View 9 Replies View RelatedWindows 7 build 7000, which leaked less than two weeks ago, has a data corruption issue when playing back MP3s using Windows Media Player 12. The problem only happens under the following circumstances: the first few seconds of an MP3 file will be cut if the header of the mp3 file is larger than 16 kilobytes and if metadata is written to the file. The corruption will occur either when the user edits the metadata from inside WMP12 or Explorer, or if WMP12 is set to automatically fill in missing metadata using the online service.
The changes are irreversible, so if you plan on playing back your MP3s with WMP12, make sure to back up your music library. Microsoft is currently hard at work readying a Quick Fix Engineering (QFE) patch that will be distributed by Windows Update. A Microsoft employee has confirmed the bug and said that the company will be addressing the problem in the beta program. While many builds have leaked so far, most beta testers still haven't received builds to test. Warning: WMP12 beta could corrupt your MP3s

If I made more than $14,000 a week, this would be the last place I would park my ass every day. Alias has to scam little old ladies out of their hard earned money to purchase Ubuntu and everyone knows that Ubuntu is free but NOBODY wants it. Imagine, Ubuntu is free and is still on less than one percent of the desktops out there. That should tell you all you need to know about that piece of crap OS.

Download Vista SP2 Beta via Windows UpdateWritten by Ryan October 30th, 2008
If you like to stay on the bleeding edge of technology (and you’re running Vista) you may want to consider modifying two registry keys on your system so that you can participate in the Vista SP2 Beta program. To join the program all you have to do is download this batch file, and run it on your Vista machine as an administrator (right click - Run as administrator). Then just check for available Windows Updates (it may take 30 minutes or so for it to show up in the Windows Updates).
Think carefully whether you want to do this or not. There will likely be some bugs that could cause problems with your system, but at the very least it will cause Vista to expire on 4/2/2010 (or around then). Plus it will place the “Evaluation copy” message on your desktop wallpaper. You can always uninstall Vista SP2 to remove the evaluation message and expiration date, but it’s important to know what you’re getting into before you try to install it.
So what’s new in Vista SP2? Here’s a brief rundown that the Vista blog provided last week:Windows Vista SP2 adds Windows Search 4.0 for faster and improved relevancy in searches. Windows Vista SP2 contains the Bluetooth 2.1 Feature Pack supporting the most recent specification for Bluetooth Technology. Ability to record data on to Blu-Ray media natively in Windows Vista. Adds Windows Connect Now (WCN) to simplify Wi-Fi Configuration. Windows Vista SP2 enables the exFAT file system to support UTC timestamps, which allows correct file synchronization across time zones. Windows Vista SP2 is expected to be released in final form sometime in the first half of 2009. Judging by the expiration date of Vista SP2 Beta I’d say that sounds about right.

Got my motion eye working under Win7 64x. Link below for the drivers. I have the Vaio SZ650n/c, and all but a few keyboard hotkeys are working. The volume hotkeys work by default with win7. (maybe in hardware) Brightness is available by right-clicking the battery indicator (by clock) or by running "windows mobility center". For my SZ650, I had to install the SFEP and SPIC drivers to clear device manager. I could not find hot key drivers in 64x.

I'm gonna post this here because there is no Win7 usenet group (yet). Plain and simple: library search doesn't work for me at all. I've done the steps exactly to the tutorial: add ONE folder with subfolders (and I kept it to one tree for now) Then I tried searching, even for most primitive combinations like c*.* or c* but absolutely no search results. Does library search happen to be still broken in current public beta? (7000)
View 6 Replies View RelatedFYI The latest Windows Updates include Security Update KB941644 which is rated as Important; is in fact Critical. Windows Update provides only summary information and links; the reference security "Vulnerabilities in Windows TCP/IP Could Allow Remote Code Execution (941644)" clearly says this update is in fact a Critical update for Vista (and only Important or Moderate for other OS's). If anyone knows how to notify Microsoft of such errors directly please could they do so and/or let me know for future reference?
View 8 Replies View RelatedThis is a problem on a Windows Server, but this sort of thing is more of a general Windows problem.... so, onwards...One of our servers recently died and required restoring from backup, which went almost perfectly. The sole exception is that the server is now using Webdings/Wingdings for IE download dialogs and Windows security warning dialogs. And I have not the slightest idea why it's doing this. I've hit the search engines and help sites and haven't found anything, and the WindowsFonts folder is perfectly intact as far as I can tell.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhile everyone was expecting a public RC of the Wave 3 applications last week, a beta refresh made it out this week over at download.live.com. Windows Live Essentials, which refers to the suite of Windows Live client applications (as opposed to web services), consists of a long list of software: Messenger, Mail, Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Writer, Toolbar, Family Safety, and Office Outlook Connector (which is mysteriously missing in this release). This release includes two new additions, Office Live Add-in (which allows you to open and save documents directly to your online workspace) as well as Silverlight.

The quality assurance section at Redmond must be out to lunch permanently. IE 8 update makes IE show your IE explorer history and .wmv videos no longer automatically runs in media player. These are just a few quirks. Vista is the worst operating system since Windows ME. I use Vista Ultimate in one machine and it locks me out of many directories when using explorer.

How do I disable this security warning dialog box from popping up? I am confident my Avast! virus definitions will detect and intercept any virus or spyware attached to any url before the file is opened, so I really don't need this feature, it is annoying.
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy 'unexpected shutdowns' are random and occur -on average- once every session. They vary but usually go by two main scenarios: (1) Vista desktop and mouse cursor freezes - control/alt/delete and keyboard too - the only alternative is to push the PC restart button - or (2) the monitor goes black and Vista reboots on its own. What's usually happening when these scenarios occur? Well, I ought to keep a log ready to record these events. I'll soon have to try but as a student in a much earlier life - I took such bad lecture notes I could not read them after two class lectures. Here's what I can recall:1. I think most shutdowns have happened when either beginning to view a video or going to a new web page that pops up a streaming advertisement.
2. I recall one when I opened Windows Mail - but cannot say if I had clicked on anything yet or if mail was downloading at the time. So - it may not be Windows Mail but just the action of opening a new window? My Internet research indicates these 'unexpected shutdowns' have been frustrating Vista & earlier MS OS users for years. Rather surprisingly, I found no promising suggestions for troubleshooting or remedies - to date. For years the OS of my choice was W2K. If only Vista had W2K's reliability. I rarely - if ever- experienced such ongoing, unexpained W2K events.Perhaps I've missed some new info that addresses this issue - so that's the primary reason for this posting. Anything? I should add that upon rebooting after an unexpected shutdown - Vista asks if Safe Mode is desired during rebooting. I never benefited by going to Safe Mode - except that on the many occasions that I bypassed Safe Mode & choose normal rebooting - I would experience a variety of other issues soon afterwards. So - Safe Mode is probably the best way to go if one's patience permits - even if it avails few if any hints as to the specific shutdown
I've had a problem for a while now. Every time I open Windows Mail up, or the news groups, I get a message saying Windows mail isn't my default mail program, and asks if I want it to be. I click yes every time, but I will still get this message when I open Windows Mail again the next day. Everything's works OK after I click this message. No other errors or anything.

After installation of WindowsVistaSP2Beta-x86.exe, I've got a lettering on

My question is: How to remove this inscription?

Run Winver At Command Prompt And If You See The Following Next 2 The Build 6001 Number: V., Whereas V. = A 3 Digit Beta Build Number, Then You Are Running A Beta Version Of Windows Vista Service Pack One, Just FYI. If There Is No V. Next 2 The Build 6001, Then You Are Running Windows Vista SP1 RTM (RTM = Which Stands 4 Release To Manufacturing = Gold Or Final Release).
mu_windows_vista_sp2_beta_and_windows_server_2008_sp2_beta_symbols_x64_289911.iso file. I extracted it and i got like 5 files: ymbols.cab,advpack.dll,symbols.exe,symbols.inf,eula.txt
After that i ran symbols.exe and it create a symbols folder in C:WindowsSymbols with like 15 folders named "ACM,AX,CAB,etc." And after that nothing. I still see SP1 when i go in Vista properties! Any 1 know what's up with that ?

The above clearly implies that an updated version of GPMC is available for download. but I can't find it anywhere. Where is it?
