Could No Longer Right-click And Create Shortcuts
May 1, 2009About a week ago I noticed that I could no longer right-click and create shortcuts. When I click on New > Shortcut, nothing happens, and I can't figure out why.

Apr 30, 2010I am having problems with creating shortcuts on my desktop. when i select send to desktop (create shortcut) it comes up with the error. Windows could create the shortcut. Check to see if the disc is full.I have over 180 GB free space left. To get things to the desktop i can drag it into the tab section next to the start icon, and then drag onto desktop.But when i do this i am always required to give permission and it creates two desktop icons.i have been having problems with my catalyst control centre but i dont think they are related.

Dec 22, 2008I've read a few topics that talk about editing the Recycle Bin right-click menu, but I don't care about that. What I want to do is to be able to right-click anywhere...in any folder, on the desktop, etc. and have the option of emptying my recycle bin. I had a registry tweak in XP and I tried it in Vista just to see if it would work, but no good. I know it can be done via a registry setting but I'm not too familiar with Vista's system registry locations yet.

I have lost, for some reason, the Create a Desktop Short cut from my right click context menu.
I tried one thing and all I got was the Desktop icon on my Desktop. I did more searching but can NOT find: "the file *Desktop (create shortcut)* from the Default user folder."
I went to my User folder and there is no such item. Am I looking in the wrong area?

Apr 18, 2008I have a microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse which work really well but when I reboot, the keyboard shortcuts that I have programmed don't work until I go into properties and click on them and then click ok. The keys then work ok until I reboot again.Is there any way that I can programme the changes so they are the default programmes whenever I reboot. The software loaded fine and I clicked on apply and save when I originally set the keys.....I have a HP Pavilion DV6700 Laptop with windows visa home premium which is about one month old.

After spending a lot of time trying to find a solution, here is the way I have solve the problem. Now the sidebar is just working fine. This behavior is observed if the XML registration is missing in the system. To fix the problem, use the following steps:
* Close Windows Sidebar. To do so, right-click on the Sidebar icon in the Notification area and click Exit
* Open an elevated Command Prompt window. To do so, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
* In the Command Prompt window, type the following and press ENTER:
Create An Account For Another User I Cannot Create One, Either Admin Or Standard
Sep 13, 2009I am running Windows Vista Home Premium 32 (system specs: laptop 2.1 Ghz core 2 duo, 4 gb RAM, 500gb hd (about half full) nvidia 8400M GS, Avira Premium Security Suite). I have had the computer for about a year running fine with 1 main admin account. Now when I need to create an account for another user I cannot create one, either admin or standard. When I create it, using either the control panel or command prompt, it creates the user picture, making the account visible on the control panel user accounts screen, and on logon screen. However, when trying to log into the new account I am greeted with the error "User profile service failed on logon. User profile cannot be loaded." The standard fix for this from various forums is to edit the registry key of the account. However, on going to regedit I see that no key even exists for the account. On further investigation I discover that no user files have been created either. I attempted a system restore, but discovered that all my past restore points were gone, and intruigingly, the computer had stopped createing 24 hour checkpoints. I cannot say for definite whether it was this issue or another one that caused system restore to mess up, as I don't check my system restore all that often. Either way, system restore is not an option. There have been mentions of a full Vista reinstall, though if at all possible I would like to avoid this.

Mar 5, 2009When I install Vista, it wants to force me to create a local account, and it won't let me create one called Administrator, becuase the name is already used (thus the Administrator account exists). I don't want to create some dummy account just just to log in to join the domain. How do I get past the "Choose a user name and picture" screen and log in as Administrator so I can just install the network drivers and join my domain?

Jul 23, 2008i left my son on the pc when i came back on half my desk top icons had changed to adobe icons
when i clicked on say outlook it tried to open with adobe
the only short fix was to uninstall adobe then all my icons went back to normal
then i tried reinstalling adobe reader and most of the desktop icons changed back to adobe icons.

Apr 25, 2009For some reason my shortcuts have program icons on them. I used a Windows teaking program awhile ago to remove the shortcut arrows and I dont think thats the problem cause' its been fine until now.

Apr 7, 2010Under the adminstrator log in, all the shortcut images are showing under "all Programs" under the start menu. Under all other user log in's, there is a blank file image(white square) with an arrow. I can not access the program when click on the white square. Also, the shortcut tab is missing under properties. I recently used wipedrive(lost restore cd) to restore the system to original factory condition.
Some items require me to find the file location to reinstall. I tried the rebuild icon tutorial, the file associations, retore vista shortcuts/icons & the default program options. Nothing has worked. Also, I noticed when I try to open another window in internet explorer it says "can not display page". It use to say something to the effect "open tab tutorial".

It then looks to know if I want to save this program. It can then run it perfectly. One annoying aspect is that I am not able to get accessories within Programs. File Association With Email Shortcuts

In Win Explorer, What Are Those Stupid Shortcuts On My Tree, And What Use Are They?
Dec 21, 2009I first set hands on an IBM PC in 1980: DOS 2.0, Word 1.0 & Lotus 1 (not 1a). I'm organized can find things on a hard drive just fine, thank you very much. I'm used to a tree and a file list, and had them with PCTools long before Peter bought that app and turned it into Norton Utilities or Gates even dreamed of such a thing as part of his OS.
Vista's Explorer tree goes:
Desktop
Sarah
Public
Computer
etc
I understand and use Computer, and I'm finding Public useful, but in Sarah, there are some shortcuts that don't go anywhere, e.g., application data, local settings, my documents, cookies, etc. When I left-click on them, all I ever get is "location not available" "access denied" with blather in between.
Do they have a name? I tried hunting for info on them, but without a specific name for them, it's impossible. What earthly use are those shortcuts supposed to be if you can't click on them and go anywhere? Is there someplace else that they show up or do they only exist in explorer under the user name? If they do show somewhere else, are they any use there? Can they be safely deleted? I've already tried moving them and you can't.
I'm guessing that "Sarah" is my personal user collection of folders or shell folders. It has already "collected" stuff that I don't want to see there. I'd like to clean it up, but I'll settle for getting rid of these bits of trash first.

May 28, 2008I did some digging and found some situations that sound similar to my problem, but none covered the same issue I'm seeing. I've been running Vista for several months now. At some time in the last week or two, many of my Start Menu shortcuts have stopped working. If I look at the properties of those shortcuts, it seems to be the ones that don't have an actual path in the Target field. E.g. Word as "Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003" instead of an actual path to WINWORD.EXE, and that shortcut doesn't work. Nothin happens when you select it. However the shortcut to Notepad has "%SystemRoot%system32otepad.exe" in its Target field, and it works just fine.
This only happens with SOME of the shortcuts. E.g. the "recently used" list of shortcuts in the Start menu does this, and if I type WinKey-WORD and select the Microsoft Word shortcut that shows up there, it doesn't work. But if I select the Word shortcut under Start -> All Programs -> Microsoft Office, it works just fine -- even though it also has the non-path Target field. What has happened to these "special" shortcuts? How do I fix it and prevent this from happening again?
