View 7 RepliesThe internet protected mode that shows on the bottom right side of a web page show's that it is off but the check marks are in place in the box's that you turn it on with and i have checked all the settings that i know to check to have it set to ON but it shows off. i have vista 64 bit on a HP desk top e9120y with IE8.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWith Protected Mode enabled, our signed plugins no longer operate as they should due to limitations on where they can write files, etc. Is there any way to get around this programmatically, without the user having to disable Protected Mode manually? I must admit that I appreciate Microsoft's continued efforts regarding security, but the entire point of having signed plugins was so that the user could explicitly grant trust to the plugin. Unsigned plugins were not allowed by default in IE6. I'm not sure who thought that was inadequate.

Is this what it is supposed to be? Or am I missing some built in protection here? Shouldn't it be "Protected Mode: On"?
I had this horrible problem of my KB (NUMlock) light staying on after my PC (Vista Ultimate 86x SP1) was completely shut down.
My KB was plugged into the PS2 port. After I took out the PS2 adapter and plugged the cable into a USB port the problem was fixed.
I tried to install this 3X now it stays hidden. The error just says must revert back or something. sorry to be such a pain in the A$$ see attachments for what I have installed as programs and updates.

When I put in a CD and install a program, my Mem usage sometimes goes to 100%, and stays at 100% even when it is finished installing. Everything runs insanely slow, and I usually end up holding the power button to restart (if I click on the start menu to restart, it takes 15-20s for the menu to come up). I say it happens sometimes, because it doesn't always happen. It is hit or miss. It sometimes also happens when doing other tasks (see below). However, when I open up task manager (and display all processes), I do not see any processes that are using an insane amount of memory. Everything looks normal. Also, today I was backing up ~3.5gb of files from my hard drive to my external drive. My memory usage went to 100% and stayed there, just like I mentioned before (had to power off).
Just to get all of the starter questions out of the way:
-This is a fresh install of Vista x64 with SP1 (SP1 is up-to-date)
-I do not have any viruses
-I do not have any spyware
-I have ran memtest for 16 hours just to make sure it wasn't my RAM
-I have no messed with the pagefile
-UAC is enabled
Also, when I run a program like prime95, my memory usage goes to 100%, but when I hit "stop", the mem usage goes back to 30-40% like it should. So things are working okay. I have had this system up since June. It is not a HUGE issue, because most of the time I am not installing anything, but when I do install something, it sometimes requires me to reboot.
sometimes and more than ever its doing it now, when I turn on my computer the screen just stays blank. Most times when I turn it off and on again it will recognize it then work fine, but as of lately it can take 10+ times. When it does this and you turn it off, it does flash the Analog and Digital box in the top left corner, meaning its recognizing it but it still wont work when computer is turned on again. Im thinking the problem is something to do with the Digital/Analog setting on my monitor, or something in the settings?
View 8 Replies View RelatedBack in the days I had time to be a Windows MVP, there were a lot of
questions I knew how to answer, but this wasn't one of them.
We have a Vista machine running Vista Ultimate. It is a Toshiba Tecra.
Within a few minutes of booting up, even in safe mode, the mouse pointer
drifts to one side, usually the right, and stays there. If you leave the
machine alone for a while, the issue goes away, but the moment a user starts
doing anything, the mouse becomes unusable in this way. I have tried exiting
all applications, and meticulously exiting every service whose function I
know is not a core Windows function, without avail. Windows Defender has not
found an issue.
When using Windows Mail, after I try to send an email, it remains in my outbox until I close down the Windows Mail. When I reopen Windows Mail, the message has moved to the sent folder, but is there a way I can send a mail without having to shut-down the program everytime? My status is showing as 'Working Online' and I have tried clicking the 'Send and Receive' but this doesnt resolve the problem.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a bit of a problem with moving files around...instead of trying to explain it Ill just list the things that is wrong:
ctrl+C, ctrl-V, ctrl+X does not work
trying to cut/copy/paste from right clicking does not work
drag/drop does not work
I CAN open the file and Save As.. to put the file where I want it. This is exclusively with files, I can do whatever I want with text without a problem. everything is available to use in the right-click menu, and when I cut a file it shades the file, but if I try to paste it somewhere else it does nothing, the file stays shaded where it originally was.
i just got this nice gaming computer and tried to play UT3 and LOTRO and both of them won't play, they both load up a launch screen and freeze there! UT3 installed but won't start, and lotro stays at the launch screen.

View 8 Replies View RelatedUsing my ISP (Roadrunner Carolinas) speed test site; I get around 200 to 400 kbps download speeds using IE in normal mode. If I boot to Safe Mode, I get around 3500 to 4500 kbps, which is what it should be (this is what I used to get in normal mode before I re-installed Vista). Running the same speed test with Firefox, I get around 1500 to 2000 kbps in normal mode, but if I try to download a file it ransfers at only the 200 to 400 kbsp rate (if I'm lucky). Here's more detail about the system and what I've done so far:
Installed all updates including SP2.
Using Windows Firewall, no anti-virus.
Updated network drivers directly from NVidia (Chipset is nForce750i)
Updated graphics card drivers directly from NVidia
Disabled all LAN protocols except for Client for Microsoft Networks and IPv4
Connected via ethernet cable directly to cable modem, no router.
I've deliberately refrained from loading anything but the basics until I can get this sorted out..........
When online in IE, bottom toolbar says Internet protected mode OFF, when I double click on that, it opens internet properties, where there is already a ck mark in the box that says ENABLE PROTECTION MODE (REQUIRES A RESTART OF IE), but I restart IE, still unprotected message. OK, then try rebooting pc...darn, still unprotected. Ok, uncheck the box, click apply, then ok, restart pc, then go into internet properties and ck the box all over again...and on and on and on... So, how exactly is this SUPPOSED to work ?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a brand new Dell Inspiron 545s which is equipped with a DVD +/- RW drive. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit. Today, I attempted to do my first back-up. I am using a brand new pack of Memorex DVD-RW disks which have never been used before.
Upon clicking on the backup utility, it instructed me to insert a blank DVD into the drive, which I did. The next instructions to appear indicated that the disk needed to be formatted (why?? since this was a brand-new disk??), but I let it go through the disk formatting process anyway. Upon reaching the end of the formatting process, I then received a message that the backup was proceeding.
The backup continued until it was approx. one-third completed (according to the shaded progress bar) and a total of two of my DVD's had been used up to that point. When prompted, I inserted a third disk and was, again, instructed to format it. However, this time I received a message that "Windows was unable to complete the formatting process because the disk was write protected". Having no idea why this would have occurred,I attempted to use another disk, but got the same message, and I finally exited the backup process without being able to complete it.

View 5 Replies View RelatedA few months ago i bought a new HP Pavilion Elite m9530.be desktop computer running Vista Home Premium x64. Almost since the beginning i haven't been able to write to my external hdd wich i used to use on my XP Pro x32 Laptop. On my laptop, I have no problem at all writing and reading to the HDD. It's weird, because sometimes I can write to the HDD on vista x64 and sometimes it says "this disk is write protected..." Please keep in mind i don't want and i can't format the disk because there's to many important files on it and I don't have the space to backup them. Is there a solution without re-formatting the disk. ps. When i bought it, it was formatted as FAT32, on my xp laptop, I changed it to NTFS.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am unable to access Vista from an XP computer because apparently Vista is demanding a user name and password to share files. Password protected sharing is clearly turned OFF in the frigging network and sharing box. The computers are in the same workgroup, all sharing permissions have been turned on. SP1 had done nothing to rectify the disaster that is Vista, particularly networking with XP computers, which far outnumber Vista boxes because XP works and Vista doesn't.When you do something as simple as changing the name of the workgroup you have to reboot the computer. How is this any better than Windows 3.x?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am not a native english speaker, so don't hate me for language problems. So, the problem I have here is that Windows Vista does not find any DRM protected music files I have. I am a new Napster Flatrate To-Go user. I can download alot of albums, but of course they are DRM protected, which is not a problem for me. But what is an problem for me is, that any downloaded files won't be found by the index. The music files of Napster are stored in my music folder (C:Users...Music), so the indexer should find them. Any other music I had (non DRM protected files) can be found easily via the Startmenu, the search dialog and Windows Media Player. The DRM protected files can't be found, except than in Windows Media Player. I already deleted the old index-cache and created a new one, but that didn't help either. Anyone else with this problem? Or a solution maybe? Or is this a general "bug" in Windows Vista?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a "Lenovo SL500" thinkpad laptop, Running Vista Business 32bit. And a costum built Desktop PC running Vista Ultimate. Both password protected, but with the same password. I would like to transfer files vire the network. Now this wouldn't be a problem if the Reciving computer was not password protected. All I would do is open "Network" located in the start menu and then do the folowing "Network\". To find computers name: open start menu, right click on "computer" and press "properties" But because the reciving computer is password protected I can only see "Printers" I need security so I cannot remove passwords OR open my computer up for file sharing!
The only other options I have got are: Bluetooth: This Ok but is slow and you are needed on both computers for accepting, entering passes etc. (I would preferrer not to!) Server: We have a Server but this means uploading to the server(could take ages), Then Downloading the server(thats double the time). (Again I would preferrer not to!) Memory sticks: Basically a simaller problem to the server! (Once again I would preferrer not to!) So basically what I am asking is: Does anyone know an application/progam that deals with network file sharing (That will do what I am asking for) Or a hidden option in vista to allow this Or something?
I have a newly built rig which I dual boot Vista HP 32bit and Win7 Ultimate 64bit. Up until about 3 days ago, I have been able to use my external USB backup drive, transfer music to my phone’s memory card, and use my thumb drives. Now every time I try to transfer something new to one of them, I get this. “The disk is write-protected. Remove the write-protection or use another disk” I booted into Win7, and I was able to transfer files with no problems at all. As soon as I go back into Vista, can’t transfer or delete anything.

In one room. 1 x laptop running XP Home, connected to the internet via
a linksys wireless router, and modem.
In another room, I have this laptop, Acer Aspire, running Vista

When I connected up my router (given to me by a family member, no
software, just router, and mains adapter), and switched on my Acer
laptop in the other room, I was able to connect to my Linksys Router,
and gain access to the internet without any security whatsoever, no wep
key or anything.
Now i know most people with problems have issues with not being able to
connect to the internet because of a wep key lost or alike.
My issue is, i would like to add security to my network to stop other
people in my building gaining access, or using my connection without my
permission.
I can also connect my mobile phone to my home wireless network, and
again, no wep key is asked for, which is quite worrying.
