Optical USB Mouse Turning On And Off

Mar 29, 2008

My Logitech Optical Laser USB Mouse has just recently begun turning on and off whenever it feels like it. I have used the mouse for years and all seemed good. I got a new laptop 5 months ago with Vista Ultimate 32 bit and the mouse worked fine, but a few days ago my laptop froze up and I was forced to hold down the power button to restart it. When it rebooted the mouse will work for a while then turn off for 3-5 seconds and then work again. Does this a few times every minute. I have 6 USB ports and tried the mouse in all of them but has the same problem. Tried the mouse on another computer and it works fine. Device manager says device is working properly and all latest drivers are alredy installed.

Optical Mouse: Page Continue To Scroll

Aug 20, 2009

I have a Microsoft optical mouse. It's a couple of years old and I'm trying to determine whether it's faulty or not. The problem seems to be with the scroll wheel. When on a webpage and using the wheel to scroll, often the page will continue to scroll (only another 50 or so pixels) after I've released the mouse. It seems to be at least a full second or two after I've finished scrolling, let go of the mouse then the page continues to scroll (only by one increment/decrement). It doesn't seem to be the wheel clicking into place either, as I first thought. I'm trying to find out if anyone else has experienced this and/or whether it could be a registry setting or something else causing this. Otherwise, it's a hardware issue.

Freezes Only Mouse Works

May 30, 2009

I have a laptop running windows vista home premium 32bit. I've been having trouble with freezing problems where everything will freeze up except my mouse. I can move the mouse pointer around but i can't click on anything and bringing up the task manager using ctrl-alt-delete or ctrl-shift-escape doesn't work either. I have to do a forced shut down.

This happens at random times. I could be browsing the internet, word processing, listening to music, or anything. It happens both on a clean vista install and regular manufacturer (sony) os. I have all the updated drivers. What could be the problem?

Freezing But Mouse Works.

Feb 3, 2009

I have Windows Vista Home Premium, Sony Vaio Model PCG-384L, 1.8 GHz, 2.00 Gb of Ram and it is a 32 bit operating system. I have been having troubles with my Vaio since a couple months after i got it. The main problem i am having with it now is sometimes when i will be playing a game it will either kill the game... it will crash, or i will get a "blue screen of death." No death has happened yet... but anyways...Now, randomely, if i stop using my laptop for an extended period of time it will freeze at whatever screen it was at before it froze. If a screensaver came on and you move the mouse it will actually cancel the screensaver like its supposed to... and yes MY MOUSE WORKS!? I don't understand what is going on, it is not overheating... its quite cool just after it happened when i caught it the one time. Anyone have anything similar or any clue what to do? (i have downloaded all of the possible updates... )

Optical Drive Hookup

Jun 24, 2008

I had a fried computer that had an optical drive I wtd to take out and put into my new computer running Vista. The drive has IDE connections on the back (its about 5 yrs old or so). I had bought an IDE to SATA drive adaptor in order to hookup the drive to my computer. I put the card on the back of the drive and hooked up one cable out of the back of the drive to an empty power cable...and the other cable out of the back of the drive to the SATA3 slot on the motherboard (the only one not used).

I went to re-boot the computer but during the boot process, it hangs. Do I have to do anything to the master/slave thing on the back of the drive or do anything in BIOS before the drive works? I am a bit new to this but I had thought I did things correctly. I just figured that I would slap the drive in..the computer would recognize it..install drivers..and be good to go.

USB (Wired) Network Card?

May 21, 2008

I have an old USB wired (Cat5/Cat5e/Cat6, ethernet, LAN, NIC...) network card, but ever since I installed 64-bit Vista Ultimate, I can't find any products with drivers for the OS. Has anyone had any luck with a USB network card on Vista x64? In advance,
1. Yes, I need x64 to break the RAM barrier on this computer.
2. It's a laptop, and I don't need more cards to remove when I undock it.
3. Two networks at a university: one from the school with autherntication, and the other goes to my small in-room network.

Xbox360 Is Wired, Not Wireless

Mar 22, 2009

2 years ago bought a laptop with vista Home premium, and xbox360 was automatically recognized. I set up nothing and it worked fine, and wirelessly. That laptop died and I got a new one, this time I had to set everything up, for XP Media Center/xbox 360 and got it to work, but it will only work if my laptop is wired, it won't work wirelesly. I still have Home Premium, I think the new laptop is still Wireless G, so how can I get Windows Media Center to work on the xbox 360 without having the laptop wired to the router? The xbox360 is wired, not wireless,

Optical SATA Drives

May 20, 2008

My suspicions started off on the DVD-R drive I was using, then moved to my motherboard, then to my SATA controller drivers, and now finally lie on Windows Vista itself (dozens of hours of troubleshooting, adding and removing hardware, and re-installing Vista and XP led me to this conclusion).

The S203N worked completely in XP. In Vista, it works "almost" completely. The catch is that when you put a disc in the drive, the volume label in Windows Explorer does not update (nor does the drive icon, or more importantly, the right-click context menu). Sometimes it recognizes data discs as blank, because of this. However, either rebooting the system, or simply logging out and back in (even easier) will "force" the drive to refresh (volume label, icon, and all).............

Wireless Connects Even If Wired Connection Is Available

May 26, 2008

I am running Vista SP1. When I turn on the computer with an ethernet cable attached and a wireless connection available, Vista will connect both the wired and wireless connections. This leads to a conflict and networking will not work until I turn off one of the connections. I then need to manually turn off the wireless, at which point the wired connections works. This did not happen on this computer when I ran XP.

I thought this might just be an idiosyncricy of this computer since I have not seen any discussion about the problem but I got ths same thing happening when trying to troubleshoot another laptop.

Optical Drive Doesn't Work

Dec 28, 2008

This seems to be common—the optical drive doesn't work. I'd like to detail more symptoms, though, that might help form a real fix for those whom the solution at The CD drive or the DVD drive does not work as expected on a computer that you upgraded to Windows Vista wouldn't work, as it didn't for me (Upperfilter and Lowerfilter values don't exist in my registry).

Upon a clean installation of Vista, the optical drive works fine. After installing the whole slew of current updates, it stops working. I didn't figure this was a thread for the Windows Updates forum, though. When putting in a disc, the drive goes to work (illuminated busy light and the sound of the drive spinning) for a bit, then turns off and on continuously, freezing the computer until the disc is ejected. A disc left in the drive upon start-up will work correctly. Once I open the drive, however, that's when it no longer works, whether I load the same or different disc. So my question is, is there a way to fix this? Other solutions, like uninstalling the drive in the device manager and rebooting, haven't worked for me.

Installing Xbox 360 Wired Controller

May 12, 2008

I was having a small driver problem when connecting the Xbox 360 wired controller to my Vista x64 Home Premium machine. There were two instances of the controller in the Device Manager:

1. Xbox 360 Controller for Windows
2. Controller (XBOX 360 For Windows)

I downloaded the drivers for the controller from the MS site: Download Gaming Software. Once I installed the MS drivers, the device "Xbox 360 Controller for Windows" was successfully installed, but the other device "Controller (XBOX 360 For Windows)" would not install the necessary driver. Even Windows Update couldn't find the appropriate drivers for it...........

LAN Setup Temporary Wired Ethernet Network

Feb 6, 2009

I provide the technical support for an international photographic competition and this involves setting up a temporary wired Ethernet network to interconnect several laptops during our entry processing or judging sessions. This network uses a small 5-port Fast Ethernet switch and fixed IP addresses.

I only used laptops running Windows XP and everything was fine. I'm now trying to add a new laptop running Vista Home Premium and am hitting problems due to my total lack of any previous Vista experience. I have managed to set the IP address on the Vista laptop but it cannot 'see' any other machines on the network and the XP laptops cannot gain access to the Vista machine.

Assign Static IP To Both Wired And Wireless Adapters?

Feb 6, 2009

In my XP days I would assign each of my laptop's network adapters (wired and wireless) its own static IP address. I did this to make it easier to manage things like opening certain ports when using the laptop for gaming over the wired connection only.

Now that I have an all Vista home network consisting of a laptop and a desktop both with Vista Home Premium I am running into trouble assigning these static IPs on the laptop. The primary connection is the wireless and i use the wired connection to game or to transfer files across the network. When I go to set the IP on the wired connection I get the message: "Warning: Multiple default gateways are intended to provide redundancy to a single network such as and Intranet or the Internet. They will not function properly when the gateways are on two separate, disjoint networks (such as one on your intranet and one on the Internet). Do you want to save this configuration?".................

64x Wired Network Dropping Off On Large No Of File Transfer.

Feb 18, 2009

I have a Vista 64x workstation since Nov 08 which has been fine until recently. It has started having network problems when accessing large numbers of files from remote locations. I have a readyNAS network storage device with a number of shares which are mounted as network drives on the PC, wired ethernet. Vista is set up as a private network and set to trust the LAN. The readynas is flawless when accessed from other XP and Vista machines on the LAN.

Recent example, tried loading on photos from a camera, approx 700 files. Went fast at first, but over 300 files, copying would slow to a crawl - 16Kb. While this is happening, other LAN access and internet access becomes intermittent. If I use picasa, which accesses all photos on the remote drive, it'll work for a while but then crawl, only in this case the whole machine slows down. I've tried disabling auto-tuning but that made no difference.
