I tried to install this 3X now it stays hidden. The error just says must revert back or something. sorry to be such a pain in the A$$ see attachments for what I have installed as programs and updates.

I have just purchased a new high capacity hard drive that I wish to install in my PC. I think this question has been asked before but all seem to want to copy their existing drive onto the new drive. I just want to start brand new fresh and clean. Dont want to transfer anything. I think I may have hidden virii or trojans in my old drive that I just want to be shed of.
how do I ensure that when I install the new drive it will be designated as c: I also have a d: drive that I use for music and data storage. Should I unplug the d drive while installing the new drive? I intend to install Vista Ultimate on the new drive. Also, microsoft authenticate this new installation of Vista given that it is on a brand new drive? I assume microsoft does some hardware checking to ensure any reinstallation is on the same and not a completely different computer.
I had this horrible problem of my KB (NUMlock) light staying on after my PC (Vista Ultimate 86x SP1) was completely shut down.
My KB was plugged into the PS2 port. After I took out the PS2 adapter and plugged the cable into a USB port the problem was fixed.

View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen I put in a CD and install a program, my Mem usage sometimes goes to 100%, and stays at 100% even when it is finished installing. Everything runs insanely slow, and I usually end up holding the power button to restart (if I click on the start menu to restart, it takes 15-20s for the menu to come up). I say it happens sometimes, because it doesn't always happen. It is hit or miss. It sometimes also happens when doing other tasks (see below). However, when I open up task manager (and display all processes), I do not see any processes that are using an insane amount of memory. Everything looks normal. Also, today I was backing up ~3.5gb of files from my hard drive to my external drive. My memory usage went to 100% and stayed there, just like I mentioned before (had to power off).
Just to get all of the starter questions out of the way:
-This is a fresh install of Vista x64 with SP1 (SP1 is up-to-date)
-I do not have any viruses
-I do not have any spyware
-I have ran memtest for 16 hours just to make sure it wasn't my RAM
-I have no messed with the pagefile
-UAC is enabled
Also, when I run a program like prime95, my memory usage goes to 100%, but when I hit "stop", the mem usage goes back to 30-40% like it should. So things are working okay. I have had this system up since June. It is not a HUGE issue, because most of the time I am not installing anything, but when I do install something, it sometimes requires me to reboot.
sometimes and more than ever its doing it now, when I turn on my computer the screen just stays blank. Most times when I turn it off and on again it will recognize it then work fine, but as of lately it can take 10+ times. When it does this and you turn it off, it does flash the Analog and Digital box in the top left corner, meaning its recognizing it but it still wont work when computer is turned on again. Im thinking the problem is something to do with the Digital/Analog setting on my monitor, or something in the settings?

We have a Vista machine running Vista Ultimate. It is a Toshiba Tecra.
Within a few minutes of booting up, even in safe mode, the mouse pointer
drifts to one side, usually the right, and stays there. If you leave the
machine alone for a while, the issue goes away, but the moment a user starts
doing anything, the mouse becomes unusable in this way. I have tried exiting
all applications, and meticulously exiting every service whose function I
know is not a core Windows function, without avail. Windows Defender has not
found an issue.
When using Windows Mail, after I try to send an email, it remains in my outbox until I close down the Windows Mail. When I reopen Windows Mail, the message has moved to the sent folder, but is there a way I can send a mail without having to shut-down the program everytime? My status is showing as 'Working Online' and I have tried clicking the 'Send and Receive' but this doesnt resolve the problem.

ctrl+C, ctrl-V, ctrl+X does not work
trying to cut/copy/paste from right clicking does not work
drag/drop does not work
I CAN open the file and Save As.. to put the file where I want it. This is exclusively with files, I can do whatever I want with text without a problem. everything is available to use in the right-click menu, and when I cut a file it shades the file, but if I try to paste it somewhere else it does nothing, the file stays shaded where it originally was.
i just got this nice gaming computer and tried to play UT3 and LOTRO and both of them won't play, they both load up a launch screen and freeze there! UT3 installed but won't start, and lotro stays at the launch screen.

View 8 Replies View RelatedBefore I remove a USB thumb drive, I click the green check from notification area; I click the message that appears next to the green check, Safely remove USB Mass Storage Device - drives (F:, G; then a dialog box appears that states, This device can now be safely removed from computer.
The light on the thumb drive, however, stays lighted. I previously followed a procedure where the light would go off on the thumb drive when I did a Safely Remove.
Should the light on the thumb drive go off before it can be safely removed? If so, how do I get the thumdrive light to go off?

this looks like the closest i've found to a forum w/ my prob.
essentially i backed up my HD on an external (western digital) using "second backup" as the backup software.
i noticed after backing up that all my folder icons (favorites, contacts, music, pictures, etc...) reverted to the generic yellow folder.
i was able to change one or two (and only those in the shortcuts in "favorite links" heading of a windows explorer window) by right click -> properties -> change icon but all the folders (in their actual location eg. c:users"username") remain the ugly yellow folder.
changing them one by one seems inefficient and if annoying if it were to occur again.
i've done the right-click on destop -> personalize -> change desktop icon -> restore default, no result (tho i didnt really expect one since the desktop icons arent really the issue)
i've rebuilt the icon cache, no luck.
i've re-written the desktop.ini for a couple of them, no result (tho i didnt really expect one)
system restore isn't an option, i dont have an old enough restore point (hense the need for backing up).
i'm wondering of a systemic way to essentially restore the default icons for all these folders (music, video, downloads, etc...) and their respective shortcuts.
I can't appear the hidden folders. When i choose " appear hidden folders" and clicking Ok, hidden folders doesn't appear. What's the matter?

I insert a blank cd and it auto loads, then it asks to format before continueing, i click yes, it formats then right at the end it says unable to finish formatting and opens the cd. I then try to burn onto it and the cd stays blank.

Here is an example: I navigate to eMule folder, which should contain Incoming folder, but does not. I start up eMule, go to Tools and select Go To Incoming Folder and the folder opens up normally showing the files I have downloaded. This problem also exists with a game I own. I'm not able to view the map files I have created with the game. Yet when I start the editor and choose to open a previous map file, it is nicely there in the folder it is supposed to be in.
View 5 Replies View RelatedLast night I was working on an Access database. I closed the file and its folder and then decided to go back in to check something. I opened the folder and THE FILE WASN'T THERE!! Panic and chaos ensued for a while. I was able to find the file by going back into access and opening it from it's most recently used file list. I saved a backup copy etc.....
However, the original file is still not showing up in the folder. I have changed the folder settings to show hidden files, done a search, everything I can think of, but the file won't show up. Thinking that the original is somewhere else and perhaps I have just lost it, I moved a backup copy into the original folder and tried to change it's name to that of the original file. Windows gives me the warning that a file with that name already exists! If it exists, how come I can't see it? The folder says there are 9 items but there are actually 10 if you include this ghost file.

There's about 5GB difference between the listed files and folders and the space used in drive properties. Does Vista REALLY hide things like the hibernation file? View 5 Replies View RelatedI tried to move my personal folders to another drive & got things screwed up. By following some of the advice here I was able to get things back to the default. I only have one problem. Under C:UsersCarrie I can't see the Documents folder. I can see all the other personal folders, but not the Documents folder. At the top of the tree, under my name, Carrie, I can see the Documents folder. If I unhide files & System files I can see the Documents folder under C:UsersCarrie.
I have compared the Documents folder properties with the other personal folder properties to see if I could see a difference. The only difference is on the Document folder the hidden attribute has a check by it but it is grayed out. You can't change it. I thing this might be the problem, but I don't know how to fix it.

A remember pressing a read-only button (I think). My brother said I have to go to each folder one by one and change them to not be hidden, but I don't know which ones are supposed to be showing and which ones aren't. We are using a monitor cal program that on one machine will write the color profile to the system32/spool/drivers/color directory without a problem. The program on the other machine will not. I can browse from the cal programs and on one machine I can see the spool directory and the other I can't. Though I can see most of the other folders in system32.
The other clue is I can see the spool directory with WINDOWS explorer on both machines. But with INTERNET explorer 7 I can only see the spool directory on the good machine. I can also see the spool directory with programs like Thunderbird on one machine, but not the other. But programs like notepad are ok on both.
The spool folder permissions appear to be the same on both and I have tried unhiding folders and even superhidden folders with no luck. I have also tried running the program as admin and compatibility modes. I have spent two days trying to fix this and if anyone has an idea how to fix this it would be great.

Due to a very long and unsuccessful attempt to get Office Enterprise to work properly on a new ACER (VISTA Home Premium) computer that came c/w a pre-installed trial version of Office 2007 as per Office technical support I need to do a clean install of VISTA. My problem is that the only option I have is to re-install the ACER factory load c/w the trial version and all of the other useless stuff. I am contemplating buying either a full or oem version of VISTA Home Premium, Format C, get rid of the hidden partition and start from scratch. What is the difference between oem and full other than the price.. Advice will be appreciated, this is my fourth computer but I have never needed to do anything this drastic before.
