i am having really slow boot ups lately on my laptop. i have done things such as virus scans, defrag hhd, scan regestry with REGESTRY BOOSTER 2009, defrag regestry. i also have no start up programs in my strat up folder. Problem is that i could start from dead start to a fully loaded desktop in 98 secs....now it takes 124 secs to do the same thing. where it takes the longest is at the boot screen i just watch it load then the windows logo comes up and it smooth sailing from there. i would say it takes about 8-12 secs after the windows logo to get to desktop.

I just tryed this out on my xp machine, and wonderd if they are ok to use PageDefrag. Can this be used in vista also.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have run Defrag several times on this computer and watched it finish. Is there a way to get the defrag tool in Vista to report the file fragmentation? Why doesn't Vista defragment the volume fully when it is run? When I switch over to the XP side on dual boot, I run XP's defrag tool. XP's Defrag tool always reports that "I need to defrag this disk". Is it OK to defrag the Vista Volume with Windows XP Defrag? What up with this? Why doesn't Vista work as well as XP?

View 4 Replies View RelatedFrom what I can see, this Vista Defrag will only defrag c: drive. What about all of the other data drives?
I agree with all of the others. With no way to verify, or manually select,
the individual drives I can see where we will be having data loss without
even seeing any warnings.
Isn't there a way to open a Management Control Panel for some kind of control over this "foolproof" application?

View 5 Replies View Relatedwhen i ask it to defrag (Vista), it starts and never quits. little circle just keeps on rotating happily. left it going a couple of times for, say, 10 hours maybe. since it doesn't show percentages anymore (or I can't find them) not sure where we are getting hung up. I've done lots of video editing and having some problems lately in those programs so think I really need a good defragment...or I at least need to see if fragmentation might be the cause (if there is somewhere I can look to determine this please let me know...if not fragmented then problem is probably with video programs,
View 6 Replies View RelatedI located an old hard drive stored on a shelf the other day and connected it to my Vista machine with a USB dongle. I decided to defrag it (350Gb). Now, I already know that Vista's defrag provides NO indication of progress other than that pretty lame statement that "this may take a few minutes to a few hours". I've seen mention of other defraggers here in this NG and am wondering if any of them provide visual progress indications. Previous OS's used either marching colored blocks, or slowly moving vertical bands in a window. Vista's, on the other hand, simply does nothing to indicate progress. Do any of the others provide any performance boost (i.e. faster) as well as any indication of progress?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI only recently upgraded to the current version of Auslogics Disk Defrag, where there is a new feature called "Defrag and Optimise". (for more read Auslogics - Frequently Asked Questions). In this there is an option to "Move System Files to beginning of disk" (see Shot1). Does anyone know exactly what this does [in a non-complex explanation]? (I know a bit about computers, but I'm not an "expert"). I'm curious to know does it actually "work" or is it just one of those "overrated features taht doesn't really do anything".
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased a new computer. While surfing last night I had noticed that when I looked at the defrag drive my computer said that it had last been defragged on Jan.of 2005. Do you find this (as I do) somewhat strange. I have contacted the store and the computer manufacturer. Does it seem like maybe they sold me a refurbished computer when I was supposed to have bought a new one. Just looking for an opinion.
View 7 Replies View RelatedDoes Vista (Home Premium, in my case) defrag the hard drive(s) on its
own, without being scheduled to do so? I know I can manually force a
defrag, but what about unscheduled defrags?
I'm using the Home Premium version of Vista and my disk defrag just keeps analyzing my disks and never defrags them. Its worked before but now this has started to happen.
View 9 Replies View RelatedDisk Cleanup and Defrag. Scheduling (Vista) When I schedule Disk Cleanup, a default schedule says cleanup will be activated when I am logged on. There is another option that says cleanup can be activated when I am logged on or off, but it is grayed out, and I am having difficulty gaining access to that option.
1. So, am I to assume that Disk Cleanup will only activate when I am logged on at the time specified? However, when I schedule Defrag., there are no options.
2. So, am I to assume Defrag. will activate if I am logged on or off at a specified time? Also, the Defrag, window tells you the last time Defrag. was runned.
3. Is there a log or another window I can check to see if Defrag. was completed?
What is the administrator command prompt for 'defrag.exe' in 'cmd'? I am being asked when trying to open defrag.exe in cmd. It seems windows defrag was hijacked by DiskeeperLite, a downloaded program I thought was free, but turned out to be a mistake. When I want to run defrag now, I am asked to reinstall it via add or remove programs, which is not available in my Vista Home Premium, SP2, 32 bit. Is there a way to recover it? If not, that's not all bad, because I have 'Defraggler', which works quite nicely.
View 9 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to perform an analysis of the fragmentation level of a drive in Vista Home Premium? I miss being able to see a graphic representation of a disk's fragmentation. Also, previous versions of Windows provided the user a progress bar than informed them of the status of the defrag program when it was running. It appears that Home Premium runs in the background and one never gets a "defragmentation complete" dialog box with options to see a report. I've tried running it manually and not closing the Run dialog box, but it seems to run for hours without any feedback to the user.

View 9 Replies View Relatedi recently picked up the habit of defragging my windows 7 laptop my brother, however, is not a computer person and has a vista home premium 32 bit laptop.
i used defraggler and analyzed the computer and it was 22% fragmented i'm all ready to hit the defrag button but there is only 1 gb free.
btw this is on the main drive with WINDOWS on it and all main files
so with 1 GB free, can i defrag the C: Drive?
why there is no defrag progress graph in vista (like the one there was in xp). The defrag just has a scheduler or defrag now and then there is no way of knowing how far along it is. Any thoughts would be welcome.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm new here, so I'll try not to screw up my post. I have Home Premium Vista, 64bit and 688GB hard drive(size when checking C: drive). I recently checked and it showed less than half full. Then a few days ago I tried saving a file and I got disk full message. I checked the c: drive again and it showed full- no space available, which should not be. I did a defrag, check disk and that did not work. I do remember seeing a warning around that time, but it vanished before I read it all. I think it said a file was not working or was corrupted and may have said something about "Catalyst". I found Catalyst Control Center on my computer, but that seems to be ATI card (graphics card?). I did delete a bunch of junk so it can now function, but latest check still shows only 72 MB available and that can't be.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI performed a clean install of Windows Vista Ultimate, updated all my drivers, installed SP1, and loaded all my applications. When finished, I had about 114GB of free space being reported. I ran defrag and after about 4-5 hours of running, the free space on that volume was reduced to 98GB. I did a clean disk and then a check disk afterwards and nothing changed. I just performed a defrag using the command line using the "-w" option and now I'm down to 90GB. Does anyone know what is going on?
View 5 Replies View RelatedFirstly I have checked this forum (and others) for the solution finding similar problems but still no joy. I am trying to schedule Vista defrag to run at night. However it doesn't run (or at least says it doesn't run) when scheduled to - in fact I don't think it runs at all(it says "never" in the defrag control panel against "last run"). I tested to see if the schedule works however in Task Scheduler it says that the task failed. I have tried deleting / disabling task in TS (but it reappears on reboot) and making sure that the properties in the TS task are ok, as well as "running" the task in TS all to no avail. I've seen this but all the talk of "command lines" etc baffles me!
