I found this interesting. It seems those of us who have the .NET framework add-on installed in Firefox will have trouble with this Windows Update. It's listed on my Updates as a security update for IE8- KB974455

View 6 Replies View RelatedIf you’re using Internet Explorer to read this it might be an idea to shut it down now and open up trusty old FireFox instead. Microsoft has today issued an alert to notify users of a critical security flaw in IE.7.0 that could allow hackers to take control of your computer and steal passwords. The company is apparently preparing an emergency patch to fix it but in the meantime simply requests that users remain ‘vigilant’ against the threat.Microsoft advisors actually ask that you don’t switch because they are trying to get it resolved as soon as possible.
Of course it couldn’t be seen to recommend else’s software, but this doesn’t show much consideration for people’s security concerns. Trend Micro security advisor Rick Ferguson is free from such restraint: “In this case, hackers found the hole before Microsoft did, this is never a good thing. What we’ve seen from the exploit so far is it stealing game passwords, but it’s inevitable that it will be adapted by criminals; it’s just a question of modifying the payload the trojan installs. I was on teh Firefox when it crashed randomly and when I started it back up it gave me a screen of the Vista Total Security thing. It's telling me that I need to register my version of this program and it's even giving me "Security ALERTS" of attacks. I know this was not legit so I proceeded to search for some way to get rid of it. I found one but it didn't work. It was probably connected to Firefox somehow so I deleted all my history and stuff from the browser and it still shows. Even after I close it with Task Manager, it still wants to ask me if I want to start Firefox or IE even if it's "infected" with a virus of some sort.
I took some pics as it came up while writing this thread. Also, BitDefender didn't seem to pick up this problem too so...Maybe I'll post some more pix so you can see. I got yet another "Notification" after posting..
So a few minuets ago firefox crashed and this window 'Vista security Tool" Came up telling me i had trojans key loggers etc etc. I couldn't recall ever having a program by that name on my comp so I google it and yup it's malware. I don't know how to get rid of it the instructions I found didn't make sense after the command>notpad>paste this text part. Please can anyone explain to me (like I'm two) how to remove this? Also can anyone tell me how 'dangerous' this program is and why it's bugging me?

I am running Vista Home premium, IE8, Firefox 3.5.3, AVG free and Zonealarm. On starting the PC there is no problem connecting to the internet through either browser or updating email (Windows Mail).
Problem...
Loss of internet connection via IE and/or Firefox whilst Mail can still send/receive. I have tried clearing the cache etc but the only thing that works is re-booting the laptop (Dell XPS 1330).
I mainly browse with IE but downloaded Firefox in case IE was the problem. One or the other will lose connection first then the other will follow.
i have a vista computer with bullguard pre installed.Whenever i start up,a balloon at the bottom of the screen tells me defender is out of date.However,it has always been impossible to update this or indeed download any windows updates since i bought the computer new a few months ago.

I receive a failed to install with a Code 66A. I have tried to find an explanation for the code to no avail. I finally checked and I have it on the list of installed updates a dozen times--but it still keeps appearing on my task bar asking to be installed. It's like a spell gone wrong. I am unable to install Security Vista update KB967723 (released very recently). When I attempt to install this patch I get the error code '80070020'.
I have downloaded this patch manually to install with no success. I have tried turning off my anti-virus (AVG) and windows firewall, with again no success. I keep getting the above error code.
I have also scanned my system with AVG, Windows defender, Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal & Ad-Aware (nil viruses etc...)
I am running Windows Vista 64bit edition on an Asus P5Q Deluxe motherboard, Intel Q9540 2.66gz Quadcore processor with 4gb RAM. My system has been running fine for the last year and just last night (27th June 2009) windows told me there were 3 updates that should be installed. I only noticed one of the update names which was Internet Explorer 8, the other 2 were security updates or something - really not sure though. The total of the downloaded updates was around 280mb.
Anyway... So I started installing the updates and walked away. When I came back there was a Terms & Agreement box for Internet Explorer 8 which I agreed to. Once that finished it came back to my desktop and said "windows needs to restart to configure the updates, please restart now."..........
Dell forward a bunch of updates from Microsoft yesterday. One was Security Update KB950759. After this was installed I couldn't access the internet. After I uninstalled it everything worked. Again today it was sent by Dell and installed-same thing, couldn't access internet until I uninstalled it.
View 7 Replies View RelatedA Dell Inspiron 1521 running Vista. There are several problems that all seem related but the most obvious one is that I can't update Vista. It is set up to update automatically. However, the "New Updates are Available" Icon appears on the task bar. If I click on it a window comes up and immediately disappears. If I hunt through the help menus until I find a link that says "Click to open Windows Update" the same thing happens: a window opens and immediately shuts. Similarly if I go to the control panel and click Windows Update nothing happens.
If I right click on it and choose Explore a window comes up but it is empty. The Default Programs icon is similarly unresponsive. If I click on the Windows Defender Icon and click on that and say to update, it returns error 0x8007045a. In addition to that, the backup/recovery thing returns errors. And when I try to run Ad-Aware it hangs. All of these failures are related to security
I have installed the security patch for IE and I did a disc check afterwards when I noticed , on completion that Windows had made alterations to the file system and that there was 8KB of bad sectors but the disc was clean ! Is this something that I should be worried about ?

I suppose I could uninstall VirtualPC since I have not been using it lately.
I should mention that it does not show up in the Control Panel | Progarams and Features Installed Updates list, though.
One other thing: VirtualPC is not supposed to work on Vista, but it does. In fact my son does development using it daily.

i have symantec antivirus corporate editon on my computer and all of the sudden for some odd reason the windows security center is telling me its not communitcating with it, its up to date with the virus list, does anyone have an oppionon on this antivirus,

I can install CoH from my DVD no problem. The game works. When I try to patch it, the game becomes corrupt. I can get patch 1.40 to install, after that it is a no go. I am completely frustrated. I must be having a hardware conflict or a corrupt install disc. I do a selective startup with only Windows services running. Each an every time I get this error message involving this file "ww2data.sga" and this code: Error 10104. Anyone else on Vista 64 experiencing this problem? View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter installing the patch the singleplayer is fine but it seems multiplayer is broken. If I start a server it loads the map but locks up straight away, also looks as though it's missing textures(random black spots) It even crashes from menus if I try and change my character as its also missing textures (all black) Ive tried uninstalling, reinstalling etc. Latest Catalyst drivers, card is a 4870. Running as admin, compatability mode etc make no difference, weird as it works fine with no patch, unfortuantely all the servers require 1.42.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a new system that has been working flawlessly til this patch. vista64 home premium, and the offending device is a microsoft usb wheelmouse optical.Now when ever I reboot it says new hardware found and driver instillation failed. I downloaded and installed intellipoint 6.1 for 64bit. and device manager shows no conflict and if i just clear out of the error boxes it works fine. Just everytime I reboot it does same thing again. It in fact, it cannot even recognize the device it is trying to install drivers for which is why i think it fails the driver update on reboot. I found out the hard way by telling vista to ignore the problem and it promptly disconnected the mouse altogether. I tried restoring to a point before the patch but it did not fix
the problem. One of the patches warned that it cannot be removed , so my guess is that is what is causing the problem.
