HardDrive Local Disk E Wont Files

Aug 24, 2009

My hardrive can show folders. But there's nothing in them all the files have been deleted! Before the breakdown i had to turn off the computer because it was stuck when i was trying to access my hardrive

EDIT: I cant see the files on there but it says that 365 of 465 gb is free so the data might still be there. When I try to make a new folder in there is says it can't find <%3NULL:OpText> and to make sure its there then i can run it. the problem is i have no idea what that is.

Operating System Unknown Local Disk Woundn't Boot

Feb 6, 2010

I'm running Vista Ultimate 64 on a 500 Gig hard drive with 3 partitions. The problem is I marked one of the partitions, not Drive C, as "active" by mistake.I done a Command Prompt to make it "inactive", but when I started the system up again it wouldn't boot.I used the Vista disk for the recovery process, but I got a message "Operating system unknown on (unknown) local disk" i tried fixing the problem with a command prompt "bootrec/fix boot" ,but nothing happened. When I look at the info in Command Prompt it doesn't show the disk partitions, just Disk 0.Also I can't repair because no Disks are listed to be repaired. If I look at the drive in "My Computer" it is full with a file system marked as "Raw" and it wants me to format the drive.I used "Recover My Files" software and it shows some of the documents that are on the drive, but doesn't show any recovery.I looked at some internet post about the message I got and partition and boot problems like I have, but at this point I don't to try any else to make it worse.I would do a reinstall ,but on one of the drives I have some stuff that wasn't backed up.I never thought about backing it up because it wasn't on the C drive.

Junk Files Disk Cleanup

Oct 28, 2008

I have got Auslogics Defrag program and after each defrag I do it tells me I have a number of junk files, at present 971 sometimes its way over 1000 and I then do a disk cleanup hoping to get rid of them, but after installing another game or program of some sort, again I am told I have several junk files. I would like to know how I can get rid as it also tells me that they can slow the PC down and lessen performance, not that my PC is a slouch, far from it, but I still don't like the idea of junk files on my PC and would like for once to sort this out, as before I have never taken any notice of it, perhaps I should have, but thats me, untidy as always!

Is there a time range that Disk Cleanup protects the temp files it should remove? After running Disk Cleanup there are still temp files left in C:/windows/temp and in the appdata/local/temp in my users folder. However the files left are recent files, so does Disk Cleanup only remove files which older than a few days old?

Files & Folders Missing But Disk Space Still Used?

Mar 19, 2010

I was adding some files from my laptop to my desktop today, and after I was finished, all of my files disappeared. All the files in the folder I was adding things to, and the parent folder that held that folder, along with all the files in the parent folder. All the disk space is still taken up though, so they must still exist SOMEWHERE. I tried a system restore, and it got some of the files back, but not many of them. I'd say about 20 out of a couple hundred. I also tried this program called Disk Healer, and it said that the folders did not exist anymore.

Bloat, Hidden Files Consuming Disk Space

Mar 31, 2008

I performed a Clean Install of Windows Vista Ultimate, on a new computer. I loaded all of my software in preparation of switching my production system from WXP to Vista. I then noticed something about the disk space.

I have 232 GB drive and C Properties indicated I was using 69 GB. Looking at the drive with Windows Explorer (Folder options are set to show all files), I tag all files and the properties show I am using 19 GB of storage. That is correct, as it is similar to the amount of storage used on several Vista beta systems. So, where is the missing 50 GB?

I found a program, WinDirStat (http://windirstat.info/) which confirms I am missing 50 GB as it does the same math I do and it labels the missing amount as Unknown. That is not terrible useful, as one would like to know what the actual files are.

I did all of the usual cleaning up (Disk Cleanup, clear the Recycle bin, remove all System Points and turn of Shadow Copies). The System Volume Information folder has only 20 KB of files in it. I surfed the Internet looking for other file management software which would show the missing files. I did not find any.

Disk Cleanup Empty Temp Files Not Emptying

Aug 12, 2009

Vista Home Premium upgraded to SP2 Danish. When I do a Disk Cleanup then it should empty all temp files on the hdd, but I found out that its not emptying the following, why is that? c:BrugereThunderAppDataLocalTemp c:windowsTemp Eventhough you are logged in as administrator c:BrugereAdministratorAppDataLocalTemp Now the question is if I can delete these files without trouble? Or is there a reason why these files are not deleted and should not be deleted? As the subjet line says, I'm wondering why my windows folder takes up 16.3GB? I'm thinking that its all the old updates that takes up all this space since it seems to be mostly located in these 2 folders :windowswinsxs - 10.8GB c:windowssystem32 - 3.82GB What can be done about this?

Free Up Disk Space By Deleting Backup Files

Feb 25, 2007

Windows Vista has loads of new backup features such as previous versions of your documents and system state points that are part of System Restore.  All of these features are turned on by default and offer you a great deal of backup protection. However, you pay a big price in disk space.  Every once in a while when your system is stable and you need to free up some disk space, it is a good idea to clear all of these previous versions of your files and System Restore points from your computer. This is a very easy way to free up a few gigabytes of space across all of your hard drives.

To get started, just follow these steps: ...

Harddrive Stuck Up

May 11, 2009

I was about to order a new harddrive since mine has failed. But then I decided to look inside one more time, and found that there are two harddrives in there. I never used he second one at all even though it was always there (i figured it was just one harddrive split in two and never needed the extra space). So I decided to switch the harddrive cords since one was hard to get to and because I have no idea which is the one I was using and which one I never used. I used my recovery disks on it and it seemed like everything was going fine. Then to test it, I shut down the computer then turned it back on 5 minutes later. Then I got stuck on the black screen with blinking "_", and eventually it says failed to boot disk please insert system disk.

so my questions are:
*Did switching the cords make the secondary harddrive the main one,
*Does this mean both harddrives have failed?
*Are my system files corrupt?

Harddrive Slowing Down

Jun 26, 2008

When I power on my PC running Vista and having a huge engine, the first approx. 30 minutes something is accessing my harddrive. It sounds as a program is constan tly reading and or writing to the drive, slowing down the entire system. I am using the avast virus protecting, but shut down what I don't need (I have no virus), the indexing I have also closed, and I am not running the Sidepanel (closed down a few days ago). Looking at the joblist I can see no processes using more than 2%, however the disk is used 48% (as shown in the sidepanel). Does anyone have an idea of what I can do to cure this? The PC is a Medion bought late last year. It is my first PC with Vista.

Harddrive Running At 100% All The Time

Apr 29, 2008

And i can hear the harddrive running all the time, even when the PC is doing
nothing.

I have turned off indexing, that search thing, and auto defrag and also the superper frech thing but still it is running at 100%.

if i check the monitoring tools it shows it at 100% all the time.

i left the machine on for 3 days doing nothing, and still hd is running at 100%.

i cant do that much with the thing, it can take 5min to copy a 10mb file on the desktop to my documents folder.

I have done a totaly reinstall (and disbaled the above services), and again still running at 100% all the time the machine specs, are quad 2.6ghz, 3gb ram, 750gb hd.

i have also noticed that the avalible memory is 10mb when checking on task manager.

(i have also installed windows xp pro, and this works all ok, so i am guess it is something to do with vista)

Booting From Harddrive On A Desktop?

Sep 12, 2009

I am building a PC for the first time and the assembly wasn't too bad. Every component is powering up and seems to be operating fine. I also installed my 2.5" Hard drive from my broken laptop that runs 32bit Vista Home Premium. So after the motherboard posts when i first started up, vista boots but is extremely sluggish.

I am a real novice when it comes to this sort of stuff, but i think the problem is that the harddrive hasnt detected the new components. Aside from the processor it still shows old hardware from the laptop like memory and video card and doesnt even register the second hard drive installed. How can i get vista to recognize all the new hardware? The reason i did this is because i wanted to get around buying another copy of vista if i could.
