My understanding is that a ready boost drive is a usb drive that vista uses to dump data to, rather than a hard disk as the readyboost drive is considered to be faster than the hard disk. So if my comment above is true, and I can now buy a 32gb readyboost drive for $70, is it a good idea to install games such as FsX onto a readyboost drive, and get better performance than using a HDD...

Im a noivce to Vista.. I am runing 2 gigs of ram on my laptop a dell (hell) and I have running - 3d max 7, photoshop cs3 extended and usually either IE or flock running to upload my images to the web. I have a 2 gig usb drive hooked up using ready boost - it is allways flashing.. any way to add another usb drive to use as ram? or overclock the 2gig usb stick?
I get the option to "Speed up my system using Readyboost" when i put a (4g) SD card into my computer, but then when i click it, there is no readyboost tab. It is my understanding that I have to enable this in the systems.sfc,buuuut.... I have tried cmd prompting sfc/scannow, and it tells me "You must be an administrator running a console session in order to use the sfc utility." Note: I am not trying to remote connect. I am trying to enable this locally on this laptop on this administrator account. Operating system: Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit

View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently used a VISTA compatible utility (TWEAK VI) to sort and clean my registry. I then added several new applications, including Office 2007. My system has now become very unstable and often freezes, does a blue screen data dump, or just shuts down with no explanation. I am to far removed from the registry clean to reach a restore point for it, so I am hoping there is a repair option on the VISTA install disk, like the XP disk has. So far the only option I find is to reinstall the whole program.

I'm sure he might not be accepting how bad vista is out in the open. but he has a problematic product in his hands.. 1. I have a 120GB hard disk that shows a capacity of 105GB. No problems there--I understand that there's a restore partition and GB vs a billion bytes
2. My hard disk says that 54GB is being used.
3. However when I drag and select all folders in my C: and click properties, I only see 28GB of usage. This leaves an unaccounted-for 26GB.
I've just run disk cleanup and cleaned up my shadow copies before verifying all this. Besides at a MAXIMUM, system restore should only eat 15% of my hard disk (18GB). What explains this loss? How do I fight back and regain my hard-earned gigabytes?
I recently got windows 7 and installed it onto an empty hard drive in my pc. I now have my old hard drive with vista on and my new hard drive with windows 7 on. The only problem is i have hundreds of programs and updates etc on my old hard drive that i really want to use with windows 7 on my new hard drive. View 9 Replies View RelatedI have windows vista ultimate 64.... its on my Ide Maxtor 200GB... which is very noisy and seems to lock up.... So I went and got a Sata Seagate (my prefered brand)... and downloaded the Disk Wizard software from Seagate to migrate drives.... rather than having to lose all my data and operating system etc. In and Ide to Ide situation, this works fine... you simply swap drives over once Disk wizard finishes....
But, when it finished and advised me to swap drives over... disconnecting IDE drive meant when I powered up PC, it would not boot, and gave me error message... NO IDE HDD Found!!! Obviously the boot manager is still looking for IDE drive.... So I then proceeded to use Vista Boot Pro... but this doesnt seem to want to run on my machine?... it shows in Task Manager, but nothing on screen... Not one to give up, I thought I would simply use the Vista Disc to boot to Repair mode....
I diconnected Ide drive... left Sata connected... powered up, disc started, got to Repair window... and it showed a window for drives which was empty... but had two tabs... install drivers and cancel... I chose to install drivers... from my motherboard disc as this contains the Raid drivers.. I assume thats what I need to install.... Anyways... was a waste of time, error message stating they failed... Chose the right ones...Via x64 etc...
I have a hard drive which i took out of an old computer and which has lots of data on it, i bought an external hard drive case and when i connect it to my computers, i have two one vista and one xp it tells me in computer management that it is unallocated, does this mean that i have lost all my data on the hard drive, also it shows up in device manager but not on my computer on the vista computer , and its the same on the xp computer, the blue led light on the external hard drive case stays blue for about 10
seconds then goes off, the hard drive is a seagate barracuda 7200.7 ,160 Gbytes, and the case is from ads technologies usbx-834.
I went to Fry's to have my computer (HP Windows XP) looked at because it wouldn't turn on. I was told that my mother board was fried. So, I bought a new computer (HP pavillion with vista) and a hard drive enclosure and the guys at Fry's put my hard drive in it and told me that I would just need to hook it up, turn it on and drag and drop my files. The old laptop was a Vista Home Premium unit and the new laptop is Ultimate. If it's of any consequence or usefulness, the recovery software I used was from R-Studio. How my files and programs to the new laptop I'm using? I contact Gateway for support and they were useless. Windows was not the issue, it was a faulty hard drive.

I have had a problem where, apparently at random, my hard drive starts running and ties up my laptop to the point nothing will run. This lasts anywhere from 5 to 18 minutes. I have not been able to reproduce this on purpose, but yesterday it happened 3 times when I started either Outlook or Foxfire. Today it happened when I tried to sync my PDA. I have tried to turn off any indexing I can find, but no help. It doesn't always happen every day, but will do it several times a week. I am running on a Toshibe Satellite laptop with Vista Home Premium.
