"hard Disk Drive" To "devices With Removable Storage"
Feb 3, 2009I installed an update today (USB composite device dc3d) and it changed my DVD RW drive from "hard disk drive" to "devices with removable storage" I think DVD RW drives are supposed to be classified as "devices with removable storage" I was wondering if this #1 Matters #2 is correct #3 will cause any problems. Any thoughts? What does your "my computer" view show your DVD RW drive type as.

Nov 29, 2008I just found this forum while looking for a solution to rename the "Removable Disk"s on Vista (I.e.: set them with a significant name). It looks great so I decided to subscribe and share my little knowledge about Vista. Well, it's actually mainly to ask you to share your knowledge with me. Here is my story: I have installed BitDefender Antivirus 2009 on my Vista Ultimate x64 and experience two big issues. I have reported those issues to the BitDefender's technical support but it's the weekend, so not yet any answer...
First, Firefox 3.0.4 crashes when I exit the browser if I keep the BitDefender Antiphishing add-on enabled. Everything goes fine if I disable it (from the Tools/Add-ons pane of Firefox, not from the AntiPhishing's right-click menu). I didn't see a lot of people complaining about this issue yet. Do you know something about that and maybe how to solve it? Next, the Bitdefender services stop to run when I wake up my PC (I.E.: after a "standby"). And the following message appears in the System event log : "The BitDefender Virus Shield service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s).". This one is really a big issue as I often use the Sleep mode instead of a real shutdown... meaning that I will often be without any protection when I wake up my PC... Did someone else experience the same issue? If I get answers from BitDefender (I hope I will... as I paid for the licence), I will post them here.
Safely Remove Hard Disk, Enable Write Cashing On The Disk?
Dec 28, 2008I have four (4) hard disks C: D: E: F: all are connected with sata cable and power cable.(of course) The F: is outside from the pc and connected via external SATA and power cable (like usb NOT usb) I know,with USB external hard disk i can use the safely remove option.
Is there any option to safely remove SATA hard disk without Shut Down the pc?
1) Start-Control Panel-Device Manager-Disk Drives-Right Click on hard disk-Properties-Policies-UntikDisable the Enable write cashing on the disk??
2) Start-Control Panel-Device Manager-Disk Drives-Right Click on hard disk-Disable??
Hard Disk Disappearing:How Do Regain Hard-earned Gigabytes
Oct 18, 20071. I have a 120GB hard disk that shows a capacity of 105GB. No problems there--I understand that there's a restore partition and GB vs a billion bytes
2. My hard disk says that 54GB is being used.
3. However when I drag and select all folders in my C: and click properties, I only see 28GB of usage. This leaves an unaccounted-for 26GB.
I've just run disk cleanup and cleaned up my shadow copies before verifying all this. Besides at a MAXIMUM, system restore should only eat 15% of my hard disk (18GB). What explains this loss? How do I fight back and regain my hard-earned gigabytes?

May 14, 2009Hi, new here. I have a sony vaio laptop that has been working perfectly up until a few days ago. I got a blue screen that said unmountable boot volume. I have a vista restore/repair disk but no sony restore disks.I'm not really sure if mine came with any? I used the vista disk and when i try to repair it it says no hard disk found as the error. Is there a way to get my computer to see the hard disk? I've tried using
the command prompt but a lot of things i've tried like chkdsk aren't working or i'm not sure what they mean.
Hard Disk Is Threshing
Aug 23, 2009I have had a problem where, apparently at random, my hard drive starts running and ties up my laptop to the point nothing will run. This lasts anywhere from 5 to 18 minutes. I have not been able to reproduce this on purpose, but yesterday it happened 3 times when I started either Outlook or Foxfire. Today it happened when I tried to sync my PDA. I have tried to turn off any indexing I can find, but no help. It doesn't always happen every day, but will do it several times a week. I am running on a Toshibe Satellite laptop with Vista Home Premium.
Why So Much Hard Disk Activity
Jun 6, 2008We have 2 identical Dell XPS desktop PCs, both with duo 2.66 processors, 240 GB hard drives, and running Vista Home Premium SP1.For a few years now we've been using a Linksys cable modem which has 4 Ethernet outlets (numbered 1-4) and paired antennas for Wireless-G. My PC was on Ethernet output 1 and my wife's PC was on a Wireless-G adapter. Recently my ISP doubled its speed to 16,000 kbps, but this seemed to have very little effect on my wife's Wireless speed. Rather than hassle with the wireless system, I uninstalled the Wireless-G adapter and ran a new Ethernet cable from output 2 to my wife's PC.The weird thing is that when both PCs are turned on and connected to
the Internet, my PC (Ethernet 1 output) seems to be continuallyaccessing the hard drive. While this is happening, the output 1 and output 2 LED's on the modem are madly flickering, as is the disk access light on the PC. No unusual hard disk activity is going on with the wife's PC. If I shut down either PC, this excessive hard disk activity doesn't take place and the output light (1 or 2) is steady. I've even tried leaving both systems totally inactive for many hours, other than an automatic check for mail every 5 minutes.
Every 1/2 hour or so I'd look in and see that the hard drive activity is still going on and the output lights are flickering. Whatever is going on is happening whether the PCs are active or idle. This has been going on for 3 days now, 16 hours a day, ever since I added the new Ethernet line!

I just finished reinstalling VISTA and a ton of programs, only to realize stupidly that I am running out of hard disk space because of all the downloading I am doing. It would be pure hell to have to reinstall everything again.
I want to replace my hard drive with one with double the capacity. Can I copy / backup / whatever the entire c drive on to an external drive, then copy the entire contents back on to the new disk drive? Apparently, I have to purchase a product such as Acronis True Image Family.
Formatting New Hard Disk Stops At 73%
Sep 3, 2009I've used this forum A LOT to find answers to the many problems I've had with my pc - now I have one that I can't find a solution for, so here I am posting! I'm trying to format a new Seagate Barracuda 1.5TB hdd but it won't go any further than 73%. Computer Management tells me that its still formatting (i.e. NO error message) but its been there for hours. I've tried formatting from the Vista installation cd during boot but it plain refused (I forget the error message), it won't even do a quick format in Computer Management. Is my drive humped?

Lost 45 GB Hard Disk Space

As for now one day I ran the diskeeper and some how I lost 45 GB of hard disk space for no real reason. After that I ran it again but it didnt help, I don???t know if it has to do with the diskeeper or maybe some other type of problem with the computer applications.

Feb 21, 2010Recnetly I noticed I had a 4th hard disk drive instead of 3. The strange thing is that I can't remember adding one.. I just got my 2 internal hard disk drives and 1 external hard disk. But now it shows 4. Also, when I try to open this 4th hard disk it gives an acces denied error message. Also, I'm unaible to scan the hard disk. Apr 7, 2010For some reason, I cannot see a 1TB hard disk in Vista Explorer. There are no relevant messages in the event logs etc. I can save data to it (via apps, word, excel, downloads etc). I just cannot see it in windows when I go to my computer. Also, can't seem to find anything pertinent on the web, lost about a vista drive not being seen by windows 7 (vice versa), but not what I am looking for. My concern is that if Windows won't display the drive, it may be going bad and it's only 6 months old. Any pointer(s)

Jan 5, 2010Am reinstalling Windows Vista after a virus infected my PC. I am reinstalling vista but after booting from DVD Vista does not recognise my SATA hard disk on the "Where do you want to install Windows?" screen. There are no issues with the hard disk and this happened once before but I can't remember how I solved this. My problem is the Vista installer not recognising my hard disk so I can install Vista. I have an Alienware pc with hitachi deskstar hard disk and asus a8n-sli deluxe motherboard. I have to reinstall as a virus has caused my windows explorer to malfunction and it also installed a trojan which stole my key. I have tried a couple of ASUS raid drivers via a usb hard disk with no luck. We can't find any appropriate hitachi drivers. I think this is related to the hard disk controller?

Am i changing the wrong folder? At the minute it just shows the folder grayed out with no access to it... you do not have permission message and its disk size shown is 0mb. Assuming this is becuase of a security issue.
I also bought a new hard disk and used the hp restore disks to re add windows vista on that hard disk. Now on that system i cannot access my old hard disk and i get a blue screen. If i attempt to only boot from my old hard disk i get a 0x0000007b (0x78d2524 oxc0000034 ox00000000 0x00000000) error
Any Software To Analyze Hard Disk Capacity?
Oct 18, 2009During the past few weeks I have faced the problem of lost some GBs from my Hard Disk! My Hard Disk's Capacity is 500 Gbs! However, when I add together Program Files, Documents and Settings and any other leftovers they don't reach even the amount of 350 Gbs! So, I reckon that I have hidden (lost) some Gbs in my Hard Disk! In the past I used a software that used to analyze my Hard Disk Data i.e. Program Files = 100 Gbs, My Documents = 120 Gbs etc... Does anybody knows any software to do this and to recover the lost data (capacity) if possible!
