Oh yes prog was called Defrag from PC Mech. It worked like this ran prog it then rebooted system and on startup ran chkdsk then defraged volume. Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, I have a car.... But is there not a way to create a script file that would reboot system run chkdsk and defrag then boot into OS. I will also be shuting of defrag I do not want it running all the time.
View 9 Repliesi am having really slow boot ups lately on my laptop. i have done things such as virus scans, defrag hhd, scan regestry with REGESTRY BOOSTER 2009, defrag regestry. i also have no start up programs in my strat up folder. Problem is that i could start from dead start to a fully loaded desktop in 98 secs....now it takes 124 secs to do the same thing. where it takes the longest is at the boot screen i just watch it load then the windows logo comes up and it smooth sailing from there. i would say it takes about 8-12 secs after the windows logo to get to desktop.

1. Open a DOS window.
2. Change to the folder I want to receive the file into.
3. enter "ftp ftp.blahblahblah.com".
4. When prompted as follows, enter a User ID. The following 4 lines of text are received, after a .2 second to maybe 10 or more second wait, then wanting a User ID to be entered..........
I gather digital images (via e-mail) from members of our camera club. There are simple specification for filename, size and dimensions, but it’s amazing to variety of errors that are made. The files arrive over several days. I visual check for errors on a flow basis, but sometimes I don’t catch them all. I would like to automate the process of a “final check” of the complete batch before incorporating them into our PowerPoint application for the competition.
My OS is Vista. I know how to produce a list of filenames (Shift/RightClick, Copy as Path, etc), but I don’t know of a way to also capture other file attributes, such as size and dimensions. My idea is to create (maybe a Comma-Separated-Value file that I could import into Excel. Then it should be simple enough to use conditional formatting to flag the cells in error. Actually, filename and dimensions contain subfields, but my idea is to use a text editor on the csv file so that the subfields could be separated and therefore imported into separate cells in Excel.
I've managed to put together a suitable Vista image, resealed and ready to distribute. It does everything I need it to except I can't seem to find a way to do these last two things: I need for Windows Automatic Updates to be turned off and for the user to not get bugged about it. I need for Security Center notifications to be turned off, and the tray icon to not be displayed, for at least the first 3 users created. Please, don't tell me that I shouldn't be doing this, etc., - this is what I'm being directed to accomplish by management. I just need a way to automate it. Right now, when the system unseals it runs an app I wrote that automates a few things before the system auto logs in as the system administrator for a final piece of software to be installed. I'd like for my app to take care of those last two things instead of having the end users perform them manually. WHen vista starts and the usb is plugged in it usually asks if you would like to check for consistency and gives you about 10 seconds to cancel the check (by pressing any key). I was walking towards the computer but was too late and windows went ahead and checked for consistency.......

I have run chkdsk soooo many times, I have also downloaded a registry repair program, defrag, dsk cleanup, and everything imaginable. I want to avoid defrag because I don't want to loose my files and programs.
I powered up my Vista 64 machine tonight and chkdsk starting going berserk. I saw a whole bunch of "deleting index entry" and something about Windows and AMD64. I had no idea what I was even seeing until I did some research, but I'm confused about what's happening. On Vista Home Premium, I've set Chkdsk to run but each time it hangs about three quarters of the way through step 5, at the same cluster each time. I've run the harddisk tests (SMART, surface scan etc) from the computer recovery console and it passes every test OK. If this a physical problem with the drive or a file system one? If it's the latter why can't Chkdsk fix it? It's a new computer should I go through the hassle of returning it to the manufacturer?
P.S. History: it's a brand new Lenovo laptop. When I first switched it on, it gave me that "Vista didn't shut down properly last time" screen, but apart from that everything seemed OK until I got most of the way through all the security updates, cleaning up all the bundled software etc and Windows Update blankly refused to install SP1. I tried a system restore and that told me there was a disk error and to run Chkdsk. Chkdsk refused to run (something about the drive being locked) and in the end I did a factory reset. This is OK in that now all the updates have installed and there are no more errors, but I wanted to double check the disk, so invoked Chkdsk and... see above.
Error check on my HP Laptop that has vista home edition. for some reason it froze at 4% in the first stage (1 of 5), at this point i was able to exit the error check by pressing Escape, i went on and defragmented my computer next and did various virus and spyware cleanups, then i decided to do the error check again, this time the same thing happened but now i am unable to exit the error check. so my question is: is there anything i can do on my own or should i send it in to a professional?

Windows analyzed and suggests defragging but should I defrag the backups? The suggestion to defrag is not for my primary hard drive.

View 5 Replies View Relatedwhen i ask it to defrag (Vista), it starts and never quits. little circle just keeps on rotating happily. left it going a couple of times for, say, 10 hours maybe. since it doesn't show percentages anymore (or I can't find them) not sure where we are getting hung up. I've done lots of video editing and having some problems lately in those programs so think I really need a good defragment...or I at least need to see if fragmentation might be the cause (if there is somewhere I can look to determine this please let me know...if not fragmented then problem is probably with video programs,

Now, I already know that Vista's defrag provides NO indication of progress other than that pretty lame statement that "this may take a few minutes to a few hours". I've seen mention of other defraggers here in this NG and am wondering if any of them provide visual progress indications. Previous OS's used either marching colored blocks, or slowly moving vertical bands in a window. Vista's, on the other hand, simply does nothing to indicate progress. Do any of the others provide any performance boost (i.e. faster) as well as any indication of progress?

(for more read Auslogics - Frequently Asked Questions). In this there is an option to "Move System Files to beginning of disk" (see Shot1). Does anyone know exactly what this does [in a non-complex explanation]? (I know a bit about computers, but I'm not an "expert"). While surfing last night I had noticed that when I looked at the defrag drive my computer said that it had last been defragged on Jan.of 2005. Do you find this (as I do) somewhat strange.
