I read in one of the posts that 3d party defrager could mess up start speed and comp performance, whereas vista's built-in defrager keeps certain files in ceratin places to increase efficiency and speed.

will it affect the Performance of 1 O/S if i install a second O/S on an other Hard Drive/Partition? Yes, or no? For example: Windows Vista 64 bit on HDD-1 & Windows XP 32 bit on HDD-2. Is it better to install the second O/S on an other Partition OR an different HDD? Will there be any Compatibility Problems of the Files? Like when you use MAC and Windows, you can't see MAC Files while MAC can see windows files.

View 4 Replies View Relatedi am having really slow boot ups lately on my laptop. i have done things such as virus scans, defrag hhd, scan regestry with REGESTRY BOOSTER 2009, defrag regestry. i also have no start up programs in my strat up folder. Problem is that i could start from dead start to a fully loaded desktop in 98 secs....now it takes 124 secs to do the same thing. where it takes the longest is at the boot screen i just watch it load then the windows logo comes up and it smooth sailing from there. i would say it takes about 8-12 secs after the windows logo to get to desktop.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI located an old hard drive stored on a shelf the other day and connected it to my Vista machine with a USB dongle. I decided to defrag it (350Gb). Now, I already know that Vista's defrag provides NO indication of progress other than that pretty lame statement that "this may take a few minutes to a few hours". I've seen mention of other defraggers here in this NG and am wondering if any of them provide visual progress indications. Previous OS's used either marching colored blocks, or slowly moving vertical bands in a window. Vista's, on the other hand, simply does nothing to indicate progress. Do any of the others provide any performance boost (i.e. faster) as well as any indication of progress?

While surfing last night I had noticed that when I looked at the defrag drive my computer said that it had last been defragged on Jan.of 2005. Do you find this (as I do) somewhat strange. I have contacted the store and the computer manufacturer. Does it seem like maybe they sold me a refurbished computer when I was supposed to have bought a new one. Just looking for an opinion.

View 6 Replies View RelatedProblem is network bandwidth as measured by the speed test(s) will decrease over time without any changes being made -- it does not matter what time of day either. It is a Vista PC running SP2 and hard wired to a Linksys router (Wireless-G model) and I am a Comcast customer with 30mbps service. Maybe I should mention this PC sits idle for most of the day before the family comes home from school. All of the XP systems in the house do NOT have this problem.
As you can see over the course of 5 days the download speed drops into the 2-3 mbps range (and the upload speeds are greater than the download speeds !! ) The 12mbps measurement was taken after the reboot. The only fix I have found is rebooting the machine --- then performance is as expected for a day or so before it starts to drop again.
I recently went into Change Date & Time Internet time tab and chose a time standard to connect with. After doing that I went onto the internet and connected with time.nist.gov and checked the time. After that I was no longer able to go into the internet time tab. It tells me that time.nist.gov is the time connection and I can't change it. It tells me I need to have permission to do this as administrator. I am the administrator! What goes here?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just installed a fresh Vista x64 on a (temporary, just for the fun/experimenting) SATA disk, while I wait for my new SAS drives to arrive. After the install it all was ok-ish (experience index on the drive was only 2.3, so pretty slow compared to my old XP machine). The rest of my system all shows 5.9's But after fiddling around with new drivers and tips and trick I learned from this forum, it all went downhill from here. Navigation is very sluggish and the boot up time is 445 seconds (!) I did about everything I could find on this forum to speed up the OS, but no luck. Is there a tool available that helps me to find out which process/driver is causing the delay? Something like Bootvis for XP.

View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen my Vista Home Premium-SP1, is idle for awhile, the computer freezes. the screen is a grayish color and the mouse circle just keeps twirling. I have to manually re-boot. Everything is fine until I leave and come back...and it is frozen again. I cannot ctrl-alt-delete either. When I went to do a system restore, I saw that all my restore points were gone. How could this have happened? I thought maybe a windows update could be the source so I uninstalled the many updates (approx. 25). the next morning, I saw they had all returned even though I have it set not to download automatically.

I have no major problems, but my pc does seem to take a long time to start up and to load / run large files, and sometimes seems to go into a coma. I use CCleaner and Defraggler, and I uninstall/delete anything that I dont need. But my pc does seem to be struggling sometimes. I could add another 2Gb Ram, or I could upgrade to Windows 7 (which I read has much lower overheads??). Or perhaps I should buy a new PC? My question is, how do I decide what the best route is??
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've recently put together a new computer using these parts: I've updated to Vista Ultimate SP1, run multiple disk clean ups, defrags, use CCleaner, clean the registry, defrag the registry, disabled services and have made tweaks according to the guide provided on this website and have minimal startup programs running but my boot times average around 2 minutes. For a new computer with new hardware, this seems unreasonable as many users report boot times between 30-60 seconds. What could be wrong with my computer? On the vista loading screen with the green bar, it goes through about 22 cycles.

How can I copy the contents to my SD card which is read in the drive letter 'H'. The cmd. 'xcopy' will copy a whole directory & 'copy' will copy individual files. I read that System Restore doesn't affect personal data, but what I read mentioned only the Documents folder. It also mentioned something like the data had to be protected, so I'm wondering if only data in the Documents folder won't be affected!

I have a direct ethernet connection from my modem to my laptop, so no hardware firewall AFAIK, and as for anti-virus, I've been using Avast home free edition with no problems so far. I've never considered installing a 3rd party firewall - I just leave Windows' default firewall settings enabled. My questions is, do any of you believe that it's neccesary to have a firewall, and if so, which do you use? How would you rate it's performance? (I'm looking for free firewalls that perform well) I've read about Comodo and Zone alarm (I believe that's what it's called) but I've also read how they are essentially useless. I'm looking for one that won't be too much of a nuisance, ex: one that’s incompatible with other programs.

View 9 Replies View RelatedThe computer(hp m9150f) just won't start up. I've tried running CHKDSK and startup repair but I keep getting an error message saying that it was unable to fix it. Let me just say that the computer with the problem is not mine but my family's. I rarely use it, so I don't know what they might have done to it. They told me they had some important files inside the computer so they don't want me to do an hp system restore before they saved the files. So, what I've came up with is to do a vista upgrade first, so then they'd have access to their files. Then I would use the hp system restore to restore everything back to the normal. Can anybody here tell me if this would work and also if there's any other way to fix it?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI tried everything possible doing all the research on the net as possible and seeking HP tech support. Basically, my laptop won't start anymore. When I startup the computer, it just abruptly shuts down after 2-minutes. I tried reseating the RAM, the Hard drive, other things HP told me but all to no avail.
I have basically given up I think...I had one of these sent in when I had my warranty and HP supposedly fixed it. My whole life is on this computer. I was thinking of getting another comp if I can't fix this (I don't know what is wrong with it?) but what would happen to all the valuable materials and software on it? I have the hard drive still? Is there a device they sell I can hook up my hard drive as an external hard drive if I plugged it in with a device or something?
Is it normal when I turn on my computer that it first saids dell then the yellow greenish bar that got left to right then my screen go black with just the mouse pointer showing then to the windows logo then the welcom screen and finally my desktop? My main question is is it normal for the mouse pointer to be there for a few seconds before the circular windows logo appears? All together it take about a minute to a minute and a half to get to the desktop. Also sometimes when I do get to my desktop my sidebar gadgets are in the incorrect order. Is that a problem?

She is having a huge problem. Whenever she starts her computer, it starts up normally, and goes all the way to the log in screen. You can log in and everything seems fine. It takes about 30 seconds from the time that it shows the accounts to choose from until it automatically restarts. I let the battery completely drain and am recharging it. It is still auto restarting. Her AV was up to date and no problems there.
I have a new Acer Aspire computer running on Windows Vista. I've had it set up for a week now, running every day without any problems. Today, I switched on the computer and before Vista loaded, the computer shut down on its own. I tried again and this time got a screen asking if I want to run a start-up diagnostic. I chose that and the computer shut down again. I switched on again and this time Vista loaded and everything was ok. Apart from installing daily important Window Vista updates, I haven't changed anything on the system.
