I am unable to access Vista from an XP computer because apparently Vista is demanding a user name and password to share files. Password protected sharing is clearly turned OFF in the frigging network and sharing box. The computers are in the same workgroup, all sharing permissions have been turned on. SP1 had done nothing to rectify the disaster that is Vista, particularly networking with XP computers, which far outnumber Vista boxes because XP works and Vista doesn't.When you do something as simple as changing the name of the workgroup you have to reboot the computer. How is this any better than Windows 3.x?
Network of two computers, a desktop running vista home premium and a laptop running vista basic. I am the only user on each of the computers, my user account name is the same on both computers and I don't need a password to log on. File sharing is 'on', password protected sharing is 'off', and I have shared the 'documents' folder on both machines
When I view my network I see both computers "PAUL-PC" and PAUL-LAPTOP", when I select the one I'm not working on I see "Users", "Documents" and "Printers". When I select "Documents" I see "\PAUL-LAPTOPDocuments is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource....... etc."
I am an MCSE and would consider myself pretty savy overall, but this particular problem (which exists in my home network) has me frustrated. I have a PC running Vista Ultimate x64. Attached to that PC (via USB) is a HP Photosmart C3180. My wife's laptop is running XP Professional x86. I am trying to allow her to print to the printer attached to my Vista x64 PC.
I install the printer properly and confirm it working on my Vista x64 PC. I then share it out under the name HPC3180. I disable password protected sharing and under the security settings of the printer I give "Anonymous Logon" permission to access the printer. I know generally I would have to specify the x86 version of the driver under the "Additional Drivers" area in the properties of the printer; but in this case I do not know where to get the .INF files. I can download the drivers for the 32 bit version of XP from HP's site, but they aren't self extracting EXE files so I cannot get the INF file out of them to use. I even tried setting it up (on XP x86 laptop) as a "Local Printer" with a "Local Port" that points the printer. I then tried to use a variety of older and generic drivers. At worst it refused to print entirely. At best I got some sort of seemingly random output from the printer.
im using another admin account atm, and i haf this hidden admin account that is disactivated, i found out that this hidden admin does not haf any password to it. Do u guys think, this account should be just disactivated and not shown on the welcome screen, or both password protected and disactivated.
LAN network created by DSL-Router AVM FritzBox 7270. One LAN client - windows xp pro sp3 One WLAN client - vista business 32bits sp1. USB mass storage connected to router. Router shares the drive using samba server. Win xp has no problems while accessing this drive. Vista can access the drive only if it is not protected by password. What network setting is the vista pc missing ?
I have a "Lenovo SL500" thinkpad laptop, Running Vista Business 32bit. And a costum built Desktop PC running Vista Ultimate. Both password protected, but with the same password. I would like to transfer files vire the network. Now this wouldn't be a problem if the Reciving computer was not password protected. All I would do is open "Network" located in the start menu and then do the folowing "Network\". To find computers name: open start menu, right click on "computer" and press "properties" But because the reciving computer is password protected I can only see "Printers" I need security so I cannot remove passwords OR open my computer up for file sharing!
The only other options I have got are: Bluetooth: This Ok but is slow and you are needed on both computers for accepting, entering passes etc. (I would preferrer not to!) Server: We have a Server but this means uploading to the server(could take ages), Then Downloading the server(thats double the time). (Again I would preferrer not to!) Memory sticks: Basically a simaller problem to the server! (Once again I would preferrer not to!) So basically what I am asking is: Does anyone know an application/progam that deals with network file sharing (That will do what I am asking for) Or a hidden option in vista to allow this Or something?
4 computers using broadband connection to internet (easy) 4 computers using workgroup on router and switch to share network shares. The second part let me explain further. I prefer to have Essentially the entire "user files" folder shared to my other computers given they supply a network password....

When trying to connect wirelessly to the internet through my Netgear router (Comcast); Password protected I can only connect Locally, not internet. When it is not protected I can connect fine. I can connect fine using a wire. But I can't if it's password protected.
My 4 year old son turned on the computer when no one was looking and typed in various random entries into the password box and now we’re locked out! How can I reset this?
I just bought a new Lenovo 3000N200 laptop which came with Vista Home Premium preinstalled. I connected it wirelessly to my home network. The other PCs in this network are wired to the same ASUS wireless router and run WinXP.
All the machines are in the same workgroup. The network profile of my Vista laptop is "Private".
Everything works fine until I enable password protected sharing (file sharing ON, public folder sharing ON, password protected sharing ON) and reboot the machine. I mention the system is working as expected until reboot.
After each reboot, I find both the file sharing and public folder sharing set to OFF. Of course, the shared folders are not accessible via network. I can set the two options back to ON and everything works fine again, but this is unacceptably annoying!
If password protected sharing is set to OFF, file and folder sharing keep their ON state even after reboot. But I want the protected sharing - it fits my needs like a glove!
I have Vista x64 and I have read threads on this for weeks and can't fix it. I have file sharing/network discovery on, private network, password protection disabled, my shares set to everyone and everyone is on the same workgroup. My problem is that the x64 Vista computer will not see any of the XP (x86 or x64) computers and they can't see it from the Network Neighbourhood. However, if I type the IP address of the XP computers I can access them. On the XP computers if I type the IP address I get an error that it isn't accessable and I might not have permission. However, if I type \192.168.0.100share or any of the other share names I access it just fine. pinging works too by IP but not by name. If I boot into the x86 install of have of Vista I can access XP computers from Vista and the Vista from XP by name and everything without typing any user names. The only differince between the two aside from x64 and x86 is that x86 isn't patched past SP1 as I don't use it often. Lastly after installing that XP patch I can see the x86 XP computers by name from the network map feature on Vista, still can't access them by name though...
When online in IE, bottom toolbar says Internet protected mode OFF, when I double click on that, it opens internet properties, where there is already a ck mark in the box that says ENABLE PROTECTION MODE (REQUIRES A RESTART OF IE), but I restart IE, still unprotected message. OK, then try rebooting pc...darn, still unprotected. Ok, uncheck the box, click apply, then ok, restart pc, then go into internet properties and ck the box all over again...and on and on and on... So, how exactly is this SUPPOSED to work ?
I have Vista Home Premium on an Acer Laptop and all was fine until I decided to change my user password. I had or have (who knows now at this stage) an Administrator,User and HDD password installed on my machine. I went into my setup and changed my user password from set to clear but left my other passwords at set. when I exited and saved changes and rebooted I could not get back in with any and all passwords. To make things worse I cannot boot from cd either. It goes to press <F2> go to setup , Enter Current Password: ? then Invalad password I have tried the F10, F12, Del, F5, F8 keys and nothing seems to get past that login screen. Does anyone have any inexpensive suggestions on how I can get into this computer, or how I can get to a command prompt. Can I un-solder the internal Battery and then re attach it.
I am trying to format a cd that I bought (memorex) vista says it cannot be formatted because of its write protection. Unfortunately this is my only blank cd left so I can't use a new one. Is there a way of forcing a format? Or removing the write protection?

Running Vista64 Home Premium SP1. About every 4 or 5 times I boot the system, my data HDD D: presents as "write protected". A reboot corrects this. I have run diagnostics on the HDD and all appears OK.
The internet protected mode that shows on the bottom right side of a web page show's that it is off but the check marks are in place in the box's that you turn it on with and i have checked all the settings that i know to check to have it set to ON but it shows off. i have vista 64 bit on a HP desk top e9120y with IE8.
I have a brand new Dell Inspiron 545s which is equipped with a DVD +/- RW drive. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit. Today, I attempted to do my first back-up. I am using a brand new pack of Memorex DVD-RW disks which have never been used before.
Upon clicking on the backup utility, it instructed me to insert a blank DVD into the drive,which I did. The next instructions to appear indicated that the disk needed to be formatted (why?? since this was a brand-new disk??), but I let it go through the disk formatting process anyway. Upon reaching the end of the formatting process, I then received a message that the backup was proceeding.
The backup continued until it was approx. one-third completed (according to the shaded progress bar) and a total of two of my DVD's had been used up to that point. When prompted, I inserted a third disk and was, again, instructed to format it. However, this time I received a message that "Windows was unable to complete the formatting process because the disk was write protected". Having no idea why this would have occurred,I attempted to use another disk, but got the same message, and I finally exited the backup process without being able to complete it.
A few months ago i bought a new HP Pavilion Elite m9530.be desktop computer running Vista Home Premium x64. Almost since the beginning i haven't been able to write to my external hdd wich i used to use on my XP Pro x32 Laptop. On my laptop, I have no problem at all writing and reading to the HDD. It's weird, because sometimes I can write to the HDD on vista x64 and sometimes it says "this disk is write protected..." Please keep in mind i don't want and i can't format the disk because there's to many important files on it and I don't have the space to backup them. Is there a solution without re-formatting the disk. ps. When i bought it, it was formatted as FAT32, on my xp laptop, I changed it to NTFS.
My Dell does not have TPM. I am using bitlocker with a USB. I notice that the Recovery drive is neither protected nor eligible to be protected. I am wondering whether this is a weakness in my protection.
I have created a DVD using Windows Vista DVD Maker. I need to make about a dozen copies to mail out to family and friends. What would be the fastest way to make copies of this DVD? I have only a single DVD burner in my PC. I thought maybe create an image of this DVD then burn from that. It takes over 2 hours to create the DVD from the project file in DVD Maker.
I am not a native english speaker, so don't hate me for language problems. So, the problem I have here is that Windows Vista does not find any DRM protected music files I have. I am a new Napster Flatrate To-Go user. I can download alot of albums, but of course they are DRM protected, which is not a problem for me. But what is an problem for me is, that any downloaded files won't be found by the index. The music files of Napster are stored in my music folder (C:Users...Music), so the indexer should find them. Any other music I had (non DRM protected files) can be found easily via the Startmenu, the search dialog and Windows Media Player. The DRM protected files can't be found, except than in Windows Media Player. I already deleted the old index-cache and created a new one, but that didn't help either. Anyone else with this problem? Or a solution maybe? Or is this a general "bug" in Windows Vista?
I have a newly built rig which I dual boot Vista HP 32bit and Win7 Ultimate 64bit. Up until about 3 days ago, I have been able to use my external USB backup drive, transfer music to my phone’s memory card, and use my thumb drives. Now every time I try to transfer something new to one of them, I get this. “The disk is write-protected. Remove the write-protection or use another disk” I booted into Win7, and I was able to transfer files with no problems at all. As soon as I go back into Vista, can’t transfer or delete anything.
My Home network setup consists of the following....
In one room. 1 x laptop running XP Home, connected to the internet via a linksys wireless router, and modem.
In another room, I have this laptop, Acer Aspire, running Vista Business, and has wireless.
When I connected up my router (given to me by a family member, no software, just router, and mains adapter), and switched on my Acer laptop in the other room, I was able to connect to my Linksys Router, and gain access to the internet without any security whatsoever, no wep key or anything.
Now i know most people with problems have issues with not being able to connect to the internet because of a wep key lost or alike.
My issue is, i would like to add security to my network to stop other people in my building gaining access, or using my connection without my permission.
I can also connect my mobile phone to my home wireless network, and again, no wep key is asked for, which is quite worrying.
With Protected Mode enabled, our signed plugins no longer operate as they should due to limitations on where they can write files, etc. Is there any way to get around this programmatically, without the user having to disable Protected Mode manually? I must admit that I appreciate Microsoft's continued efforts regarding security, but the entire point of having signed plugins was so that the user could explicitly grant trust to the plugin. Unsigned plugins were not allowed by default in IE6. I'm not sure who thought that was inadequate.
I have a Vista64 Ultimate machine with 4 phsical hard drives. Seemingly ar random, the OS slaps write protection on an entire disk. I can go away for a coffee and come back BAM a key disk is write protected. I am logged onas administrator, the attributes fot the disk show that it is not write protected, but every time I try to write to it I get a "write prtotected" dialoge box. If I r reboot perhaps 3 times it clears and I am OK for a couple of days. Any cures without multiple re-boots?
I made the move to vista 64 but I experience a big headache with Protected Mode in IE7 (32). Here are the problems :Flash content not working when Protected Mode enabled Unable to download some contents. I receive an error when trying to download this but when outside protected mode it's all fine.
I can’t format and write to blank DVD+R’s with the Live File System using my VAIO internal DVD drive, Vista keeps saying the DVDs are write protected. The same problem is apparently keeping me from using Vista backup utility which also says the blank DVDs are write protected. I can still read old backup DVDs on the same DVD drive, but I can’t read the latest backup DVD I made. I can still format, write and read the blank DVD+R’s with the Mastered disc format but as far as I can tell the Vista backup utility needs the Live File System to operate. I tested the DVD drive with Sony's DriveCheck utility and it checked out good. Microsoft's Fix It utility indicated that there was a read and write probem but didn't elaborate about whether it was the drive or a configuration issue. Any ideas out there on why the Vista Live File System thinks the DVDs are write protected? Are there any inexpensive and automated backup programs that work with the Mastered disc format? It seems vaguely like I resolved this same problem a year or so ago but I can't seem to find the answer now. It also seem like the problem was a registry entry but I tried adding.
My Internet was acting very very slow. My computer was running fast as it always does but the internet was just very slow. I than noticed that in the bottom right corner of my screen the little globe had gone away. when I scrolled over it, it read local only? About one minute later the globe came back and it read local and internet. Whats wrong here? Here is my setup- I have my desktop computer connected to a wireless router (protected) (only used for Playstation) the router is connected to my vonage device, and the vonage device is connected to the modem. I am on vista, I have charter communications as my isp and this is not the first time this has happened!In fact if I look in my firewall I sometimes see connection issues like these- IP address has dissapeared from adapter Nvidia Nforce 10/100 mbps ethernet is no longer being protected (IP address .....) then a few seconds later I will read protecting your connection to a newly detected network Nvidia N force 10/100 mbps (ethernet.......) this ethernet is different that the one that dissapeared.Then I will see other firewall logs with all these connections and all?? Im so confuced. I am 99.9 % sure I have not been hacked by a neighbor.
