Installing Auslogics Disk Defrag Boost Speed

Feb 8, 2009

Have you ever heard the expretion "Oh my...Country kids going to town". Well...Country kid is here! I am very new to all this and kinda nurves. Hope I am doing this right. I have a laptop with Vista...recently got me a little virus "360"? or one of those Trojan dudes came over play without mom's permission. Got in lots of trouble!!! Anyway, I think I've got it all off but I am thinking that it needs to be defragged. Yes? No? Last night I decided to go ahead and start defragging. This morning it was still on the screen looking just like it did last night. I thought well stupid! did you click start? So I started it again...not sure what its doing? Know thinking maybe 360 or Trojan didn't go home like I asked them tooooo. Maybe?? I have ran all the disk clean ups and I use McAfee, they say the coast is clear. Here's were you guys come in...I was reading about installing Auslogics Disk Defrag and Auslogics Boost Speed. Do you thing this is something I should do or need?

Auslogics Disk Defrag

Oct 26, 2009

I only recently upgraded to the current version of Auslogics Disk Defrag, where there is a new feature called "Defrag and Optimise". (for more read Auslogics - Frequently Asked Questions). In this there is an option to "Move System Files to beginning of disk" (see Shot1). Does anyone know exactly what this does [in a non-complex explanation]? (I know a bit about computers, but I'm not an "expert"). I'm curious to know does it actually "work" or is it just one of those "overrated features taht doesn't really do anything".

Hard Disk Ready Boost Dump Data

Feb 6, 2009

My understanding is that a ready boost drive is a usb drive that vista uses to dump data to, rather than a hard disk as the readyboost drive is considered to be faster than the hard disk. So if my comment above is true, and I can now buy a 32gb readyboost drive for $70, is it a good idea to install games such as FsX onto a readyboost drive, and get better performance than using a HDD...

Vista Disk Defrag Question

Does Vista (Home Premium, in my case) defrag the hard drive(s) on its

Disk Cleanup & Defrag. Scheduling

May 23, 2008

Disk Cleanup and Defrag. Scheduling (Vista) When I schedule Disk Cleanup, a default schedule says cleanup will be activated when I am logged on. There is another option that says cleanup can be activated when I am logged on or off, but it is grayed out, and I am having difficulty gaining access to that option.

1. So, am I to assume that Disk Cleanup will only activate when I am logged on at the time specified? However, when I schedule Defrag., there are no options.

2. So, am I to assume Defrag. will activate if I am logged on or off at a specified time? Also, the Defrag, window tells you the last time Defrag. was runned.

3. Is there a log or another window I can check to see if Defrag. was completed?

Defrag Check Disk Did Not Work

May 7, 2010

I'm new here, so I'll try not to screw up my post. I have Home Premium Vista, 64bit and 688GB hard drive(size when checking C: drive). I recently checked and it showed less than half full. Then a few days ago I tried saving a file and I got disk full message. I checked the c: drive again and it showed full- no space available, which should not be. I did a defrag, check disk and that did not work. I do remember seeing a warning around that time, but it vanished before I read it all. I think it said a file was not working or was corrupted and may have said something about "Catalyst". I found Catalyst Control Center on my computer, but that seems to be ATI card (graphics card?). I did delete a bunch of junk so it can now function, but latest check still shows only 72 MB available and that can't be.

SP1: After Defrag Show Reduced Disk Space

Mar 23, 2008

I performed a clean install of Windows Vista Ultimate, updated all my drivers, installed SP1, and loaded all my applications. When finished, I had about 114GB of free space being reported. I ran defrag and after about 4-5 hours of running, the free space on that volume was reduced to 98GB. I did a clean disk and then a check disk afterwards and nothing changed. I just performed a defrag using the command line using the "-w" option and now I'm down to 90GB. Does anyone know what is going on?

Scheduling Disk Defrag, Task Failed

Oct 20, 2009

Firstly I have checked this forum (and others) for the solution finding similar problems but still no joy. I am trying to schedule Vista defrag to run at night. However it doesn't run (or at least says it doesn't run) when scheduled to - in fact I don't think it runs at all(it says "never" in the defrag control panel against "last run"). I tested to see if the schedule works however in Task Scheduler it says that the task failed. I have tried deleting / disabling task in TS (but it reappears on reboot) and making sure that the properties in the TS task are ok, as well as "running" the task in TS all to no avail. I've seen this but all the talk of "command lines" etc baffles me!

Speed Up Disk Intensive Applications With A RAM Drive

May 31, 2010

If your computer has some RAM to spare, RAM drives are perfect for increasing the performance of any application that must read and write a lot of data. Using a special kernel mode driver along with system memory, a temporary RAM drive can be created that is significantly faster than traditional storage. Spindle based hard drives found in almost every computer have a maximum read and write speed of around 100 MB per second. The performances of RAM drives are only limited by the speed of the memory and chipset. That results in read and writes speeds well above 1 GB per second and on high end systems much faster.

There are a lot of different ways to create a RAM drive. The method that I’m going to show you will use a free utility called RAMDisk that will allow you to create a RAM drive up to 4GB (assuming you have more than 4GB of RAM in your PC).....

Memory Speed: Can't Stop Wondering If The Difference In Speed WOULD Matter

Apr 13, 2008

I just bought a new pc with Vista Home Premium, it came with: 1GB PC2-6400 DDR2 SDRAM, expandable to 4GB. I wanted more memory so I bought a 2GB kit PC2-*5300* DDR2 SDRAM, because it was on sale for $60. The 6400 speed would have cost me over $200. The salesman assured me it would work fine and I wouldn't notice any difference. I installed it when I got home and everything works great, no problems. But I still can't stop wondering if the difference in speed WOULD matter. Can anyone explain, or provide a link explaining, when, if ever, I would benefit from the faster memory. I mostly use my PC for surfing the web, email, and some photo editing.

Auslogics Registry Defragment And System Restore Just Don't Play Well Together

Apr 22, 2008

I know that few of you bother with Restore Points. It's something I play around with for the experience. But I have found out through two reinstalls and more BSODs than I can count that on "my" machine SP1, Auslogics reg. defrag and System Restore just don't play well together! The only way I could get my system to not crash on boot today was to start in safe, uninstall A.R.D. and restore to the only point I had left.

Slow Internet Speed:speed Goes Down To 300 Kbps

Sep 5, 2008

I have Vista x64 Ultimate and I'm having internet connection issues. My laptop is the HP Pavillion dv7. My ISP tells me everything is fine on his end. I have a router (Linksys model BEFW11S4) 2.4 Ghz - 802.11b. When I connect the wire from my modem directly to my laptop, I get internet speeds of 900 Kbps. But when I use the router, the speed goes down to 300 Kbps. Is there a setting in Vista that could be doing this? According to Linksys, I should be able to attain 900 Kbps with the router. The laptop comes with a wireless adapter (Intel Wi-Fi Link 5100AGN).

Installing Windows Use "Operating System Reinstall Disk"

Mar 23, 2008

My sister just bought a new computer that came with Windows Vista Ultimate 32BIT. She bought her computer from Dell and about a year ago I had bought a computer from dell that came with Windows XP Pro. I would really like to have Vista on this computer and I was wondering if it was possible to use the "Operating System Reinstall Disk" to install Windows Vista Ultimate onto my computer. Neither of us bought cheap systems and with the amount of money we both paid it almost seems like it shouldn't matter that I would be able to do this.

But obviously thats probably not the case. But anyway, I was wondering if their was a limit to how many times I could use this disk and CD key. I was told it was two times, but I'm not sure and I don't want to try to install it and then not be able to use my computer because I'd have to buy another CD key or product license whatever. If anyone could answer my question: Will I be able to install this with no problems and not having to buy another Vista Ultimate and at the same time still have the CD work if one of us should need to reinstall Vista in case something goes wrong?
