Hey again I???m here as a new user of vista and Im going trough a bunch of problems. As for now one day I ran the diskeeper and some how I lost 45 GB of hard disk space for no real reason. After that I ran it again but it didnt help, I don???t know if it has to do with the diskeeper or maybe some other type of problem with the computer applications.
View 9 Repliesi reformatted my whole c drive and then clean installed vista ultimate onto it and at start i had 268Gb out of 274Gb. now its gone to 243Gb and i've only installed a couple of programs and when i highlight everything in the c drive it says its 7.38GB. I've Defragged it a lot of times and the space keeps on going down.
View 8 Replies View RelatedSince a couple months ago, roughly July of last year, I've been losing disk space on my C drive even when I haven't downloaded a single byte or installed any programs. Though this might sound crazy, I've looked for viruses like a detective, in hopes that it's what's causing this. But I don't have a virus, and I'm down to 16.4 GB out of a 232 GB HDD. I'm going crazy, because since then, I've had a 32 GB average of anything on that drive, and I had a couple games and programs on there even with that in there. In 3 weeks, I've been losing at least 3 GB.
-Deleting every restore point/shadow copy except the most recent
-Overlooked the winsxs folder, it's only 8.35 GB, I can live with that.
-Downloaded TreeSize, found that a folder called [Files], taking up 201,663 MB: should I delete this file? The owner is called 'TrustedInstaller' according to TreeSize.
I am not sure why but for some reason my c drive is displaying incorrect information. When I view the total space for C: from "My Computer" it displays 21.3 GB of 133GB used. However, when I go into my c drive select all files and folders, right click and select properties, the most space being used in C is 30GB. For some reason my system restores have all been lost. I do not have a vista install disk, but I do have the factory restore that I made upon purchase of my laptop.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI made a mistake and created a RAID0 of my 2 drives. Since the drives were not the same size I lost disk space on the larger one. Can I make a full system backup, remove the RAID0 defenitions from the drives in BOIS and do a full system restore and that way get rid of the RAID0, or will the restore process require RAID0 again?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a total of around 196 GB of hard disk space in my c:// drive and no data in it at all instead of my operating system(vista) and other installation files. every 1 or 2 days, my free hard disk space on this drive becomes less even though i am not saving anything at all on this drive, The total of all the files including all hidden system file is also different(Less) than the total total used space on my hard-disk. I have had a disk cleanup, cleaned internet files and cookies.The automatic file back up system in system tools is also turned off. The problem has already consumed nearly 15 - 17 gb of my hard disk space and still continuing to do so as i keep using my computer,.

The reason I have come to this site is my computer presented me with a choice, it said that I should back up my hard drive, to ensure that I wouldn't lose any info in the event of a breakdown. View 9 Replies View RelatedI would like to get vista to use the login style used in Win 2000 ... ctrl+alt+del gives a login box in which to enter the user name and password.
Win XP Pro had this option also, but, it's default was like vista (pictures showing all users).
I have been able to get the ctrl+alt+del part but instead of the login box I still get pictures.
I am a relatively unexperienced windows vista user using windows home premium at 32 bit on an acer aspire 6920 notebook. I noticed that occassionaly my disk space would drop dramatically without me doing anything. 100s of mbs would just disappear for no reason, so probably being stupid i decided to run the disk fragmenter to try and fix the problem. BUT to my horror i was shocked to find that the disk fragmenter began to eat up my hard disk space big style. I went from 79.7GB to 72.5GB in just over an hour. What the hell happened and can it be fixed? can i get my disk space back? i thought the disk fragmenter was supposed to help your computer not rob it. does anyone else have this problem and can someone please help me? im kinda desparate, i cant believe it.

My problem is that one of the partitions is saying it has used 22.95 gb but it hasnt - there isnt anything on it. I've even checked for hidden files and other than the system volumn files there is nothing there. Im really stumped Hoping someone can throw some light on it for me

1. I have a 120GB hard disk that shows a capacity of 105GB. No problems there--I understand that there's a restore partition and GB vs a billion bytes
2. My hard disk says that 54GB is being used.
3. However when I drag and select all folders in my C: and click properties, I only see 28GB of usage. This leaves an unaccounted-for 26GB.
I've just run disk cleanup and cleaned up my shadow copies before verifying all this. Besides at a MAXIMUM, system restore should only eat 15% of my hard disk (18GB). What explains this loss? How do I fight back and regain my hard-earned gigabytes?
I have a Fujitsu Siemens laptop with 120GB hard drive. My problem is, there is only 78.2GB space left on it. I have hardly anything on it really so I am wondering where is has all gone. I have turned off the system restore and then turned it back on. I have run CCleaner, defragmented, done disk cleanup, so I dont know what to do next. I ran TreeSize and according to that there is 13,243.3MB taken up in the Windows folder and 10,099.7MB taken up in the Users folder, all the rest of the folder dont have that much in. Can anyone shed any light on this problem and tell me if I can safely delete any of these files to free up some disk space.

View 7 Replies View Relatedlast week i was recoding some video's using Nero's Recode program (sidenote worked great) but now my 100 gig laptop on has 2 gigs of space left from the original 60 gigs free space. where did it go?? the video files have been deleted, i've used the disc clean-up program to remove the temp files and used the registry to enable Pagefiles removeal from another post of this forum. that clean up some on the space i now have 20gigs free space but i still am missing 40 more gigs that i have before i starting the recodeing.
in my disk de-fragmenter is shows me that i have a huge "yellow" portion of paging files still left and by just guessing it should be that extra 40 gigs just by seeing the size of the "yellow" bar.
how do i get rid of these "paging files" and how do i reclaim my lost space?
So i just got my laptop its a compaq presario and it came with 138gigs. Initially it came with around 119gigs and after awhile i started to see that it started to decrease like around a gig aday or when i left it on to long. I took it in and geek squad and they said i had a virus but i restored it and nothing on my trendmirco has detected anything. I run proccess explorer and i cant see anything weird that is poping up using alot of CPU and now after i restored it twice i think its slowly doing it again but i heard that Vista uses alot of memory stored in cache called superfetch is this the reason why i see the decrease when im doing something on the system or what is serverpack 2 the guy kept telling me that this could be the case also. Please help im trying to understand all of this

After Vista crashed, from not enough space on the hard drive ( Started up then crashed once it got to the Windows loading screen with auroa picture, by crash i mean self restart) So next i tried to reinstall vista via DVD command prompt, using Partdisk format C: took about 20 mins and i noticed it was still on 2% so i thought it had frozen so i closed it down to just do a Quick format, format C:.......

But I'm a poor college student and so got the 64GB one, which only has 58GB of space (because Lenovo put something on a separate partition which they say I cannot get rid of). The only thing installed is WinVist and MS Office 2007 (and McAfee and other progrms that came with the PC which weren't taking up much space).
Those two programs took up 30GB of space. Yesterday, some Windows backup thing started to run and said "There isn't enough room on this drive to do the backup, do you want to do it anyway? (I'm paraphrasing)". Since I like having things backed up, I said Yes anyway (and to see what happened). Now I have 1 GB free on my drive. Lenovo won't help me with Windows because that's "a configuration issue" and they don't do that. How do I get rid of this backup and get at least 20GB back? Then, how can I configure Windows and Office to take up less disk space?
It seems like Lenovo sold me a PC with a disk drive that doesn't have enough space to operate correctly. And they won't help me resolve the problem. Also, it seems that it is not as easy to separate your data in WinVista as magazine articles would have you believe. I tried configuring it so my "Documents" was on another external drive, but that proved too difficult.

I have noticed that during the course of an average week, the amount of available disk space on both my C: and D: drives varies by up to 15GB even though no significant activity in the form of manipulating files or installing programs is taking place. It might be 20GB available one night and then magically it's up to 35GB in the morning. The pattern is usually that it will reach a high and then gradually do down each day until it jumps back to the maximum all of a sudden. What could be causing this? I do not have System Protection turned on so the space is not being used for System Restore. The C: and D: "drives" are actually partitions on the same physical disk.

Since the "D" drive is FULL, I have NEVER been able to do a full backup. I have not saved anything to the D drive. A friend suggested one of my 'spy security' programs had saved data there. I had 'SpyBot' but uninstalled it. I still have WeBroot Spy Sweeper, Adaware, and my Norton Anti-Virus running. Is there a setting that will allow an overwrite of the data in the D drive?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI run a VMware setup with Vista (64-bit) Home Premium as the Host system, and Vista (32-bit) Home Premium as the guest system. Although I have only 16 GB devoted to the guest system, at one point recently I was only using not quite half of that space. Now, when I click on Computer, I am finding that there is literally no free space. If I delete some software, this freed up space gets consumed also.
How do I go about finding what it is that is clogging this allocated space? The only changes that I have made to the guest system is the addition of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware software.

I keep getting the low disc space on C: error message, and when I click on My Computer, it says I only have 189 MB of free space on the C: drive. However, when I click on the C drive, highlight all the folders, and click Properties, it says I am using 26 GB of space next to "size on disk". I tried to solve this problem about a week ago by moving 30 gigs of music to an external hard drive, but the C drive has filled up again even though I have not added anything to the C drive. The hard drive in question is a 1 Tb hdd and was working fine in XP as were the other HDD's. When I installed Vista, all the other disk's worked fine except for this one. I have gone into Computer Management and it shows the drive as having 859 Gb of unallocated space that I cannot format. I am unable to create a New Simple Volume or any other volume types for this drive.
