Getting Back To The Hidden Restore Partition

Jun 28, 2008

Is there a disk or a utility that can get me back to put vista back on my machine? What I did was format the C: Drive and installed WinXP as I had probs getting on with Vista but I am finding I am having more problems with WinXP than I did with Vista. Its cracking me up as ZooStorm dont give out disks for windows vista and they dont provide a way of creatig a backup disk, Just the partition.

Disk Management & EISA Partition: Delete And Remove To Unlock EISA Hidden Recovery Or Diagnostic Partition In Vista

Jan 14, 2009

I think I messed up my hard drive while trying to erase the EISA partition on it. It's a Gateway P7811-FX laptop with a single 200 GB hard drive. Before, I only had 1 main partition: the C: Drive (176.31 GB), along with the hidden 10 GB EISA partition. After making recovery disks, I followed this tutorial: Delete and Remove to Unlock EISA Hidden Recovery or Diagnostic Partition in Vista » My Digital Life

Following that, I went in Disk Management. The hidden partition showed up, but I couldn't extend the C drive to use the unallocated 10 GB, so I converted it to a simple 10 GB volume. Then I used Acronis Disk Director Suite and merged the two partitions. And now, I can't do anything in Disk Management. There's only one partition now (186.31 GB), but when I right click on it, there's no options to create, shrink, delete, or extend the partition. They were there before, but the only option that shows up is Help.

Under Status, it says Healthy (Active, EISA Configuration). I think I merged the partitions the wrong way, so now there's no "System, Boot, Page File..." partition. Everything is on the EISA partition. When I try to run Acronis, the program doesn't load up. I've tried using Diskpart but I can't create any new partitions either.

OEM Vs Full Version: Hidden Partition

Mar 26, 2008

Due to a very long and unsuccessful attempt to get Office Enterprise to work properly on a new ACER (VISTA Home Premium) computer that came c/w a pre-installed trial version of Office 2007 as per Office technical support I need to do a clean install of VISTA. My problem is that the only option I have is to re-install the ACER factory load c/w the trial version and all of the other useless stuff. I am contemplating buying either a full or oem version of VISTA Home Premium, Format C, get rid of the hidden partition and start from scratch. What is the difference between oem and full other than the price.. Advice will be appreciated, this is my fourth computer but I have never needed to do anything this drastic before.

Hd 3 Partitions And Can Remove Hidden Partition

Mar 23, 2008

Recently replaced an ACER factory load with a clean install of VISTA Home Preimum. My HD has 3 partitions C (228gb), D (227gb), and hidden (9gb). Would like to get rid of the hidden (ACER factory load ). My HD is 500 GB and my total use is 51 GB on C. Would it make sense to create 3 partitions C (small) for Vista and applications, D (small) for data and E (whats left) for whatever. Is it possible / pratical to move the entire User folder to D or would this actually cause more future trouble than it is worth. Can any of this be done with Disk Management (when I right click on the hidden I get no options) or is a third party solution required ? Or should I just leave well enough alone.

Missing Folder (not Hidden) When Trying To Back Up Hard Drives

Mar 8, 2010

I'm using Vista Home Premium x64. I was attempting to back up some external drives to each other. I had previously used Robocopy on Windows XP with much success, so I thought I would do the same. I initially just manually copied and pasted an external drive designated "G:" into a folder within another external drive designated "I:" (so for example I:Backup1). The files were present and looked all good after this.

Today, I ran Robocopy to try to mirror those two, however as soon as I finished, the "Backup1" folder disappeared from "I:". The files however are present, as I can tell from the space used on "I:" and on top of that, when I try to make a new folder with the same name ("Backup1"), it won't let me, saying that a folder by that name is already present. Other folders (that do not have any data yet) are still present within "I:" The Robocopy script is basically Robocopy "G:" "I:Backup1" /MIR /XA:SH /XD AppData /XJD /R:2 /W:2 /V /ETA /Z /LOG:Backuplog.txt

Use System Restore To Restore Back To Certain Restore Points?

May 26, 2008

Why can't I use system restore to restore back to certain restore points? I was only successful twice with it. When my laptap was new and when I used it after re-formatting my hard drive. On all occassions after those two instances I can never restore back to any restore point. It always says that "unspecified error" line. If Microsoft doesn't know what happend, how could I. Why did they bother putting system restore if it doesn't work all the time anyway. It gives you a false sense of security.

Backup And Restore: Hidden Application Data Folders

Jan 27, 2010

I have two user accounts on my computer. My administrator account that I very rarely ever use, and my normal, general user account I named "Bob1". I use Vista Windows Mail as my email application. I just searched and found the "hidden" folder where my Windows Mail stuff is (C:UsersBob1AppDataLocalMicrosoftWindows Mail Local Folders & Microsoft Communities & Compact & Backup) I save everything to my Bob1 user account to the appropriate folder (Documents in documents folder, pictures into pictures folder, etc.) I never vary from this habit.

I have been backing up using Vista32 backup. It gives me the option to backup "Pictures, Music, Videos, E-mail, Document, TV-shows, Compressed files, Additional files". I check all of these options so all are backed up. It comes on automatically every day to backup anything new or changed.

I checked the restore part of vista32 backup & restore found in control panel. I looked up Bob1 and all my folders are there. It appeared the application data folders were there (difficult to find because the application data folders are hidden). I specifically checked the Windows Mail folders in the hidden application data folders and they were there. It appeasers everything is backed up.........

Restore Previous Versions Menu Item Missing/hidden?

May 12, 2008

In Windows Vista Inside Out chapter 7 section "Restoring Files and Folders with Previous Versions" it states, "To see what previous versions are available for a file or folder, right-click the item in Windows Explorer and choose Restore Previous Versions." When I right-click a file or folder (with frequent changes over time) in Windows Explorer, I can't find anything labelled "Restore Previous Versions".

I have "Show hidden files and folders" checked and "Hide protected operating system files" unchecked in Folder Options, and I opened Windows Explorer using "Run as Administrator". How do I get to see the "Restore Previous Versions" menu item?

How do I do this?

Cant Extend Main Partition Back

Aug 11, 2009

so here is my problem. I partitioned my c drive to make room for a test windows 7 install. well apparently my DVD burner hates me, so i never got the chance to try it out. The partition is 30GB. Now it says free space. but i cant extend my main partition back to it was. It says it's an extended partition. Do i have to make it primary to extend the c drive? And if so, how would i go about that? It also asked me, when not a drive, if i wanted to delete the partition... Would that make it primary? It says the partition will become inaccesible if you delete it...

"hidden" 7 GB Partition Prevent From Doing Recovery?

Jun 12, 2009

On a Lenovo T61 running Vista there is a "hidden" 7 GB partition that is for a recovery operation. The balance of the Hard Disk is C. There is no D. The CD/DVD Reader/Burner is E. Am I able to use the Vista builtin facilities to shrink C to 20GB, and then create and format a second partition (D) on the now free/unallocated area? If so, will this prevent me from doing a recovery as the PC was originally set up for? Are there any hidden traps? Is there a GOOD site/page that describes the operation?

Also if a file backup completes successfully and is backed up on a network drive will I be able to restore from a new install of window vista premium on the same laptop that was backed up to the network drive? Is there a better way using vista premium? I have Norton Ghost 12.0 on my desktop but not on the laptop with vista premium. Don't what to have to buy a license for laptop if there is another way to make sure in case of a failure of the operating system that I could recover by an full backup or image ? i had to reinstall Vista and to avoid this in the future i am considering an extern harddrive via the USB port to make a full back-up of everything on the computer. How to restore it if Vista is no longer available? When you are no longer in control of the system. Does one alter the bios so the USB port will be looked at first? And if so can one restore every byte from the extern hard drive to the original drives. Furthermore Windows claims that the restore can be put on other computers. I find this hard to believe when the other computer has not the same hardware setup

Compression And Back Up Restore

Feb 21, 2009

After enduring the black screen and mouse pointer of death all morning with 4 system restores I have decided to go ahead with a back up/restore program (Acronis) outside of what came with the laptop (backup the backup). Presently I have several gigs of stuff I don't use but don't want to delete so would like to compress on one of my external drives. My goal is to, after packing my old stuff on my 125g Maxtor I'd like to create one image of the entire laptop drive, programs, files etc, then back up the My Documents folder and pics as they are changed on my 1T WD Book.

Herein lies the rub, I have downloaded 7Zip and have begun compressing some files. It was a crap shoot due to my having zero knowledge of what each of the settings mean and how to set them to get the most out of the 2 hrs it takes to do the compression. Dictionary size? Solid block size? Number of CPU threads? Word size? I went ahead with what they recommended (normal) but was not seeming to save any space so I stopped and tried Ultra. I understand this is a powerful piece of software but where can I find information on all this. I have searched this forum and the 7Zip forum (which is a post-apocalyptic waste land of unanswered posts), Google presented nothing. (When I searched for 'what is "solid block size"' I found "solid block size dictates the size of your solid block" LOL)......

How Do I Create A Manufactures Restore Partition? On A New HDD?

May 24, 2010

I have a Gateway Desktop 1tb hdd and would like to create restore partition the way Gateway would have created it when it left the shop. I believe the create a 5-10 Gg partition with a picture of what the machine look like (vanilla).

Can any one tell me how to do this myself or point me to instructions? My think it that it might be as simple as using say, Acropolis to create a full backup to this 10gg partition.

However, I'm thinking when Gateway does this in its shop it uses something else that is not reliant on a specific manufacturers software when I recovery/restore if required. What might Gate use to create a Restore Partition?

Is It Possible To Restore Mail Back To Client?

Mar 28, 2009

I've had no luck at all using Windows Mail. I've been everywhere looking for soultions. All the solutions were vialbe for setting up an account with AOL. As far as that goes, everything is fine except receiving sent mail. I get no error messages when sending. I can send to AOL and it arrives. When I send to gmail, it never arrives and yet there is no error message. After weeks of trying that is the end result. The other problem is that when Windows Mail takes my AOL mail it does not leave a copy at AOL. As a result, all AOL mail is currently stored in Windows Mail, which is the only way I can access it. Thus my question: Is it possible to some how return my AOL mail back to AOL from Windows Mail?

Disk Management: Remove The Recovery Partition And Then Extend The C: Partition

Oct 5, 2009

I recently acquired a Dell Studio XPS 435 desktop with Vista Ultimate as the OS. My plan is to upgrade to Windows 7 in the next couple of months or so. Therefore I won't need the Vista recovery partition on the hard drive. I am trying to eliminate it and add to the C: drive partition. Looking at my drive 0 in disk management I have from Right to left a C: partition 683Gb NTFS with the usual Healthy (System, Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition). Directly to the left is the Recovery or D: drive which is 15Gb NTFS marked Healthy (Primary Partition) and finally to the left is the last partition of 71Mb marked Healthy (EISA Configuration). No idea what that is. Right clicking in the Recovery partition gives several options including: format, shrink volume, extend volume, delete volume, mark volume as active, change drive letter and paths, as well as help.

My question is how to remove the recovery partition and then extend the C: partition. My first thought is to format the recovery partition, delete the volume and then right click the C: drive partition and extend it but I really need some advice so I don't screw up the whole disk. For instance I have no idea what if anything hapens to the drive letters.I think maybe what I am calling partitions are really volumes so you can see I am over my head here.
