Running Few Programs Computer Freeze

Oct 13, 2009

Just bought a brand new gateway nv52 with vista home premium x64 and it is constantly crashing like several times a day. I'll be running just a few programs like firefox and windows media player or word processor and the computer will freeze, the sound will take whatever the last little note that came out and stutter repeat it several times and then the entire screen will go completely blank to a dark blue screen.

Programs Began To Freeze

Mar 23, 2009

I have a custom built computer (specs are listed on my profile). When my computer was first rebuilt, the previous HD was left in as a slave for storage. However, at that time it wasn't reformatted and the old OS (Win 2K) was still on it. Vista ran fine at first but I downloaded some programs and then it began giving me problems. Programs began to freeze (especially IE and Firefox both) and I had to shut it off.

The problem escalated until finally, a friend of mine loaded Ubuntu 8.1 on it. Linux ran fine, but at bootup, recognized not only Vista but Win2K as an installed OS. Vista would no longer boot up. After attempting to repair using the Vista disk, (and reinstalling just Vista but leaving Linux), I had no choice but reformat and reinstall Vista.

Vista didn't install correctly on this attempt, and I kept getting an error at bootup. Winload.exe was either missing or corrupt. I tried repairing but it didn't help. Finally I reformatted BOTH the slave and master HD and reinstalled Vista on the master. Everything seemed fine until I began to load my drivers back on, and reinstall my software (printer software, Trillian, Tax prep software, Firefox). Everything began to freeze up again, not just the browser.

I am at my wit's end. Is 4GB of memory not enough? Is this the root of the problem? Or is it something deeper? If I'd gotten a virus, would a format have gotten rid of it? None of my "computer geek" friends (said with the utmost respect) can offer a solution, and I don't really have money to burn to let the Geek Squad do exploratory surgery on it.

Premium 64bit: Programs Freeze Up

Nov 11, 2008

I recently installed 64bit premium on my XPS 420. I am having tons of problems and cannot find solutions. If I leave my computer on and idle for about 4 hours (or any length of time)it goes to a standby..normal. but when get back on it, everything is screwy. If I plug in a flash drive it won't read it. If i try to turn off the computer or restart it, it dosnt shut down, it just goes to the screen where it says its shutting down but never shuts down. Programs act funny and freeze up a lot.

Running 32 Bit Programs In 64 Bit?

May 8, 2009

I am considering a purchase of a new PC running Windows Vista 64 bit. I have some questions.

Will some of my 32 bit programs run on Vista 64 bit? I am thinking about Firefox 3 and Thunderbird 2 especially. Does Vista 64 have a compatibility mode where I can run 32 bit applications? If yes, does the compatibility mode actually work?

I am planning on some multimedia work recording music and video. I know that I need a second hard drive. One for the OS and one to record to. The model of PC that I am considering has a RAID configuration using two hard drives. How would these drives appear to me in Vista 64 bit? As one drive? As two? If it is one drive, can I set a partition to have the two drives I need? If so, are partitions difficult to setup?

What are your opinions on the 64 bit system? Is this the future and eventually everything will be going 64 bit, or will it fade out as a good idea that never happened? The PC I am looking at is expensive and I wish to know if it will be useful for a long time.

Is Vista 64 going to be the current OS and more and more companies will be supporting it? Is Vista going to be around for a long time? I am seeing buzz about Windows 7. When would Windows 7 be out and would it require 64 bit?

Running Certain Programs, No Graphics

I'm having an issue when i try and run certain applications, tried running the 2 spore prototypes, a couple of online games and also (a little more esoteric here) a piece of software designed for scanning through 3d Xrays! (dads a dentist with some cool tech). In all cases when i try to run them a window opens for the program but theres no graphics inside. I dont mean its like white blank, i mean its just see through to the desktop.

Aug 15, 2009

My (stock speed) Intel Q9550 @2.83Ghz is running at temps of 105 degrees Celcius or 221 degrees farenheight (for those not from my country) I dont think this is normal, am i right? I think this is the sole reason for my constant computer freezes? Im guessing Im right and I have to get a new CPU fan/heatsink and some top quality thermal paste. I want the absolute best fan solution available with the best thermal paste known...

P2p Causing Computer Freeze

Oct 7, 2008

I have successfully been using p2p connections on my previous Windows Vista 32 setup on my laptop, however, since I bought this desktop with 64 bit windows my computer continually locks as I open p2p connections. Included programs which cause the lock are, Azureus, Blizzard Downloader, and Bit Torrent. I believe this may be a port issue. Not sure however. Has anyone had this issue with 64 bit Vista?

The freeze is almost instant as the program opens. Within 5 seconds of opening any of the above programs the comptuer locks/freezes requiring a restart as I can do nothing else. This is why I suspect a port problem; it seems as the firewall opens the p2p port, the computer instantly freezes.

64-bit Troubles Make Computer Freeze

May 19, 2008

Hey everyone. I just subscribed to these forums because I was hoping to get some advice about what to do. My tech knowledge is pretty limited, so I will try to explain the problems to the best of my ability.

I'm running Vista Home Premium x64. At least 4-5 times a day my computer completely freezes up and will remain that way until I manually restart it. I've looked at the problem reports and solutions and there seems to be 2 main problems. Most of the errors are under the group called "windows." the Problem event name states there was a blue screen error. I've heard of the blue screen error, but I thought it was odd that my screen didn't actually turn blue. The other problems are under the group "windows explorer." The error name there is "AppHangB1." I have no idea what that means.

Windows Mail + Computer Freeze

May 27, 2008

When I attempt to open Windows Mail for the first time each day the splash screen appears and then, 9 times out of 10, my computer freezes. This only happens the first time each day. It opens instantly for the remainder of the day. I am forced to power off and reboot which can happen 1 to 3 times before Windows Mail will open. I am running Vista with SP1. I have not installed anything new and no settings have been changed.

Vista Freeze- Cannot Turn Off Computer

Jan 2, 2008

Just got a new HP Pavilion d6500t with installed Vista Ultimate x64. Has been tough going, but was scraping by until today. I installed Quickbooks (via download) and transferred my data files from my old pc to the new pc. Things seemed fine. then BAM!

The screen became "jumpy" and I received a number of error messages. Could not bring up Task Manager, so I had to shut down the pc manually (turned it off). Reboot involved a system check because of the manual shut-down. System check was fine...but, now my pc is frozen on a black screen with the hp logo in the middle. My choices are the usual: Press <ESC> to enable startup message, <F1> to enter System information...etc. I cannot go ANYWHERE from here. The F-keys are not responding AND I cannot even manually shut off the pc! I am a total novice when it comes to pc systems.

Manual Reboot After Freeze Harm Computer?

Periodically, my Vista SP1 PC freezes up. The mouse vanishes unless you move to to the bottom of the screen where the taskbar is -- and you'll see a spinning blue circle - but no keys or clicks work. Here's the question. When this happens, does manually restarting by holding down the power button damage the computer or performance or reliability of Vista?

Window Popping Up With 'viruses' Programs Stopped Running

Mar 30, 2010

A few months ago, I had that lovely virus called Antivirus 2010. It got so bad that eventually, whenever I turned my Intel Pentium laptop on, the screen would just be black and there would be nothing except the virus window popping up with all the 'viruses' I had on my computer. Of course, a few other programs stopped running normally. The dock and widgets were gone. I had to create associations, which I never succeeded at, and this was all becoming way too frustrating. But I got by...

Last night, I decided to connect my HDMI cord to the laptop and watch a few episodes of Lost with my friends. Now, the HDMI button ('F8') wasn't working properly after my little mishap a few months earlier. When I pressed it, the usual, nice little pictures of different laptop-tv settings did not appear. Instead, I tried FN+ALT+F8. This seemed to work. But after we finished, I couldn't get the screen to return to normal again. It's all fuzzy and big, as if I was still connected to the tv.

** I tried personlization, and fizing screen resolution and stuff. It made things a little better, but the screen STILL isn't the same. Funny thing though. When I use print screen, the screen looks NORMAL. This morning, I rebooted my laptop. (Probably the stupidest thing I've ever done) I thought everything would be back to normal, but the screen is still the same, the nice little extras about Vista I was missing before have not returned, and my internet connection is gone.

Radomly Locks Up When Running Video Or Audio Programs

Nov 19, 2009

Does anyone have any idea of any fix for this. The systems totally locks up randomly when running a web video and or audio program and it seems to be in Media Player, iTunes and other programs as well. I am running Vista home basic on this machine but it does the same thing on my HP running Vista Ultimate as well. I go back into the error messages in the application, systems, and performance logs and can not find any suggestions on what the problem could possible be. I have looked through Blogs and find that this is happening on a variety of machines and configurations and versions of Vista and the only suggestion was to work in the config.msc utility and try turning off non Microsoft services that you can.

Computer Running Too SLOW

May 11, 2008

i've been running my computer pretty much without problems. Recently I have noticed a real slow down in performance. I currently have Spybot S&D, and the purchased version of AVG installed. Thinking that perhaps one of these programs may be causing some kind of problem, I disabled both of them, but to no avail.

I run spyware searches and virus searches daily, which never really show up any thing of concern. I delete cookies etc on a daily basis too. My computer doesnt need defragged.
Could anyone give me any ideas as to what could be slowing it down so much.I tried to access my company site to process some work stuff and it took forever and a day to load what would normally be a couple of seconds. My computer is only about 8 months old, Intel Core Duo CPU, Memory 2047MB, 32 Bit O.S, with a Windows experience Index rating of 5.5.

Screen Goes Black, Computer Keeps Running

My particular problem isn't that something wakes the computer back up (that problem was actually fixed using your methods), but rather that my screen goes black and my computer keeps running. My previous computer used sleep mode fine, but I just got a new motherboard (Asus P5N-D), case, and processor (Intel Core 2 Quad), so it's no mystery why it doesn't work anymore, I just can't figure out how to restore the option.

Microsoft Certified In Order To Keep Computer Running

Apr 14, 2008

why Microsoft would release a product knowing that there are unresolved issues with the product? What is the point of doing Beta testing if you are not going to find all the bugs, fix them and then release the product? I'm not trying to be flippant(sp?) here. This is a serious question. With all the money, man/woman power and brain power available to Microsoft for R&D, why is it so hard to put out a product that works from the word go? I don't want to become Microsoft certified in order to keep my computer running. I shouldn't have to fool with my computers registry so that I can install an update to fix a problem that they knew about before they sold it to me. Come on Bill. I thought the whole purpose of technology advancing was to make our life easier. I want to insert disk and push play. I'm not talking about dumbing things down. I'm talking about Microsoft developing their products, making sure they work and then selling them to us. Interesting concept

Slow Boot Time Computer Running Ultimate X64

For a new computer with new hardware, this seems unreasonable as many users report boot times between 30-60 seconds. What could be wrong with my computer? On the vista loading screen with the green bar, it goes through about 22 cycles.

Computer Running Fast/loud After Vista Reinstall

May 7, 2010

I've had some trouble with my system - Dell XPS 630I - hibernation problems, not being able to set or go back to a Restore Point, etc. So I've had a Microsoft tech help me solve my problems in the last few weeks, and after finally coming to the 'Reinstall Vista' as the only solution, I reinstalled yesterday. I have not yet installed any drivers or Dell software, but, obviously, did get my internet capability back.

I'm not worried about getting my system back to normal working order eventually, but one thing has me concerned: My system is running so loud and fast constantly. Previously, when I turned my computer on, during the startup phase, it ran like this (loud and fast, noisy) until it reached the black screen with the colorful, Vista circle in the middle, at which point it quieted down completely and continued with the Windows startup. Does anyone know what it is that has my computer sound like its running so fast, and sounding so loud constantly. Is it going to be one of the system drivers that I will eventually load that will 'calm' my system down??

Power Outage During Computer Wake-up Stops 32-bit Processes From Running

Apr 16, 2009

Recently, while taking my Vista x64 Ultimate computer out of sleep mode, a power outage occurred. When I turned my computer back on, no 32 bit applications run - not even the operating system's own services such as Windows Installer will run if they are 32-bit.

I tried typing 'firefox' in the Task Manager to see what happened. The process appeared for a moment, then was instantly killed. I don't know why. The Windows event log has been unhelpful in diagnosing the problem.

I also looked at Task manager at startup, and saw that all the * 32 processes were dying moments after Vista boots and show the desktop.

I have tried system restore, nothing worked. I tried to auto-repair my system in the windows recovery console, that didn't work either. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem short of simply reinstalling the OS, which I am reticent to do? If so, what should I do?
