i got this laptop and i bought it brand new and have not had a problem with it at all. but i do want to up it ro 8 GB or ram because i do alot of intensive programs at once. but the one thing i wish i could do is make my processor faster. is there some way i can do this with out having to take it apart?
View 4 RepliesWhy can't I use system restore to restore back to certain restore points? I was only successful twice with it. When my laptap was new and when I used it after re-formatting my hard drive. On all occassions after those two instances I can never restore back to any restore point. It always says that "unspecified error" line. If Microsoft doesn't know what happend, how could I. Why did they bother putting system restore if it doesn't work all the time anyway. It gives you a false sense of security.

How to restore it if Vista is no longer available? When you are no longer in control of the system. Does one alter the bios so the USB port will be looked at first? And if so can one restore every byte from the extern hard drive to the original drives. Furthermore Windows claims that the restore can be put on other computers. I find this hard to believe when the other computer has not the same hardware setup

I wanted to restore to the point before he did this but it was a few months ago. When i try to do a system restore to that date it wont let me go back that far. I am not sure how to do this? Is there a way to restore windows to the orignal? I bought the computer with windows vista on it so i do not have a backup disk for windows it jsut came with it, but is there a way i can still re-install it.

It shows a restore point being created on 5/26. System Restore shows the last Restore Point being created on 5/25 about 1 hour after downloading.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a recent problem installing Windows updates on Vista Ultimate as the update process stays on 'creating restore point' forever. I've let it run as long as 7 hours in this state, with no change. It looks like the system is unable to make a restore point sucessfully. I know it has worked in the past, as I'm fairly up-to-date on Windows updates. Reading some other threads, I've tried using Disk Clean-up to remove all by the most recent restore points, and then try to disable/re-enable system restore - this part without success. When I check the system properties for System Restore, the System Restore button is greyed out. I've attached a screenshot of the screen for reference. I've checked the group policies to verify the System Restore is not disabled there.

Also if a file backup completes successfully and is backed up on a network drive will I be able to restore from a new install of window vista premium on the same laptop that was backed up to the network drive? Is there a better way using vista premium? I have Norton Ghost 12.0 on my desktop but not on the laptop with vista premium. Don't what to have to buy a license for laptop if there is another way to make sure in case of a failure of the operating system that I could recover by an full backup or image ? I do some beta testing and do not want to spend hours re-loading software.
I went to accessories/system tools/system restore and clicked it. I then got a small dialogue window asking if I wanted to continue and I clicked continue. That little window disappeared but then nothing hasppened. I was expecting to see a list of possible restore points but nothing showed on my screen. I clicked system restore again and got a message that system restore was already running and would now exit.

View 7 Replies View RelatedAfter enduring the black screen and mouse pointer of death all morning with 4 system restores I have decided to go ahead with a back up/restore program (Acronis) outside of what came with the laptop (backup the backup). Presently I have several gigs of stuff I don't use but don't want to delete so would like to compress on one of my external drives. My goal is to, after packing my old stuff on my 125g Maxtor I'd like to create one image of the entire laptop drive, programs, files etc, then back up the My Documents folder and pics as they are changed on my 1T WD Book.
Herein lies the rub, I have downloaded 7Zip and have begun compressing some files. It was a crap shoot due to my having zero knowledge of what each of the settings mean and how to set them to get the most out of the 2 hrs it takes to do the compression. Dictionary size? Solid block size? Number of CPU threads? Word size? I went ahead with what they recommended (normal) but was not seeming to save any space so I stopped and tried Ultra. I understand this is a powerful piece of software but where can I find information on all this. I have searched this forum and the 7Zip forum (which is a post-apocalyptic waste land of unanswered posts), Google presented nothing. (When I searched for 'what is "solid block size"' I found "solid block size dictates the size of your solid block" LOL)......
Is there a disk or a utility that can get me back to put vista back on my machine? What I did was format the C: Drive and installed WinXP as I had probs getting on with Vista but I am finding I am having more problems with WinXP than I did with Vista. Its cracking me up as ZooStorm dont give out disks for windows vista and they dont provide a way of creatig a backup disk, Just the partition.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've had no luck at all using Windows Mail. I've been everywhere looking for soultions. All the solutions were vialbe for setting up an account with AOL. As far as that goes, everything is fine except receiving sent mail. I get no error messages when sending. I can send to AOL and it arrives. When I send to gmail, it never arrives and yet there is no error message. After weeks of trying that is the end result. The other problem is that when Windows Mail takes my AOL mail it does not leave a copy at AOL. As a result, all AOL mail is currently stored in Windows Mail, which is the only way I can access it. Thus my question: Is it possible to some how return my AOL mail back to AOL from Windows Mail?

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." I cannot make or restore my computer. If I go into system protection I get this error: C:WindowsSystem32SYSDM.CPL is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.

Holy ****. Games, Personalization, System Restore, System Backup (Error code 1068), User Accounts, and Windows Update. They show up, and then they dissapear right away. Any help please? Virusscan'd with AVG, tested hardware, it's clean, I dont know whats wrong.
My wife was on the internet and suddenly System Pro popped up and started scanning warning my wife of a virus attack on her computer and wanted her to buy the AV Pgm for $49.95. She just clicked all the exits and got off of the internet and now she is locked out of her computer. We can't get system restore to work, Can't get safe mode to work, She has AVG 8 installed but cannot start it. Tried SFC /scannow but was denied access. Tried putting the Windows XP disk in to do a repair and was unable to get it to start. I think the only thing to do is reformat the HD and start over but her PC ignores the A drive and the dvd drives. I cannot get into it in order to re format it.

I keep getting system error when I try to reduce the room used on my C drive as I only have 28gb of 145gb left. I have tried typing in:vssadmin list shadowstorage For the above command to run you must use elevated privileges:
1.. Click on the Start menu then click All Programs / Accessories
2.. Right Click on the Command Prompt option and from the drop down menu click on the Run as Administrator option
3.. At the command prompt type vssadmin list shadowstorage and Press Enter

View 7 Replies View RelatedThe mystery, at least to me, my PC was running almost 2 years. and it was not until about 3 weeks ago that System Restore began to save Restore Points the size of Approx 3 to 4GB daily. Prior to that the Restore Points were well under 1GB. it would be 3 to 6 days before I noticed the loss of 1GB. So why suddenly would the Restore File grew 1 one day from well under 1GB to between 3 to 4GB? That now is the issue I would like to know the answer to. and perhaps that file being saved with each Restore Point is not needed. I mean it wasn't needed for almost 2 years. so I can't think over night it became important but it sure is eating up HDD space.

My system has 3 gigs of RAM and is an AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-60 2.00 GHz. I was originally using Windows Vista 32-bit Home Premium System Pack 1 (what it came with the system) and I had upgraded to Vista 64-bit. I am not sure if my problem was caused by my upgrade of Vista or my system being too warm (as I have been using it a lot and it has been getting hot and making loud noises); but after I upgraded to the 64-bit Windows Vista Home Premium System Pack 2, I was then going to the upgrade directly from the Windows to the Vista Ultimate which I had purchased earlier (and not got around to update any of it with my schedule)....and after I did this, it asked for me to restart my computer and as soon as I did....poof! It shut off and won't turn back on.

I could also 'manually' create a 'System Checkpoint.' What I would like to know is - doees Vista (Home Premium) create such an 'automatic' System Checkpoint if I have notebook turned on, but don't use if for about 30 minutes?

The irritating pop-ups everytime I want to do something (like access user controls, delete a folder, etc.) that want confirmation. Unfortunately I purchased this comptuer with Vista Home installed. Is there a way to just install XP Home back on this thing? I have tried with the XP Home CD and it appears that it will not allow the system to be rolled back.

The concensus of opinion suggested a new HDD was the answer.
Have done that and created the restore disks from the original HDD.
Started the restore and went ok until nearly at the end of formatting the new HDD when I got the message
"error if it happens again contact HP" it did not happen again and appeared to restore files ok, did a verify and no errors.
Trying to boot from the HDD it now fails. Errors report registry incorrect plus others.
Cannot load my Vista version as is 64bit.
I cannot obviously send the errors to MS as the thing will not boot.
Any solutions obvious apart from getting a disk containing Vista 32 bit system
Laptop is an HP Presario running Vista HOme Premium 32.
Is there any utility built into Vista or XP to allow one to create a complete system restore DVD?
