Vista Disk Defrag Question
Mar 26, 2008Does Vista (Home Premium, in my case) defrag the hard drive(s) on its
own, without being scheduled to do so? I know I can manually force a
defrag, but what about unscheduled defrags?

The Updated Free Version 2.1.1.30 of Auslogics Disk Defrag was released 27 July, and is available for download through CNet Download Center here;

The graphics are improving all the time, and the software works like a charm.
I only recently upgraded to the current version of Auslogics Disk Defrag, where there is a new feature called "Defrag and Optimise". (for more read Auslogics - Frequently Asked Questions). In this there is an option to "Move System Files to beginning of disk" (see Shot1). Does anyone know exactly what this does [in a non-complex explanation]? (I know a bit about computers, but I'm not an "expert"). I'm curious to know does it actually "work" or is it just one of those "overrated features taht doesn't really do anything".

View 9 Replies View RelatedDisk Cleanup and Defrag. Scheduling (Vista) When I schedule Disk Cleanup, a default schedule says cleanup will be activated when I am logged on. There is another option that says cleanup can be activated when I am logged on or off, but it is grayed out, and I am having difficulty gaining access to that option.
1. So, am I to assume that Disk Cleanup will only activate when I am logged on at the time specified? However, when I schedule Defrag., there are no options.
2. So, am I to assume Defrag. will activate if I am logged on or off at a specified time? Also, the Defrag, window tells you the last time Defrag. was runned.
3. Is there a log or another window I can check to see if Defrag. was completed?
I'm new here, so I'll try not to screw up my post. I have Home Premium Vista, 64bit and 688GB hard drive(size when checking C: drive). I recently checked and it showed less than half full. Then a few days ago I tried saving a file and I got disk full message. I checked the c: drive again and it showed full- no space available, which should not be. I did a defrag, check disk and that did not work. I do remember seeing a warning around that time, but it vanished before I read it all. I think it said a file was not working or was corrupted and may have said something about "Catalyst". I found Catalyst Control Center on my computer, but that seems to be ATI card (graphics card?). I did delete a bunch of junk so it can now function, but latest check still shows only 72 MB available and that can't be.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI performed a clean install of Windows Vista Ultimate, updated all my drivers, installed SP1, and loaded all my applications. When finished, I had about 114GB of free space being reported. I ran defrag and after about 4-5 hours of running, the free space on that volume was reduced to 98GB. I did a clean disk and then a check disk afterwards and nothing changed. I just performed a defrag using the command line using the "-w" option and now I'm down to 90GB. Does anyone know what is going on?
View 5 Replies View RelatedFirstly I have checked this forum (and others) for the solution finding similar problems but still no joy. I am trying to schedule Vista defrag to run at night. However it doesn't run (or at least says it doesn't run) when scheduled to - in fact I don't think it runs at all(it says "never" in the defrag control panel against "last run"). I tested to see if the schedule works however in Task Scheduler it says that the task failed. I have tried deleting / disabling task in TS (but it reappears on reboot) and making sure that the properties in the TS task are ok, as well as "running" the task in TS all to no avail. I've seen this but all the talk of "command lines" etc baffles me!

I have a laptop with Vista...recently got me a little virus "360"? or one of those Trojan dudes came over play without mom's permission. Got in lots of trouble!!! Anyway, I think I've got it all off but I am thinking that it needs to be defragged. Yes? No? Last night I decided to go ahead and start defragging. This morning it was still on the screen looking just like it did last night. I thought well stupid! did you click start? So I started it again...not sure what its doing? Know thinking maybe 360 or Trojan didn't go home like I asked them tooooo. Maybe?? I have ran all the disk clean ups and I use McAfee, they say the coast is clear. View 9 Replies View RelatedI have run Defrag several times on this computer and watched it finish. Is there a way to get the defrag tool in Vista to report the file fragmentation? Why doesn't Vista defragment the volume fully when it is run? When I switch over to the XP side on dual boot, I run XP's defrag tool. XP's Defrag tool always reports that "I need to defrag this disk". Is it OK to defrag the Vista Volume with Windows XP Defrag? What up with this? Why doesn't Vista work as well as XP?
View 7 Replies View Relatedwhy there is no defrag progress graph in vista (like the one there was in xp). The defrag just has a scheduler or defrag now and then there is no way of knowing how far along it is. Any thoughts would be welcome.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI check defragmenter regularly and each time it says my file performance is good...no need to defrag at this time. Should I defrag anyway? BTW, I'm running McAfee which has a disk defrag app. and it always gives me the same message...No need to defrag at this time.

View 5 Replies View Relatedi am having really slow boot ups lately on my laptop. i have done things such as virus scans, defrag hhd, scan regestry with REGESTRY BOOSTER 2009, defrag regestry. i also have no start up programs in my strat up folder. Problem is that i could start from dead start to a fully loaded desktop in 98 secs....now it takes 124 secs to do the same thing. where it takes the longest is at the boot screen i just watch it load then the windows logo comes up and it smooth sailing from there. i would say it takes about 8-12 secs after the windows logo to get to desktop.
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy Disk is split into 2 partitions, Vista (C: ) and Data (E, each is about 70 Gb. I do not use the Data partition. I want to delete it and allow Vista(C to use all 140 Gb. The Help pages suggest that if I delete (or reduce the size of) "Data", the free space becomes unallocated? Can I repartition the disk to allow Vista C: to acces all 140 Gb?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI need to replace my wife's motherboard, and I am trying to minimize the amount of change. She is currently running XP, but the hardware is old enough that I cannot simply swap the MBs, because a new board will need a different HAL. I was thinking about installing XP and migrating applications. I was wondering what would happen if I cloned her disk to a SATA disk and installed a Vista upgrade on top of the XP disk. I would run setup and provide the appropriate drivers at the F6 prompt. She has used Vista on occasion when we are out-of-town. I have a separate userID on my laptop that is configured to look as much as possible like XP. The question is whether a Vista upgrade would work on top of an XP image that used a lot of older hardware.
View 4 Replies View RelatedSome trouble with IE & FireFox yesterday & I've
come to the conclusion it's probably best if I reinstall windows.
I don't care about losing everything & starting from scratch as
everything important I have on a seperate hard drive anyway.
The only problem is, I was never given a Windows Vista disk with this
laptop & don't think I have ever had one.
How would I go about either doing a repair installation or just doing a
complete Windows reinstallation without a start-up disk?
The disk defragmentor that came with Vista shows only a circulating icon as it progresses. Is there a defragmentor which shows a) how badly the disk looks iniitally and b) how the defragmenting is progressing (as in my old XP system?

View 8 Replies View RelatedFor some reason, I cannot see a 1TB hard disk in Vista Explorer. There are no relevant messages in the event logs etc. I can save data to it (via apps, word, excel, downloads etc). I just cannot see it in windows when I go to my computer. Also, can't seem to find anything pertinent on the web, lost about a vista drive not being seen by windows 7 (vice versa), but not what I am looking for. My concern is that if Windows won't display the drive, it may be going bad and it's only 6 months old. Any pointer(s)
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm having difficulty in parsing this quote from Microsofts own website "The 64-bit editions of Windows Vista&8212;available for all editions of Windows Vista except Starter" Now, I have an x64 CPU architecture PC, 4 GB of system ram, and only the 32-bit version of Vista Premium* pre-installed*. And unless I'm mistaken, I'm only entitled to a Recovery disk that I create or order from Hewlett Packard. I don't want to buy an upgrade or full install of the 64-bit Ultimate Edition. However, I do want the 64-bit version of the Premium Edition instead. Microsoft says that I can get a 64-bit edition here: Even if it requires a custom install (AKA "fresh install), I'm OK with that. Can I obtain the 64-bit Premium Edition (if it exists)? Has anyone done this?
