My computer jumps backwards on most applications. I thought it was internet explorer, but it happens even when I'm using Word. It acts as though I clicked on another area with the mouse when I didn't...most of the time I am not even touching the mouse.

Can I avoid reinstalling all the system and applications by keeping the existing system partition? Re-activating Windows should be legally possible (even by telephone) because my Vista version is a full retail one. I don't expect it to be that simple, but maybe someone has some advice about using the Vista Recovery Environment to re-build the HAL, or erasing certain registry keys in Safe Mode to force Vista to reinstall the correct system devices. At present, I can not get past booting under Safe Mode, so there has to be more to the process - if one is achievable
View 7 Replies View RelatedMy problem is when ever i try to launch certain applications it causes an extreme slow down of the system and high cpu usage, after 30+ seconds the system goes back to normal and the program responds fine. Seems to be a bit slow in loading as well. Programs affected include winamp (latest), nero 8, windows media player 11, powerdvd, right clicking on hard drives and opening properties but not accessing the hdd's. Programs which aren't affected include media player classic, open office, ie7, firefox 3, vlc player. I have been messing around with my codecs recently trying to get thumbnail previews of the .avi files on my pc which suceeding in by installing ffdshowx64 so i uninstalled this and the 64bit vista codec pack to no avail. I disabled kaspersky but that was no good either. I also disabled my raid array but that had no effect

View 9 Replies View RelatedRecently I had to replace my motherboard AND hard drive, so my computer was basically wiped of everything. I saved the files that I could, and moved them, and they work fine. Before this, the sims 2 (and the EP's that I had for it) all worked perfectly. The problem now is that I do not think DX10 is compatible with TS2, despite the fact that "directx 10 is backwards compatible" (which it does not appear to be.) From what I understand, I cannot uninstall DX10. THis is a little ridiculous; no directx software came with my computer, and I had to install it. DX10 is supposed to have all of the DX 9.0c updates, but what if it doesn't? Is there a way or a place that I can put DX 9.0c files into DX10? Is there some way that I can check the DX10 files to make sure what I need is there? IF those are failed options, is there a program that I can install which will uninstall DX10 so that I can install DX 9.0c?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am experiencing a general slow down of my Vista system, e.g., 5-30 seconds for applications to load, 5-10 seconds for a new tab to appear in IE8, applications displaying "not responding" while an operation is working such as saving an image or file, etc.
This is isolated to Vista only. I have Windows 7 and XP installed (tri-boot) as well and they do not exhibit this problem. So, I have to conclude it is not hardware related. The system is squeaky clean; full scans with KAV 9.0.0.746 and Malwarebyte's Anti-malware. I've run both Chkdsk and SFC /scannow resulting in no change. Task Manager shows no unusual CPU usage nor Memory usage.
When I edit Word Documents I get something that looks weird with all sorts of strange characters in the document or letter. How do I edit a previously created Word file and get it to look like a normal document like they did with Word 2003?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Toshiba notebook with Vista Business installed. Recently I installed the sidebar and added the "CPU performance meter" and noticed that it was constantly in motion. Looking at the Performance tab in task manager, I see that the CPU(s) (dual core) are very priodically show spikes. Every 4 to 5 seconds, the usage jumps from perhaps 10% to 70-80 %, and then goes back to 10%.
The laptop shows this bahavior over long periods of time, even if no application is running. Looking at the processe that are running, it appears that one of the "svchost.exe" (of which there are quite a few) seems to be the culprit, but I have no idea what is behind it. How do I find out what this process is actually doing? Can I simply end it to see what happens, or will that harm my laptop?
This has been going on for quite a while but its getting to severe points. What's happening is basically explorer.exe jumps straight to 95-99% when vista boots and remains like that without budging, resulting in extreme slow computer performance. Attempting to close the explorer then restarting will temporary bring it back to aroung 50% but it will soon jump up again, restarting doesnt work.
Here's the stuff Ive tried to do:
1- Got rid of the index.dat files in the TIF, apparently they slow performance.
2- Turned off search indexing
3- Tried to defragment the memory, but it doesnt do anything!
The weird thing is that it jumps to 99 without having anything running which implies that there is a background process thats eating up the CPU!
My cursor (not the mouse cursor) won't stay in one place. It jumps from field to field in just about every program I use, going from left to right, just like I'm pushing down the tab button on the keyboard. I'm on a desktop and not a laptop. It makes it very hard to type or to chose options in pop up windows. It makes the scroll bars move all by themselves too. I tried updating my keyboard driver without any improvement.

I installed the mouse driver again but also the problem stays the same. It's not a virus because I checked that trough a virusscan. Is there anyone of you who knows how I can solve this problem?

Restarting explorer.exe or the computer temporarily fixes this problem until all memory is used up again. The problem can be reproduced with folders containing MPEG-2 clips. Other file types do not seem to trigger this behaviour. View 8 Replies View RelatedI would like to ask you to Google for FileCopy/progressbar problem and see how Earth is filled with us - morons. My progress Bwr keeps dancing left & right, calulating time remaining (always lying by a huge marging unlike WinXP), but it's not too important. Important is that data transfer rate jumps from 16Mbps down to KBs periodically as it scans thru multipel files. All it can fast is copying a SINGLE large file, even that estimating time remaining and progress bar are not as good as in WinXP
This is one of the 500 admitted bugs Microsoft admits to in Vista and its a beauty. I hate to keep harping on the same point, but it makes absolutely no sense to me how such a basic function not just gets screwed up, but WHY Microsoft would ship Vista with such a obvious bug in it. It totally trashes their reputation. Oh wait, we're talking Microsoft. We know their reputation. Ship and fix later. Everybody knows whatever version of Windows we're talking about WAIT for the service pack before most of the bugs are out.
My main 'gripe' is if I am in Windows Mail, send an email - it sends, then immediately jumps to the browser, leaving Mail. I have to go back into mail. The system seems to have a mind of it's own. What do I do to get to STAY in Mail, rather than the window of the browser bounce back?

I am currently using XP Professional SP-2.
Partition was created to install Vista Ultimate.
When I added partition to my primary drtive (C) it assigned drive letter designatioin of J: as letters D E F G H I were assigned to DVD burners and other hard drives both internal and USB Vista will be installed to J: as noted.
Will programs already installed - Office 2007, Nero, Adobe, ITunes etc. need to be installed to Vista partition or can I access them on my first (XP) partition?
I want your opinion. I need to reformat and reinstall vista. A friend who insists he is an expert told me to partition HD and put the vista operating system on one drive and install and have everything else on another drive. The reason he said is if I need to reinstall vista I do not have to reinstall everything else like I am doing now. I am skeptical. (Definitely do not want this guy touching my computer.)
Questions:
1. Assume I figure out and do this install configuration correctly. Can I actually reinstall Vista later if needed without causing trouble with my apps on the other drive (partition?)?
2. I use Vista Windows Mail as my email client. Does using Windows Mail make this configuration irrelevant?
3. How easy or difficult to do this? When does "The law of diminishing returns" start to apply? Will there be sufficient benefit for the amount of work invested configuring this way?
I have seen a couple of threads talking about similar topics but none of them provided a solution. My vista 64 home premium worked fine until last week. All applications started without problems and I was happy. One day, I tried to click on some recently launched applications (such as Firefox which is my default internet browser) but this time, it didn't launch When double-clicking, nothing was happening...
I tried with many other applications, even the Windows Vista ones such as media player and... the same... VLC media player, Firefox, Avira (my antivirus), IE 32 bits,... nothing launches! The only apps apparently not impacted are IE7 64bit, Notepad and Comodo (firewall). Both Windows Defender and Firewall are up and running but nothing happens when I deactivate Comodo and Windows defender/firewall. Still the same. I don't know if this is related to a previous update installation (it's on automatic) but I can't make use of my laptop in such conditions.
How do i get my 32 bit apps to adress more than 2 gb of ram? Ive heard you can increase it to 3 or 4 gb & since i have 8gb of ram i dont see any downside to doing so, but ive only heard rumors that this is possible.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have had a major problem for a while now with my fujitsu siemens laptop, I can use it for about 1 week or so and the laptop will run very slow and will not allow me to access any applications, and my computer acctually crashes now, And yes I have had that annoying blue screen. I have no choice but to wipe the hard drive fully, then re-install windows vista 32bit via the Fujitsu Siemens Recovery Console, I will say I never shut my computer down, I only ever put it on hibernate because I hate waiting for it to boot up, And I do know that the hibernate feature can affect the hard drive, but I can not see why I have this problem,

My old desktop is dying so I ordered this new HP tower to replace it. It seems it has a Phenom x4 processor, 4GB RAM and 640GB disk. Delivery is expected in a day or so. Re-reading the spec just now I am horrified to discover it will be pre-loaded with a 64bit OS. But I don't have any 64 bit applications. Use mainly MS Office, WMC, photoshop elements, CorelDraw and a finance package. Although I have a newish LCD monitor my printers and router predate VISTA. Reading the various problems with 64 bit on these forums I am frankly scared. I can't afford a learning curve and non-functionality. What do you advise that I do? Can I down-grade to 32 bit before I start to load applications? Or are the problems with 64 bit over-stated? I know the box is over-spec for what I do but I bought what was in-stock and at a reasonable price.
