can anyone tell me if its possible to change the generic Vista keyboards shortcuts? I'm having problems playing games (WOW in articular) where I hit Alt F4 or Alt TAB and it takes me out of the game, quite frustrating! I know it will most likely be easier to change in game setup but im hoping to be able to disable the Vista shortcuts or at least disable them for this program etc

Is there a way to access the Device Settings in the Mouse Properties via keyboard shortcuts? I can get to the Mouse Properties via Windows start button key > arrow navigate to control panel > arrow navigate to mouse icon > press enter. But I can't get to the Device Settings tab!
Fn + F9 doesn't work, by the way!
as a software developer I find it very hard to use Vista just using the keyboard. One of the things I'm missing is the option to create new folders from within the Vista Common Dialogs for loading and saving files. Usually on Windows this is "+, , ". Did I perhaps misconfigure Vista to not support keyboard shortcuts? Or are they missing indeed?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a new laptop, HP Compaq, running Vista. I have the volume set on high on the task bar, and in the sound properties in the control panel, but it is hardly audible. When I test the sound in properties it's ok and Windows Media player is just about ok. (or will do) but unless I'm right at the laptop, i can't hear any other of the sounds, they are so low. i.e when I'm buzzed on IM, email notification, critical battery etc. I know sounds on laptops aren't that good unless you have speakers, but this is ridiculously low. May as well be on mute!

View 9 Replies View RelatedThis worked for me before but I messed it up. I used to be able to record the sound coming from my computer and play it to my microphone right away as it goes. Meaning when I record something, it would record whatever is playing on the computer. But I forgot how to make that setting.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded to Vista U x64 and am having sound problems. I have a prelude x-fi sound card but the sound coming out of it is extremely low. I have maxed out every thing I can max (control panel sound, creative panel) and the sound level is whisper quiet. I have also upgraded all my drivers except the prelude's, I would but their website isn't offering those drivers at the moment. But the drivers supplied with the card are vista certified so I should get something. But my mobo, etc is all updated. I have been searching for a solution for two days to no avail.

I'm having trouble with shortcuts not working (not doing anything) in Vista. About as much as I can explain is that shortcuts with greyed out fields don't work, but shortcuts with all the fields editable work fine.
Examples below.

For some reason my shortcuts have program icons on them. I used a Windows teaking program awhile ago to remove the shortcut arrows and I dont think thats the problem cause' its been fine until now.

Under all other user log in's, there is a blank file image(white square) with an arrow. I can not access the program when click on the white square. Also, the shortcut tab is missing under properties. I recently used wipedrive(lost restore cd) to restore the system to original factory condition.
Some items require me to find the file location to reinstall. I tried the rebuild icon tutorial, the file associations, retore vista shortcuts/icons & the default program options. Nothing has worked. Also, I noticed when I try to open another window in internet explorer it says "can not display page". It use to say something to the effect "open tab tutorial".

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have recently found that my desktop shortcuts no longer work. When I double click I get a list (a very short list) of programs which might be used to open a particular software. It then looks to know if I want to save this program. It can then run it perfectly. One annoying aspect is that I am not able to get accessories within Programs. I use Paint quite a bit and it is now no longer available to me.
View 8 Replies View RelatedRemote Assistance in Windows Vista is a great tool that is ofter overlooked and forgotten about. When it is actually used, it can be very valuable when trying to troubleshoot issues and demonstrate how to do a task to remote users. I find it very helpful when trying to assist my parents when they have a computer issue. Instead of trying to blindly walk them through something on the phone, I can connect to their computer and show how since remote assistance allows them to see what I am doing.
In Windows Vista Remote Assistance has been greatly improved and now has many command line parameters that make it easy for administrators to create shortcuts for their users. Check out the sections below for various Remote assistance shortcuts: ...
I am experiencing difficulty concerning file association with email shortcuts as can be seen in the attachment. When I click on what I think is my email shortcut, I receive the attached message.
This has only started within the last days and wonder if anyone can instruct me how to correct this error.
About a week ago I noticed that I could no longer right-click and create shortcuts. When I click on New > Shortcut, nothing happens, and I can't figure out why.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI first set hands on an IBM PC in 1980: DOS 2.0, Word 1.0 & Lotus 1 (not 1a). I'm organized can find things on a hard drive just fine, thank you very much. I'm used to a tree and a file list, and had them with PCTools long before Peter bought that app and turned it into Norton Utilities or Gates even dreamed of such a thing as part of his OS.
Vista's Explorer tree goes:
Desktop
Sarah
Public
Computer
etc
I understand and use Computer, and I'm finding Public useful, but in Sarah, there are some shortcuts that don't go anywhere, e.g., application data, local settings, my documents, cookies, etc. When I left-click on them, all I ever get is "location not available" "access denied" with blather in between.
Do they have a name? I tried hunting for info on them, but without a specific name for them, it's impossible. What earthly use are those shortcuts supposed to be if you can't click on them and go anywhere? Is there someplace else that they show up or do they only exist in explorer under the user name? If they do show somewhere else, are they any use there? Can they be safely deleted? I've already tried moving them and you can't.
I'm guessing that "Sarah" is my personal user collection of folders or shell folders. It has already "collected" stuff that I don't want to see there. I'd like to clean it up, but I'll settle for getting rid of these bits of trash first.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI did some digging and found some situations that sound similar to my problem, but none covered the same issue I'm seeing. I've been running Vista for several months now. At some time in the last week or two, many of my Start Menu shortcuts have stopped working. If I look at the properties of those shortcuts, it seems to be the ones that don't have an actual path in the Target field. E.g. Word as "Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003" instead of an actual path to WINWORD.EXE, and that shortcut doesn't work. Nothin happens when you select it. However the shortcut to Notepad has "%SystemRoot%system32otepad.exe" in its Target field, and it works just fine.
This only happens with SOME of the shortcuts. E.g. the "recently used" list of shortcuts in the Start menu does this, and if I type WinKey-WORD and select the Microsoft Word shortcut that shows up there, it doesn't work. But if I select the Word shortcut under Start -> All Programs -> Microsoft Office, it works just fine -- even though it also has the non-path Target field. What has happened to these "special" shortcuts? How do I fix it and prevent this from happening again?
