No Ready Boost Tab

Feb 6, 2009

I get the option to "Speed up my system using Readyboost" when i put a (4g) SD card into my computer, but then when i click it, there is no readyboost tab. It is my understanding that I have to enable this in the systems.sfc,buuuut.... I have tried cmd prompting sfc/scannow, and it tells me "You must be an administrator running a console session in order to use the sfc utility." Note: I am not trying to remote connect. I am trying to enable this locally on this laptop on this administrator account. Operating system: Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit

Ready Boost Size

May 31, 2009

I have a laptop with 2Gb, Vista Ultimate, and an SD slot I use for ReadyBoost. I currently have a fast 4Gb SD card, but noticed the price on 16Gb SD cards has gone way down. Would there be any benefit to replacing my 4Gb with a 16Gb, given that I only have 2Gb of RAM? Could ReadyBoost make use of it all? Would I notice any difference?

Boost Your Performance With ReadyBoost

Feb 1, 2007

ReadyBoost helps your computer by giving it more high-speed memory.  If your computer is running low on RAM then it has to kick a lot of applications out of high-speed physical memory to the paging file on your hard drive.  This usually results in a big hit in performance and increased activity on your hard drive. ReadyBoost helps this situation by giving Windows an alternative to having to stick data into the slow paging file on your hard drive. Instead, ReadyBoost uses a USB storage device that is faster than a hard disk. This results in a performance boost because Windows will have a high speed alternative than using the slow paging file on your hard drive....

Ready Boost Usb/flash Card

Mar 17, 2009

I installed Vista after my XP became corrupt (long story...). Have noticed that it's using 510-560 MB RAM at idle! I have a total of 1024 RAM. If I get a 4GB ready boost compatible USB/flash card will it make a difference or is it a waste of money and only to be used if Vista is chewing up more than 1024 MB?

I just need to know if it is vista that has changed my graphics card and if it did how can i fix it. Also for Hardware Acceleration, i can not turn it on because i do not have the troubleshoot option in my display settings. My nero will not burn any dvd disc's due to that.

Don't Boost Usb Storage Devices Replace Ntfs.sys

Aug 11, 2008

Recently, after varying times of general computer usage (internet, e-mail) ranging from 5 minutes to an hour, I'll get a BSOD, with the above title. I'll attach the dump files, and include the code from it below. I've tried some troubleshooting of my own. I've run memtest86+ on each of my 4 1-gig RAM modules, all clean. I've run Prime95, clean. I've installed new video drivers. I've run a diskcheck, and used Western Digital's diagnostic utility, clean. The culprit always is ntfs.sys. Should I try to repair my windows, or replace the ntfs.sys with a new one?. Also, I don't have any readboost of USB storage devices plugged in.

Code: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (50) Invalid system memory was referenced. This cannot be protected by try-except, it must be protected by a Probe. Typically the address is just plain bad or it is pointing at freed memory. Arguments:

Arg1: fffffa610b3a9ff8, memory referenced.
Arg2: 0000000000000000, value 0 = read operation, 1 = write operation.
Arg3: fffffa6001219130, If non-zero, the instruction address which referenced the bad memory address.
Arg4: 0000000000000005, (reserved) ............

Hard Disk Ready Boost Dump Data

Feb 6, 2009

My understanding is that a ready boost drive is a usb drive that vista uses to dump data to, rather than a hard disk as the readyboost drive is considered to be faster than the hard disk. So if my comment above is true, and I can now buy a 32gb readyboost drive for $70, is it a good idea to install games such as FsX onto a readyboost drive, and get better performance than using a HDD...

PC Too Slow For Gaming?

One game I tried recently was Callof Juarez. A friend brought it over to try and see if it would work after I told him I have trouble getting games to work. I can only find generic Aspire manuals online, nothing specific to my model.

I have tried to see what kind of video card is installed but in my device manager, under sound, audio controllers it only describes the audio cards, no mention of video card. I therefore assume it is a generic card that probably is not capable of gaming, BUT Acer did give me a nice screen saver that shows a clip on gaming, (b-astard-o's)...........

SP1 Gaming Performance

Mar 23, 2008

Just wondering if anyone has had any issues and/or problems since SP1 was released today.I know it may be too early to tell what with the manufacturers rushing to create drivers that will actually take advantage of the over 550 hotfixes incorperated into SP1, but so far for me at least I have seen at least a 20% increase in overall gaming performance and system response. One main thing I've seen that has not improved is any source games. It seems the source engine is either not a fan of vista, or the 8800 series cards. But as for games such as World of Warcraft and Unreal Tournament III, all seem to have an increase in FPS and load times. If anyone has a positive or negative comments for SP1, please let me know; very curious to see what Microsoft has accomplished/screwed up.

Gaming Technology On Vista

Mar 2, 2007

The progression of software and gaming technology:

As times goes on, technology inevitably advances. Back in the 1980s, words like megabyte were considered to represent a large amount of space on a hard drive or in total system ram. In the mid 1990s, we began to see megabytes in mass numbers when it came to RAM. At present, we are in the midst of the first decade in the 21st century: Hard drives are just now begining to be meassured in terabytes and ram is being meassured in multiple gigs.

With the increase in horsepower and ranchspace that fuels PCs as they advance, software becomes hungrier and hungrier of these resources. If you try to run Windows XP on a PC built for Windows 95, you will note that the entire system may come to a hault. Likewise, if you attempt to run Windows Vista and DirectX10 games on a machine built for Windows XP, you will encounter similar results!

This means that with each new installment of Windows that there is a new set of standards for system requirements to run the operating system. Windows Vista is more hungry than Windows XP when it comes to your system's resources. Everything you run will run slower on Vista due to the simple fact that Vista uses more of your system, so, do not post your frame rates and ask us, "why are they lower!?".

Windows XP was designed to run with a reccomended 512mb of ram and an optimal 2gb of ram for gaming. If you disagree with me, try running Battlefield 2142 in Titan Game Mode on a 64 person server with maximum detail if you think windows XP doesn't want 2gb of ram for optimal performance. When converting to windows vista it is important to note, Vista uses more of your base system, so, your system should be proportionately stronger in order to strong the performance dip!..................

Basically from what i've read its something to do with Vistas wireless that searches for a new and better connection every 60seconds. My computer is NOT connected to the router, it has a 3/5 signal strength and my ping is OK. Its just these lag spikes that are killing me. I've tried VISTA Anti-LAg and the WLAN optimizer. Nothing works at all. Anyone have ANY other suggestions as to what i can do to get rid of these 2-5second lag spike/freezes with my gaming? Im running VISTA Premium x64bit...
