I have a custom built computer (specs are listed on my profile). When my computer was first rebuilt, the previous HD was left in as a slave for storage. However, at that time it wasn't reformatted and the old OS (Win 2K) was still on it. Vista ran fine at first but I downloaded some programs and then it began giving me problems. Programs began to freeze (especially IE and Firefox both) and I had to shut it off.
The problem escalated until finally, a friend of mine loaded Ubuntu 8.1 on it. Linux ran fine, but at bootup, recognized not only Vista but Win2K as an installed OS. Vista would no longer boot up. After attempting to repair using the Vista disk, (and reinstalling just Vista but leaving Linux), I had no choice but reformat and reinstall Vista.
Vista didn't install correctly on this attempt, and I kept getting an error at bootup. Winload.exe was either missing or corrupt. I tried repairing but it didn't help. Finally I reformatted BOTH the slave and master HD and reinstalled Vista on the master. Everything seemed fine until I began to load my drivers back on, and reinstall my software (printer software, Trillian, Tax prep software, Firefox). Everything began to freeze up again, not just the browser.
I am at my wit's end. Is 4GB of memory not enough? Is this the root of the problem? Or is it something deeper? If I'd gotten a virus, would a format have gotten rid of it? None of my "computer geek" friends (said with the utmost respect) can offer a solution, and I don't really have money to burn to let the Geek Squad do exploratory surgery on it.
I recently installed 64bit premium on my XPS 420. I am having tons of problems and cannot find solutions. If I leave my computer on and idle for about 4 hours (or any length of time)it goes to a standby..normal. but when get back on it, everything is screwy. If I plug in a flash drive it won't read it. If i try to turn off the computer or restart it, it dosnt shut down, it just goes to the screen where it says its shutting down but never shuts down. Programs act funny and freeze up a lot.
Just bought a brand new gateway nv52 with vista home premium x64 and it is constantly crashing like several times a day. I'll be running just a few programs like firefox and windows media player or word processor and the computer will freeze, the sound will take whatever the last little note that came out and stutter repeat it several times and then the entire screen will go completely blank to a dark blue screen.
I have a Dell windows vista 32bit business ed laptop. the other morning, when I switched it on I noticed it began booting then stopped, looking at the plug I noticed it wasn't in all the way so I slammed it back in with my foot and continued to re-boot the laptop. It booted requesting to do a chkdsk scan, fair enough I thought, I let it continue and it crashed on repairing an index.
It rebooted a second time with an option to load a 'repair' option, loaded this and one of the options in the list were to 'repair the boot files'. jolly good.... 13 hours later, it was still proceeding, but the HD light was at a constant on-off slow flicker, which it had been for the past 12 hours. Resorting to the last option, I entered the vista disk and decided to try a repair from there, same issue as before, so Now i decided to format the drive and start again. The vista boot disk just said it couldn't format the drive, so i decided to install windows over the top!. It said it couldn't do that either! What options do I have now? The laptop is absolutely useless, does it sound like a FUBAR'd hard drive? if it does, I think a swift call to dell is in order, or can anyone think of any fixes?
I do not want to see any of the programs at the top of the list of All Programs (especially Internet Explorer). I just want to see the program folders listed, preferably sorted by newest or most recently modified first, by alphabetically would be OK. How to get rid of the 8 programs shown in here? Thanks.
Ive been having a few problems with uninstalling some programs via the add/remove programs tool. For example I have been trying to uninstall Itunes and everytime I do Windows installer says it is preparing to remove and then it stops and a window come up that says "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation." and then another one says I do not have sufficient access to uninstall Itunes and to please contact system administrator.
So I spoke to a friend how recommended this forum subject and I followed the Take Ownership steps a few times but to no avail it still does the same thing. I can't update Itunes untill this one is uninstalled!!!!!
I use Vista 32 Ultimate and I have this problem during the startup of Windows: The UAC control stops 2 programs and I'm not able to let these programs load with UAC control active. Tried everything also in Windows defender but no success. I must always confirm and let run these programs clicking on the UAC block tray icon that appear during the load of these 2 programs. Someone tell me that these programs blocked by UAC must be updated from the developers to pass the UAC.
when i go to start, all programs, all my folders/programs show up, but then i noticed that theres a "programs" folder within the list, and when i click that, it shows all the same folders/programs that are in the "all programs" list. but then some of the folders within the ones in the 'all programs" list, they are empty, but they show up in the programs folder in the list. i dont know how this happened and i just wanted to know how to fix this issue.
This morning, I started my computer, logged on and went on the Start Menu to access Microsoft Office programs. But when I went on the 'All Programs' menu, there were no programs listed! I really mean NO PROGRAMS AT ALL. This includes Microsoft Office folder and every other software and program i have got!.
I just got my new computer with Vista Home Premium x64, from Windows Professional XP. Installed programs are not showing up at Start/All Programs. Some are in directory C: Programs or Program Files (x86) and still dont't show up.
A friend's Vista computer started booting only as far as the round Vista logo then froze. I took the PC home and using my keyboard, mouse and monitor did some maintenance, upped the memory etc and took it back. It still froze at the logo. I replaced the keyboard and mouse and monitor one by one to no avail. Took everything home and it worked as a system, but at his house - still freezes. Is this an electrical problem - if so how could I find out? Their other computer works fine.
I'm new here and could use some help, if everyone is willing to help me. Also sorry if someone had already did post on this issue, i've tried searching the forums and couldn't find anythign so i thought i would try making a post.
I had recently bought a new computer that had came with Windows Vista Home Premium installed on it. I have the computer for maybe about 1-3 weeks, it was doing just fine for what i was wanting it to do. But the past 2 days i would go turn on the computer enter my Password and it would just Hang/Freeze on the welcome screen. I have no problem at all booting up into SafeMode, and can usualy get into my account after having 30 or so attempts if lucky. Its just really frustrating and could some help if possible.
Heres the computer from what i can remember off the top of my head, if it would help any.
i have a Sony Vaoi VGN-NS11J im not sure if its a 32-bit or 62-bit. one day i was browseing facebook when my computer froze after leaving it for like 30 mins it was still frozen so i had to turn it off by the button and i know that is bad. when i tried to turn it on again it just gave me the options safe mode safe mode with networking and the other safe mode and start windows normally so i just started normally it gets past the vaoi screen and then on the microsoft windows screen it just keeps loading for like 10 minutes then it restarts then it gave me new options start windows normally or launch startup repair so i launch startup repair which takes like 40 minutes just to get to the actually repair place then it gives me no operating system to repair its just blank ive tried all the booting options start from last known good boot or something like that safe mode wont work and when i disable restart when startup fails i get the blue screen of death it gives me this message. A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer
I’ve been playing on my computer for a while and have noticed that whenever I play my games, my computer will freeze and hang up after about a couple minutes of playing into the game. The screen will freeze and whatever sound was playing will loop in the background. I cannot ctrl alt del out of the game and my computer requires a hard restart whenever this happens. I have been looking on some forums about this problem with games freezing and supposedly the fix was swapping the different RAM modules. I tried doing that but it still keeps freezing after playing for a bit. I then used Riva Tuner to turn up the fan on my graphics card to 100% but that did not help either. I have the latest drivers for Vista x64 too. I also tried playing the games in Windows XP (I am running both Vista and XP on my system) but the same thing happens. I then started to think if the 500W power supply was too low so we got a new 650W PSU, but haven’t put it in yet.
That's the spec's of my computer, we have the same computer so it should be the same, but I don't know since her's keeps freezing :P So, when she boots up her PC, it works but when you try to do something it freezes. It's really annoying and I have been trying to fix it for so darn long! (I know how to fix XP's and some Vista problems, but not this! ) So, how can I fix this, I know it's not a display driver or sound driver (uninstalled both, reinstalled).
I am getting tired of having to restart IE7. What is going on with this freezing problem. It started about three or four weeks ago, and hasn't stopped. Seems everytime I access the internet the system freezes up (at least two or three times, each time). I am now running it without any add-ons, and still have the same problem.
the problem is that it starts ok, goes in windows, and then in maximum 5 minutes it freezes. I have to reset the computer, and then it will go for another 30-40 minutes, when i get a blue screen, telling me something about hardware problems. then it restarts and works fine.
I just installed Vista x64 yesterday on my system that I've been running 32bit on, ever since I have been having about 30 seconds of lag whenever I open a program or try to alt tab out of Warhammer Online. I would have posted this in the gaming section but it happens with most if not all of my programs. I have updated my video driver and directx. I have also disabled user account control, and installed SP2.
Why does Bill G viciously freezes minesweeper each time I'm almost hitting a new all time record? Is is to prevent my name to be in gold letters on the hall of fame? The SP1 does nothing
i have a computer that has worked fine for almost two years. now my computer wont allow me to download any exe files or save them to any location also the desktop is constantly freezing . i tried the msconfig clean boot and it still happens so what next ?????
I recently purchased (around Christmas) a new computer, with Vista pre-installed on it. However, as of today, my computer turns on, starts-up fine, and then won't load any programs, and sub-sequently locks up when I try to click on anything. Nothing has changed since today and yesterday, so I'm looking for some practical solutions.
I have been having some late problems with the PC Game called Pure. Everytime when I try to start to play ingame, it freezes and I have to exit it. I am running on a ATI Radeon HD 4650 graphics card. I think that my graphics card isn't the problem here ...
When I open my E-Mail and click on Delete to erase the E-Mail, the word delete stays on the screen until I shut the computer down. The same thing happens when I play games. If I click on the Undo button, undo stays on the screen until I shut down the computer. What could be the problem?
I've been having problems with my laptop for quite some time now. If I start it up normally, it always freezes after some time. It won't matter if I try to do something during that time or not. Also if I just open up a game straight up, it will work just fine, but when I exit it, I can't open anything new. It will just show that loading circle and nothing will happen. It works fine in safe mode. I have been searching everywhere for a fix, so now I'm trying my luck here. I'll try to give you some information here. I don't know what you will need though.
I got this nice new computer for christmas to replace our old crappy laptop but when i game, periodically it will freeze the game for no particular reason this happens on all the online games i play such as: counter-strike(and source), Starcraft, warrock, soldier front, and others
i know for a fact that it is not my internet is not the problem it is very good comcast high speed and i used the same modem on the laptop, where it worked smoothly plus it is not a memory problem. for not only does it have 4 GB of memory, it still lags even when i close all programs, including windows live and AVG in the bottom bar. i can really only assume it is a problem with vista. its sad though, i knew xp like the back of my hand but with vista im near clueless XD
My (stock speed) Intel Q9550 @2.83Ghz is running at temps of 105 degrees Celcius or 221 degrees farenheight (for those not from my country) I dont think this is normal, am i right? I think this is the sole reason for my constant computer freezes? Im guessing Im right and I have to get a new CPU fan/heatsink and some top quality thermal paste. I want the absolute best fan solution available with the best thermal paste known...
My computer freezes and reboots when I surf the web. I use Firefox, Internet Explorer just doesn't cut it for me. My Windows is fully up to date. It also happens when I use Azureus.
Solution (for whomever may have stumbled upon this page through Google): My computer was freezing on a random basis because I used Acronis Disk Director Suite to partition my hard drive (issues with Vista compatibility?). Anyway, I had to write 0's to my hard drive (using KillDisc, i.e. deleting my entire hard drive and reinstalling everything) and no more issues.
If "send to HP" in the title doesn't give it away: My HP Pavilion is under warranty, but the thing is - I've sent it back to HP for repairs twice already (for the same screen-related problem). I hate their customer service for giving me a bad product and not fixing it the first time . I'd do anything to not sent it in again for another few weeks... Hopefully I can do something myself (I'm competent enough to do / learn to do very advanced procedures)....
