thing... While typing this, my computer was locking up, and I'd still type, and nothing would appear on the screen, until the computer started to respond again.
Problem 1) one of my HDD's are failing. The noise it's been making ie clicking, whirring has been steadily getting worse. The problem here is that I can't tell which one of my three drives is the culprit.
Problem 2) Blank monitor. I first noticed this little doozy a couple of weeks ago when I removed a second monitor. Upon restart, the original monitor stayed in power save mode while the PC kept booting up as normal. That too has slowly become worse. It now requires me to kill the power and keep restarting until it turns on. It's not the monitor, because it works fine with other devices.
Problem 3) Freezing. This is where I'm a little stumped as to who the culprit is. Ocassionaly the PC just freezes, requiring a hard reset. Sometimes after a hard reset, that's when the monitor issue happens......
Shortly after installing Vista SP1 I have started to get message "a drive in Raid 0 is failing". This sounds bad. I have tried running checkdisk on my hard drive but it does not show any problems. If I reinstall the OS from scratch, will it fix the problem? Or is this a hardware problem?

"Right-click on the Documents file and choose properties. Select customize Use this folder as template: All Items Apply this template to subfolders" This list a fix for when located in specific area but for myself these files are not located it the documents folder and this fix does not work. If you feel this post would be better served elsewhere (security, network sharing)
on my new Windows Vista Home Edition, whenever I try running these application I get a popup saying "you need to update your DirectX to version 8.1 or higher". I checked on the DirectX I have, and it turned out to be version 10! How can I run the applications again?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI started experiencing glitch graphics that kinda looked like someone had splashed paint all over my screen... I tried driver updates and the usual (virus malware scans ect) but no difference was made. So I tried a fresh install but this still seemed to make no difference. when I got this graphics glitch it wasn't just the graphics that went wrong since it seemed to also hang windows, forcing a manual reboot but with the same only to happen again on the next cold or warm boot. It did puzzle me since it seemed only to happen with anything graphical i.e windows or the Bios splash screen but did not seem to glitch out on Bios boot text or even through the windows install screens....
I was quite stuck to as what the cause was, although I had the feeling my graphics card was failing. I didn't have a spare to test and it was a late Saturday evening and had to wait until Monday morning for the stores to open..... (thank goodness i had my old Pentium 4 in the cupboard ) Well Monday morning arrived and with the frustration of having used my old P4 with its ultra slowness and block graphics from its old AGP ATI 9200SE I was very eager to dash off to the shops So I headed off to the local PC repair shop armed with my trusty iPhone loaded with the pictures shown below to ask for their professional advice and low and behold it was confirmed..... my poor BFG 9800GX2 was on its death bed (tip always follow warranties, register and keep your receipts) Now armed with my new and confirmed information I was happy enough to splash out on a new graphics card..... back home i fitted my nice new shiny Gigabyte 9800GT Silent Cell GV-N98TSL-1GI - GIGABYTE Product - Graphics Accelerator - Overview and as expected my PC was back up and running once again
I just installed Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 Intregated, and when I ran updates I failed at installing one update; 'KB938371'. I did some searching, and it seems this is only for those who wants to install SP1 via the Windows Update Service? If thats the case, why does it show? And if that is not the case, why doesnt it install? I've tried to reboot, then installing only that update. Downloading the update and executing, downloaded -> rebooted -> installing.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a 250 gig backup drive which is now full and my weekly backup is failing. the drive I am backing up shows only 133 gig used in properties why has the back up exceeded the total disk usage i am backing up. The file structure on backupo drive shows only one backup set dated 2007-08-04 within which are the weekly folders for my backups each of which contains a varying number of zip files. I am reluctant to just delete and start over but cannot see a way of managing backed up data.

View 9 Replies View RelatedOkay, I've heard about this horrible update and how it refuses to work, but I went around searching and found no one with the same problem as I did. So here is what happened:
1. I found it through updating, tried to update it, doesn't work (downloaded 9.5 mb, but failure on installation).
2. I manually downloaded from the Microsoft website, installed it, doesn't work (says install failed).
3. I closed everything, including anti-virus (Avast) and firewall. Installed it, doesn't work (same error message).
4. I reboot to try all the above steps again x2, doesn't work (still same error message).
my computer has been failing to enter and stay in standby mode. I had set the power button to initiate hibernate, sleep button to initiate sleep and close the lid to turn the computer off. All was working fine and settings are all as they should be, to my knowlege nothing has been changed but when I press the power button or try to enter hibernate through the start menu, the computer enters hibernate and then instantly starts back up. I am able to turn the competer off completely but no luck with hibernate. System restore is failing to work also so I am not able to set the system back to an earlier state.

Currently have a 250gb hd, partitioned (I think in-half) with Vista on a C partition and multiple users’ settings on D. The drive runs very hot; turn laptop on and watch the temp steadily climb (viewed via HD Tune) to 60celcius and then it shuts down. I am looking for the simplest way to ensure that I have all of my current programs (with licenses, activations, etc. working) and settings as in Vista migrated to Win 7. (primarily iTunes and media library).
1. If I use a disc cloning program like Macrium free to create a disc image of my current hd onto an external usb 1tb drive, then remove the current Vista hd, install the new blank internal hd and restore the disc image, will I have the Vista programs and settings copied and working on the new hd (in Vista)?
2. If so, can I then follow the Win 7 upgrade to achieve what I am looking for? I have seen others recommend against upgrade installs of Win 7, suggesting clean install and manually re-installing programs one by one. I am reluctant to do this; I probably have 200 programs and think it would be too difficult and time consuming.
3. Is there a better way to accomplish this?
4. Will a new hdd run cooler? At least enough so that it doesn’t crash and shut down, or is there some issue with the laptop besides the hd that could cause high temps?
