I have shortcuts to web pages on my desktop. They recently stopped working. When I click one, the arrow changes to a blue spinning circle and nothing else happens. If I click the IE icon, it opens and functions normally. I have Vista Home Basic and IE7. I ran Windows Update. It installed a bunch of updates, including IE8. But the problem remains.

View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter fighting to get rid of a Trojan horse virus, I am missing the internet browser. E-mail works OK. Clicking 'Internet' icon gets me the message 'Internet Explorer has stopped working:". I tried 'restore' but it is not working either. I get the message 'an unspecified error occurred during system restore'. I scanned with AVG and the files it scanned are clean. I have a 'restore' DVD made by the computer vendor but when I stick it in the CD drive nothing happens. The computer is a 1 year old ACER with VISTA home premium preinstalled. How do I proceed from here? I have no idea what to do.

Is it not obvious by now that Vista has a problem, maybe a compatability problem, with everything from Internet Explorer and Microsoft Word to third party programs which cause programs, as I mentioned, even programs made by Microsoft, to "stop working"? Is there no an overall "stopped working" patch or something that Microsoft has released by now?...............

I originally thought her internet service was the problem, but after finding my laptop works there & after a lot of time on the phone, I think I know the problem- but no answer. View 6 Replies View RelatedMy internet connection stopped working last night. It allows me to connect to my wireless network, but not to the internet. It keeps giving me a 169... IP address. Even if I run the comm. prompt as the admin. it wont release the IP address when I type ipconfig/release. I've tried turning off and unplugging everything from the router. I have also done a sytem restore which did nothing. My ISP doesn't know what to do and Dell wants to charge me a ton of money.

View 9 Replies View Relatedmy firefox & IE have suddenly stopped working (blank page; "website found; waiting for reply" on IE and "waiting for xxxxx.com" on firefox). literally. one minute they were working, the next minute they weren't. i didn't do anything special in between. not even a reboot. now, it's only IE and firefox; messenger still works and so does skype and some other internet apps. i can even ping yahoo.com from cmd.

I try to enter into this chatroom on a discussion forum I frequent I get that stupid message box that says "Internet Explorer has stopped working" it shows a litle progress bar under it and says "Windows is checking for a solution" but all it ever comes up with is another box that says "A propgram has caused this program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
I had no problem entering the chat room on my other computer a Dell Inspiron E1705 but that one is now dead and I am currently using a Dell XPSm1730 running Vista Home Premium. I tried deleting my browsing history and re-downloading/installing Java but it doesn't seem to do any good.
I've been getting this error message whenever I try to delete a website or folder from my Favorites. I can click close program and my homepage comes back up. Check online for a solution does nothing. I looked at the details and realized I was running IE 7.0.6001.1800 so I downloaded IE 8, but the problem persists. Right now the only way I can make it happen is by trying to delete something in my Favorites folder, but it has just come up randomly a few times. I googled "Internet Explorer has stopped working" and got lots of pages where other users are having the same problem, suggesting various fixes, but none has worked for me so far. Hope I didn't make a mistake by downloading IE8!

When I double click I get a list (a very short list) of programs which might be used to open a particular software. It then looks to know if I want to save this program. It can then run it perfectly. One annoying aspect is that I am not able to get accessories within Programs. I use Paint quite a bit and it is now no longer available to me.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm pretty sure I'll have to do a install repair, but would like confirmation. It started when friend tried downloading a video file he sent to himself. (so no virus potential) he told the system to open with everything on his system to get it to play. It was a mpeg2 file so it would never play. When he gave up and tried launching a program. Every shortcut on the desktop launches with iexplorer. Properties for the shortcut point to the executable file for the intended program, so I don't get it. if I go to the program files folder and click on the executables, it launches correctly. only the shortcuts have been changed.

Then when windows started I noticed that my wallpaper was the original vista wallpaper, all my sidebar gadgets were just the starting ones, and that about half my desktop shortcuts were missing. On top of that, all my documents, pictures, music, and even my bookmarks on mozilla firefox were gone!! But oddly enough when I go into C:/users/Matt everything is where it should be. But if i use the links from the start bar, it takes me to Users/Temp folder.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI did some digging and found some situations that sound similar to my problem, but none covered the same issue I'm seeing. I've been running Vista for several months now. At some time in the last week or two, many of my Start Menu shortcuts have stopped working. If I look at the properties of those shortcuts, it seems to be the ones that don't have an actual path in the Target field. E.g. Word as "Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003" instead of an actual path to WINWORD.EXE, and that shortcut doesn't work. Nothin happens when you select it. However the shortcut to Notepad has "%SystemRoot%system32otepad.exe" in its Target field, and it works just fine.
This only happens with SOME of the shortcuts. E.g. the "recently used" list of shortcuts in the Start menu does this, and if I type WinKey-WORD and select the Microsoft Word shortcut that shows up there, it doesn't work. But if I select the Word shortcut under Start -> All Programs -> Microsoft Office, it works just fine -- even though it also has the non-path Target field. What has happened to these "special" shortcuts? How do I fix it and prevent this from happening again?
I am having problems with creating shortcuts on my desktop. when i select send to desktop (create shortcut) it comes up with the error. Windows could create the shortcut. Check to see if the disc is full.I have over 180 GB free space left. To get things to the desktop i can drag it into the tab section next to the start icon, and then drag onto desktop.But when i do this i am always required to give permission and it creates two desktop icons.i have been having problems with my catalyst control centre but i dont think they are related.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I download (like Adobe) from net, my OS asks not if I want to "run," but only if I want to "copy." Yes, from the "copy" I can install the wanted software. But the icon directing me to "install" remains on my desktop and all attempts to delete unwanted icon cause a failure to start on restart and the "repair" always replaces the icons. If I don't get an education, I'll eventually have a desktop full of icons I neither need nor want.
