Slow Boot Up Time: Virus Scans, Defrag Hhd, Scan Regestry With REGESTRY BOOSTER 2009, Defrag Regestry
Sep 1, 2009
i am having really slow boot ups lately on my laptop. i have done things such as virus scans, defrag hhd, scan regestry with REGESTRY BOOSTER 2009, defrag regestry. i also have no start up programs in my strat up folder. Problem is that i could start from dead start to a fully loaded desktop in 98 secs....now it takes 124 secs to do the same thing. where it takes the longest is at the boot screen i just watch it load then the windows logo comes up and it smooth sailing from there. i would say it takes about 8-12 secs after the windows logo to get to desktop.

I'm having a problem with HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet001ControlClass{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} ALL regestry keys are MISSING.
I use a R70 Samsung Laptop (which too many people handle with too much freedom...), WinVista Home Premium
Curiously enough my cd drives work (more or less) but appear as "unkown" in the task manager, and I'm unable to install the correct drivers..., iTunes, WinMedia, all sorts of programes are complaining that something is wrong with my cd drives.

I read in one of the posts that 3d party defrager could mess up start speed and comp performance, whereas vista's built-in defrager keeps certain files in ceratin places to increase efficiency and speed.

I check defragmenter regularly and each time it says my file performance is good...no need to defrag at this time. Should I defrag anyway? BTW, I'm running McAfee which has a disk defrag app. and it always gives me the same message...No need to defrag at this time.

Vista Ultimate 64 Crashed, Tried Recovery Dvd, Start-up Repair, Ng, Can't Get Into Safe Mode Or Command Prompt, Tried To Reinstall, Won't Allow Upgrade "upgrade Disablied, Must Be From Windows", But I Can't Get Into Windows. I Don't Want To Do A Clean Install To Much On There. It Also Seems My Restore Poits Are Gone. This Is After Diskkeeper Did A Boot Defrag.

I am using this program to clean up my registry and it seems to work fine except the errors keep coming back. I can do a scan, clean up all the errors and then shut down and start up and I have a new 20 registry error list and most or all of the errors relate to "bad path for the value" and its windows files that seem to be at fault. I don't understand why Microsoft operating system would create registry errors on a startup, before anything has been installed etc. is RegistryBooster misleading me or what. I am running win7 but it did the same thing on vista home premium so I think the question is valid for this group.

I used to be able to boot up in no time. The microsoft vista "lightbar" used to scroll left to right about 5 times. Now, it scrolls 43 times.
I did the Visual basic test that I found here and my boot up time is 155 seconds. I do know part of my problem is my antivirus but looking around I found more problems.I have major bootup errors in the event log.

"If your system is a Microsoft product and you have your 20 digit registration number, you can go to the Microsoft web site, and they will do a free scan and most likely remove any known virus such as Trojan win32.murlo." Is this true, and where would I find my 20 digit registration and what is the web site?

I save entire disk images to a second internal hard drive that is partitioned just for backing up entire images of my primary hard drive.
Windows analyzed and suggests defragging but should I defrag the backups? The suggestion to defrag is not for my primary hard drive.

I have run Defrag several times on this computer and watched it finish. Is there a way to get the defrag tool in Vista to report the file fragmentation? Why doesn't Vista defragment the volume fully when it is run? When I switch over to the XP side on dual boot, I run XP's defrag tool. XP's Defrag tool always reports that "I need to defrag this disk". Is it OK to defrag the Vista Volume with Windows XP Defrag? What up with this? Why doesn't Vista work as well as XP?

Is there a way to defragment offline (not in the windows operating system), similar to the way chkdsk /r is done to the operating system's partition/HDD offline(right before windows boots)?

From what I can see, this Vista Defrag will only defrag c: drive. What about all of the other data drives?
I agree with all of the others. With no way to verify, or manually select,
the individual drives I can see where we will be having data loss without
even seeing any warnings.
Isn't there a way to open a Management Control Panel for some kind of control over this "foolproof" application?

when i ask it to defrag (Vista), it starts and never quits. little circle just keeps on rotating happily. left it going a couple of times for, say, 10 hours maybe. since it doesn't show percentages anymore (or I can't find them) not sure where we are getting hung up. I've done lots of video editing and having some problems lately in those programs so think I really need a good defragment...or I at least need to see if fragmentation might be the cause (if there is somewhere I can look to determine this please let me know...if not fragmented then problem is probably with video programs,

I located an old hard drive stored on a shelf the other day and connected it to my Vista machine with a USB dongle. I decided to defrag it (350Gb). Now, I already know that Vista's defrag provides NO indication of progress other than that pretty lame statement that "this may take a few minutes to a few hours". I've seen mention of other defraggers here in this NG and am wondering if any of them provide visual progress indications. Previous OS's used either marching colored blocks, or slowly moving vertical bands in a window. Vista's, on the other hand, simply does nothing to indicate progress. Do any of the others provide any performance boost (i.e. faster) as well as any indication of progress?

I only recently upgraded to the current version of Auslogics Disk Defrag, where there is a new feature called "Defrag and Optimise". (for more read Auslogics - Frequently Asked Questions). In this there is an option to "Move System Files to beginning of disk" (see Shot1). Does anyone know exactly what this does [in a non-complex explanation]? (I know a bit about computers, but I'm not an "expert"). I'm curious to know does it actually "work" or is it just one of those "overrated features taht doesn't really do anything".

I recently purchased a new computer. While surfing last night I had noticed that when I looked at the defrag drive my computer said that it had last been defragged on Jan.of 2005. Do you find this (as I do) somewhat strange. I have contacted the store and the computer manufacturer. Does it seem like maybe they sold me a refurbished computer when I was supposed to have bought a new one. Just looking for an opinion.

Does Vista (Home Premium, in my case) defrag the hard drive(s) on its
own, without being scheduled to do so? I know I can manually force a
defrag, but what about unscheduled defrags?

Disk Cleanup and Defrag. Scheduling (Vista) When I schedule Disk Cleanup, a default schedule says cleanup will be activated when I am logged on. There is another option that says cleanup can be activated when I am logged on or off, but it is grayed out, and I am having difficulty gaining access to that option.
1. So, am I to assume that Disk Cleanup will only activate when I am logged on at the time specified? However, when I schedule Defrag., there are no options.
2. So, am I to assume Defrag. will activate if I am logged on or off at a specified time? Also, the Defrag, window tells you the last time Defrag. was runned.
3. Is there a log or another window I can check to see if Defrag. was completed?

What is the administrator command prompt for 'defrag.exe' in 'cmd'? I am being asked when trying to open defrag.exe in cmd. It seems windows defrag was hijacked by DiskeeperLite, a downloaded program I thought was free, but turned out to be a mistake. When I want to run defrag now, I am asked to reinstall it via add or remove programs, which is not available in my Vista Home Premium, SP2, 32 bit. Is there a way to recover it? If not, that's not all bad, because I have 'Defraggler', which works quite nicely.

Is there a way to perform an analysis of the fragmentation level of a drive in Vista Home Premium? I miss being able to see a graphic representation of a disk's fragmentation. Also, previous versions of Windows provided the user a progress bar than informed them of the status of the defrag program when it was running. It appears that Home Premium runs in the background and one never gets a "defragmentation complete" dialog box with options to see a report. I've tried running it manually and not closing the Run dialog box, but it seems to run for hours without any feedback to the user.
