Holy ****. Games, Personalization, System Restore, System Backup (Error code 1068), User Accounts, and Windows Update. They show up, and then they dissapear right away. Any help please? Virusscan'd with AVG, tested hardware, it's clean, I dont know whats wrong.
Why can't I use system restore to restore back to certain restore points? I was only successful twice with it. When my laptap was new and when I used it after re-formatting my hard drive. On all occassions after those two instances I can never restore back to any restore point. It always says that "unspecified error" line. If Microsoft doesn't know what happend, how could I. Why did they bother putting system restore if it doesn't work all the time anyway. It gives you a false sense of security.
View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter installing SP2, on 5/25, System Restore seems to have stopped creating automatic restore points every 24 hours. I checked the Task Manger and it is set for 24 hours. It shows a restore point being created on 5/26. System Restore shows the last Restore Point being created on 5/25 about 1 hour after downloading.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a recent problem installing Windows updates on Vista Ultimate as the update process stays on 'creating restore point' forever. I've let it run as long as 7 hours in this state, with no change. It looks like the system is unable to make a restore point sucessfully. I know it has worked in the past, as I'm fairly up-to-date on Windows updates. Reading some other threads, I've tried using Disk Clean-up to remove all by the most recent restore points, and then try to disable/re-enable system restore - this part without success. When I check the system properties for System Restore, the System Restore button is greyed out. I've attached a screenshot of the screen for reference. I've checked the group policies to verify the System Restore is not disabled there.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI went to accessories/system tools/system restore and clicked it. I then got a small dialogue window asking if I wanted to continue and I clicked continue. That little window disappeared but then nothing hasppened. I was expecting to see a list of possible restore points but nothing showed on my screen. I clicked system restore again and got a message that system restore was already running and would now exit.
View 9 Replies View RelatedThe mystery, at least to me, my PC was running almost 2 years. and it was not until about 3 weeks ago that System Restore began to save Restore Points the size of Approx 3 to 4GB daily. Prior to that the Restore Points were well under 1GB. it would be 3 to 6 days before I noticed the loss of 1GB. So why suddenly would the Restore File grew 1 one day from well under 1GB to between 3 to 4GB? That now is the issue I would like to know the answer to. and perhaps that file being saved with each Restore Point is not needed. I mean it wasn't needed for almost 2 years. so I can't think over night it became important but it sure is eating up HDD space.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI want to build a PC. I've browsed around the 'net looking for information on Complete PC Backup. The only thing that I've found on the 'net explains how to do a backup & restore. I've browsed around the Microsoft Vista discussion groups & found out that it is possible to do incremental (I wish that it would do differential instead of incremental backups.) as well as full backups.
Can I give the backup files names or does Windows? For example, before I install certain software can I give the backup a file name such as "before installijng XYZ software"? The way I understand it with incremental backups, the full backup has to be restored first & then the incremental backups are restored next starting with the oldest & proceeding to the latest. Since the Complete PC Backup does incremental backups, does the Restore wizard restore the incremental backups in order?
I have been placing my backup on an external USB 500GB drive. My computer with Windows Vista Ultimate melted down. I have been attempting to restore my documents from the USB Drive. I have restored some folders and now have 89,378 files mostly unrecognizable, such as: 7D6a3B81-0000DD52.nws. Isn't there a reasonable way to see the folders in the back up files so that one knows what to restore?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just recently got a new motherboard processor etc, and so i had to reinstall vista, well, i decided to go ahead and up to x64 so i backed up my hard drive under my current ultimate32bit and then formatted and installed ultimate64. So i thought i'd do a restore of my drive's backup, so i popped in my install disc, clicked repair comp, clicked restore a backup, chose the backup i wanted, confirmed, then a box popped that said basically, "The windows restore has failed. This backup can be restored on this computer. Please use the correct Windows Recovery Envirnment (x64) WinRE."
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just used Microsoft Backup for the first time. I have an external USB hard drive G: with 70GB free pace and 10GB already used. This was the first time I have run Backup START > CONTROL PANEL > BACKUP AND RESTORE I selected the option to backup everything. It ran for almost 80 minutes. I thought it was running because all the while, it was displaying the file that it was currently processing and then periodically, it would show the message writing to (G When it was finished, it wrote the following three lines
Last backup: 12/15/2009 9:49 PM
Next backup: 12/20/2009 11:00 PM
Where to save files: Local Disk (G So when I looked at G:, I could not find anything new. When I checked properties for G:, it was still 10GB used and 70GB free. Properties for (C were 30GB used 75GB free before and after backup. How can I tell if backup really happened? Did backup leave a log file?
I have a strange problem trying to account for the space usage on my disk. The disk capacity is 186 GB, and there is about 12.5 GB of available space. However, when I look at file sizes using ShowSize, TreeSize, or just manually looking at folder sizes in the explorer, I can only account for 99 GB of space. I have backup/restore turned off. Where's the rest of the disk space?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently downloaded a cleanup program that had good reviews from download.com. After using it, I saw that most of my programs in Accessories folder have disappeared!! For example, the System Tools folder is there but Cleanup and Defragmentar are not there, similarly, I have lost Calculator and many other programs. Besides, I somehow cannot use the backup restore that came with the cleanup program. I have uninstalled the cleanup program but how to get my accessories programs back? I am using Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit.
View 4 Replies View RelatedRunning Vista Home 64 going to upgrade to 7 professional. I understand that I will have to reinstall everything. My question is if I am using the vista backup and restore once I have completed the 7 install will I be able to restore my files with 7 even though it was originally backup up with vista or do I need to manually copy all my files onto an external drive instead of relying on the vista backup?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm operating Vista Ultimate x64 on an HP Tx2 Touchsmart. (The 3rd one.)I've had the Touchsmart for a month and the case broke - so before I swapped it out at Best Buy I went over to the Backup and Recovery area of Vista and made a full restore on to an external hard drive. The folder "WindowsImageBackup" now exists on my G: external drive. I go swap out the two machines, come home and try and get Backup Status and Configuration to recognize the G: drive backup - it finds the drive, not the backup. I get to the point where it searches for a backup to restore - but it won't see anything there. I can see it, but apparently Windows can't. Besides cuss at HP for making a machine I had to return twice because of hardware issues. It's a sweet little tablet (multi-touch) but I've got some lemons right off the rack. Don't let me down Vista community!

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a HP Pavillion M8150N with a quad core 2.4, (2)320 drives, upgraded to 4gbram (that was a waste) ... and ... its a great machine. I bought it 18 months ago and it fixed every problem I had with my old celeron 1.7 machine. I bought a project pavillion M9040N desktop box with no hard drives. I bought an HP Restore Disc and moved my (1) unused 320 SATA drive from my 8150 to the other machine ... and expected to just restore vista and have a backup machine.
It wasn't quite that easy. After (20) tries, I <powered on>, <hit F10>, entered the setup program and made the HD the first device, made the CD the 3rd device, made the HD the first boot device, and set it to display the parameters as it loaded. I dont know if I said that right.....
Could someone take their rime write us a tutorial on two topics? How to Rebuild a registry, and Backup and restore from DOS. For Vista. Im sure many could use this. All i found on google was that the reg is stored in System.dat And User.dat but it doesnt say what OS Version(s).
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am working with a PC that has account and password issues so the user is blocked from accessing his files. I have tried Orphcrack on the system but it's not showing any passwords. The user tells me the system has been acting odd for some time now and - of course - he does not have a backup and to make it worse his tax information is on the system so he had to file an extension to get time for me to do this recovery and restore. I need to pull his files from the system to wipe, perform a clean install, setup his account and restore his files.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have successfully used my Vista installation DVD to backup and restore Complete PC many times. But yesterday, it suddenly stopped booting and no longer prompts me to "Press any key to boot Vista from the installation CD/DVD". Other computers boot fine from this DVD, so it's not faulty. The only changes to the system configuration since the last successful boot from the DVD (literally the night before):
1. Automatic Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181)
2. Automatic Update for Windows Vista (KB947562)
3. Changed location of Documents, Videos, Music, Pictures to USB HDD, and then reverted back to defaults.
