I have to replace an elderly computer running Windows 98. I also have a second machine running XP Home. Is the Vista operating system now as stable as XP. I run several older applications including Quicken 2000, Quicken is no longer supported in the UK. Will I definitely have to to upgrade all older software or should will they work with Vista. I don't want to upgrade software particularly everything I run does what I want.
I am running Windows Vista 32 bit edition and the last weeks my computer has slowed down to a snail’s pace, i have checked for viruses and it is clean. I have run CCleaner and to remove all the rubbish but it is still very slow.
I even have trouble booting from a Vista boot DVD, it take approx 5 minutes just to get the welcome screen up that’s before any OS has booted.
I have a CPU monitor on the sidebar and the CPU and the Memory usage is up and down from nothing to 100 % all the time.
And when i do get the computer to work it is very slow and i can only open one window at a time

Just bought a brand new gateway nv52 with vista home premium x64 and it is constantly crashing like several times a day. I'll be running just a few programs like firefox and windows media player or word processor and the computer will freeze, the sound will take whatever the last little note that came out and stutter repeat it several times and then the entire screen will go completely blank to a dark blue screen.

sometimes It happens with in a few clicks of the web pages I enter. I have Kasperky installed and I get pop ups about intrusions............
My particular problem isn't that something wakes the computer back up (that problem was actually fixed using your methods), but rather that my screen goes black and my computer keeps running. My previous computer used sleep mode fine, but I just got a new motherboard (Asus P5N-D), case, and processor (Intel Core 2 Quad), so it's no mystery why it doesn't work anymore, I just can't figure out how to restore the option.

What is the point of doing Beta testing if you are not going to find all the bugs, fix them and then release the product? I'm not trying to be flippant(sp?) here. This is a serious question. With all the money, man/woman power and brain power available to Microsoft for R&D, why is it so hard to put out a product that works from the word go? I don't want to become Microsoft certified in order to keep my computer running. I shouldn't have to fool with my computers registry so that I can install an update to fix a problem that they knew about before they sold it to me. Come on Bill. I thought the whole purpose of technology advancing was to make our life easier. I want to insert disk and push play. I'm not talking about dumbing things down. I'm talking about Microsoft developing their products, making sure they work and then selling them to us. Interesting concept

After installing it and changing the theme some of my icons went missing. after doing some looking into it i think the problem lies in icons missing from the imageres.dll directory. so i got a copy of my friends who uses the same version of windows, but i cant move and replace because the old on is in use. So i tried renaming is and i can move it fine, but when i go to put the new one in i need to be admin and when i move or rename the old one i lose my admin controls... this is getting awful fustrating and i think im just going to reformat if i dont get it fixed within a couple days... Can someone please help. I just dont want to go through teh hassle of reformating.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've recently put together a new computer using these parts: I've updated to Vista Ultimate SP1, run multiple disk clean ups, defrags, use CCleaner, clean the registry, defrag the registry, disabled services and have made tweaks according to the guide provided on this website and have minimal startup programs running but my boot times average around 2 minutes. For a new computer with new hardware, this seems unreasonable as many users report boot times between 30-60 seconds. What could be wrong with my computer? On the vista loading screen with the green bar, it goes through about 22 cycles.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've had some trouble with my system - Dell XPS 630I - hibernation problems, not being able to set or go back to a Restore Point, etc. So I've had a Microsoft tech help me solve my problems in the last few weeks, and after finally coming to the 'Reinstall Vista' as the only solution, I reinstalled yesterday. I have not yet installed any drivers or Dell software, but, obviously, did get my internet capability back.
I'm not worried about getting my system back to normal working order eventually, but one thing has me concerned: My system is running so loud and fast constantly. Previously, when I turned my computer on, during the startup phase, it ran like this (loud and fast, noisy) until it reached the black screen with the colorful, Vista circle in the middle, at which point it quieted down completely and continued with the Windows startup. Does anyone know what it is that has my computer sound like its running so fast, and sounding so loud constantly. Is it going to be one of the system drivers that I will eventually load that will 'calm' my system down??
Recently, while taking my Vista x64 Ultimate computer out of sleep mode, a power outage occurred. When I turned my computer back on, no 32 bit applications run - not even the operating system's own services such as Windows Installer will run if they are 32-bit.
I tried typing 'firefox' in the Task Manager to see what happened. The process appeared for a moment, then was instantly killed. I don't know why. The Windows event log has been unhelpful in diagnosing the problem.
I also looked at Task manager at startup, and saw that all the * 32 processes were dying moments after Vista boots and show the desktop.
I have tried system restore, nothing worked. I tried to auto-repair my system in the windows recovery console, that didn't work either. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem short of simply reinstalling the OS, which I am reticent to do? If so, what should I do?
I have a dual boot system - XP on the boot drive and Vista on a slave drive. The boot drive is failing (clicking on boot and often preventing the computer from passing the bios splash screen). The Vista install modified the boot header on the XP boot drive. This means that I cannot just buy a new boot drive and install XP on it because the boot information allowing for dual boot will need to be re-written to it. How do I do this?
Is it possible for me to make a backup of the dual boot information installed by Vista so that when I replace the boot drive I can copy at least some parts of the information to the boot drive? Will I have to reinstall both XP and Vista on the slave drive? It has taken me ages to get a stable Vista install on the legacy mobo and I have finally managed it - I wouldn't want to reinstall Vista from scratch
just because the boot drive which contains XP and the dual boot information is dying.
Accidentally deleted this folder from C:, and tho I have the files for it on D: (the green 'documents' folder), I cannot access them by clicking start/documents.
How do I fix this blunder ?
Also, probably a post here somewhere, but I tried to do a system restore in the hope that would fix it, but have no restore points...thought this was done automatically?
Just recently got an Intel Q6600 Quad core, just going to do a straight swop with an Intel dual core Q6320, Mine is a triple Boot system, will this destroy all systems, and mean a re-install of everything.

Why would this be? I am forced to press the power button and wait from 5 to 10 minutes to reboot normally. View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed vista sp2 yesterday and now my laptop won't start. it offers two options, start in repair mode or start normally. I have an 18 month old Toshiba Equiium running vista home P 32 bit. If I start normally, the microsoft logo comes up and then the screen blips blue momentarily then it goes off. If I run the repair, it scans for faults, then prompts to run a system restore. I take this option and then it takes many minutes to attempt repairs - ultimately ending with 'windows cannot repair..."
there is a log with lots of 0x0 type errors notices (which are meaningles to me) I can't even get to the point where I could elect to restore to last best save or whatever. I have all my docs backed up on a portable HD but I cannot get past this failed repair message.
I don't see a Calendar group. I have had several occasions when Windows Calendar did not pop up with appointments until a day or two had gone by and it then informs me that the appointment or whatever is x days overdue. Not very helpful obviously. My computer was on and logged in at least once on the days of the appointment. Another problem. Because of the afore-mentioned problem I put Windows Calendar in my Startup folder so I would be forced to see the calendar when I first log in. I have had a couple of crashes now apparently related to this. Once the calendar wouldn't close and the second time the computer froze after displaying the calendar; I was forced to do an unstructured shutdown; and this in turn generated raid 1 disk problems that took hours to be resolved.

Latest problem is windows won't boot, can't restore, can't repair, can't safe mode, can't go to last known good... If i try to run SFC at the command prompt, i get a message that I have a pending repair, and need to reboot. However, since I cannot boot up into windows, this remains always. Is there a way to work via the command prompt to stop this pending repair, so that I can try the SFC to resolve problems I am experiencing?
View 4 Replies View RelatedHaven't gotten any response so I'll try again. A serious problem I am having with Vista calendar is that it is frequently not alerting me to appointments/events. Sometimes days will go by and abruptly I'm presented with a list of past due items. There may be a "good" reason for this happening but I can't imagine what it is as I log into the account associated with the calendar at least once a day. I have been running with the option "Reminders should show when Windows Calendar is not running" set. Also, is there any way to truly share a calendar between users on the same machine? I've used the sharing options but always end up with copies of the calendar and they don't update themselves when another user makes a change.

View 9 Replies View Relatedjust after some idea of what's gone wrong.I was playing Warcraft, got up from desk then heard a weird noise ( by weird almost like a fizzy whooshy kinda thing, lol sorry )the pc went off and appeared to start up but with no display, the keyboard won't work and the keyboard backlight flickers like mad, plus the power button will not switch it off when pressed down...Power is there, lights and fans on processor n graphics are on, DVD drive lights on, 2 on the back are on (unsure what they for), all seems ok but can't see a display, tested keyboard n monitor on ps3 all ok with it being various bits could it be motherboard ? Not fussed bout pc though, just want to make sure it doesn't sound like hardrive, photos n stuff, sods law I didn't back up on Saturday as normal !!
View 6 Replies View RelatedThere is no update, all I get is an error msg "Windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." needless to say, restarting makes no difference. The update history is completely blank and in the meantime I cannot update anything including security essentials and the clock, most of the sites I try to assess tell me the certification is out of date and I can't send any mail.
Running V home premium 32 on a laptop which, to date, has been no trouble at all. The only thing I've done recently is take it apart to defluff the fans, and everything else is running fine. I have problems with IE and Firefox.
Having run the update advisor, it turns out that my computer isn't fully capable of running Windows Aero (shock). The advisor recommended that I chose Home Basic, but I would be able to run Premium, just without the Aero graphics. So my first choice is, Basic or Premium (lacking few features)? My second choice, is after I decide which version, whether I should get the upgrade package or shell out for the full version, just incase?
